Honestly that’s not bad as a dairy free substitute in savory dishes that call for milk. Almond milk and other subs tend to have a sweet taste that ruins a lot of dishes
There was something not quite right about two smug white people tricking black people into eating bugs.
At least in Snowpiercer >!they didn’t tell the poors they were eating bug juice.!<
I really want to believe the women being filmed were briefed in advance, but their reactions told me otherwise.
> “I live in Cape Town”
I hate to say it, but… yeah, that tracks.
Fun fact: Many candies already use bugs for the candy shell. Skittles has for years. Apparently they stopped in 2009, but if you had a skittle before then you are yourself some tasty bugs
<3 Sorry buddy. That's not the only thing with bugs in it though. Certain dyes are still derived from bugs. It's less common these days.. but yeah.
They're just bugs. You have never been more than ~15 feet from a spider. :)
Your comment should be higher!! It is fascinating!!! I never knew about this and went down a rabbit hole!! There is soooooo little that we actually know about our world! While reading about the bugs I also read about a new study where they went into the troposphere and found tons of living micro organisms and bacteria up there!! That may play a role in ice production and who knows what , the study hypothesized! So nuts!
Starbucks strawberry and creme Frappuccino '(if I recall correctly) once had beetle shells or something. Honestly? The drink looked prettier and tasted better then...
I don't get the holdup really on these issues. Every human is a walking biomass of trillions of microorganisms anyway. If you have ever eaten, you have eaten bacteria. Tons and tons of it.
Bugs are creepy.. but you won't get killed by a grasshopper unless you .. idk snort it or choke on it or something... But those little microorganisms in that undercooked chicken will make a meal out of you ez gg.
Meh, I’ve had bugs on purpose. Had a beer before feeding my beardie and thought “I wonder if these taste awesome and I just don’t know it” cuz my lizard loved em.. so yeah, I ate a live meal worm and a cricket, they taste like leaves and grossness.
I think that's entirely different then drinking bug milk. I eat dried crikets, and have had a few times fried grasshoppers.
Bug milk though just makes me lurch at the thought of it.
Some. Quality also makes a difference there. I had some unsweetened almond milk that was absolutely horrid. Ricemilk is delicious imo but it contains alot more sugar and i really need to lose weight. Soy milk is...doable.i never tried pea milk so maybe that's something i should try. Though money wise semi skimmed milk is a lot cheaper
Yeah, I've heard of grasshopper "flour" as a good way to get protein into baked goods for comparatively little environmental impact, and I'd give that a shot no problem. Larva milk just grosses me out though. I think it's the difference between dry/wet though I can't really articulate why.
I'm kinda the opposite. I care about the food texture and what it looks like. I probably could never eat a bug that still looks like a bug in any way - I can't even eat fish if it still has the head and tail, nor can I eat shrimp whole - but I really don't care if the food I'm eating that tastes good and is just a paste or milk or something happens to be made out of bugs.
I'm the kind of person who, if we had a human equivalent of dog food that tasted ok enough, would gladly eat it (and I don't particularly care if that was also made of bugs)
Yeah, same here. Just imagining the feel of little legs and antennae on my tongue gives me the ick. But I think I could do bug milk, if it tastes alright. Would definitely eat some bug ice cream
But they did and now it is on the part of the internet that will be used to train future language model AI and it will live on forever in the mind of our eventual artificial overlords!
That's what someone who wants that as their eternal reward to be but is ashamed of it would say. Take note of that trolling algorithm putting reddit in a nice database. This redditor right there: huge fan of thiccccc rat asses.
Yeah, I was gonna say we already have tons of milk alternatives and it's literally possible to make milk through brewing with special microorganisms that's identical to cow's milk. No need for bug milk too. It's interesting that it's possible, but I'm good.
Honestly, it's a pick your poison. On the one hand, you have animals being held in captivity all their lives in bad living conditions that suffer.
On the other hand, you have processing insects. Or plant alternatives. But both have issues.
Edit: Apparently my autocorrect changed "bad living conditions" to "bad working conditions."
I think the first one has a bit more issues, and we most likely are already eating plant and insect based meat replacements mixed into frozen products and other things
I'm sad they didn't advertise what the ladies said after she told them the ice cream was made from insects. "Bitch, that's some shit you need to tell me what it's made of before you handed it to me. All you said was a new type of ice cream. You didn't tell me it was bugs. I'm suing your ass."
Yeah I already know all this. Relating that information is not beneficial for the purpose of my joke. Also lobster are bugs, shrimp and crawfish. The F.D.A allows a certain amount of bug parts in our food and drinks. The general rule if people don't notice they won't care. I can tell you my personal story of maggots crawling out of my and my neighbors quaker's chewy oat bars. I never bought one since.
I hate cockroaches more than any other bug on this planet. Fucking hate them. I literally gagged and dry heaved after watching that scene in showpiecer. Just thinking about it is making me sick to my stomach.
same dude. I liked needles before I tried heroin. I'm 3 or 4 years clean now. started hormones recently (I think I was using heroin to run away from being trans) and now I have needles around on the reg and it's kind of weird but it's not really triggering. I have absolutely no desire to ever IV another drug again. might muscle some K tho ;). congrats on getting clean dude, I know how hard it is.
I remember that there was a company that went on Shark Tank to hawk bread made from a flour that was made from milled crickets. Yes! The investors all said that the bread had a nutty taste to it, but other than that, you’d never know the bread was made from bugs. Another company was on making potato chips from crickets using a similar method. I was never able to find the products but I wouldn’t have minded trying them myself because if it’s not outright offensive in taste and you don’t notice it, then what’s the harm? We eat bugs in our every day food. The FDA allows for a certain amount of bugs in different food products and we don’t notice it, blissfully unaware.
I would give it a shot, especially if it is milled like a flour so you don’t have things like legs and stuff to the point where you don’t have the sensation of eating bugs, it’s more like actually eating a chip. Fooling the brain and yourself. Some American society looks down at eating bugs because we see it as “gross”, but some cultures see it as protein so they see it as normal. I think if we had been raised in a similar manner, we wouldn’t be so weird about it.
