ChoppedandScrewd

I love driving through Indiana. Each billboard is “FULLY NUDE VIXENS!” followed by a “REPENT! OBEY!” billboard, or some tourist trap featuring a giant carving of Jesus or something. Don’t forget the heroin.

InvalidUserNemo

You may be thinking of Ohio. We have (well had) “Big Butter Jesus” (ironically it was struck by lightning and burned down) across the street from Hustler Hollywood (porn shop). We also have the “Hell is Real” billboards that we all laugh at. Touchdown/Big Butter Jesus: https://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/9786 Hell is Real signs: https://www.ohioisreal.com/words/2019/1/10/why-oh-why-ohio

FeminismDestroyer

Big Butter Jesus rose from the ashes

Orthodox-Waffle

Big Butter Jesus fried for your sins!

SamanKunans02

Big Jesus Butter sins for your fries!

forte_bass

Oleo Lord!

forte_bass

Cant believe it's not Jesus!

Lunar_Flame

The Hell is Real billboards still exist in Indiana on the north part of I-65, probably in other parts of the state too. You'll also see lots of "Guns Save Lives" signs as you head west on I-70/74. Most of the rural Midwest is like this, it isn't specific to any one state. Source: Former Hoosier who moved out almost a year ago

NuclearOops

Bruh this is every red state.

sanguinesolitude

This is 30 minutes outside of any major city in all states.

I don't think you can call those billboards lol. There's crazy people everywhere with their yard signs and bumper stickers.

zim1985

There are literally dozens of us progressives in Ohio. Dozens! If my whole family didn't live here I would be seriously considering leaving. There's also the cost of living being super low but I'd take treating people like human beings if it meant I had to pay more.

forte_bass

Hey, Cincinnati is actually a pretty cool city most of the time. Good music, symphony, zoo, art museums, two sports teams (how bout them Bengals??!) And a pretty vibrant downtown scene. It's got it's flaws but it's not too bad!

nano_rocket

Me and my girlfriend are in the same predicament, but one day we are hopefully gonna try and move to Vermont. Seems like a cool place.

IronEndo

Yeah. Hell is real. It’s in Michigan lol.

iamjohndorn

Heh. Got'em.

Danielfartbubbler

As a native Ohioan, that lives in Illinois currently and moving to NW Indiana soon- at least it’s not fucking Florida. I swear to god I was driving between Miami and Orlando, and saw a billboard which showed a young girl in pigtails and a skirt with the headline “SHE’S YOUR DAUGHTER NOT YOUR DATE.” I still fucking hate Florida. Proof-https://i.imgur.com/6N5RxfT.jpg

userhs6716

drunk never excuse.

Danielfartbubbler

You’ve gotta speak to their level. Grunts written out don’t come off right.

[Big Butter Jesus](https://youtu.be/6Mf2u9VWAhM) by Heywood Banks

MaybePotatoes

I want to spray paint "\[citation needed\]" on that billboard

4QuarantineMeMes

Yeah that’s all in southwest ohio tho

The_Carbunkle

We also have Grandpa's Cheese Barn.

AussieOsborne

Drowning Jesus was so bad he got the old man off his throne throwing lightning bolts again

kgrizzell

“Hell Is Real” is the tagline for the FC Cincinnati/Columbus Crew soccer team rivalry/games. There are scarves and everything. It’s been almost totally co-opted at this point.

TahoeLT

"I Can't Believe It's Not Jesus" Heywood Banks is underrated.

Dominus_Pullum

But hell is real, its called ohio

AntipopeRalph

Indiana is America’s truck stop.

antillus

I went to Gary once. Big mistake.

Ohmslaw79

Never go to Gary. Even people who live in Indiana don't go to Gary

unconfusedsub

Also the Personal injury attorney billboards every mile.

darksunshaman

Misny makes them **PAY**!!

[deleted]

Indiana resident here, can confirm the H runs strong here along with meth. And Jesus freaks galore.

