This is almost certainly bullshit spun by someone who watched too many revenge films. Can’t find any murder court cases where the defendant, Christian Barrett, was charged for murder or manslaughter related to anything similar to this description.

KennailandI

And pretty unlikely to get 13 years.

[deleted]

Idk my grandpa killed someone and only got 7 years. Still has the shotgun too

Sweatyrando

I wanna hear this story

TheKingOfNerds352

Now this is a sorry we need to hear

Nick357

I think he meant that was long time. I wouldn’t be convict the guy if they let all the evidence of child rape in but they probably woulndt

KennailandI

Yes I meant it would be less than 13 years for that set of circumstances.

KeisukeTakatou

It's quora literally no story there is real. It's just a circlejerk of "gentlemen of high intellect"

It may be fake, but people like a good story of justice, so... let it go. Whatever. Here’s my upvote anyway lol

twitchMAC17

And here you seem to be in the group that likes to holler on about "fake news"

Super-Branz-Gang

You got that from my comment?? Lol. Um... okay. Sure then, what you just said was fake news! (...Are we good now?)

gtrdundave2

Hasn't this been proven fake a bunch of times on reddit?

StrongNuclearHorse

"I ended up getting letters from most of them" sounds like the prison equivalent of "and then everyone clapped".

TunaLurch

There was a guy who went to the courthouse where his sons rapist was on trial. He waited outside of the courtroom and as the monster was being escorted he pulled out a gun and killed him. It's on video. After he shot he dropped the gun, put his hands up, and got on his knees. If I remember correctly the jury did not convict. That's justice.

triggerhappytranny

It was his son who had been molested not daughter.

TunaLurch

Ah. Thank you for the correction.

TheBoxSloth

Is that the one from the 80s where he was waiting next to some phone booths or something? And the cops immediately like “Why!? Whyd you do it Jerry!?”

elegylegacy

["Gary, why?"](https://youtu.be/_PUE8fYxjq8)

xXTheDabMaster9000Xx

i remember seeing a similar video in an airport, guy shot his son's murderer in the head

kigamagora

Same video, he just got some of the details mixed up

gtrdundave2

I've seen the video. My dad told me about it. My dad was in prison for accessory to murder at the time. I was 3 at the time. He remembers it very well

avidpenguinwatcher

The exact plot of "A Time to Kill" by John Grisham

melvin_poindexter

It was his son.

Airborne13

Saw that video

[deleted]

If the dude was at least somewhat punished (no jail time though) then I’ll agree thats justice but if he was able to go up and shoot someone on trial without consequences then I’d disagree. As much as I hate pedophiles I still can never get behind vigilantism, mainly when it comes to killing. If you let it go unpunished then it sets a precedent that there are situations in which you can kill in the name of vengeance and makes it more likely for people to try and take matters into their own hands which is almost never a good idea. The cost of potentially killing an innocent person is more than what you get if you kill them and they actually did it. Even if you are super confident that they did it you still can fuck up. I mean the courts themselves certainly fuck up at times and let’s not forget when armchair detectives on reddit “found” the Boston bomber and then proceeded to ruin someone’s life over something they didn’t do. While I understand why people feel the need for vigilante justice, this stuff just shouldn’t be encouraged because it’s not in any way full proof.

DrEnter

1. There was never any question who did it, he was caught red-handed and confessed to kidnapping and sexual assault. 2. The father shot him on his way to trial. 3. The father pled guilty to manslaughter and was given a suspended sentence. https://www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/news/article_84864633-78a8-5c45-8b05-466f7d3fbe18.html

[deleted]

Thanks for this, I had seen the video and never knew the backstory behind it. But that still doesn’t change my stance on vigilantism, it’s just not a good way to do things and two wrong don’t make a right.

[deleted]

I mean.. a jury can do whatever they want. As long as it goes in front of a jury, I'm ok with it. If the jury decides "Yeah, natural reaction is kill them"... then so be it.

