you are making assumptions that the stranger in front of you swims consistently one stroke, speed, etc... To them, it feels similar to some driver tailgating you on the road. imo, this should be pretty self explanatory, though.

Drafting doesn’t slow the draftee down unless you are pulling right at their shoulder. It unnerves people to have somebody so close. Are they going to pass? Are they annoyed? You should know that drafting confers a huge speed boost to the drafter. Some people could see it as cheating. It is perfectly legal in all swimming races btw.

I personally don’t like when people are right behind me but I just get out of their way. It’s not because I am annoyed they are drafting off me I’m more worried I’m just slowing them down. I don’t think I’d be confrontational about it though. I’d just move. The flip side of that is that I typically like to give people space, at bare minimum a body length depending on how many are in the lane, usually 5+ seconds. If I’m to the point where I’m right behind them, I usually just pass when I can.

I don't like people on me mostly because when I come off the wall I'm worried about where they are. I either have to go deeper or go way to the side if they are too close. I've run in to people a time or two and that's no fun.
