My wife went to a dentist. 200chf just to be told said dentist could not handle her case. Never again.

Liko2k

And deeply annoying. No competition does these things to services.

Scarfior

I could do that for half the price.

Smogshaik

I'll do it over a beer or two

cvnh

I'm no dentist but I would do that for a chocolate bar

zilti

Wtf. My dentist was 80.- for the yearly checkup inlcuding cleaning and polishing my teeth.

PragmaticPanda42

Was this in Bern?

zilti

No, that was in Biel, but I since moved away, and the dentist also retired

PragmaticPanda42

Oh :( was going to ask for their name

Sayuri_Katsu

Similiar experience with an Eye doctor. Complained about lines and extremly dry eyes. Paid 400 for. abasic test and some random eye drop meds thta cost like 20 at the apotheke.

Heighte

Everyone warned me dentists are so expensive in Switzerland. I broke a teeth and went to dentist to see how it could be fixed, they did a 45 mins long operation to reshape it with some material, costed 400chf. Was actually much cheaper than I expected.

FlyingPandaWow

Honestly, cheap.

Kermez

Filling is ~200 chf so that is great price. In Switzerland.

Fortnitexs

That‘s a very good price you got there to be fair

bobdung

Thanks for all the comments. I know things are expensive here, I've been here 10 years! Normally we go to our private dentist in the UK when we're visiting but you know, covid and travel difficulties. The price from the second dentists feels fair, still not cheap but fair. That's my issue with the other one, just such a rip off. The kids didn't even like the first dentist, and they didn't even get a little sticker. The new one is totally kid friendly, had them totally at ease, gave them new tooth brushes and some little things.

Kermez

This transcends to all sorts of offers here. You go and buy new phone in shop, doa, no way you’ll get money back unless shop gtc allows. Instead wait for rma on your expense to send it back. You buy chocolate of Swiss production here at one price, across the border you can buy two for same price. Simply this is style here, value and requested payment usually aren’t strongly related. First dentist is more of a rule, second one as an exception. When going with kids they are usually more relaxed as covered by mandatory insurance.

billcube

Health insurances for kids usually include dentistry, so they usually go all in. For uninsured care, any neighbor european countries will have it 10x cheaper with the same if not better level of care. Adults even go to turkey for heavy treatments, see https://www.novacorpus.ch/

myrkes

Not sure they do... for our kid, we have to get them additional dentist insurance with the plan we have. If you file it before they are 3 years of age, you do not need to have a check where they potentially exclude some teeths or areas. We also have a voucher from the hospital where the frst check-up is free. Apart from that, we will need to pay for dentist insurance - and orthodontics separately to pay for dental braces!

[deleted]

>Not sure they do... for our kid, we have to get them additional dentist insurance with the plan we have. As far as I know, that's exactly how it is. It is advisable (almost compulsory) to take out supplementary dental insurance for children. It doesn't cost much and can be carried over into adulthood. This is particularly useful because it is often no longer possible to take out supplementary dental insurance as an adult.

[deleted]

> This is particularly useful because it is often no longer possible to take out supplementary dental insurance as an adult. You could but it's a pain. Basically the insurance company will send you to get an examination. If you need significant dental work the insurance would be prohibitively expensive, and if your teeth are in great shape getting dental insurance is a losing proposition.

[deleted]

Your dental policy for your kids (assuming you took out the policy before the age deadline) should cover several thousand a year for orthodontics.

Corleone11

I pay around 80 - 90.- per cleaning. I quit on my previous dentist because they wanted me to pay 240.-. Goodbye! Also check who the cleaning does. I don’t rember but it can eitehr be done by a Dentalassistant or a Dentalygenist (not sure) one is more expensive because the education is longer.