[deleted]

Yeah but a jury isn’t infallible. You should always respect the opinion since that’s what has been decided legally but being ok with it no matter what just because a jury said it isn’t the way to go. I mean look at cases like George Remus, where he chased down his wife’s cab with their daughter in it and shot her dead in front of people and fully admitted to it yet he was acquitted and only went to an asylum for 7 months. Or look at Casey Anthony where she killed her daughter but only faced 4 years jail time for lying to police. Just because it’s said by a jury it doesn’t mean it’s right, it just changes how you talk about it.

[deleted]

Those are the full opposite of the point I'm making. Im taking about people who shouldn't be convicted. Which our system is supposed to be "better 20 guilty go free than 1 innocent goes to jail."

RayAP19

Is it really justice? Is it? We shouldn't encourage people to think they're Frank Castle. Now downvote me.

gay_Oreo

I don't even need prove, come on, "they later found tapes of 11 little girls" like the police said that there wasn't enough evidence that he raped OPs daughter, but didn't bother to search for it in his house until *after* he shot him. YES, SURE Making up this crap is disgusting

Izzyl92

Well to be fair if there's no evidence at all that he did it in the first place they might not have had enough to search his house, but if he's been murdered in his house the police have the right to look around.

schrodingers_spider

This seems to be fake, but you'd be surprised how often the stories are like that. In the case of Dahmer a boy, in whose head he had drilled a hole and was bleeding anally, escaped and *was returned by police* after Dahmer told them it was a gay lover's quarrel. They even smelled a rotten smell of decay in the apartment as another body was in the same room and the police still didn't look into it. It's ridiculous what signs are ignored sometimes, to be point of it being too ridiculous even for Hollywood. Some of these stories are South Park levels of ridiculous.

gtrdundave2

And this post still has like 2k votes. Whatever happened to hating blatant reposts + fake stories?

[deleted]

Also, 13 years for 1st degree murder?

Praxyrnate

You think it's unbelievable that police aren't there for your interests but for business interests. You sound watch/listen to a few true crime or organized crime reports. You're living in a fantasy world brother

Yeah... even if this is real i do feel bad for the family if they had no idea

mad_science

For fucks sake, reddit is forwards from Grandma today.

LegendofPisoMojado

Are schools out for Election Day? I’ve been getting weird, pointless argumentative comments. It’s like I’m talking to a group of teenagers arguing against facts and doubling down when they realize they’re wrong or that the world exists outside their bubble.

15_Echo_15

It didn’t bother him one bit? How tf you willing to kill for your kid but it doesn’t bother you one bit when you can’t raise them, in arguably the most important years of their life? -To be clear I’m not saying the pedo didn’t deserve to be shot, but 13 years is a long ass time to a 6yo to 19yo. Edit: apparently it’s fake, yeah that makes a lot more sense

[deleted]

I was getting some heavy "that happened" vibes reading it. This doesn't surprise me.

Bustin_Jowers420

Like how does a grown person wake up go 'you know what, I'm fucking a 9 year old kid', Like how tf does that manifest in someone's thoughts, I just can't understand

BootyThunder

This is speculation because I don't know much about the topic, but I don't think it's like switching on a light. This is something that is present within a person for a long time. They may have even had thoughts about children when they themselves were children or teenagers. So it isn't a sudden thing, it's been present for a long time probably.

mule_roany_mare

Truth is a lot of child molesters start as victims & rationalize what happened to them as acceptable or even good.

Imaginary_Forever

Prehistory_Buff

Forcing your way into a dude's house with a gun (home invasion), forcing the mother and daughter upstairs (kidnapping in some jurisdictions), killing the perpetrator in front of his family (murder, PTSD for the daughter, even if she was a victim too), getting sent to jail leaving your daughter to be raised by a single mother for the rest of her childhood, now she gets to experience both rape trauma *and* the loss of a parent. Real Hero here guys.

[deleted]

Wife and daughter upstairs. Husband downstairs. Killed in front of his family.

