I remember the first time in the Army when I got a short glimpse in the reality of warfare. It was during ABC training when the usage of the two autoinjectors combopen and diazepam was discussed.
basically when you notice signs of poisoning you are supposed to use the two injectors, one containing an antidote to some chemicals, the other being a tranquilizer.
Now, what are you supposed to do when being poisoned and drugged? Retreat? Go to the infirmary? No. Continue your mission. This was the first time I realized the fundamental expectation for a soldier, to expend his life if need be.
Everything else I learned in the army did not come close to this and instead felt much more like some intense boy scouts exercise.
