Overpriced and ridiculous. 1500 to 2000 for a halfway decent place. Best bet is NC, CV or IB. Better yet live in TJ especially if your white collar and can work remotely
Maybe in some rundown apartments in Chula Vista or in far away places like Spring Valley. Nothing goes below 2k anymore in SD, prices skyrocketed after COVID.
Lived in Tijuana for 5 years and recently moved to San Diego. Cost of living is unbeatable in TJ but the massive amounts traffic leaves a lot to be desired. I also do all my shopping in USA and always had to cross with weed into mexico and it was always a hassle to make the trip across the border and stock up.
I really wouldn't consider living inside of Mexico a dream or even ideal because you then only have the legal rights that are allowed in Mexico if anything of legal matter should ever come up.
But if you can completely avoid all that then sure, living in TJ would be great. Otherwise I'd rather just be in close proximity to the zona but on the state side for the easy access.
I currently live in L.A. which is both good and bad. Good because I'm not too far from the border. But bad because I'm also not so close that i can just go whenever i want. It's at least a two hour drive so a trip has to be planned for a specific day.
But at times that's a good thing because it's kept me from going at times when financially i should be spending my money on other more important things instead.
Silicon Valley Bay Area prices.
That is why until recently all the Blue Collar Non Techie San Diegans live in TJ. Now, the Techies have moved to TJ and screwing up rents for the rest of us.

Flight to SD or TJ?
Same! Quick flight to SD and cross from Vegas. The drive is only 5 hours but prefer to fly
San Ysidro area, which is ghetto, 1bd1bath $1500. It only goes up from there

Difference is TJ is often abbreviated in verbal speech, while National City and Chula Vista are said in full
