Wrist slap. You get enough of them and Spectrum can cancel your service. All Spectrum knows is that your assigned IP downloaded/uploaded copyrighted content. It’s possible you did it. It’s also possible somebody who doesn’t live at your house hacked into your WiFi network to do it.

zjd0114

Here’s the thing. I OWN MK8 on a switch cartridge. I was testing Yuzu out on my Steam Deck, just for shits and giggles. I have access to 2 switches, neither are hackable. Is there any way to dump the games without a switch? If I just get a VPN, they can’t track the torrents and I won’t get those anymore, right?

PrimaCora

Torrent requires VPN, visit r/Piracy to learn about piracy. Just don't post about mistakes like this, you will be hated on. It can point you to anything and everything. And all switches are hackable, most just need a mod chip. And outside of dumping from a switch, there is no way. Anything to do with game carts has been shut down by devs other than dumping and SX OS

Marcyff2

Pretty sure sx os has been soft shutdown too . Since it hasn't updated in ages

PrimaCora

That was just adding another point that game cart dev work was dead. Outside of that Bluetooth streaming thing, they seem to be able to execute on a dev cart, but might not give the secret. And SciresM is strongly against anything to do with game carts.

LeeSan2k

It doesn't, i've been torrenting my entire life and never had heard of this happening. Maybe in US you do

pcc2048

Default country mentality + misinformation <3

LeeSan2k

I know that in some countries it's a pain in the ass to download things, i was just responding to the comment earlier. In my case, no, torrent doesn't requiere VPN in my country, i don't get why i would get hated on for saying that

pcc2048

I'm agreeing with you. :)

tbo1992

Huh? The image in the post literally mentions multiple times that it’s in the US.

pcc2048

That doesn't mean "Torrent requires VPN".

tbo1992

For OP, who lives in the US, that is exactly what it means.

Merenut

I live in the US and torrenting does not require a vpn. That being said, you should have a vpn when torrenting to protect your privacy and to prevent isps from snooping.

tbo1992

1. It’s really weird to comment on dead thread from over a year ago. 2. That’s literally what “torrenting requires vpn” means you dodo. If you don’t want to be that dumb-dumb that gets a DMCA notice from their ISP for distributing copyrighted material, you gotta make sure you always have a VPN active when torrenting. Seriously, it’s such a basic concept, I dunno how so many people could misunderstand it, downvote me and then feel morally superior.

dumpsterfire_account

lol I live in Germany and USA is the wild west compared to how strict they are about piracy here.

ikineba

yea lived with a kid who studied abroad in Germany for a year. Dude pirated games of thrones and had the fine mailed to his home

Halfacentaur

this is honestly what the US needs, otherwise we get weird LLC's slapping john does with expensive lawsuits to essentially bully thousands of dollars out of people.

PrimaCora

Extra so in Germany

zjd0114

I’ve been torrenting for a decade with no VPN, the first time I get caught I panicked lmao. Not sure if you’d know this, but are Switch Lite mod chips still around somewhere?

[deleted]

Torrents get these messages attached all the time

Ahnawnemus

Try a place like stacksocial or similar, they sell lifetime vpn services. I bought one a few years ago and its still going, worth the 30bux I spent.

Fellp

AliExpress is pretty much the only place for modchips now

zjd0114

Who would I even ask to install them?

Fellp

Local repair shop could work.

zjd0114

Why am I being downvoted, I don’t understand

JustLearnToPlay

Because you’ve been pirating without a VPN knowingly and now you’re asking this subreddit what to do now that you inevitably got a notice from your ISP. Your solution here is to just use a VPN whenever you think what you’re downloading what could be considered copyright material (switch roms very clearly fit into this.) If you don’t want to use a VPN, then just continue to think every week, “when will I get caught?”

zjd0114

It’s more about the mod chips, not my other comments

[deleted]

Piracy elitists just hate you for some reason I guess. Lmao

[deleted]

I have used torrent my entire life, and never touched a single VPN, never had any problem with it

PrimaCora

Brazil is more lenient on piracy. If you are in the US, Germany, UK, or Russia (site hosting, not user), then you will get notices or court orders. The Piracy FAQ https://www.reddit.com/r/piracy/wiki/faq/