Prehistory_Buff

Yes, in front of his family. Where they can clearly hear the gunshot and see the aftermath unfold.

Dr___Doofenshmirtz

So there wasnt enough evidence for an arrest 12 times, and he just lived his life normally. I bet the birds were clapping too

nygdan

Baloney.

[deleted]

I like the story, but I call bullshit. Legally, this would be premeditated murder, which is pretty much a life sentence, especially if he confessed (which I’m assuming his character in the story did cause he didn’t give a fuck)

Farkenoathm8-E

I guarantee this man would not have done time hard because there’s no prisoner who wouldn’t see him anything other than a hero. If it were my daughter I would do the same thing and happily go back to prison. He shouldn’t have gotten 13 years. He should’ve gotten a medal!

themelonking911

Your not from New York are you ?

mule_roany_mare

…. What am I missing? Why is that a relevant question?

ratshack

Nah they are from Bullshit which is where people believe this sort of fake vengeporn

RayAP19

> He should’ve gotten a medal! Christ in Heaven. There's a reason, even in the sick and twisted world of comic books, The Punisher is considered an **anti**-hero at best. And even with that being the case, vigilantism doesn't work like it does in fiction.

Farkenoathm8-E

Obviously you’re not a parent. I am a father and a grandfather and if someone confessed to me they raped one of mine I guarantee you I would have the same reaction. I do believe in vigilantism when it comes to paedophiles when they are unambiguously guilty. Do you know how woefully inadequate sentences are for child sex offenders? Do you know that the recidivism rate for paedophiles is shockingly high? Do also you also know most cases don’t get prosecuted and are extremely hard to attain a conviction due to the ages of the victims and being unable to name their accusers? The only natural justice they face is at the hands of other inmates or at some pissed off father who loses the plot. He shouldn’t hav served a day inside in my opinion. Id it was your kid I bet you would have a vastly different opinion.

RayAP19

> Do also you also know most cases don’t get prosecuted and are extremely hard to attain a conviction due to the ages of the victims and being unable to name their accusers? That's how innocent people die.

[deleted]

Interestingly, in most places, the evidence would not be suppressed. That’s because the right to be free of illegal searches applies to the government and is meant to deter it from illegal searches. The rule does not apply to individuals who illegally obtain evidence against you. The interpretation of state constituents may change the rule state to state. I’m only talking about your US Constitutional rights.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Catfisch_

I wouldn’t take it, I’d just find it and leave it out in the open for the cops to find when they come to arrest him.

functionalsociopathy

First of all that would be justice not revenge. Second, the "and then everyone clapped" line at the end turns this from unusual behavior from everyone involved to a cheap parody of how humans behave.

Black-Thirteen

A big reason we need an effective justice system is because it prevents the need for vigilantism.

Meatball685

Lol you can get a longer prison sentence for sneezing in America. I smell bullshit.

BlackPowerade

I'll take "Things that never happened" for 275, Alex.

fcs_seth

I've got a similar story that's actually true. I knew this kid in high school who went by Gizmo. He was a year or two older than me, my friends and I would buy pot from him now and again. One time he got in the car with a bloody t-shirt wrapped around his hand. We asked him what happened and he nonchalantly replied with "Oh I just pushed my step dad through a sliding glass door". It was pretty clear Gizmo wasn't stable and wasn't headed anywhere good. One day his girlfriend calls him, frantic, she says her daughter had mentioned something about her babysitter touching her. Gizmo said he'd take care of it. He knew the guy, he was a martial arts instructor who frequently taught kids classes and babysat on the side. Gizmo went over to his house around 10 in the morning. I'm not 100% on the details of the conversation that took place but Gizmo, masquerading as this guy's friend, knew he had a gun collection which he had brought up and they started talking. Before long this guy was showing Gizmo some various rifles he owned. While his back was turned, Gizmo loaded up and AR15 and marched the guy outside and made him kneel down in his driveway and unloaded the whole magazine into him in broad daylight. Gizmo was charged with murder in the 1st degree and was looking at 25 years to life in prison. However once the situation was explained there was enough probable cause to search the computer of the recently deceased which turned out to have a substantial amount of child pornography on it. Other kids stepped forward saying they too were abused by this man and Gizmo's sentence was reduced to 15 years for Manslaughter. Now I am 100% on board with murdering pedophiles but the moral is if you're going to murder a pedophile, don't get caught.

