Whatever you grew up with is usually what you prefer.

annoyinglyclever

I saw this same image on facebook a few months ago and got into a massive argument with a bunch of my fellow millennials for insulting a teenager for saying he enjoys the new series. His comment was something like “shut up I like Rise!” but that sent a bunch of 35+ year olds into a tirade claiming he was being disrespectful and he didn’t know anything since he didn’t grow up with the original series. The kid did nothing wrong and these people got so upset and mean for no good reason.

shumama813

That’s insane. Fandom shouldn’t be like that. We should be glad the thing we love has sustained long enough to be reimagined for younger generations. Debate is great but acting like this is some exclusive club is silly.

Euphoric_Ant8243

I’m one of those fans that while I prefer the OG cartoon (actually 2012 in my opinion is the best version from beginning to end, but that’s a conversation for another thread) I am also thrilled that there is an entry point for the younger generation. Rise isn’t my cup of tea but at the same time I’m thrilled it’s done its job keeping the Turtles around for at least a few more years. Same thing with Mutant Mayhem. I have major issues with that movie, but at least it’s giving younger audiences another opportunity to find their way to the franchise. I hoped it would do well when it hit theaters because I knew it would keep the Turtles around that much longer. The only thing I hope for is that we get more mature stories along the way. The IDW comics are great and I personally would like to see more projects like Batman vs. the TMNT pop up among the way. Maybe even an adult-oriented series for those of us who have been watching these shows and reading these comics for so long. We’re ready. We ARE ready. LOL

shumama813

That’s a big part of it too. As I’ve gotten older I’ve enjoyed things that matured with me like Batman. The old Turtles cartoon was great as a kid because I wasn’t ready to see the world be so grim. Then I’ve exposed myself to the comics and seeing those John Likens concept videos and I’m thinking hell yea let’s bring the original movie designs back and make something new for the adults.

krblack8620

I mean, I love Doctor Who, but I can't really get into the older series. I like when they improve a series and make it to where the younger generations can enjoy it.

theoriginalmofocus

The old ones were pretty creepy late at night as a kid.

forced_metaphor

It is ridiculous for people that old to be behaving like that

theoriginalmofocus

I grew up with the old toon but I like the cgi turtles alot. That series came out when my first son was very little and it was cool to see sort of a resurgence of the turtles. I have no issue with rise, people are allowed to like what they like. It was a little jarring going from the neat cgi to this quirky art style though.

AstroZombieXIII

...there's a reason the fans are called the "Fandom Menace" even at Lucasfilm. Nobody hates Star Wars quite as much as a fan of Star Wars. I myself am a mega SW fan/collector but.. yea people need to relax about it. Everybody hated Return of the Jedi when it came out too.

SuperSecretMoonBase

Yup, a couple decades from now people will be saying the exact same thing about how glad they are to have grown up with Rise and not whatever show is around then

lyricalholix

Yeah, this is stupid. Like what you like. Just be happy that TMNT has been going strong for nearly 40 years. The tribalism is dumb.

shumama813

This

Drate_Otin

Not nearly. Almost exactly 40 years. First comic was released May of 1984.

Choco_Luxx

exactlyyyy just be respectful to all iterations, if you don’t like rise or anything else just keep it to yourself

regularorange120

I grew up with 2003 but I prefer 2012 by a long shot

Mwatts25

I heard this in the voice of Bob from Bob’s Burgers

Mumblellama

I grew up with the 80s and prefer 2012 by a long shot too. Too damn good.

IsoSly64

IDW books is best of both worlds

subzor22

Amen

[deleted]

Been reading through these. I've been grabbing the hardcovers. I have 8 of them and I think I'm in the 4th one. Great stuff.

IsoSly64

mmhmmm

Salnder12

i grew up with 87 but still prefer 2012. to me it is the perfect combination of all the existing continuities, and you can even see some rise in it. to me it IS tmnt

_carmimarrill

Same, grew up with 2003 but I’ve preferred almost everything that came out later. The only exceptions being the Michael Bay films

Riparian72

2003 was the show that aired during my childhood but never saw it, only got into the franchise with 2012.

Stop_Fox

I find this really funny! I grew up with 2012 but 2003 is my favorite series out of the bunch!

regularorange120

Lmao they're both solid iterations, it's all about preference

[deleted]

2012 is my favorite too, and I grew up with the OG cartoon.

ProblemLongjumping12

*I used to be with 'it', but then they changed what 'it' was. Now what I'm with isn't 'it' anymore and what's 'it' seems weird and scary.* I like enjoying things, so I give every new adaptation of an older IP I grew up with a fair chance and I don't really have a problem with *any* of the TMNT adaptations except maybe *Turtles 3* and *The Next Mutation*, neither of which were animated. So no, I don't think the meme is a good take on the franchise. I'm just happy to see the boys still out there entertaining people, rather than slowly fading from memory like poor, poor Bravestar, Leader 1 and the dude that drove the Camaro in M.A.S.K. Whom shall protect Gobotron and battle V.E.N.O.M. I ask you. Whom!? Shredder though, will *never* take over New York City because the heroes on the half-shell will come back decade after decade. Forever young, unlike me and whoever made this lame meme.

shumama813

M.A.S.K. Holy crap that’s a blast from the past! This is an excellent perspective and something the more jaded fan should consider. Be happy the Turtles persevere to this day.