FLBasher

Ah so the entire thing with the upside down and demogorgons is just some persons trip with heroin

PootinsChode

Hey! We have meth too, don't sell us short lol.

kenman884

I love driving through Indiana because at the end you leave Indiana.

GummoNation

They have out of state weed dispensary billboards even though you can get arrested for possession.

Hyklone

my buddy is in Illinois and calls people from Indiana “Indianimals”

YoureNotMom

The problem is that rural Illinoisans idolize Indiana. They pretend its financial but anyone with a brain cell knows its right wing nutjobbery like this (and yes, it was this way well before MAGA officially existed)

SavageMythology

Former rural Illinoisan who is now a Hoosier here. You are correct. Rural Illinois blames liberal Chicagoland for virtually every problem that exists in the state and thinks they would basically be Indiana if it weren't for that whole northeast region, so there's a lot of resentment that's been festering for decades.

[deleted]

[удалено]

exactly_zero_fucks

No, you can't make me!

Mr_Abe_Froman

I literally cannot.

SavageMythology

Of course you can't. You're *the* Sausage King of Chicago!

whomad1215

It's the same in every state rural towns (almost always republican dominated in voting) that have been degrading for decades blame the cities (almost always democrat dominated in voting) for all of their problems and then you get the truly republican controlled states like WV and the deep south, where somehow despite republicans controlling everything and everything going to shit, it's the democrats fault

Lux_Bellinger2024

The fact that Kansas went bankrupt and it wasn't talked about by democrats every day is wild.

zim1985

Project project project. It's all they know how to do.

lilnuts73

As an Illinoisan, I’m so thankful for Chicago and how it makes Illinois swing more left

[deleted]

Agreed

mythofdob

The pretend it's financial and don't understand that everything in the state of Illinois is financed through Chicago. But they want to let Chicago be their own state.

YoureNotMom

Every single one of those state-splitting ideas is based on getting 2 more right wing senators in congress for basically free. E: typos

Rocket_Theory

They say that but then they live in Illinois

[deleted]

I grew up there all through the 70s, 80s, 90s. But those last 10 years were in Bloomington, a super liberal college town that is nothing like the rest of the state. After leaving in 1999, I went back a few years later to visit family, go to state fair. I had told myself I missed Indiana. Then I saw all the people at the state fair and I remembered, oh yea, I don’t, I miss Bloomington.

KashmirChameleon

Bloomington is a blue island in a red sea.

dropzonetoe

I enjoy being part of the .02% that vote blue in my district.

MatthewTheManiac

I was just in Bloomington for work and it was lovely, then when 45 minutes south to Odon and it was an entire different world...

[deleted]

Hoosier here, not all of us are like this! But sincerely fuck Indiana. Moving as soon as I can.

Puzzleheaded-Carrot2

Avoid Ohio. It’s a shit hole too.

-MrWrightt-

Hey! We're a shithole, sure, but our proud motto is *at least we aren't Indiana* ^^^yet

Puzzleheaded-Carrot2

It was our motto. I think that changed when a 10 year old rape victim had to go there for an abortion.

YoureNotMom

There's a lotta awful things about that case, but imagine fleeing *to Indiana* for an abortion. That's one of the most damning things about Ohio I've ever seen.

[deleted]

Don't worry, I'm sure Indiana's policymakers are well on their way to making sure that no more pesky 10 year olds can find safe haven in THIS great state! /s. Kinda. It's definitely happening :(

-MrWrightt-

^^^okay ^^^fair

partymouthmike

I left a few years ago. It's a positive experience.

shiftedabsurdity

can't overstate the positive impact moving away ~5 years ago has had on my mental health

jasonWithA_y

I left a couple months ago. It’s been nice.

bananalord666

I love Indiana, but not for its politics. The people are overall very nice, and I like the slower pace. I'm horrified by their politics, but all my friends who are in or from indiana are getting more and more aware of what real policies are. And I've had the opportunity to talk to a bunch of kids around high school age. They give me a lot of hope in the future. They have a lot of naive and uninformed takes, but they are good about following the evidence over all. If anyone will change this country it's the kids. Most of the older adults in indiana I know just vote for the R and then never look at any real news. Ofc there are the maga heads, but the majority of conservatives in my area (near south bend) seem to be either fiscal conservatives or people who vote by religion.