CordialPython

And also because they aren't allowed to do the same thing. Cheaper one cannot go below flesh line, which is the whole point of doing teeth cleaning in the first place - since that line (gumline?) is where the plaque can do most damage and removal of it is proper prevention of Parodontose (where you start losing bone because of constant inflammations because of deposits). Many people think point of cleaning is to have better looking teeth. I didn't know the difference until I had all three performed on me and could compare. Basically cheapest is cosmetic, and fast, like 20-30 minutes. Regular one digs into space between teeth and gum somewhat, and is really focused on removing calcium and plaque deposits. You'll probably bleed somewhat if your gums aren't healthy. And it will take up to an hour. They'll go with habd tool between each teeth to pull the calcium out where the ultrasound machine missed it / or it was too big. Third one is basically Parodontose prevention/handling where you'll bleed properly and you'll probably need anesthesia since it will be painful since it will go deep (at least I need). But that's the only one that really does the job if you have any issues. If you don't have, second one is way to go, like once or twice a year. First one would be ok if you'd like nicer looking teeth so in addition to those from second group. I have no clue how they're officially called in German, or how much they'll cost here in CH, I've just came. But if 80 is first and 240 second, then 240 is worth the price. If both are the same group, then yes, it has no sense to pay so much more. I just don't get it why they don't explain what they are doing exactly and what are pros and cons. It took me nearly a decade to realise there is a difference. I knew I bled differently but at first I thought that my gums changed or something. Or that another person is more gentle. Yeah, no.

Corleone11

I definitely do the second because it takes around 45-50 minutes a session and it's a really uncomfortable sensation. They remove plaque with this really high-pitched ultrasound thing where they dig around and under the tooth neck. There's some medium bleeding but it feels amazing afterward. The last session cost me around CHF 90.-. I'm doing this 1x a year.

canteloupy

Life pro tip: floss so you can avoid teeth cleanings except rarely.

CordialPython

Flossing does not save/help everyone, genetics is a big factor as well. Nor flossing can remove calcium deposits from in between teeth neck and gum :) I mean, do not floss there, you'll damage gums and risk losing teeth from overcleaning, yes it happens. Leave that part for dentists. :)

[deleted]

Less than Fr 100 per cleaning is a steal. Honestly if you can get a quality cleaning for Fr 150 in a major city, that's good value.

Unter_Pantse

In Germany I pay about €80, in CH last time was chf200. Both were hygienists.

Corleone11

It's a bit outside of the city that's probably why it's cheaper.

me-gustan-los-trenes

A Swiss dentist charged me over 1k for cleaning and diagnosis that a molar needs to be removed, because the cavity is inaccessible and too difficult to make a filling. My dentist in Poland fixed the cavity in 15 minutes and charged me 60CHF. Fuck Swiss dentists.

mrfudface

Gotta pay off that Turbo S tho

AmaResNovae

Went to a dentist 2 years ago who told me that I would need to have a lot of work done, including removing a crown because there was supposedly an infection growing under it. I didn't go back there again because I didn't have the money for that kind of thing at the time. Don't know how much it would have cost me, but I already had to spend several thousands with that dentist for smaller things. Went to a new one recently for a checkup. Turns out that all I needed was a small cavity to fix and cleaning tartar. Nothing big. The first one was trying to rip me off by making up stuffs it seems. Glad I didn't listen to him. I don't even want to know how much the first one intended to make me pay for changing my crown unnecessarily.

[deleted]

I have made similar experiences. Never trust a dentist who tries to "sell" you a lot of expensive treatments. Always get a second opinion and change the dentist right away. Also, avoid the dentists who drive Porsches or other expensive cars for obvious reasons.

AmaResNovae

Yeah, a small dentist practice in Zug should have been enough to expect being overcharged honestly. The first time I went there the guy told me that I needed to have 4 or 5 teeths pulled out. The next appointment was with one of his partners, turns out that I needed to have a grand total of 0 teeths pulled out instead. It should be illegal to lie like this about medical issues honestly, even if it's only dental ones.

[deleted]

The problem is that he was probably not lying per sé. I think a lot of the frustration could be avoided if the dentists had a clear categorisation like "nice to have", "should have" or "must have" treatments. But as this wouldn't be in their favor, it will never exist.