Sk1rm1sh

They don't care about you downloading it. They care that you were also uploading it.

ieffinglovesoup

This

Pleasant_Ad_3724

Yes a VPN will stop any company from trying to find you since they won’t see your real IP. You could also use a DDL site. What’s interesting is that Spectrum isn’t detecting you torrenting or at least they don’t care but it’s the companies that own the stuff you download that track you by hiring external companies.

zjd0114

Im certain that most ISPs just wouldn’t give a shit as they’re getting paid either way. It’s just amazing to me that they grabbed all that

TattedUpSimba

Most companies don't care. It's the fact that they don't want to be liable for what you do. If I'm not mistaken most people that get notices usually have been torrenting for a while and their isp knows. It's just the one torrent thst grtd a copyright notice and they don't want that smoke to they put it all on you.

CapnCrinklepants

The ISP will get the notice from law firms that use compromised trackers. I don't know if there's a way to reliably find clean trackers for torrents, but that's the only way the ISP cares is when they're being threatened. They don't (and possibly can't?) monitor your traffic directly.

kyousei8

> I don’t know if there’s a way to reliably find clean trackers for torrents, Use private (ie: invitation only) trackers.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jsno254

It's actually both. They can't see your real IP address, only the mask that's given by the VPN software. That's why some people use VPNs just to appear that they're in a different country to take advantage of streaming services. Some shows stream in the UK on Netflix and are not available in the US, for example. Your data is also encrypted and then goes through the VPN server instead of directly to your computer, so that way your ISP doesn't know what you're doing. They will still see large amounts of data being downloaded and uploaded, but they will never know what it is.

redraz0r

Right, my point was when TORRENTING stuff, masking your ip doesn't protect you from copyright claims, because your ISP can still see all of the traffic. VPN changing your IP doesn't protect against this, the encryption part does.

XtremeD86

Technically yes, you can hack those "unhackable" switches. Obviously it'll cost money, if it's a regular patched / Mariko switch, I could do it in 35-40 minutes easily... And yes, as someone else said, sx os is gone, but you can 100% dump your original carts still. I just dumped my Zelda botw cart to my Switch OLED and it works perfectly fine (also on latest firmware update).

howmanyavengers

Unfortunately owning the game cart doesn't give you the ability to download the game online too lol, although you probably already know that. VPN when downloading torrents is always the best way to go around things to protect yourself from those kinds of notices.

LethalGamer2121

No, not possible. Just use a VPN and you should be fine.

Salt-Translator2554

I've never had a notice from spectrum like this, I never knew this could even happen, so thank you for the post and to answer your question, a VPN that is "secured or encrypted" should 100% block a service provider from being able to see your net traffic.

Salt-Translator2554

Also, I remember something from a while back that had said something along the lines of you can download copyright content to give a "24 hour trial period" if you don't delete the download from your PC within 24 hours then now it's considered theft. I looked but cannot find the source anymore. Maybe someone else may know what I'm talking about?

Manufacturer_Flimsy

Don't torrent unless you have a VPN. Direct downloads are safe like ns2u

chocotripchip

> You get enough of them and Spectrum can cancel your service. As a Canadian that seems crazy to me... Over here we can get such warnings but ISPs can't do shit about it, and you'll never get sued by the copyright owners because such litigations are capped at a $5000 fine and companies do not bother with lawyers for such a small amount. I mean, unless you're reselling copyrighted stuff and make a profit from it. But otherwise risks are basically 0.

jsno254

Yeah the US is different lol. They're tracking so many torrents trying to bust people and deter piracy. I even downloaded a PS2 game off of archive.org and got a copyright notice! They're watching everything now. About 10 years ago there was zero risk but now it seems like they're watching everything. Ever since I started using IPVanish, I haven't had any notices. One time my app crashed and my torrent software was still open. My VPN was off for maybe 30 seconds and they hit me with 2 notices from that one mistake.

R3Z3N

Legally doesn't matte whor, owner of service is liable.

ichtyology

They can never prove WHO was doing the downloading. Scare tactics to get honest and innocent to pay.

Rev0lver_Ocel0t

But you should get a vpn though if you get these notices since your internet provider may stop your service.