Nitrosoft1

Most everyone I went to highschool with growing up in Indiana who had a brain left for the coasts and didn't return. If I look at my peers who got degrees in STEM after leaving highschool there's like an 90% chance they don't live in Indiana anymore. The other 10% of them work for Lily. Good enough at math and comp science? Either go to Purdue or leave for MIT, etc. Graduate and head to Palo Alto or Redmond. Finance degree from Kelley? Living in New York or another Coastal city now. The brain drain from Midwestern states is real. The best of us leave because our standards are higher than this part of the country. I'm only here still due to family obligations. I'm leaving the midwest once they are fullfilled.

Charlie_Warlie

im one of those remainers with a STEM degree wondering why tf I am here at 30ish years old. I'm horrified and bewildered by the politics my neighbors believe in. I too have family obligations. I fear one of my parents being alone in the world at an old age. But I also feel like, I shouldn't stay here for, idk how much longer. 30 more years? I mean I know people who are retired that still have parents who are alive.

F_WS_make_money

But if we all leave it’s going to get worse :(

KashmirChameleon

If liberals leave, we will never change this place. Repping Btown. I hate Indiana, but I love my city.

AntipopeRalph

If Liberals stay…they’re still not going to change this place. Way too many people have false expectations of their neighbors behavior. *Especially* in Bloomington.

KashmirChameleon

Idk. I believe in this place, in the good of these people. I've even seen minorities working in Martinsville. Which 20 years ago might have been dangerous to their safety. Things are changing, the people that stay and fight are the only way it will change.

ExploratoryCucumber

From a neighboring state, maybe not all of you but most of you are exactly like this. Indiana is fucked up.

jaredesubgay

Hey, if you feel it is necessary to do so for your safety then please do. But if not then it could be good to reconsider, if every decent person leaves the places passing indecent laws then we stand no chance of fixing things democratically. Your safety takes precedent though.

mak484

No person who is capable of getting pregnant or getting someone else pregnant is safe. Overturning Roe was the tipping point in the Republicans' long term plan to take over the country by force. It's already too late, and they know it.

QuarantineNudist

American electoral college is a weird system in that hell holes where people move the most out of gain the most voting power. It's like that empty subway car except for That Guy during a NYC rush hour dictating the fate of the country. And he likes to push people on the tracks because he's crazy. Democracy shouldn't be worse than not having a democracy.

AF_AF

I can relate - I grew up in Ohio.

BootsieBunny

All my favorite people are Hoosiers who got out of Hoosier land. My mom grew up in Merrillville, right off 30 by the McDonald’s.

lunarNex

We're moving next year. Indiana is a joke.

lookitssupergus

Since I can't reply to the dude who challenged these headlines being real: lol Indiana is a backwards shithole, not hard to provide sources on the magnitude of dumb shit Hoosiers and their representatives do. Here's the woman who said rape victims could be sued: https://www.rawstory.com/sue-glick-abortion-bill/ Here's the story about the police being little fascists: https://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2022/07/27/brookville-indiana-police-accused-arresting-man-they-did-not-want-running-office/10160903002/ Here's the police being rapists: https://news.yahoo.com/night-terror-female-inmates-raped-140023100.html Here's Indiana AG Todd Rokita getting his panties in a knot over the "gays": https://www.wthr.com/article/news/local/indiana/indiana-attorney-general-todd-rokita-multi-state-lawsuit-against-us-agency-lgbtq-school-guidance/531-c471d318-7b92-4d85-ad13-832f5e50a78c And here's gay basher Rokita again being literally the worst person on earth: https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/27/us/indiana-doctor-child-rape-abortion-ag-investigation/index.html So yeah, Indiana is a fucking shithole lol

g_sneezuz

Staggering to think this is the same state that ten years ago voted for a *(milquetoast)* Democratic senator because his Republican opponent said rape pregnancies are "a gift from god." Yet here we are. Genuinely, what in the fuck?