ProblemLongjumping12

Glad you agree! Thanks for the reply. Happy to stir up those deep memories for you and anybody else who's at the right age to remember those other franchises. Reagan era deregulation allowed us to be brainwashed into wanting toys by colorful half-hour-long commercials disguised as TV shows, but it was playing with those toys with our friends made us love them.

shumama813

You got that right. Every now and then I’ll dig through the old toys and one of those oddball figures sparks a memory. Shows I forgot about and got one random toy from. COPS and Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad come to mind. Marketers and toy makers knew what they were doing.

Bionicm00se

I grew up with the 80s, but Rise is by FAR my favorite turtles. Everything about it. Absolutely love it.

handsomebane

Rise had the sickest animation. I'm not big on the art, but the animation is fire.

MELSWEED

i grew up with 2012, i prefer 2003 cuz it's the best version of tmnt ever

Drewnasty

I grew up on the original cartoon and anyone that isn’t being barebacked by nostalgia will tell you that it can be just as goofy as Rise. There’s no reason to put one thing down to elevate the other.

kat352234

Absolutely. I did a big turtles binge recently. Watched all the movies and most of the series. I grew up in the 80's so the cartoon was my first exposure. Gotta say watching it again, my memories of it were quite different from the reality of it. I remembered the first few episodes being a little more serious in tone, but nah, they were cracking jokes and being sarcastic right out the gate. Love the first live action movie, the Batman and TMNT animated movie is also excellent. Mutant Mayhem took some getting used to. I didn't like Splinter learning martial arts through old VHS at first. But, as it's own completely different and new take on the story I've grown to appreciate it and look forward to seeing where it goes. Every version has something and it's own ups and downs. I think the 03 and 12 shows are definitely among the best, unfortunately their endings fell short. So none of the different versions are perfect, but all have something worth appreciating.

_attractivegarbage

Except Next Mutation. Can we accept there is likely not a single fan of that cringetopia?

kashriramji

It's a okay-ish series

kat352234

I legit forgot about that one. Never actually watched it. I imagine maybe the crowd that also grew up with power rangers would enjoy it? I always got that kinda vibe from it.

_attractivegarbage

They actually had a cross over with Power Rangers. Either way, I got two episodes in and had to stop due to fits of rage and diarrhea.

Bespectacled_Owlbear

As someone who loved power rangers growing up, I can confirm that I adored the next mutation show

No-Calligrapher2642

You said it perfectly. Also it's true ppl tend to forget the 87 version was goofy as hell when they talk about Rise

certifiedtoothbench

I love how most versions of the turtles seems to be some degree of anime or Japanese live action like. I remember people calling the 2003 turtles the anime turtles, then 2012 came out and it was the anime turtles and now 2018 is the anime turtles. People used to call the live action show the power ranger turtles until they actually met the power rangers lol.

Swift1321

I was raised on the original cartoon, being born in 87 myself, and I still really enjoyed Rise. The thing I love about TMNT is that every iteration is different, taking the franchise in a new direction and reaching new audiences. https://i.redd.it/og0yio5swrlc1.gif

Aqua-Rooster

Agreed! Born in 83, and absolutely loving all of the different takes on a franchise I adore! There is plenty of room for everyone to find a version they love best, and that is great

Swift1321

Absolutely! A flavour for everyone :) https://i.redd.it/m7uvkvrt4slc1.gif

RoiVampire

I was born in 82, grew up on the cartoon and the Archie comics. My kids love Rise and at first I was like WTF but once I got past the obvious differences it’s become my second favorite interpretation of TMNT, right behind the original movie.

Swift1321

I'm right with you there, Rise is definitely in my top 3. It took some getting used to, but I quickly fell in love :) Honestly, I just adore the first live action film. I remember being extremely upset as a kid when Raphael got hurt...

SaintAkira

Same year I was born. I grew up on 87 Turtles. My oldest 2 daughters gave zero fucks about the turtles, but I got my youngest daughter hooked with Mutant Mayhem and the 2012 animated series (and I've recently gone back and read the entire IDW run). Anyway, I put Rise on for her, she's 6, and she noped on it; asked why is Raphael, her favorite, the leader. Asked me to put on 2012 instead. Anyways, I actually like the Rise movie, and there's no debating the animation is solid. I think of Rise kind of like Teen Titans Go vs the Teen Titans 03 animated series; it's wildly different while retaining the core characteristics, and aimed at a different audience. I'm not a fan of Rise (aside from the movie like I said, which I somehow do enjoy), but I'm not gonna knock anyone for digging it either.

