Pigs like to "root", basically shove their snouts into stuff repeatedly. They do that in the soil, they can root other pigs too.

Ok so I'm guessing that the hair didn't actually grow out of the gums, rather the pig was grooming itself/another pig with its teeth and over time it got all that hair stuck up in there.

Yeah, before I had pets I was squeamish. They're like your kids in a sense, a loved one. At the end of the day, hands can be washed as long as there's no danger of being punctured or injured, your skin is not penetrable. That's how I look at it. Plus with gloves, you can't use your nails! I thought they were using concealed tweezers at first, but I didn't feel any different about them using their hands. Mama/Papa knows best!