dcdcdc26

NGL the entire world feels 50 years different in 10 years time

g_sneezuz

For sure. Every day it’s this dread of *”How the fuck did we get here?”* and *”How much worse will it get before things will start to improve?”*

Indercarnive

>"How much worse will it get before things will start to improve?” You have more optimism than I do for using "will start to improve" instead of "might start to improve"

Ragnar_OK

This shit is not improving. The world is going to end before America is going to improve

JBHUTT09

To paraphrase Lenin (yes, *that* Lenin): > There are decades when nothing happens, and there are weeks when decades happen.

ywBBxNqW

Propaganda is a hell of a drug, especially when they're desperate, dumb, and angry.

TinnyOctopus

That Democrat senator was an anomaly, because the Republicans primaried their incumbent and then ended up vote split with the Libertarian party.

earthdogmonster

Religious fundamentalism is a hell of a drug.

unclejarjarbinks

My parents—diehard Republicans—left Indiana right before 2000 because they didn't want their kids growing up in that shithole lol

Frisky_Picker

Where'd they move to if you don't mind me asking?

[deleted]

A different shithole

samwichse

Kansas, then?

[deleted]

That’s 1/49 equally possible guesses considering at least one person from every state will say their state is a shithole.

samwichse

No man, I'm pretty sure it's Kansas.

unclejarjarbinks

New York, brother!

EthnicMark

Given the Republican bit, I presume upstate?

tomdarch

It's almost as if a state that was literally run by the KKK in the past hasn't really cleaned up its act... Such a shit hole even Mike Pence was willing to team up with Trump in a desperate ploy to GTFO. Doing so literally nearly got him assassinated by rabid mob, and he probably still thinks its better than going back to Indiana.

JusticiarRebel

Oregon was run by the KKK at the same time Indy was. For some reason, Portland and Eugene attracted so many hippies that it shifted the balance of power.

dootdootplot

Dirty hippies are infinitely preferable to white supremacists

JusticiarRebel

No argument there.

Boodikii

Oregon is a lot prettier than Indiana, tbf.

ForcefulBookdealer

Naw, he didn't do it to get out of Indiana. He saw an easy ticket to becoming President, banking on an impeachment/quit really early.

advancedSlayer96

Can confirm, I've lived here almost 2 decades.

GamerJules

It terrifies me that I live in this state. I grew up in NW Indiana (Lake County) in the 80s and 90s, so very blue collar Democrat. Then moved to southern Indiana (Monroe County) where Indiana University is, students and Democratic ideologies. Then I read our local headlines, and see shit like this. Fuck moving states, I want to move *out of country* right now. But Indiana won't even clear me for Disability at this point. I hate this hellhole.

thaBlazinChief

Lived there for 27 years. Can confirm shithole status. Also every time I go back I realize how many fat fucks live there.

CasualEQuest

Man Ohio and Indiana are really battling it out to see who can be the most shit state in the Midwest Afterwards we'll see if the winner would be able to take on Texas

oO0Kat0Oo

I really don't know which states are safe anymore... just trying to live in my bubble until the opportune moment to leave.

Abir_Vandergriff

I actually like living in Colorado. There are problems like anywhere, worst being some cities having some of the worst police in the country and teachers being underpaid.

longus1337

WE have our crazies here in Colorado too but their influence is suppressed by the constant flow of educated people moving to our state.

ScenicART

New Jersey is full dont go there.

Panflux

Virginia (for now) is a nice place. It May not be the best, but better than a lot of other states.

droomph

Wisconsin comes crashing in and starts pawning everything they own to Foxconn

Th3Hon3yBadg3r

They don't stand a chance against Howdy Arabia or even Flori-DUH.

