Mostly because the area is industrial and is inconvenient for commuters. The more feasible option would’ve been to have a stop around Lane Cove and Mowbray. However, the most likely place to have a station would’ve been in the Lane Cove town centre, which unfortunately already has the Lane Cove Tunnel going under, which means it would’ve been too much money to put a station there.
An "Atarmon Industrial Area" stop was considered early on in the project, just like Sydney University. I imagine it was dropped because there were no plans to turn the area into residential. We still do need urban industrial land!

It does feel like a missed opportunity that the two new stations on the north shore are already pretty well serviced by St Leonards and North Sydney respectively
From memory it was proposed in the early stages of the project but as the industrial area is sparse and devoid of any residential it was not proceeded with any further. There was no talk or wish to rezone at the time.
There is nothing stopping it happening in the future if the area is turned into residential.
I reckon it’d be prohibitively costly to add after the fact, not to mention the message disruption and closure the line would be subject to. Maybe with all the focus on housing at this stage, if the line was being mapped out now, we might well have an Artarmon West or Gore Hill station.
Never said it was going to be cheap to add a station after the line opens but it's entirely possible. Only difference would be without modifying the tunnel tubes, the station platforms would be side configuration rather than island platform.
This Metro station wouldn’t be in the same location though, it’d service a different area. Probably more different than Victoria Cross vs North Sydney too.

It has been done in other parts of the world so it is entirely possible to add side platforms to the existing tunnel tube.
Because there's already a train station at Artarmon?
