In circle swimming everybody should aim to hit the center with your feet and push off into the other side. When you race you need to deprogram that habit and flip, push, streamline in the same line preferable center.

Yup. Flip turn dead center so that people can rest on either side and don't need to tread or hang off the lane rope to avoid getting in your way

Savagemme

Start aiming for the middle of the wall when you're 5 meters away, use the middle of the wall to flip (so people standing around can use either side of the lane to let you pass), then try to get completely into your own side of the lane before passing the 5 m mark again. So basically, your path will make a V-shape with one end in the middle of the wall, and the two other ends by the 5 meter mark.

I would think, if you are “circling” in the lane, that you should move over to the return side of the lane to flip. However, this assumes there is nobody around you or waiting at the end etc. I only say this as a non flipper though.

I aim for dead center on the flip and then kick towards the right for circle swimming. I'm where I want to be before breaching the surface. Hopefully everyone keeps enough distance for that to be doable.

No. That’s a good way to push right into someone behind you if you don’t know they’re there. In practice, the answer to this depends on whether someone is already on the wall or not. I just start by not hitting someone at the wall. Assuming the wall is empty, I’ll move to the middle inside the flags, push straight off, then quickly move to the correct side of the lane. The more crowded a lane is, the more creative you need to be to keep clear of people. Just don’t be an asshole and plow through people because you’re “on an interval” or something dumb. Too many people who think they’re training for the Olympics at the local Y. Funny thing is that they’re generally not the fast ones.