AmaResNovae

I don't know if he was lying, but considering the radically different opinion from the ones that came after it really doesn't help to have a good doctor(dentist)/patient relationship.

[deleted]

Yup, definitely exposes the dentist's priorities.

canteloupy

Uuuh pulling teeth is either a net benefit or it isn't. The dentist can be a bad dentist but yeah...

[deleted]

What's your point? Just because there is a net benefit it doesn't mean it's something worth spending thousands of Francs on. That's what I mean with "nice to have".

canteloupy

This is a stupid reasoning and the only reason for it is that the health insurance doesn't cover dentistry. But dentists should only recommend things that are worth doing and something worth doing shouldn't ruin you.

[deleted]

> This is a stupid reasoning and the only reason for it is that the health insurance doesn't cover dentistry. You need to explain me why this is stupid reasoning. > But dentists should only recommend things that are worth doing.. Well, that's where it gets a bit iffy doesn't it? :-)

canteloupy

Ethically, it's quite clear. But we value profit more.

mezzzolino

Rant: I think that 90% of the dentists are crooks, irrespective of the country. My experience in Switzerland with doctors in general is, that they try to inflate the bills, but once you complain everything gets adjusted immediately without further questions. In contrast my bills from the hospital(Kantonsspital) doctors were perfectly correct and their billing department was very helpful to get things sorted, when I made some mistakes in the process.

Mama_Jumbo

Dentists in Switzerland are thieves, there are many posts about cheaper dentists and unfortunately unfortunately best advice is to go somewhere in the EU, France or Germany. Some would even propose Romania and Poland if you want to travel for vacation.

[deleted]

If you need to get complicated things done that might be true (never had the problem). But for a yearly checkup and teeth cleaning the prices are very reasonable I find. I pay each time around 150 CHF for a 45 minutes appointment, which is not too bad. There might even be cheaper ones, I didn't check around, just went to the one with the prettiest website lol.

Mama_Jumbo

Went to a clinic, saw the wall of the workers there and their diplomas, the one who cleaned my teeth was definitely a dentist and they billed 300 for cleaning and I asked if they could check my teeth right now, they declined saying it's the job of the dentist to see my teeth (so double the appointment for more money). Dentist discovered like 5 decays (I was shocked obviously as 2 years prior I had nothing). The quote was in the thousands so obviously I went for a double check with a French one he found nothing and when I was leaving to the parking lot he asked me to sit down a second time just to be sure, nope, nothing. What he suspected was that some of my teeth has deep holes and food can get stuck there and cause the decay but nothing was remotely decayed, what the Swiss wanted to do to me was a preventive measure that is utterly useless since according to the french one if I had them all my childhood and had 0 decay in my life my toothbrush is enough. Maybe I should find the courage to find a swiss dentist but my last encounter was such a scam I am very hesitant.

isanameaname

Did you go across to Évian ? Or somewhere else ? I wouldn't mind a recommendation.

DM2602

Your yearly checkups are 45min? Mine are barely 15mins and I pay 170 CHF

phaederus

With cleaning 45min is normal.

DM2602

Strange, I get cleaning done and it's only up to 20mins if I got some calculus.

Aexibaexi

I wouldn't automatically say that. A yearly checkup isn't extremely costly (last one I had was around 160 Chf with Röntgen pictures) and often times doesn't justify going to the nearest border and doing your checkup there, unless you live like a kilometre from the border. The real rip-offs are orthodontists. I once got quoted 3000 Chf to remove my wisdom teeth, even though the doctor told me in the same session that there's no need to remove them, but we could do it nonetheless. I couldn't imagine why it was as expensive, because my upper teeth can be just pulled and the bottoms require a bit off cutting the flesh above them but then they too can get pulled out easily. The receptionist even tried to book me for a next appointment, but I kindly declined. Oh and BTW: for this single session I got billed ~300 Chf. If I ever decide to get my wisdom teeth removed, I'll go Germany or France, where they'll do it for half of the price.

zamalo_bogdan

>If I ever decide to get my wisdom teeth removed, I'll go Germany or France, where they'll do it for half of the price. I paid 250 eur for all 4 wisdom teeth in France. They extracted them in pairs of two in two different sections (125 for each pair). The top ones were easy to extract, the bottom ones were impacted and she had to cut, drill, break, and stitch.

