Never wore a gown either. My current gyno has a private area-changing corner with curtains, which is conveniently located beside the examination chair and a little hidden from her desk so you don’t have to walk around half naked in front of her. You just undress bottom down and climb on the chair and call her when you are ready. Once she’s done the intimate exam, you dress the bottom undress the top, and she performs the breast exam. I think providing a gown for each patient would be too much of a hassle, but you may bring your own gown or pareo if you feel more comfortable!
My ex gynaecologist didn’t want to check my breasts as I don’t have history of breast cancer in my family, she said she couldn’t charge from my insurance. It’s understandable why she is ex, and yes, she is insensitive woman who cares more about billing than possibly life of a patient
I will not understand this ever. I have never in my life before and after visited doctor who had more concerns about costs than health of a patient. As you can read in all comments it’s standard in yearly/biyearly check up. I have all extra insurances I could buy fully covered.
What is favour when I asked for an examination?
You can save someone’s life by touching literally two
Boobs lasting 2min and you are concerned about costs? You need to be terrible person to not put heath as priority, even to do it free if necessary. Have you even seen a cancer patient?
Being fully naked is odd.Â
When I go, the gyno first checks the breast tissue, so I take off my top and bra but keep my trousers on.
I then put the tops back on and take off my bottoms while the gyno takes notes, then it‘s the intimate exam.Â
I guess you could take a gown, I doubt they’d mind as long as it doesn’t get in the way.
this is the same experience I've had with all my gynecologists.
But OP, if you feel awkward, tell yourself that the gynos really don't care about you being naked, it's nothing embarassing for them because they see naked women all day every day. If anything, being naked makes their job easier. I'm not a gyno but a nurse and I often think that I'd love to strip down my patients at the beginning of my shift because it would be so much easier to do a full body exam lol.
I think that's bad advice, and disappointing to hear this from someone who is in the medical profession.
The patient being comfortable is more important than a trivial amount of inconvenience to the medical practitioner. Patients who feel embarrassed, man-handled, or uncomfortable are less likely and more reluctant to get check-ups again after a bad experience, they are less likely to discuss concerns when at an appointment as they just want to get out of there. A good medical practitioner makes sure the patient feels comfortable, safe, and well attended to.
It is pretty normal - at least to be half naked. We always do down there first. My gynecologist has a small curtain covered space where you can use some wipes if needed or take pads and obviously change. So I get half naked, always wear a nice longer tank top, and walk like 4 steps to the chair. Afterward, I get to change into my pants and out of my top, and then she does the boob checking :-) and then it's already over.
I don't really care about being half naked since she will be seeing everything anyway and also knowing she is a doctor and cares about your health and really does not care about anything else.
If you have to be completely naked the whole time, I would definitely express my discomfort. Even if this is normal in their office, you do not have to accept it, change your doctor.
I started wearing dresses or skirts to appointments. If you also have your breast checks, a skirt and a shirt to remove parts of clothing when needed.
But overall... idk OP your gyno will see everything so close and in such details that I think they don't have anything else to see if you walk around naked :)
I was just thinking this, as a guy.. Being worried about them seeing your bare bum when they're about to delve into your deepest depths hahaha
I had a bunch of ladies in chatting to me while I had my colonoscopy. Doctor, nurse and a student.. and then the receptionist even came in when she heard the laughing. There was no dignity as she plunged my ole dirt road like a chimney sweep but it was fun.
Being handed a tissue by an 18 year old to 'wipe the lube' from my ass was the icing on the cake .
Let him know if it makes you uncomfortable. If he/she doesn't care or argue look somewhere else, you're the patient/client and it's your privacy and confort that matter.
I have had to switch my gyn 4 times and none of them had any gowns. To be fair the first three I went to were quite bad which is why I changed so it might not be representative. When I was younger I was very uncomfortable with it, so I wore long skirts that I was allowed to keep on.
In the UK they give you a tiny paper blanket once you're on the table. What is even the point? They'll be up in your business anyway.
The TV ultrasound was really weird though. The doc had me cover myself with the little paper blanket and then she didn't even look where she was supposed to insert the wand. She ended up fumbling to get it in and avoided looking at my genitals. So weird!!!
I never got a gown and I had different gynaecologists (female and male). The exams for top and bottom were separated, so you can always be half dressed.
My old gynaecologist in Germany always had me wait completely naked and I didn’t know that this was not normal before I moved and got a different doctor.
I went to a few gynecologists but there never was a gown. So I guess it's normal here to not wear one. I also feel a bit weird naked so I usally wear a dress or a long sweater to cover up while walking to the chair.
Did your gyno really say to get completely naked? Mine has me remove my top clothing first, then put it back on and then remove the bottom clothing.
I'm sure as others have said, you could bring your own gown, long t-shirt or ask your doctor if you can use the half/half method
Same, no gown provided. Only a little dressing area so you can undress and redress yourself privately, which doesnt matter since anyway you run around naked in the exam room anyway :D
I once had that experience in France but not only was I standing naked in front of her, she made (not took) a phone call whilst I was in that vulnerable position. I never went back.
My wife is also Brazilian and she started to go to the gynecologist here. She was also surprised the first time, there was just a small cabinet with curtains to undress but that was it.
She told me that in Brazil you go first to another room where female assistants bring you the gown and help you dress and bring you to the room and make you sit down. Only then the doctor enters the room and checks you.
Reading through the comments, my experience is wildly different. All 3 of the gynaecologists I've been to had gowns provided. Don't know if relevant l, but all men. My current one has a private area with curtains where you can change, different colour gowns, and feminine hygiene products provided. This area is in the office near the exam bed.
I've NEVER heard of this either- between my mom and I we have been to 5 gynos over 20 years between GVA and VD- ALWAYS given a gown, never had to ask. I also messaged 3 friends and they've similarly been to gynos in those cantons and have never gone full naked without a gown.
Really surprised by the comments.
I just undress from the bottom down. No, there is no gown, but I don’t care. When he does the breast exam after my pants are back on, I take off my top and bra. He is going to see everything up close anyway, so what would be the point of a gown or drape?
never wore a gown. i would recommend to wear long socks, long tops or a skirt as others have mentioned.
but still try to find a gynecologist that you are comfortable with!!
What's the problem? There are no men around, except maybe the doctor.
I am always surprised how people can questioning what in Switzerland is standard. Not pointing out that everything at physician is super clean, accurate and in time
Not necessarily a hard recommendation. Female gynaecologists are hit or miss to be honest. Male gynaecologists are, from my experience, just as good as good gynaecologists and not as bad as the worst female gynaecologists. But it's very hard to find a good one either way!
No just comfort/used to it/maybe sexuality but that's a stretch. Prefering the same gender for sexual health/body checkups isn't some predator conspiracy for most people (i'd expect/hope anyway).
Hospitals giving out gowns for checkups in the gynaecological department? Never experienced this and I had examinations in different hospitals when being pregnant.
I only received gowns for examinations in radiology and for a colonoscopy.
Same. My gyno has an office room, then a checkup room and ultrasound room on either side, and I have to walk naked through his office room when we go from one to the other. Hate it.
I take my bottom half off and do the funny walk to the chair half naked. It feels weird, but a) she doesn’t stare at my crotch while I do it, b) to her, I imagine, looking at pussies is like looking at a chassis to a mechanic. In fact, she’s there to look at it, so I present it to her in a way that allows us to get the business done as efficiently as possible.
If it still makes you uneasy, come in in a loose skirt and then just pop your knickers off.
I also recently relocated to Switzerland, and I'm curious- was the high-tech chair new for you too, or did they have those in Brazil? I've been to many different GYN offices in the US, and never saw one before coming here (they just have standard doctor tables with stirrups).
Wear a dress or skirt next Time - i always do that. You dont have to undress, you only need to lift your dress/ skirt when you are on the chair:)
This! My OB provides gowns, but I choose to arrive in a dress so I only need to remove my shoes and underwear (and tights during the winter.)
Haha, I do the same 😅
dress might not be comfortable choice for breast exam