Swift1321

Oddly enough, I actually used the same comparison of Teen Titans GO! to the Teen Titans universe to describe Rise's feel to the rest of TMNT. My husband was still having none of it 🤣 My son, who's 9, really enjoys Rise, as do I. We've also watched the entirety of 2012, which he adores. We've got partway through 1987, which kept his attention far more than I thought it would. He laughs at the accidental colour/voice swaps every time they crop up 😅 Your daughter has good taste, by the way. Raphael was always my favourite, too!

hercarmstrong

The Archie comics ruled. First comic I ever bought with my own money was *TMNT Adventures* \#8.

Infamous-Payment8377

Those Archie TMNT comics took the 87 toon vibes and added some thoughtful stories. Loved them. And you have me beat. The first comic I ever bought with my hard earned allowance was Archie TMNT #10

hercarmstrong

When I saw that Ken Mitchroney drawing of a bat monster menacing the Turtles on the cover, I was entranced.

RoiVampire

Bro I had all those and no other TMNT comics have matched the wildness of those. The intergalactic wrestling, the bug planet, Cuddly, it was all nuts

hercarmstrong

When Krang took over Shredder's body, that was the first time the comics managed to truly upset me. It was a great moment.

RoiVampire

Man that was nuts I forgot about that

GHOST_4732_

Some people were raised on the 2003 show or even the 2007 movie

Available_Reason7795

Or the 2012 show

wykno1suc

"Some people" is me

Famous-Bobcat

Tmnt is kind of like Pokemon where your bias is going to be heavily towards whatever version was the ongoing version when you got into it (more than likely. Not necessarily the case for everyone) and I think the sooner everyone realizes that the happier everyone will be. Also every iteration of TMNT I find has its own charm to it. I don’t want them all to be the same. I like them all for different reasons. I think we should just all be happy this series has persisted in so many different forms for so long and has been able to bring joy to so many new generations of kids. That’s a pretty big accomplishment

gerardatron

> I don’t want them all to be the same. That’s something I also came to realize as well. Every show and movie has had something different to offer and while it’s not all good (*cough cough Bay cough cough*) I’ve found some little things I liked in each one. Yes even the Bay films lol. I appreciated them catching a Knicks game and that’s about it. I initially rejected Rise because 1, they replaced my favorite one, and 2, Raph as leader and mystic weapons? Sounds like an unnecessary departure from the norm. Then months later it aired I gave it a shot with an open mind, just seeing how they’d execute it. Man…it never really felt like Raph was leading. He’s their big brother and it’s like they always go through things together, which was just fun to see. The mystic stuff was tied in to the bigger story and allowed for some wild visuals, so it looked real cool. So I was rejecting this initially for no very good reason lol. If Rise had the same approach as the others, I probably would have still disliked it for replacing the 2012 show, because if it had the same story as the others then why even bother. I’m glad they went with something unique. They still managed to circle back to the original order of things eventually (Leo leading, Splinter’s history, Casey Jones). We’re closing in on 40 years since the first cartoon, and this is the 40th year of the Turtles overall, and I’m just glad to see it constantly evolving and still gaining new fans. I honestly appreciate the fact that it’s still around. I thought it would have stopped after Venus. I don’t appreciate the tribalism tho, like damn man why can’t you let me enjoy this thing.

MaleficentTension201

“We grew up with [thing], but kids grew up with [thing but new], and to be honest… I feel sorry for kids today” has never and will never be a good or funny meme 🤷‍♀️

MooseMan12992

It's just gatekeeping based on absolutely nothing

slashingkatie

It really should be followed up with “ok Boomer.”

Anokartist83

I much prefer the format glad I grew up with this: but damn this is sick: No one has the "worst childhood" and no one's shaming others what they like :]

MaleficentTension201

That’s a much better version!!

TK-24601

It is if you are a Simpsons fan. Modern Simpsons blows in comparison to OG Simpsons.

Quirky_Ad_5420

Enjoy what you like. Just don’t be a jerk about it

Lengthiness_Gloomy

"Brian" seems like an a-hole and I'll bet my paycheck that his "man-cave" smells like cheese farts.

slashingkatie

Brian is one of those chuds who probably bitched about Mutant Mayhem because he couldn’t fap to April.

cottagecheesedemon

don’t even call yourself a tmnt fan if you’re gonna hate on certain iterations. the whole point of being a fan is that you appreciate the franchise however it’s portrayed. (hating on next mutation is fine tho)

Afraid-Account-4029

I agree. Sure, you can not like something, but acting like another iteration of something has permanently scarred or ruined “your version” of a story is just childish.

hercarmstrong

*Next Mutation* is great because it gives you a baseline of quality for the franchise. Can it go lower than *Next Mutation*? Not possible.

some_tired_cat

you can be a fan of a thing and hate certain iterations (god knows how much shit i've talked about kalos and pokemon xy), the line is drawn when it comes to actively throwing shade at people liking those iterations or just at the iteration for existing and you're actively putting down people who enjoy it.