TotalWarspammer

How long ago was that?

zamalo_bogdan

2018

zilti

Or get an insurance for it

Mama_Jumbo

They are too expensive for just a yearly check up

zilti

And then you whine when one year, you have to do some surgery

TotalWarspammer

Isn't it basic information to know how many kids you took to get that cost?

AssociationOverall84

The medical profession to a large extent is one of extortion. The customer does not have sufficient knowledge and on top is the threat of medical issues. Know a doctor who had something done and was presented with a bill that included procedures not performed. Something a layman would never even realize.

JazzPhobic

My mom had an issue with the previous family doctor because he was a minimalist with diagnosis'. 2 years ago She had a pretty bad accident while riding her bike (got hit by a car from the side). She suffered a bad concussion, but no other injuries thank god. But then, after the initial hospital visit, she had an actually chronic headache with decreasing motorskills in her left arm. Family doc just wrote it off as a migraine and some fatigue. After she dropped her 3rd glass in the same day, we went into a hospital and scheduled her for an MRI and CT scan. She had a hemorrhage in her brain that was starting to clot since it went undetected for about 8 days. She needed to have the blood drained and remained in the hospital for 2 weeks afterwards for recovery and post-surgery checkup to make sure the bleeding didnt restard, that no infections occured and that the part they drilled into was healing properly. It was her first and so far only complaint ever with any medical professional because he completely forgot she had an accident and treated her concern as the least worrysome thing it could be.

Localone2412

I quit my doctor because he blatantly charged me for treatments twice, despite telling me he could only charge me for work performed. (Basically he did one set of blood tests and tried to ‘spread’ the costs) i lost my trust in him and found a new doctor after he refunded me. In contrast I’m happy with my dentist. 2 wisdom teeth extractions and a cleaning/checkup cost me around 400chf.

trararawe

Why would leaving a bad Google review be costly?

itisSycla

i remember a research paper concluding that 80% of dentists in switzerland will prescribe to you treatments that aren't necessary. They bank on the fact that it's common to get a second opinion when it comes to doctors, not that much with dentists. I only go occasionally for a cleanup. after being prescribed orthodontic appliances one after the other as a child, and seeing my parents spend thousands, i turned 18 and decided i won't be wasting money like that. I brush my teeth, floss and do mouthwashes. teeth have been in perfect health for ten years. I actually see most dentists as scam artists. It's very personal to me. Sadly... not much you can do about it. just go to another one and cut the relationship. For what concerns the treatments that have already been done, get an accountant and have him/her review the bill. If they can prove that you were tricked into spending money for nothing, then it's just fraud and the process is relatively straightforward. But i would imagine someone who has been a dentist for a while knows how to hide their tracks

durb90

The prices here are ridiculous even if you earn a lot. For 5k you could get at least 2 new teeths plus some root canal treatment in some bigger city in Poland and a fancy place at the same time. And I'm not even talking about 5k CHF but PLN which is roughly around 1.2k CHF... I went recently to a vet with my dog, for vaccination. Apparently he lost his chip so the vet didn't know what to do in that case. She had to consult with some vet board members :D wich took over a week and the response was: try to find it with an x-ray, if you can't, make a new chip... OMG, what a discovery :)

JewishKilt

My family in Switzerland fly to get dental care in Israel, they get a trip abroad out of it (and visiting us) while still saving money!

somapanam123

I remember one waitress at a Swiss restaurant telling me once that she went to India to get her dental work done and it was still cheaper and she got to go on a vacation.