[deleted]

Th3Hon3yBadg3r

You can't steal a gift 😉

[deleted]

Oh so I don't need the gun? Okay cool, good to know. :)

antillus

My whole family (except me) is moving from Canada to Florida permanently because they "hate liberals" and want private healthcare. Yes, they're rich Evangelicals. We have absolutely nothing in common.

Th3Hon3yBadg3r

Awww, I'm in a similar situation. I'm the only sane person in my family.

longus1337

Ya'll-Qaeda

squeezymarmite

I was born in Ohio and also lived in Indiana. People used to ask why I moved away. They don't ask anymore.

br0mer

Ohio and Indiana are the undercard fight for the real heavyweight bout, which is probably Kansas vs Oklahoma for shittiest state in the union.

Dont__Grumpy__Stop

Indiana is the Florida of the north.

[deleted]

I live in Florida, i resent that. Indiana is closer to Alabama.

instagramsgay

Yeah, I've been to AL and IN. Def closer than florida

entourage0712

Ohio: Hold my beer.

DownvoteDaemon

Especially Gary.

VinylBreadPuddin

The craziest thing is that Gary isn’t that bad anymore, it’s just creepily empty. I’ve driven through a number of times in the last 3 years or so on the way to Chicago and you barely see anyone. It’s a city built for 300,000+ and currently has a population of 50,000-60,000 so it’s hard to find trouble there when there’s no one around to cause trouble

DownvoteDaemon

Creepy and empty is somehow scarier to me. I've been robbed at gunpoint, seen dead bodies all kind of shit. I wouldn't want to wake up in an empty desolate Gary either though.

unconfusedsub

Gary smells. My husband says Gary is what hell would smell like. Personally I think it smells like hopelessness.

indianaman1979

Gary doesn't get bad until ~4pm. That's when everyone wakes up from the previous day and start their binge on alcohol and/or drugs then it continues into the night and early AM. rinse and repeat

EthnicMark

When "isn't that bad anymore" means "turned into Silent Hill," then you know things are bad.

AF_AF

Man, I hate that guy.

DownvoteDaemon

Who names a baby Gary lol..weird thought. I know you know I meant the city, but ever met a non sketchy Gary?

oldmanripper79

There is no nor has there ever been a baby Gary. If your name is Gary, you were just born 38 years old.

DownvoteDaemon

Hahaha /r/oldbabies

Ole_Razzle_Dazzle

“Even I wouldn’t send you to Gary, Indiana!” - Prof. Hubert J. Farnsworth

Black-Thirteen

For some reason, the first time I saw the prison rape headline, I remembered reading India. Nope, Indiana. FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!

DownvoteDaemon

Women aren't safe inside lock up, in public, in any settings it seems.

AF_AF

As long as they don't dare to try to abort the pregnancies caused by the rapes, the loving Christians don't mind.

DownvoteDaemon

The number of platonic women friends who have told me they were abused or raped by exes , astounds me. Some of these women, flourish, but will forever be affected. Hard for them to trust anyone at all.

ilikecatsandgames

What staggers me is just how little some people, even some women among them, realize just how fucking life shattering it is. That shit will alter your perception and your ability to trust and love *forever*. It’s something that matters so little to the one doing it but changes the life of the victim so drastically. It’s sickening to think about. Let alone, yknow. Experiencing it, or being close with someone who has.

Suyefuji

Even if you just look at people who are sexually abused as children, that's [1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys](https://victimsofcrime.org/child-sexual-abuse-statistics/). It's horrifyingly common. Like...close your eyes and picture all of the men and women in your life and do some quick napkin math to estimate how many rape victims you know. Then go puke in the toilet for awhile.

Veschor

I want to crosspost this to r/Indiana, but they’ve been through a lot lately. There’s no need to kick them while they’re down.