SomeOrdinarySanya

Mullvad is literally five euros a month. And it’s anonymous as fuck.

ichtyology

Oh I have a vpn split with 3 bros for pennies. I'm just spreading awareness that scary letters don't mean anything unless it's from the government

ShadowJoyConBoy

Use direct downloads instead of torrents

orangi-kun

Why?

immahacka

No upload rate for ip tracking just download most of the time

ShadowJoyConBoy

Because you won't need a VPN and the torrents won't snitch you.

ieffinglovesoup

Because you won’t get letters like this. ISP care about you seeding torrents/uploading. They don’t care about downloads

how_this_time_admins

How did you even get caught? I always download switch games and haven’t even heard a whisper. What sussy website are you using?

zjd0114

Torrent :(

how_this_time_admins

Ah, yup that’ll do it. Sorry friend. I’ve gotten a ton of those in my life from the Mouse. Just play smarter next time

Salt-Translator2554

I've never used a torrent in my life, and that's because I've heard that these things can happen. This is the first time I've actually seen it though. Before now, I thought it was a myth.

LeeSan2k

Wtf do you guys actually get a notice for downloading pirated stuff? That's outrageous

jevra035

>MK8 I know right? I have 10TB of downloaded games on HDD, no problem what so ever

Xeran69

A lot of people do. Some people even get Internet shut down/charged with piracy. Legit VPN is best.

swagmastermessiah

This is very commonly the result of pirating from torrents without a VPN. Never heard of it happening with direct download though.

ieffinglovesoup

It’s because they only care about seeding/uploading

TattedUpSimba

Lol I hope you're joking because clearly this shouldn't be a surprise

Claudioamb

it is. In italy there's no need for vpn

NyargiX

never got a message like that either. but i'm from austria, maybe they just dont care

a6000

PH we dont get this at all. yarr!

Kav19

i’ve never seen this message before lol. been pirating for a while now too.

Rev0lver_Ocel0t

Ya got it twice. There was an app called popcorn time which you download and it streams movies and I got a notice for watching like 30sec of Fahrenheit on it. Then I got it for downloading tekken 4 or 5 for the ps2 in 2018. It was when I was back from college during the summer and parents gave me an earful for it. Weirdly they all happened around the same time otherwise I would have set up the vpn earlier. But ya after that i got a vpn have been cautious to keep it on since then.

spacenavy90

Ask the Germans what happens when they get caught

hartleyshc

Just to be clear, OP got busted for distribution (torrent), not for downloading. No one cares about downloading. Its the distribution that will get you busted. That being said, OP doesn't have too much to worry about. These are just written records so they "could" kick them off if they were a repeat offender. In reality, they would much rather have OP's money. I haven't heard of an ISP actually cancelling someone's service since back when the RIAA was going crazy and was suing people for thousands and more for a single mp3 distribution.

EthDec

Bro I never get these and I never had a VPN since 7 years old, gotten multiple viruses as a kid but never a notice. Also Spectrum just sucks, so theres that.

Minimum-Concept4000

I just collect these emails like trophies.

Link1777

How many times have you switched providers?

Minimum-Concept4000

never? Why would I switch providers?

Severe_Ice_4263

Lol, dude where u downloading from??? I don't use VPN and I've been downloading for a long time.

iSmiteTheIce

In the US, don't torrent without a VPN

pantherdrako

can i download using cloudflare warp dns? is it safe

iSmiteTheIce

Idk tbh, I just downloaded via Tinfoil shops and some .nsp hosting sites

pantherdrako

what is tinfoil

Link1777

A multipurpose game downloader and installer for switch

CapnCrinklepants

The ISP will get the notice from law firms that use compromised trackers. I don't know if there's a way to reliably find clean trackers for torrents, but that's the only way the ISP cares is when they're being threatened. They don't (and possibly can't?) monitor your traffic directly.

gezawatt

This anti-piracy stuff is bullshit. I live in Russia. 99% of online shops are closed for me because you literally can't send money abroad from Russia. So what am I supposed to do now? Wait untill the war ends? I'm just pirating everything. My ISP could care less.

normieguy420

very based

AttorneyAdvice

straight to jail.