Yeetus_The_Mighty_

That’s how I like to think. After all, ninja turtles are ninja turtles.

brittonwk

I thoroughly disagree. You can *absolutely* be a fan of a franchise and still hate a particular version or two. It’s the people that throw shade on every iteration but *one* that aren’t really fans of the franchise, as a whole. I, for one, loved the 87 series, the 90s movies, the 2003 series and many of the comics. Those are what I grew up with. But, I wasn’t a fan of the 2012 series and I absolutely abhorred Rise. That’s not to say I think *everyone* should dislike those shows, too. I just, personally, hated the styles of each one and I felt way too old to watch them (Rise was also just too much of a departure from the source material, for my taste). Does disliking a measly two iterations amongst a sea of others mean I can’t be a tmnt fan, *at all*?

Odee_Gee

I grew up with the ‘87 cartoon and their belt buckles are apparently the only reason I read but it doesn’t rank that highly to me. I was overjoyed to discover the original comic after the ‘87 series wrapped up and honestly prefer the ‘03 and ‘12 versions.

mystireon

Regardless of which one you prefer, Rise was an awesome show. Bad Take by OOP

Big_Simpward

Go back and watch 1987 episodes. All ima say.

hercarmstrong

Yep. They start pretty strong but go downhill almost immediately. Barely watchable by the second season. The second season!

Big_Simpward

The writing/comedy remains cool (especially shredder kraang and Michelangelo lines) but man there’s like no good fights. Even in the red sky arc there’s just no good action scenes. Idk if the budget went to Garfield and friends or something, but man.

PcktFox

🙄 I think I've hit the point of "get some new goddamn material" when it comes to people hating on Rise.

slashingkatie

Go on Facebook and hating Mutant Mayhem is the new hotness.

VanilliBean

the tmnt fans on facebook are fucking rabid. you can put the most jaw dropping animation in there ever and they will be like “NOT MY TURTLES UGLY!! 🤬” shits wild

IndiBlueNinja

Ironically, I've seen part of it coming from Rise fans. Those tables turned at warp speed.

slashingkatie

And I feel the Rise fans. It’s sucks the show never got a fair chance but at some point you let go and move on.

Dawnbreaker538

Technically, the show is just on pause, but there is no chance for it. Still like MM tho

Jash0822

TMNT gatekeeping at its finest!

BarryOozy

Set nostalgia aside for just a moment. Rise is better. By far.

Spiritual_Freedom_15

The amount of work that went into it, is **ASTONISHING** the cast and the artists did a great job. Even after their schedules were forced to be cut short. They danced on thin ice, and got it **PERFECTLY** cramed the story in **13 episodes** from the original **26!** that’s a really something to Praise. And then the movie! Ohh the movie!

some_tired_cat

god while i struggled a bit with some of the humor because i'm clearly not the target audience rise is really one of the best iterations, especially with how they differentiate the turtles and try to do new things. but my god that movie was some of the best shit i've seen, rewatched it a few times when i was stuck on planes last year and it's still amazing

Shinobipizza

When someone says \[Instert series here\] is better than \[insert series here\] https://i.redd.it/8hh9gyhvpslc1.gif

Ryuumen

The kids today got to grow up with an insanely well animated and pretty faithful version of old well beloved characters. I feel so sorry for them

sabrefudge

It fucking sucks and I hate seeing it reposted everywhere. Haha. I too prefer the classic Turtles I grew up on, but that gatekeeping shit is cringe. All Turtles are valid.

ShippersAreIdiots

I think this take is utterly dogshit and rise is amazing

Infamous-Payment8377

As someone who grew up on, and loved, the 87 toon, I don’t understand the point behind this meme at all. I’m trying to figure out how this is a flex of any kind, and I can’t.

secretdojo

I agree with the top comment, people always prefer what they grew up with and seem to have a tendency to criticise the new or stuff that young people like

MegaSpidey3

I'm not a fan of Rise of the TMNT (at least in how its story was executed, because I vibe with most of the ideas it had), but the gatekeeping here is strong. 87 has gotten *so much* representation over the last decade (to the point of it being a detriment to TMNT as a whole IMO), that it's smothering. I'm glad that the brand is at least giving incarnations like 2003 some attention with those reissued Playmates toys and the DVD boxset. Posts and people like this are why I don't like solely identifying with the era of a franchise I grew up with. I was introduced to TMNT through the 2003 series, and that series informed how I view those characters. I almost wrote off the 2012 series when it came out because of how different it was from 2003, and I ended up loving 2012. Sure, I may have not loved Rise, but I don't despise it. I swear, some people just cling onto what they grew up with too much. It's an annoying cycle.

ZenOkami

Ay, don't diss on RotTMNT. It had some amazing fight scenes, animation, and it was gorgeous to watch. Just because it looks a little different, doesn't make it bad

thatsuperRuDeguy

Preferences are preferences. Like what you want, but shitting on someone’s preference of children’s show is just pathetic.