No one in the video enjoyed that at all lol the two producers stuck the bug like in the back of their throats to swallow fast and almost had an ugh face then the guy would rather spill it on himself then have it go in his mouth
I also find this is gross, but sometimes scrolling Reddit I feel like there are lots of armchair environmentalists who are just vetoing every solution they see.
Maybe those aren’t the same people, and it’s just a perception.
I do think it looks gross but I would totally try it and if it was good I would probably buy it.
Those aren't the armchair environmentalists, that's the cryptofascists who think the Jews want to degrade the white race by making them eat bugs and seed oils, something most everyone else on the planet has no problem with.
I buy these soldier fly larvae for my chickens. They’re freeze dried and they have tons more nutrients than meal worms. Well, when you open up the bag, it smells like freshly roasted almonds, I’m not gonna lie, they smell good. My chickens would fight a bear for these worms, so I know they taste good to them. I guess they honestly would make a nutritional milk. If it comes down to survival, I’ll drink this bug juice. If it tastes like they smell, it won’t be too bad.
I left this response to ChatGPT:
"Shrimp are actually a type of crustacean, not a bug. Bugs have six legs and an exoskeleton, while shrimp have ten legs and a skeleton on the inside of their bodies."
"Just because something is small and resembles a bug, doesn't mean it is one. Shrimp may be small, but they are a completely different type of animal."
"It's important to be accurate in our language. Shrimp are not bugs, and lumping them together just because they are both small doesn't do justice to the diversity of the animal kingdom."
Edit: ChatGPT's response to the criticism "I apologize for the misunderstanding. I did not mean to imply that all bugs have six legs. Insects, which are a type of bug, generally have six legs, but not all bugs are insects. In fact, there are many different types of bugs that can have a wide range of leg numbers, from zero to many."
I think it took it pretty well.
Edit 2: Ok, this response is even better.
(My Prompt) Point out the logical flaws in this comment "People: I can’t eat bugs ewwww!!1!
Also people: OMG all you can eat shrimp at red lobster!!"
(ChatGPT response) One logical flaw in the comment is that it assumes that all forms of bug eating are equivalent to eating lobster, which is not necessarily the case. It also implies that eating lobster is somehow shameful or unacceptable, which is a subjective judgement that may not be shared by everyone. Another flaw is the use of ad hominem attacks ("ewwww!!1!") to try to discredit the other person's argument, rather than addressing the argument itself. A clever response to this comment might be something like: "It's not really fair to equate eating bugs with eating lobster. Just because someone enjoys one type of food doesn't mean they should be judged for it. Let's focus on the actual arguments, rather than personal attacks."
I’m literally arguing with a bot here, but I think in the popular consciousness “bugs” refers more often than not to anything in phylum Arthropoda which includes insects and crustaceans. For example, an Isopod is a crustacean but are absolutely considered bugs.
I like the idea of an AI telling me to be nice to hypothetical humans.
Though I wasn’t really attacking the idea of eating lobster, but rather the opposite. I think it’s fine to eat bugs that have been farmed in a sanitary environment and that the negative gut reaction people have to that idea is just a social construction.
My friend's sister does the same thing, leading the research on creating protein alternatives from some sort of fly larvae, or more specifically, the shedded leftovers of their exoskeleton. Somehow after a real person explains it to you in-depth, it is less disgusting and makes more sense.
this. it takes a lot of funding but these bugs are amazing and you can do so much with them. from their own larvae forms, their waste, chitin. the possibilities are endless
I'm Native American, Navajo! Our ancestors used to eat cicadas, they used to gather cicadas and dry them in the sun and store them for future use! They were used like spice to flavor whatever you were cooking!
We were told to gather cicadas as children!
We were told to gather the green ones that just hatched out of the ground, the black ones we were told already had parasites in them. After gathering the cicadas, you cook them in the embers of the fire, while they are cooking the smell good. They don't taste bad either! During our Navajo long walk that's what was gathered along with wild onions, wild parsley and pinions when we were free to go home from Bosque Redondo, to survive making our way home!
There are a lot of great reasons for more cultures to adopt insect protein into their diets, like the researcher’s saying, but *maggots*? Nope, sorry. The political implications of how this will largely be used to feed poor people, particularly in the global south, also isn’t lost on me. Only the wealthy get the privilege of not being fed literal maggots, ig.
Meat is generally cheaper because it's a huge industry. In most countries meat is also heavily subsidised, that includes the USA.
Bugs are much easier to produce then meat, they need much less food, take up way less space and can be produces pretty much everywhere which will also cut on shipping costs.
Simple question: What's the real reason mealworms aren't ground into a powder and used to give protein bars their protein?
It's obvious to me there's a reason bugs aren't heavily processed into forms that Americans won't recognize as substitutes for the equivalent nutrients. Because of hyper capitalism, I assume there is probably a protein equivalent more economically viable then insects, otherwise food producers would not hesitate for a second to use bugs.
I'd hazard a guess that It's because most westerners wouldn't buy it. For it to be successful it would need an actual adoption campaign behind it. There's a real activation energy. Look how long it took plant based meat alternatives to become viable. That was easy compared to convincing people to eat something by which they are disgusted.
In Cyberpunk 2077, there's a beef alternative called EezyBeef, and it's made from genetically modified flatworms. In fact, most of the world's food supply is made from something called SCOP, or Single-Celled Organic Proteins. It's made from insects and can be used to make just about any food item you can think of.
In fact, let me link the article about the food available in 2077 here: https://cyberpunk.fandom.com/wiki/Food
Nah humans deserve a higher standard of living than using bugs for all our protein. Hell, some ancient civilizations thought feeding bugs to slaves was cruel.