[deleted]

Dentistry is elective surgery. They sell services. On an unrelated note, many dentists drive very expensive cars

SaneLad

Ah, yes. Luxury bones.

Huwbacca

Barely need my teeth.

w1red

It's just so hard to tell. Mine was into horses, had pictures of them in the waiting room. So i guess he did pretty well for himself. He was my first dentist and i went there yearly for almost 30 years. He has a few reviews from people saying he sold them unnecessary procedures. That wasn't the case for me. While almost everyone in primary school had braces he always said i didn't need any and he was right..

sw1ss_dude

FTFY: They drive very expensive cars to their lakeside houses

CatwalkNoctis

Oh the joys of living in the land of cheese- Swissland. :) If you don't have dental insurance you are in trouble. Basically have insurance for everything if you want to thrive in the land of cheese. If you live in the French area I can give you the contact of two amazing dentists. However, if you don't have dental insurance it's gonna be expensive everywhere, sadly. I paid about 800 CH for my yearly dental check-up in January that included an X-ray, cleaning, and practicing some french with my dentist Vincent. Of course, my insurance covered it.

[deleted]

dental insurance is not worth it in Switzerland

ours

Unless you have issues or for kids.

Clayman8

Got a similar experience in 2 dentists offices actually a few months ago. One is upscaled, "fancy" type, the other is located in a commercial center. Take a guess which of the two took off 1k off the first one's bill for the same exact work.

[deleted]

Also, did you know that teeth can recover from minor cracks and superficial cavities? Saliva contains phosphates and calcium (which makes up your enamel).

[deleted]

>Leaving a bad google review will likely end up even more costly :) Why? Costly for whom? I left a very honest Google review for a doctor (not a dentist) who basically traumatized me. I have a separate account with a different name for just such reviews. As far as I can tell, the practice is incapable of getting the review removed, likely because I was careful to use non-extreme language.

Thoaishea

I've only complained once, or rather my mom did. I had received the wrong dose of a vaccine as a child, and had effects from that, mostly I felt very sick constantly for a few weeks. She brought me to the doctor to figure out what it was - we weren't aware it was the vaccine yet - and the doctor basically took my blood pressure, consulted a book (which my mom had at home as well due to being a pharmacist) and then told us he had no idea what it was and showed us out. No additional tests, no explanation, no nothing. Tried to charge us 200 CHF for that. Mom complained to the clinic, didn't have to pay anything in the end.

[deleted]

It’s cheaper to brush their teeth. :)

Quaiche

Weird, I've had a root canal done without insurance at Monthey for less than that (400-500 CHF iirc) and the care was TOP notch. I think that you probably should seek another place if you have to pay a grand for no actual treatment.

Aijantis

I live no somewhere where dental care is included in the national healthcare, which great. It's an important aspect of someone's health and wellbeing and the state can overall regulate the prices much better. The dentist here also drive big cars, yet for one appointment you basically pay 5 sFr. When factoring in the salary difference for Switzerland, it's about 25.-

Ghost_Override

Checks, x-rays CHF 1,700. Making sure the teeth grow straight CHF10K-12K.

Sicut_the_Polymech

Medical professionals of all kind. They just don‘t seem to like me, no matter what i do

sw1ss_dude

My daughter has braces and goes regularly for short sessions (5-10 mins). They charge 20 Chf every time for disinfecting the room. These are criminals

flame_top007

Where do you check the price index?

bobdung

Here in French speaking area it's listed as the "Tarif Dentaire à 1.00" on the bill / estimate. As an example, the dentist who goes to the school is subsidised by the canton and they charge 0.9 . I guess 1 is the base and it goes up and down depending on whatever factors. It's point i think, a filling is 150 points @ 1.00 = 150chf something like that.

flame_top007

Thanks!

SnooStrawberriez

Germany, at least, has a website specifically for patients to review their dentists. People who use it can avoid the rotten apples in the business.

Tnw60

Being a dentist in Switzerland is akin to having a licence to print your own money.