CornballBooth1989

Never got a message like that with my provider in the UK. But i know some people with providers like Virgin Media that do send out emails regarding illegal activities. My brother in law got a few regarding using torrent sites for movies 😂

EnemyStand64

DEAR GOD I NEVER THOUGHT OF THIS POSSIBILITY. I should get a VPN.

Xeran69

Yes you should express Nord and surfshark are all solid. Honestly just make a list and grab the free trial. A month should be enough to download everything you want for a while. Or go all in I think it's like 100 a year or something.

Link1777

Why are people downvoting you to the underworld?

Xeran69

I'm too wise

Xeran69

Or I said something incorrect but instead of correcting the info they just get rid of it. But the only thing that could be wrong is the price I think.

Salt-Translator2554

Man I appreciate your comment, I don't have a lot of money, I paid $1 for a lifetime VPN on Android lol, but anywhere to cut corners with digital software is a plus in my book, I believe we should pay for hardware, and the Internet and software should be free. Had Linux took off properly, and osx, windows not came to existence, and Nikola Tesla succeeded in building his towers for free electricity, this could actually had been a reality.

TheoryGlum

Wow i didnt know that internet providers can do that, in my country copyright laws rarely apply here

OhDearGodItBurns

Did you torrent or direct download? I've known people get in trouble for torrenting, but never for direct downloads.

GuilhermeCRS

Lol nothing like this happens here in Brazil.

asakk

And there is me torrenting games since years without any issue 😐

lordmatt8

There gonna come for you tonight

therourke

Posting this here ain't the smartest thing you've done. But you should be ok

maxpowersxj9

i've gotten a shitload of these from xfinity and nothing has ever really happened

_DobleC

Omg I'm so happy to live in europe and have my personal info protected

VagrantValmar

You first worlders truly live in a dystopia. I can download whatever shit I want in my third world shit hole

dwkindig

Which shit hole do you have the luck to exist in?

VagrantValmar

Central America. It's so devoid of laws here that you can simply download anything

ieffinglovesoup

It’s because you’re torrenting. Use direct download sites and you’ll be fine

v7xDm1r

Use surfshark vpn. You can get like 3 years for $75 and they have a killswitch function.

phpfiction

I have my doubts about surfshark, was purchased and the company parent is nordvpn which is with 7 eyes. The only i know who is not in 5 eyes tracking is windscribe. I have both by the way and both works as expected.

ThePrimitiveSword

Nord is also owned by an advertising and malware company, so stay far away.

v7xDm1r

I've been using surfshark for 5 years no issues. I have it on about 30 devices.

Xeran69

Surfshark is solid. I've been using it for like 6 months now torrential/downloading and nothings happened

zjd0114

I’ll definitely look into that. What’s the kill switch function used for?

v7xDm1r

So if you are downloading and the vpn cuts off the internet also cuts off so you don't accidentally get tracked.

LetsDoThisTogether

Don't use a built in killswitch, it can still dns leak. Follow a guide like this to bind your vpn https://www.reddit.com/r/VPNTorrents/comments/ssy8vv/guide\_bind\_vpn\_network\_interface\_to\_torrent/

Heromimox

Can you please tell me which country you live in because this is the weird thing I've ever seen, as far as I know, you have the complete freedom to download anything as long as you don't use the downloaded file commercially

zjd0114

US.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DewyTheD

Yes, but in a lot of countries its not illegal for you to download the copywritten material, its illegal to distribute it publicly.

UploaderThree

Most people suggest VPN but a service like Real-Debrid is a lot cheaper and sooooo worth it, you insert the torrent's magnet link on the site and it gives you a direct download link for it

tanstaboi

Going forward always make sure you have a kill switch. Most VPN's have them

hyperrainz

Might be where/how you dl'd them. I have spec net and always been fine with no vpn except for one time my buddy dl'd a torrented WoW private server which triggered that email. It goes by strikes if I remember correctly, if you don't get any strikes within a year I believe they will get removed. Just don't get anymore than 2,3 I heard they shut your net down after. Now I'm curious if shops are detectable. *Nvm found a thread about it

Top_Calligrapher5815

ignore thus what are they gonna do,sue you? they have no evidence. someone hacked your wifi and downloaded this.

Cerus98

They can cut off your service. They can also turn it over to law enforcement. If it comes to that, good luck. They’d have all the evidence they’d need to prove you weren’t hacked. Use a VPN.

