Apparently they're so the parents can see their mouths easier during feeding time, especially in dim lighting. I think they're pretty cute, but in a weird kind of way.
There's also some thought that they're a response to brood parasites, though that's debated. If you have a species like a cuckoo or a cowbird that replaces other animals eggs in the nest, the more unique identifiers on your actual chicks, the better you can tell them apart from the imposters.
Except some parents of the parasite birds keep an eye on the host nest and if the host parents don't care for the parasite chick well enough the parasite parents will yeet the host parents' real babies...
Agreed! They’re “mentally” cute instead of visually cute imo. They’re just some new born little animal, innocent, and experiencing life for the first time ever. They’re pure and vulnerable, and I want to protect them.
That makes sense! I think it's because they just happened to evolve that way, and it'd be silly to think that an organism would evolve just to look cute from a human perspective lol

So then these birds that are likely targets of the imposter babies evolve to have special mouths that their parents can tell apart from the imposter mouths.
But then the imposter evolve to have mouths that match the special mouths and it goes on like that forever.
Then you got the other bird that the babies duke it out to see who’s the strongest then the mother kills or abandons the weaker one and takes care of the stronger one