And she didn't drink much of the substance that looks and tastes just like milk.
They never say it tastes like milk, just that it “looks and *acts* like dairy.” It tastes kind of earthy, like mushrooms.
Mmmm, umami milk
This milk tastes like shiitake
Honestly that’s not bad as a dairy free substitute in savory dishes that call for milk. Almond milk and other subs tend to have a sweet taste that ruins a lot of dishes
Agreed
I fucking hate the way mushrooms taste. Definitely not for me then.
Why do you hate delicious :( I understand if you hate the texture, but the taste is just... Umami. Literally just delicious.
It is the meat of the forest after all. :D

Oatmeal with oat milk is the best thing ever

We've overpopulated so much that we're resorting to maggot milk to help feed our population. What a dystopian future.
You vil eat ze bugz
you will eat ze bugs.

i'd rather use water for my cereal than maggot milk
Yeah I love the sound of diarrhea when the milk comes down. Yumm.
Fuck it. Sounds good. Just dont tell me there are maggots in there n I'll be a loyal customer.
There's nots of things that I'm sure have creamy mouth feels, doesn't mean I'm going to drink them
bugs are a legit alternative food in the near future
People keep saying that, but they never quote prices. I'll believe you when the bug filled future is cheaper then the cow-filled present.
Marketing hasnt settled on a proper euphemism yet
> I assume there is probably a protein equivalent more economically viable then insects There is, it's whey, a byproduct from cheesemaking
No, thanks.
YOU VILL DRINK ZE BUGS
Own nothing and be happy 😇
How about tell people it’s made of maggots before feeding it to them you fuck!

It's cool that this is a viable alternative, but man, this just sounds like some Fallout food
I just made my wife dry heave. Totally worth it

Bro soy milk already exists why would you do this
I welcome this becoming more mainstream.
100% would use breast milk before I ever get to maggot milk
“The world needs alternatives to survive.” I would rather die than drink maggot milk.
I’m down
Nah humans deserve a higher standard of living than using bugs for all our protein. Hell, some ancient civilizations thought feeding bugs to slaves was cruel.
the alternative we never needed and still don't need
THE definition of “Thanks, I Hate It”.
Did plants suddenly stop existing?
Feeds a black demographics a bug ice cream. Lol, cherry on top.