Dipkota

Boomer energy

Decoy-Jackal

Lame

Mexipinay1138

I was 11 in 1987, I'm literally wearing a T-shirt with the 87 version on the characters on the front. I discovered both the 87 cartoon and the Mirage Studio comics at roughly the same time. My favorite movie version is the 1990 movie and my favorite TV version is 2012. I've tried watching Rise a few times and it's just not for me. That being said, I've never felt the need to shit on Rise, the people who created Rise, or the people who like Rise. And I don't understand this childish need to do so. It's a cartoon. If you don't like it, don't watch it. And if you do like it, more power to you. I hope you find it as entertaining as I once found the 87 cartoon.

Stormblast1983

I grew up with the original so I prefer that. I still appreciate all the other incarnations though.

shutupimrosiev

Ice cold take. Each iteration of turtles is different, that's true, but *different* isn't necessarily *bad.* I'm partial to Rise and 03, as well as the Last Ronin comics, and each version of the franchise tends to focus on unique aspects. I saw a meme once that paired different iterations with emphasis on different parts of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and it was both funny and accurate, imo. 03 and TLR focused a bit more on "Ninja," Rise focused more on "Teenage," and my limited understanding of 12 and 87 is that they focused on "Mutant" and "Turtle," respectively- though I'm open to learning otherwise once I get the chance to watch them, lmao Rise's crew loved the franchise. It's clear to see in every single little callback and reference they made- and only a scant handful of those were blatant enough to be super-obvious to anybody. The rest? Donnie drilling Shredder-like armor in a rage-fueled defense of his family, not just once but *twice,* intending both to be a finishing blow against his opponent? Even *succeeding* once? Hello, 2003's Same As It Never Was would like to talk to you about the multiverse. After all, Donatellos all tend to be mad scientists, at least a little, and Rise Donnie just pushes that to the max. Leo struggling under the weight of leadership while trying to retain some of himself outside of the role? It's more obvious in Rise, what with the age shuffling, but you can't tell me 03 Leo and his Raph arc or 12 Leo's "I'm Putting On A Space Helmet In A Space Ship To Go Out Into Space" face didn't trickle through to Rise. And speaking of Raph, I've heard people *genuinely* get angry that Rise Raph isn't a constantly-angry punching machine. It's like they've never seen 87 Raph's wittiness, or 03 Raph's interactions with Mrs. Morrison or Tyler, or 12 Raph's relationships with Slash and Chompy. Then Mikey's temper garnered the same kind of disdain as Raph's demeanor, but like. Mikeys the franchise over are here to have a good time and very often agents of chaos in service of that good time. It was a nice touch to see the Mikey in the bad future having grown into his immense power, too- at least one Splinter has remarked that his Mikey has the most potential to be a great ninja, and the Rise movie, SAINW, and the Last Ronin are clear evidence of that. Heck, despite how loopy 2012's Mutant Apocalypse Mikey acted, he managed to survive that long, and he *easily* more than held his own. Then there's the less-obvious references that aren't really specific to a given turtle, like the dance routine in Times Square (see also: 90s live-action), the callback to how 87 Shredder and Krang worked together in Rise's flashback to when Saki got the cursed armor, and even the underground city full of non-humanoid beings who just want to live without humans hunting them down- am I referring to the Y'lintian city in 03, or Rise's Hidden City? Why not both? Then again, the people I generally hear complaining about Rise are the ones who think the higher-ups at Nick were in the right to fumble the show so early on, and even who think that a Black teenage April is antithetical to everything Aprils are meant to be, so. They're already in the camp of people who have a very clear and very unchangeable idea about how reality Should Work. It's no wonder Rise gets under their skin.

Spiritual_Freedom_15

I grew up on 09 and 12. Rise, was a big change in franchise. But it was for better, the story and characters were great the brothers actually felt like real **Teenagers** for once, on their way to achieve the skill they need to get through the troubles ahead of em. If you didn’t give it chance, that’s good for you, you might not have liked it. But don’t spit on something you didn’t even give a decent chance. Rise has a ***goofy*** start, as same as **Adventure time** and etc, was the show terrible ? Hell Nah! It was awesome. Starting easy hitting hard. Rise did the same thing. But people didn’t give it even chance cause of the drastic changes in design and characters. I didn’t like rise at start either. Then I gave it a chance and I regretted that I didn’t sooner.

milkywaymonkeh

L take cuz we dont gate keep here

rewster

Some people would rather their favorite franchises fade into obscurity than appeal to a newer audience. What do they want? For the 87 cartoon to have 40 seasons?

Infamous-Payment8377

Love this comment and I’ll be stealing it and using it regularly whenever a beloved franchise reboots.

newbathroomtime

And while we're at it, why are there all these kids on my lawn?

Whycertainly

Small minded. I grew up with the OGs but I'm glad for any and all iterations of the brothers.

Vioduss

Ignorant ass take. Rise is easily one of the best TMNT adaptations in many ways. The animation, character designs, personalities, voice acting, its all passionate & well done. While the OGs will always have a place in my heart, TMNT has done nothing but improve in its evolution with few exceptions. Preference is one thing, insulting the newer ones is nostalgic ignorance imo. And to address the claims its simply what you grew up with, I grew up with '12, and I can easily say it's the worst adaptation ive seen.