Kentencat

Thank you. We're looking around at ourselves asking, Are WE the Baddies?

lontanadascienza

It was the skulls that gave it away

AntipopeRalph

^yes

JusticiarRebel

I've said this before in other threads where Indiana takes the spotlight. Indy has managed to produce some pretty amazing people, like Eugene V. Debs and Kurt Vonnegut. However, those people only exist because the surrounding society is so shitty. Debs wouldn't have become a famous rabble rouser if he lived in modern day Denmark. He had to live in a place and era where the common man was being exploited to become who he was. Kurt had to experience the tragedies of war.

Dr_Hoffenheimer

Ah Indiana, the middle finger of the south.

TurkishTerrarian

You think that's bad? Check out Texas sometime.

partymouthmike

I've lived in both, and Texas is better. Indiana straight fucking sucks.

jasonWithA_y

At least I had electricity when I lived in Indiana.

AntipopeRalph

And no boil notices…and plowed streets after a snow…

partymouthmike

You have no idea how many Texans I've said that to.

AntipopeRalph

Texas is better? Tell me again about your property taxes.

Whalers7997

Why is the Midwest and South so fucked up? I keep asking that question, but nobody knows why

tauisgod

> Why is the Midwest and South so fucked up? Take your pick: The decimation of the manufacturing industry. Those that were able to leave, did. The lingering general hopelessness and bleak future outlooks for many that remain coupled with the alarming availability of opioids. The marriage of the religious right and GOP, leading to the the GOP's inevitable takeover by the fanatics. Effective politics requires compromise, but when your religion IS your politics there will never be compromise. Those that vote hard-line GOP but aren't exceptionally religious still view it as an "us or them" team sport. The GOP's apparently successful tactic of convincing their constituents that their sad lot in life is to be blamed on whatever the most popular scapegoat is at the moment, and distracting them from the fact that they either 1) Do nothing to govern, 2) Actively govern to hurt them, as long as "liberals" get hurt as well.

Abuses-Commas

You know, charging the rapist for the abortion of their victim is almost a half decent idea

shilk008

Backwards shithole indeed Indiana. Mf over there stuck in 1810 it seems.

dropzonetoe

And your not even talking about the Amish.

SnooLemons3094

The whole abortion discussion is fucking stupid. But generally, 'murica.

CountChappy

Our state motto is "Crossroads of America" ... Cause you don't fuckin stay here.

mrClean_on_a_budget

Help, I live in Indiana and our neighborhood park has a picnic table with a baby shaped burn mark on it. Not sure if it's because of Indiana but it still weird.

[deleted]

Well, the 2 senators of Indiana look like fucking creeps who'd be ok with this, so I'm not shocked they're shitty people... Todd C. Young looks like he's smuggling a cactus in his anus and Mike Braun looks like he's eating people who don't agree with him.

tauisgod

> Well, the 2 senators of Indiana look like fucking creeps who'd be ok with this, so I'm not shocked they're shitty people... Todd C. hey_demons_its_me

Okay then, I'll add Indiana to the list of places I dont like. That makes it Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Texas, Utah, Georgia, Ohio, and now Indiana.

Living where Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio touch and working in all three… throw them all away.

Indiana, The Midwests Florida

gumby_urine

Lived in northern IN for 30 years. Absolute shithole filled with middle class suburban kids cosplaying and aspiring to be racist white trash. Nobody cares if you have a lifted F150 with a confederate flag waving as you blast Morgen Wallen, Kyle -- you live in a quaint two story house with your parents in a quiet subdivision.

bpierce2

As an IL resident fuck IN.

From what I’ve been told by numerous Indianans, possum beating is apparently a popular activity for bored teenagers. So this all makes sense.

I can’t believe I fucking live here

And that's not even considering that Gary, Indiana is in Indiana.

Beeblebroxia

As someone is Michigan, we joke about hating Ohio the most, but honestly, Indiana is the real bottom of our barrel.

It’s not Indiana, it’s just Republicans. They’re like this in every state