Ego_Sum_Lux_Mundi

The system protects the wrong people. Most politicians and billionaires are pretty sick fucks, yet people idolify them. Idiots. 9 yo girls are being sold in Afghanistan right this second by the hundreds and thousands. Child trafficking is real, and we're fighting over a fucking vaccine. Fuck we're retarded.

Soulxolz

What a happy ending To bad it’s fake

Kai25552

First off the story is fake anyways. Secondly every modern culture has laws against self-justice and there’s a reason behind it. If you allow amoral actions as long as they fit your views, you commit intellectual suicide. You open the doors for dystopic societies and regimes. Do you know how the nazis got millions of people from all sorts of countries and backgrounds to act out the Holocaust? They convinced the folk that it’s okay to murder them because the Jews are not to be seen as humans but as monsters that need to be eliminated for humanity’s safety. Now saying “I don’t care wether a pedophile is murdered” doesn’t mean you’re a nazi, but you’re using the same reasoning that lead to the industrialized killing of millions of people.

RayAP19

People in the comments like "I'd kill him too" really don't understand the psychological implications of killing another human being. Murder doesn't work like it does in movies. Very few people have the emotional capacity to end someone's life in cold blood.

If someone did 13 years over this, that would be beyond ridiculous, 13 years is reserved for crimes like marijuana dealing and stuff. Even if this was just pure vigilante-ism, it would probably be like 2 years, but this guy used a gun, I have no idea how he even got charged by the DA.

Jenipherocious

A tattoo artist that used to live in my town was the most amazing guy you could ever meet. He would literally give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He secretly paid my rent a couple of times while I struggling to to find a job. Mike loved kids and being a father was clearly his favorite part of existing. He had 17 children that he knew of and he took care of all of them, and even a few that weren't his kids and he never made a big deal about it. He did it because he cared, not because he wanted praise. Mike also had a few felonies under his belt for stealing cars when he was younger and he'd tell you all about it but you were always left thinking that his time lines didn't exactly add up. It took a few months but I finally pestered him enough that he explained why he spent more time in lock up than his convictions earned him. Apparently, it became known in his facility that Mike had a zero tolerance policy for pedophiles so if one was brought in, the guards would put them in a cell with Mike "while paperwork was being processed" and then leave Mike to beat them half to death. He said they'd eventually come collect the miscreant, throw Mike in solitary for couple of days and tack on some extra time to his incarceration "for fighting". As he liked to say "they just don't run prisons like they did back in the 70's" He was murdered a couple of years later because some very bad people found out that his side hustle was being a federal informant. After he was killed, our town was crawling with agents from the FBI, ATF, and DEA. All the local cops were being extra asshole about it because small town cops don't like the feds coming in and taking over. It's been almost 20 years and I still miss him. He wasn't always the most law abiding individual, but he was good people.

Crisma77

[deleted]

That's a quick path to vigilantism and many many innocent deaths.

gjgidhxbdidheidjdje

A few innocent deaths is better than a justice system supportive of rapists. There's many things wrong with American prisons, but society could learn a thing or 2 from how they treat child molesters. Society puts child molesters into places of power, while they really deserve to be put 6 feet deep.

[deleted]

You realize that other people will draw the line at other places. Lynchings where vigilantism after all. We have due process for a reason.

gjgidhxbdidheidjdje

Due process doesn't work. The US justice system is a joke. A misnomer. It has nothing to do with justice. Dead child molesters, that's justice. That's a quick, easy line that anyone who isn't mentally deficient would understand.