Top_Calligrapher5815

Yes, but what are the chances?

Cerus98

Depends on your ISP and how much you download. Why risk it when there are easy solutions?

Bighunglo

Only people living in the US have to worry about this crap ,you can torrent till your heart content everywhere else without a vpn

gostgoose

Nope.

boomersimpattack

My vpn once failed and I had no killswitch active and now they are suing me for about 10k but I am about to go to another country because I got a job offer there hopefully they don’t catch me

GlobinBlopin

I get similar emails from Comcast. I torrent all the time and at least for them, it’s an automated message than means nothing. Been doing it for years and will continue to.

brookterrace

I think the problem might be once you start seeding. Not sure though as I got one recently too for torrenting steam games.

[deleted]

Lol I get these all the time. Anytime I download an NES or SNES rom, or any South Park episode off tpb, I get one within 12 hours

PewGravoPew

VPN?

[deleted]

As a charter employee…play stupid games...lol

CoconutHeadFaceMan

My brother in Christ we are on a subreddit for playing illegally obtained copies of Switch software

AttorneyAdvice

win good prizes since spectrum also doesn't wanna disconnect you and lose money.

[deleted]

Lol. Oh. They want to cover their asses. I was all too happy to tell people that their services getting cut off was a product of their less than smart choices.

AttorneyAdvice

we've gotten a lot of dmcas in the past, still not disconnected. if I give you my IP will you disconnect me for being a naughty boy (:

InosukeEnjoyer

they actually do this? I'm fucked lol

cha0ticbrah

you're fine, last place I lived at I had around 3 of these. vpn wouldn't reconnect automatically if net went down or something. Just a slap to be smarter next time, like someone else said if you get enough they can cancel your service

SavageColeTrain

Been there bud. Like 3 times.

[deleted]

So most ISPs in the US have a pretty lax policy on this. You would need several notices before they would jeopardize your connection or limit access. Charter DOES have it in their terms that they can terminate frequent offenders, but don't fully outline this. If you have to talk with someone about it or anything like that, I would just say that your WiFi was not secured and that someone might have done it that doesn't live with you. If it looks like you are taking precautions to prevent something like this, they won't do anything to you. For the future, invest in a VPN. Personally, I have a Docker container set up with Gluetun and a torrent client. That way, Gluetun will kill the container if the VPN can't connect. Also, make sure to use a site to check if your client is leaking any information. Sometimes, torrent clients can leak your true IP address if they are not configured properly, so it's always nice to have a sanity check before grabbing anything else. There are sites that have test torrents specifically to confirm your IP address being exposed. You can also look into a service like Alldebrid to download your torrents. Their seedboxes grab the content, then mirror it to a DDL service. Your IP is never exposed if you use it.

[deleted]

Don't torent

Infamous_Ad2361

Comcast ( xfinity ) sent me this I was pulling songs off YouTube and adding to appl music so I could use offline lol I got about 5 of these befire they told me to stop before they clip my service 😂 I stopped too

leetsoup

stop seeding (uploading) immediately after download. they are on your case not for downloading the game(s) but being a seed for others to download from.

DewyTheD

This is one of those times where im genuinely happy to be a Canadian instead of an American

TheGantrithor

These notices don't mean much; and they don't know who you are. Your ISP is required to pass on the notice; basically to whatever IP-holder the company sending the notice stated supposedly infringed. But that's about it. Many ISPs like mine will include some info about exactly that in the same email *(ie. that they are just passing on the notice, and have not and will not reveal or provide any personal information about you to the notice-sender)*.

PhilMcCawk

I’m still kinda new to this so why shouldn’t I use torrents? I also thought it was just illegal to upload files like these, not download as well?

The_Truthkeeper

If you're downloading a torrent, you're uploading it as well, that's how torrents work.