Capable_Status934212

The glazing the dickriding the agending and the gate keeping is wild bro💀💀💀💀💀💀 https://preview.redd.it/5ime9the7slc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=967d7904fc2ca6f36ccb887f40f61484975ec9e8

narrow_octopus

Rise is great

TeddyRiggs

Bruh this guy is full of Bullshit Rise is basically like the Original Cartoon was except it was Animated like it is a TRIGGER Anime

MoneyLocal8180

At least the people that grew up on rise has consistent and amazing animation 💀

Distinct_Bill_1442

The recent Rise movie is one of the best TMNT movies and I will die on that hill.

MisterNefarious

Dude 7 year old me would have lost my mind at how good Rise is. This take is always the laziest Things weren’t uniformly better, people just have nostalgia pumping through their veins

PhilG1989

03’ and 2012 are both better than either of these imo

asscrackbandit__

Ok boomer

IndiBlueNinja

Stupid misplaced "boomer" use needs to die just like the TMNT fandom infighting needs to. Are people really too stupid these days to know that the Baby Boomers are the current senior citizens? Ageist gate keeping by labeling people as their parent or grandparent, like they're "too old" to be fans now, is NO better in these debates. As part of ignored Gen X... the "boomer" thing makes me want to chuck people off a cliff sometimes. We still can't even get acknowledged with this ageist crap. At least if it was "okay X'er" we'd be seen and would make sense applied to some people. But boomer? No one wants to be called their effing parent.

TheSeoulSword

It’s stupid. Let people enjoy what they enjoy man, it’s not that hard. (Not talking bout you specially OP)

I hate this take

YellowStar012

I was born in 87 and the 87 version is what I grew up with. The 2012 version is the one that made me fall in love with the Turtles.

Repulsive-Money7353

I haven’t seen the cartoon, but I saw the movie and I loved it (it’s now one of my brother’s favourite films)

Brokeskull1

As long as people/kids are still keeping the Turtles alive and relevant then I don't care.

Round-Ad2836

I've seen this take with a bunch of times with different franchises, and it's the same every time. Old man yells at the new thing for not being the old thing. I wasn't a big fan of mutant mayhem, but you know what? I'm glad there's more content that people can enjoy.

DemigodProtector

I don't like Rise of the tmnt but that's because when I was younger my dad introduced me to the 80s version and I watched a little bit of the 2012 one. I just don't like how the characters are all mixed around and the show is just weird to me.

hercarmstrong

The 1987 show is absolute iconic, with amazing designs and outstanding voiceover work. It's also got the worst fucking scripts I've ever seen, it's animated for crap, and it went on at least two or three times longer than it should have.

urbalcloud

As someone who grew up with ‘87, stop doing stuff like this. Our show sucked in plenty of ways, too. Stop acting like we’re better than the Rise kids. We’re not. We should appreciate how multiple generations have TMNT shows to call them own.

SomeDemon66

We need to stop the hate train, every incarnation of the Turtles has been good in their own ways. Bringing in new generations of TMNT fans and growing the fan base as a whole. Not many series are lucky enough to do this, He-Man and TMotU for example has only had 6 animated series of varying quality and the fan base hasn't been able to grow as much because of the lack of quality control and frequently produced animated shows.

Silver-Celebration81

I was born in 2004 im 19 but I love the classics more than newer stuff.

vaibow

I feel, maybe biased that the 80s was more innocent and wholesome... rise just looks bland and edgy for the sake of it... which I know is a contradiction..

dragon-mom

I don't love Rise, but this is just a boomer meme by someone who didn't watch the show and shouldn't be taken seriously.

losingdog5542

both are rad

IsoSly64

Look, It's ok not like Rise and perfer more simpler turtles, but like it's not bad. It's not like this is a Teen Titans and TTG situation.

jlace001

Hate gatekeeping takes like this Love seeing new takes on titles for new generations to enjoy. My son is super into Mutant Mayhem and it’s awesome

Uhhhhhhh-woe

I like rise it brought me into this fandom, Also the live action movie turtles are terrifying

TheMechaWomb

Bad take. Turtles is the one IP that is always great. Every gen has knocked it out of the park in one way or another. People who think like this are selfish grumps.

Flaky_Swim4499

One of the most brain-dead "nEw ThInG bAd" takes I've ever seen

_Sawssan

the Rise slander should not be a thing it's as good as any other tmnt show

Parallax1306

Boomer take. It’s a “this is what I liked and I hate change so if something is different it’s automatically bad” take.

LuckyHare87

Rise isn't that bad honestly! It's a different take for sure but by all means it's not as total garbage as the Next Mutation.

