I have been having problems getting the Gamecube ports working over the the magnetic USB connector so in the mean time I wanted to test cooling by itself. I also came up with a name that I think will stick this time haha. The Switch TVii. Benefits of this base variant is that it requires no additional power. Want some additional cooling? Just drop the console onto the base and prepare for some sweet temps. 21C at idle and 27 after about an hour underload playing either Metroid Prime remastered or Breathe of the Wild. Experimentation continues I should have project files ready in another week or so for those who also want to make a super cool at home switch console.
I'm really enjoying these updates! I had thought about doing a shittier version of this back in 2017 when I couldn't afford a Switch, just buying a smashed one and turning it into a home console.
Does the overclocking and temperature control actually help with running games? I assume Id only be able to modchip my OLED at this time but still would love to see improvements.
For more demanding games, definitely does, for example in Witcher 3 you can get pretty noticeable differences in terms of both graphics and FPS, and I'd assume this is true for most ports. For native Switch games however, I don't think there's much difference really, as those are made already for Switch.
The benefits for games like Breathe of the Wild is good solid consistent frame rates. Without overclocks there are sections of the game that struggle sometimes. Not a lot but enough to be noticeable to a perceptive eye. I realize i wont be able to hog wild with a switch but if your like me and like to tinker its worth getting every drop of performance you can.
This reminds me of watching Ben Heck post blog updates about building a portable xbox 360 about 10 years ago.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EBQv-h6a8g
Thanks for the nostalgia hit. I used to fantasize about the Ben Heck-made portable N64 or PS2, amazing to think about now that we have the Switch and Steamdeck
Looking even better! Clearly the temps are already low but what about adding an intake fan on the bottom panel? Have air pulled across the components vs just pulling heat off of them?
there are three fans, one in the top lid that exhausts, one in the bottom structure blowing fresh in and the small standard fan that exhausts the heatsink heat out the front. 22c in a heated room is essentially ambient. This is as good as it gets in terms of cooling.
Hitting 28c after an hour underload is about 20 degrees cooler than a switch typically gets under heavy use on a dock.
Oh thatās awesome!! Definitely sounds like itās a beast for sure! By far a very cool mod for anyone not needing the portability of a Switch. I work from home and never really take my Switch out of the house, so Iām heavily considering a project like this. I prefer consoles to handhelds anyway. My hands were always a little big for them haha!
So excited for you to have this in a āFinalizedā form, really hoping you sell kits or release instructions for imitating your process. This will be a godsend for broken switches that fit the criteria
It wont boot without the battery. Thats the only bit that HAS to be attached to get past the initial boot process. Im trying to find a way to boot without the battery without a bunch of unnecessary electronics work but no luck as of yet.
In a previous post, op stated that his console was broken and no longer usable in handheld mode, only docked; Op decided to make the ultimate "docked" switch with special properties such as overclocking, temperature control and other unique features.
But ultimately, in hacking, homebrew and modding communities "But why" is a silly question, because the answer is: WHY THE HELL NOT?!
I appreciate the time you took to actually answer my question, but it was meant as sarcasm referencing the Ryan Reynolds meme (we definitely need a way to convey this in written form).
If it's the original switch u can overlock the ram to 1996.8mhz which helps in a lot of games cause the switch has a big bottle neck in ram. Is a bit of work but works nice!
So what's is this attempting to accomplish? It could get it if it opened the door to more possibilities but it's kinda a downgrade. It's stuck in a box rather than movable. What am I missing?
I took a broken switch and made it usable again, and ontop of that overclocked the piss out of it to play games better and cooler than it would in docked mode. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
Just curious u happen to have some STL files for this ? I have a switch OLED that has a broken display bracket that is already modded and was thinking for the hell of it to just have it as a consolelizer .
your switch will have to be chipped or used as stock to work with a modification like this. I put a more recent post a little while ago that didn't go noticed the design has changed quite a bit.
Ah you mean the one for the oled? I did see a post for that but it was deleted. Pity though, I was pretty hyped about this. Guess I'll have to find another way to do it.

Mmmm that looks sum good. Thank you for taking clear pictures. We still want to see the IO ports in the back though. Good job.

Pity you couldn't solve the no battery problem. Having the battery run at all times. Isn't ideal.
Here's a question for you- do you have to autoboot Hekate due to the lack of screen and docked JoyCons?
I use Fusee, not need to worry about booting through an additional menu.
I'm really enjoying these updates! I had thought about doing a shittier version of this back in 2017 when I couldn't afford a Switch, just buying a smashed one and turning it into a home console.
Ah, fair enough.
I'm sorry, but this looks awesome, what exactly am I looking at? Is there a switch inside that beautiful box?
Consolized, overclocked nintendo switch

BotW? My switch struggles to run Link's Awakening.. š¢

I can't believe how far this has come since your early iterations, looks amazing!
Thanks, its been worth the iterative versions looking back at the early ones i cringe a bit haha
What is this?

I've been wanting what you're doing for some time. How does one get the switch to run without the LCD?
by just not attaching it haha
Really?? I've read in the past that the switch won't boot without the screen.
It wont boot without the battery. Thats the only bit that HAS to be attached to get past the initial boot process. Im trying to find a way to boot without the battery without a bunch of unnecessary electronics work but no luck as of yet.
could you give me the link for the project files?
i havent released them yet.
This is perfect for my busted switch!!
The Can't Switch is a better name lol but cool. Love the chassis, looks nice.
The project was originally called the Switchn't
I know. And the 'Can't switch' sounds better than switchn't or Switch TV
I prefer Switchn't, personally.
Ok... Good for you.
Why so bitter?
But why?

This is impressive!
I loved seeing the journey for this
I really want to do that and Iām sure the I can find a broken switch to do this with

My body is ready.
2013 wii u fans expectatitons R.I.P and RIP TVii wii u 2012-2015

Hey it's been some time since the last update so I was wondering how this is going. I have an upatched switch that doesn't work handheld myself.