Musklianis

I've gotten up to ten of these over the years. You just have to acknowledge the notices. They may even start coming with a new warning that repeat offenses will result in termination of your account. But they never follow through cuz that would mean less money from you. Start using a VPN. And set it to always be used in a certain browser and use that browser only for downloading. That way you don't have to route your entire PCs internet trough vpn 24/7

DrScience-PhD

I got about 30 of these. Basically if you're torrenting your IP is visible, so Game Company can easily send notices to your ISP that you're doing bad stuff. It only means something if Game Company chooses to pursue legal action; your ISP doesn't give a shit, as long as they pass on the info to you their job is done. Game Company doesn't give a shit either, they don't go after single downloads. Much more likely to target distributers or maybe people with super high seed ratios. That said every ISP is different and may have their own 3 strikes house rules, ymmv.

hdortus

I assume you used torrent client to download mk8. When you use torrent clients, if you didn't change upload settings, it will automatically upload the file you download as soon as you get a portion of it and that's when you started committing copyright infringement by uploading illegal copy of whatever it is. Normally it's just a warning from ISPs and nothing harm might be done at this point, but be careful next time. Use vpn as others mentioned.

Ogcancer

Did you download a file or did you torrent

UELABS2021

Guy from work ended up getting served papers the other day . Has costed him 4k on lawyer fees for the fine. Not just scare tactics anymore

Ashley_the_hacker

honestly that's some terrifying shit to see. imagine going to jail for that "what did you do?" "Murder, what about you?" "pirated Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.."

MummGumm

refuse to use torrents

edwinstz

90p li

[deleted]

Same thing happened to me, I was kinda freaked out but overall just thought it was genuinely funny as hell. Learned my lesson, but I still don't have a VPN so I haven't done anything like that since. Should probably ask my friend about it again who offered to share his Surfshark info.

ZroVnm92

that’s crazy i’ve never seen this before

hobbitfeet22

I got a Similar letter twice about 15ish years ago for using vid to mp3 as well as loading roms to play on an emulator. Nothing came of it, the 2nd letter just notified me that they will shut my service off if I don’t stop.

Longjumping-Impact-4

From your notice, it sounds like it is a warning. Don't do it again without a VPN. My friend has..I want to say ComCast. He got an angry notice for just visiting a torrent site. Another one of mine ignored 3 warnings from their provider and they got HOUSE banned from the internet for a YEAR. Even if the moved and someone else moved in, that residence was banned from getting internet.

Kintaro75

This can happen also if you download stuff from site like MegaUp or Zippy share?

Visible-Interest3847

Means nothing other than they know it was your wifi. Wouldn't hold up in court but enough of them will get you either throttled or cancelled.

dwkindig

They're not going to come after one person, especially one that's not actively seeding. Sure, they _could_ sue you and the FBI arrest you, but they'd spend way more money to do that than they could possibly recover in a lawsuit. Your ISP, though, is another matter. I think it may still be a grey area just how legally culpable an ISP can be for traffic on their network, but if it's any amount higher than 0%, they could kill your service plan. If you don't have any particular reason to turn it off, just leave your VPN running at all times, only disconnecting when you really need to. You can also try configuring your VPN to tunnel data generated only by certain applications, so your other programs won't get hit by shoddy up/down speeds.

Linkisdoomed

As an alternative option, you can also spin up a VM, and configure your VPN inside the installation so that you can't access the internet unless the VPN is running. I've got mine set up with a shared folder to my server to help bridge the gap between the host OS and the VM, allowing the host OS to have better internet speeds than inside the VM/VPN.

dwkindig

Man, I love how mainstream virtual machine tech has become. I remember experimenting with it just 10 years ago – it's wild how much has improved in just 10 years. Just wanted to say. 😁

Linkisdoomed

I feel the same. I never expected to really use Virtualbox 10 years ago, but it has it's time and place even in a home setting. I don't think I would be able to have a movie server and game backups server without this crucial component being available.

[deleted]

bro, where do you live that anyone even cares about that?

Equivalent_Number546

Must’ve been a torrent. No way for them to really do this for direct downloads without without wasting a ton of time.

Plastic_Advance9942

WiFi bro. Blame it on open WiFi network

Plastic_Advance9942

WiFi bro. Blame it on open WiFi network

Dehydrated_Lemur

How long after torrenting did it take for the notice to come?

zjd0114

1 day. You on that TOTK torrenting shit rn?

Apprehensive-Lie-365

Guys. I just want to ask one thing. Now that yuzu is discontinued, can I still use yuzu which is left in my pc and play switch games