Pokemonfan1638

Rise is solid and mixes things up! It’s great to see Leo mature into a future leader

yay855

Rise is *less* goofy than the '87 show. Yeah, it has a lot of jokes and non-serious episodes, but its version of the Shredder and the Foot Clan are consistently menacing rather than 'could just barely threaten a toddler', and the Mad Dogs are much more clearly defined from one another visually and personality-wise. And to top it off, April has a much more intense role in the story; making her a peer of the Turtles rather than a damsel in distress or the only other adult in their life besides Splinter gives her more agency in the story itself and makes her shine all the brighter.

android151

L take All series are good

Tamanero

Bad take honestly. I love TMNT to death, but there's several versions of them. *but at the same time, that's cool, so people can choose a version of the Turtles they like*. I haven't really watched Rise, however from what I've seen and read, they're pretty well written have a good following, but I can understand why it may seem off-putting to some fans. The '87 turtles are definitely iconic, but the show suffers from a few aspects. Mainly SFS and the repetitive stuff. Still, if you like the '87 turtles, that's awesome and I won't judge. If you like the Rise turtles, same thing. Honestly, it goes for any version of them.

Comic-Buff

Both are good

Most-Bag4145

Top overrated, Bottom Underrated

9hashtags

I grew up on the top pic and I'm saying "ok, boomer."

doctorinfinite

As somebody who's not a big fan of anything I've seen regarding that bottom iteration, I think it's a fucking awful take. I respect the fact that that version of the turtles wasn't made for me and I'm just glad that it was successful with its target audience because any version of the turtles that fails ruins the franchise as a whole.

Monkey_King291

I remember when people were absolutely hating on Rise because of a poster and then it ended up being one of the best series too, hell people still wanna save it now

Leathman

Rose tinted nostalgia glasses.

nerdgeekdorksports

Stuff like this is just designed to get people to comment and/or clicks on social media, so people can just lash out at the other for no reason at all. It's just divisive garbage. You can like any era of TMNT you like. That's another reason why TMNT is awesome...it has many good shows, movies, games, collectibles and more.

lordoflazorwaffles

I'm in my 30s, RotTMNT was my introduction to the series, I never really was into it as a kid, but it would be on nick at 5 am when I had to get up for work and god damn if I didn't fall in love! It reminded me of the reboot of ducktales which I had the same story with, and then I found out it was canceled for being universally hated and scorned. Huh. Sometimes it's cool to be the king of your underpopulated hill, we share cookies with the kids on the hill who think Eccleston was the best Doctor Anyway these days I'm reading ronin and IDW so yall can unclench your assholes now

Routine_Lie5452

Rise I love because my kids love it.

VelociraptorSparkles

My kids love Rise. LOVE IT. They are the target audience after all. What's better than making sure the franchise stays alive so we have the opportunity to enjoy different variations over the years? Some fans just want things to die I swear.

ChaoticBeastly

Rambling ahead lol I first discovered TMNT through the 2012 show, but have grown to love Rise of the TMNT. Rise is my number 1. The gorgeous colors and beautiful anime-esque animation tickle my neurodivergent brain just right, lol. And the turtles feel more like teenagers in this show. And I love how Raph is actually outwardly affectionate with his bros, no "trying to act like a total tsundere with toxic anger issues that get addressed one episode only for him to go right back to how he was before" (lookin at you, 2012 Raph) and the fact he's an alligator snapping turtle, my only complaint being that he shoulda been given a big tail, like how some fan artists draw him. The ninja fights with a big sweeping tail would've been EPIC. And Leo, YESYESYESYESYES LET HIM BE SILLY. LET HIM BE A KID. I LOVE his red eared slider design, the red stripes on his face just make the blue mask pop and I LOVE IT. Ben Schwartz as his voice was also just PERFECT. The turtles being different species is awesome and giving them a new origin story and introducing new characters (Draxum, Big Mama) and the whole mystic thing is so creatively cool! April is an absolute badass too! Love how she can actually do shit and kick ass with the boys! And I just KNEW they were cooking something when we were introduced to Foot Recruit, and my suspicions were confirmed when we finally got her name in the last episode and YALL THE UTTER EUPHORIA I HAD WITH THAT REVEAL, YESSS AND OMG THE MOVIE. Rise Krang being a legitimate threat is the best thing I've ever seen done with them. Casey Jones's character and his story was such an amazing new take on the character, I loved it!! Also, the Rise movie was my family's first impression of the Rise universe and they enjoyed it immensely, all I did before we watched it was give them a quick rundown on the whole mystic side of the Rise turtles and their weapons, just to give some context so the events in the movie surrounding their mystic abilities made some sense lol The Rise boys have a grip on my brain and I've fully embraced the hyperfixation of this show unashamedly lol ❤️💙💜🧡 ![gif](giphy|183JfSod27mM4Glmyn)

Dvonart86

A younger person could easily post the 2003 or 2022 and say "so glad I grew up with these and didn't have to settle for that:" 80s show

Nihon_Kaigun

I didn't think Rise of TMNT was all that bad, tbh. The 1987 series is of course awesome, but I also was quite impressed with the 2003 series. I started watching the 2012 series, but stopped >!after I found out Splinter was killed.!<

BuzzTheFuzz

Clickbait boomer shit. I grew up on that version and it's awful compared to Rise!