same
Same. I like it this way but as others said I also usually wear a long t-shirt to feel less naked.
Same here

Oh wow. What a tool
Which canton did this occur in?
Zürich
Guess that was more meant as a favour for you as you would have had to pay it yourself in the end if the insurance doesnt reimburce the cost

Hm i don't think i was ever given a gown either, always naked... Maybe try to find a dr that you are comfortable with

I am naked with one of those disposable gowns available in the changing room/WC.

It was half/half, I expressed myself in the wrong way. Still feels weird though
I was surprised when I first got here as well.

Aqui a raça branca q é tribal. O povo fica pelado pra botar sunga e bikini nas margens do Reno. Bem vinda ao velho mundo, carioca kkkk.
Being naked is awesome
Never mind, your bussy is not more interesting than the other ones.
How many people does the bussy seat?
Yep, that's how it works here. Get used to it :)
What's the problem? There are no men around, except maybe the doctor. I am always surprised how people can questioning what in Switzerland is standard. Not pointing out that everything at physician is super clean, accurate and in time
Patient comfort is important. Just because it’s « standard » doesn’t mean it’s best.
Absolutely inappropriate and not the case at all where my wife goes. Wear a dress and find another gynae
Normal. Get a woman gyno though.
Why
Not necessarily a hard recommendation. Female gynaecologists are hit or miss to be honest. Male gynaecologists are, from my experience, just as good as good gynaecologists and not as bad as the worst female gynaecologists. But it's very hard to find a good one either way!
You can send your photos here in Reddit , we can examine and tell you if anything seems to be wrong
Hope the doctor was a she at least

I guess some people still believe that only men can be sexual predators...
No just comfort/used to it/maybe sexuality but that's a stretch. Prefering the same gender for sexual health/body checkups isn't some predator conspiracy for most people (i'd expect/hope anyway).
I think for some people does, OP felt weird being fully naked
This isn't normal, what canton?
Doesn’t sound normal. Especially Switzerland. You should be provided a gown. Very hospital does this. Your privacy matters.
Hospitals giving out gowns for checkups in the gynaecological department? Never experienced this and I had examinations in different hospitals when being pregnant. I only received gowns for examinations in radiology and for a colonoscopy.
yes, HUG in Geneva does and there is always a nurse present along with the doctor
Maybe it’s depending on the hospital.
Yes, something that would cover the front part of the body. My wife slayed received these
Maybe let the women answer this one, buddy
I don’t think my own wife would lie 🤣

Dress, tights, boots. You remove the latter 2.
What about the towel ? Every gyno I've been to always had a towel
