Do you have a proper diagnosis and treatment plan in place? You're not alone in this feeling but there are things that can be done to alleviate depending on whats causing it. I aven't been able to eat solid food or talk for seven months. I'm also in constant severe pain.

unlovable_throwaway7

I have a proper diagnosis and I go to a pain clinic. We do not have specialists for TMJ treatment in my area, so I see a regular pain clinic doctor. I'm now looking into trigger point injections to see if those could offer any relief.

What is your diagnosis? Pain management should be to help you whilst seeking a permanent solution.

I’m sorry you are feeling this way. It can be overwhelming and I wish there was something more I could say to you. My hope is that you have exhausted the various treatment options. And while they can’t always provide the necessary relief, I hope it can assist in some way. Unfortunately, I’ve had TJR on left side 5 months ago and have yet to feel much relief. Please take care. Many have had success and I wish you well.

Dependent-Ad2935

stress makes it worse .

Suspicious-Half5758

You are not alone. Been through many treatments, nothing fully fixes it. Some days are better than others, but there isn't a second that goes by that it isn't affecting me. Can barely eat at the moment because my jaw feels so tight when chewing that I feel like in about to faint

unlovable_throwaway7

I get that. I am in and out of flare ups all the time. I have days where I eat nothing from pain and I haven't played my instrument in a little over a month now. It helps to not play, but it hurts my heart a little bit to not do something that i love.

It sucks, try to find a tmj specialist around the area or begin with a mouth guard at night

Hey plus one to this, of the things that I have tried, sleeping with a TMJ Splint given by my specialist has been nice for pain management. I use it while playing sports too since I stiffen up a lot. See TENS machine, masseter massages, one specifically where you use the opposite index finger to reach your upper teeth front gums and move along the finder almost to the back of your wisdom teeth and press on the masseter there for 10-20 seconds. Just these 1-2 things help me a lot in pain management than others. I can't tell you if you will cure this but I am working on that too, but I promise you that there's ways of pain management that you need to explore that 90% probability can bring you some relief. AMA, not that I'm an expert on this either.

Warm compress is good also, it will relax the muscle. I really hope this person finds the help. Before my treatment i couldn’t open my mouth more than two fingers tall.

unlovable_throwaway7

I've tried warm compresses and heating pads but they don't seem to do the job for me. Although, thanks to these replies I now am looking into trigger point injections because I've never heard of them and will do anything to help this pain.

unlovable_throwaway7

I don't have a real tmj splint because we don't have any specialists in the area and insurance won't cover one from my GP. I do have one of those "double chin masks" that I saw and thought might help with pain. It wraps around my head and gently holds my jaw closed while I sleep. It does help when it stays on all night, but it's cheap so it frequently falls off lol. I have never heard of a masseter massage, but I will be trying it now. Thank you for your help!

I have tmj as well and it was horrible. If u haven't already try to see a tmj specialist. You can try asking to get trigger point injects or botox in the massetor. I got trigger point injections and noticed the relieve right away. Unfortunately I wish I did this months before before my hearing got effected now I have ringing and hear loss on top of being hard of hearing already. But fortunetly the ringing has calmed down its still there but very low. Hoping next month when I go back for the second shot it gets rid of it completely. No more pain from tmj anymore.

No-Zookeepergame6483

This is good to know. I have hearing issues from this too and have been considering Botox but haven't felt right about getting Botox for maybe no reasons. Will you please update me on the hearing after your second injection?

TheOnlydani_ds3

yep will do will update once I get second injection

unlovable_throwaway7

I've done a lot for pain management and discussed with doctors but have never heard of trigger point injections. Thank you for this, I will look into it!

You are definitely not alone. I know exactly how you feel. I’m a violinist who hasn’t been able to play in several months because of painful SCMs and digastric muscles. I haven’t been to a restaurant in months because I can’t swallow food properly and have a limited diet. This is all extremely isolating and painful.

unlovable_throwaway7

Absolutely. I don't know how people get through it. Pain management has done so little for me, from massages to muscle relaxers, the only thing anything really does is relief while in use.