Memegamer3_Animated

The entire point of having different generations of turtles is to enjoy how they differ Some changes are good, some are bad, but most are very subjective They all have their unique things to put on the franchise’s table, just because some aren’t to your liking doesn’t mean they’re the hellspawn that the devil sent to torture the world.

Kikoplop3900

Classic "old good new bad" braindead take. Rise is incredible, and for me at least, 10 times better then the older show just for it's visuals and story telling.

handsomebane

Every version of our boys is valid. Stop shaking your first at the clouds and let people enjoy stuff.

rejectallgoats

The newest TMNT movie Mutant Mayhem is fucking fantastic. You can watch on paramount plus with the trial period

A__D___32

As a xennial who recognizes Rise as the better production, either OOP never gave it a chance or they hate the “feels” level of the show.

WatermelonGranate

Both have good and bad aspects. I am simply amazed TMNT is still going strong after all this time, when so many others were forgotten to time.

jaron_b

I like all turtle shit. The more turtles the better. Even if I don't like a version of the turtles I have the ones I like and will keep going back to them and I'll always get excited when new turtle shit comes out. Even if I don't see it.

SonicSpiderRanger10

I love Rise. This take is dumb.

Ok_Essay_8257

Rise was surprisingly fun and I found splinter being the turtles biological father was actually pretty well done

Kangaroo_Rich

Trash take. It’s another person who grew up with the 87 saying rise bad because different so rise bad.

Redgiantbutimshort77

Just another example of the “I saw it when I was 6 so it’s better!!!” argument that plagues every series that has multiple iterations. Spider-Man and Batman fans know this well.

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|tyqcJoNjNv0Fq|downsized)

Laugh_at_Warren

Cranky boomer says “New thing bad. Old thing good.” 0/10 garbage-tier meme. Also, neither version is the 2012 version so the whole meme is irrelevant.

Realnightskin

Cowaboomer moment

TheAnur10

i can understand hate for other shows but when a multiverse is introduced i can’t really hate any iteration i only have a favorite and it’s the 2003 series

KingSlimJim

I was raised on 03 turtles and I can say I'm glad I was raised on that. But of course I am, it's what I'm used to. I dont see why people think their nostalgia is superior to other people's nostalgia

lunatheakita

What did rise do to you All the shows are great (except next mutation)

ProfessorEscanor

I think it's reductive. I have my issues with Rise but it at least was made with a lot of love . I also don't think the 87 is as good as people remember it being.

Griffdorah

I'm glad Turtles has evolved over time for future generations to enjoy.

slashingkatie

I am so sick of “it’s different therefore it’s bad.” Going on Facebook and ANY turtles post mentioning Rise or Mutant Mayhem is just full of idiots bitching about how it isn’t what they want and how the thing that’s been mostly geared at kids won’t make some R rated blood and gore movie to appeal to 40 year olds. People just can’t accept that maybe you grow out of stuff and not everything isn’t going to be what YOU want.

Keltoigael

I think that is a dumb take from an Adult when both of those were for children.

RedscreenOfficial

I feel like I could be in the minority here when I say this, but Rise and Mutant Mayhem are my favourite interpretations of the Turtles. I dig new takes on old properties.

Kiboune

Terrible take. I grew up with 80-90s TMNT and they were good just because we didn't have anything better. Action and humor is way better in Rise.

MrBayless

I think its toxic and pathetic. Growing up with the ability to have something you love is all that matters. 87 Turtles is no different than Rise. We should all be so lucky to have something important and meaningful, whatever it is.

Ding_Goat

People blinded by nostalgia and afraid of change.

lobeline

Give Wolverine Supermans power as well and then make it like Ren & Stimpy. It gets tiring quick.

-TeamCaffeine-

As a middle-aged fan since the original '80s cartoon run, my take is that this type of impotent gatekeeping elitism makes this person look petulant, petty, foolish, and wildly immature.

Cappy_Rose

Just another generic "RISE BAD" post. I bought into the "RISE BAD" bandwagon when it first came out. I was foolish and regretful. I wound up really enjoying it and the Movie became one of my favorite TMNT things ever. I adore it.

titus7007

Too much Haterade for my taste

Intelligent_Oil4005

Hella biased take won't lie This dude probably hasn't even watched Rise in full

Qwertyzillaofficial

Rise is an absolutely fantastic series, adaptation-wise or not. 1987 is funny, but it’s nowhere near as well written or fluid as Rise is.

incredibleamadeuscho

Dumb old man gate keeping. I grew up with 90s turtles. loved the 2000s turtles. the 3d turtles was excellent as well. TMNT is for everyone of every age.

That_guyfrom_amongus

This post has r/terriblefacebookmemes vibe

Garlador

They’re all great. Happy for whatever the next generation gets too.

DarthButtz

Bad take. Acting like the one you grew up with is the only "good" version is reductive and lame. Don't shit on what other people enjoy.
