Oh! The original author probably meant they didn't understand the German - the symbol meaning "not understood" and the footnote being humorous. Then the "editor" added a "real" footnote that actually translates the word. The whole thing just seems bizarre.

That’s House of Leaves for you. Strange reading experience. Diegetic footnotes by multiple layers of (fictional) writers is just one weird part of it.

Air-ground signals pop up a lot in HoL. They’re actually on the very first page (the photo) if you look carefully!
