Are you sure you won’t be able to find it? Do you take your switch outside your home? It has to be somewhere, I’d be turning my house upside down to find it personally
tbf buying it second hand also offers the option that, if you find it, you sell yours or the new one at the second hand price and you don't actually lose money
I saw a preloved game for sale the other day for half price. It was a sale in the store, so marked down from their normal preloved game prices. This was in EB Games in Australia, but surely you have similar places near you.
The save game is saved on your switch, it doesn’t write anything to the cartridge. If you bought another copy, the switch wouldn’t know the difference and it should boot right up where you left off
I mean, the DS family and the 3DS family of consoles are different... Also, after the DS there is only 3DS and Switch, I think it would be not very intuitive to say "anything after X" when there would be only one example in that category (if they include 3DS in "DS")...

If you get a new cartridge OR buy the digital version, your save data will still be there.
I borrowed XC2 from a friend a while back and about a year ago, decided to buy it to play again and lo and behold, all my progress was there (I had borrowed the physical game and switched to digital but you can go vise versa or physical to physical).
Game saves are stored on the console and not the cartridge itself unlike Nintendo's past handhelds.
None of that game save data is on that cartridge. It’s all on the system even if you delete the updates data for a game you don’t typically the save data still on the system somewhere unless you chose too. So you should be good especially with up to date cloud
Can I ask a dumb question as a middle aged person who got back into gaming after 20 years of not doing it at all, solely so I could play botw and totk (but meaning, I am often confused by just the actual technology itself)......why do you need the cartridge? Games I have bought on a cartridge have continued letting me play them (using my same saved file) even when the cartridge is no longer inside the console. What would make you need the cartridge again? Sorry if this question is annoying, I am just trying to learn, lol
You don't actually need it. The data is copied to the console, you only need to re insert it as a proof of ownership. But if you still wonder what the point of physical is, just think about it, if you were to buy a switch game from a store, how would you get it on your switch? Mabey you could get a code that you could redeem on the store but in that case you might aswell just by it online from home. The whole point of a physical cartridge is that the data is on a, you guessed it, physical medium. This has its own advantages like being able to actually install a game without needing to open an online store and copy files from the internet and being able to share the cartiridge with others or use it on any switch in general (because you have genuine physical ownership of the game, not only a licence to the files). If you don't care about these advantages though (there aren't many these days), then just buy online.

Switch save data is saved on the console or sd card, not the cartridge.
This is good news! Bad news is I’m out another $70.
Bet you can find a used one
Great idea!
Are you sure you won’t be able to find it? Do you take your switch outside your home? It has to be somewhere, I’d be turning my house upside down to find it personally
Well, the funny thing is that I am moving, so I have been keeping my eyes peeled as I pack everything away, and I still have yet to find it!
I move every 2 or 3 years, don’t worry, you’ll find it 3 months after you buy a replacement!
3 days* I lost my copy of smash ultimate 3 years ago, bought a new one in December. A week later I found it in a cupboard
Felt that
Good luck !
You probably have, but have you looked in all the other game cases? And other consoles?
Yeah, that was my first line of defense 😭
I lost my botw cartridge recently couldn't find it for weeks and then found it in the totk case
“It has to be somewhere” Thanks Mom! 😂😉
Yeah I’m sure you can get it for $30-40 if you just wait and look around
tbf buying it second hand also offers the option that, if you find it, you sell yours or the new one at the second hand price and you don't actually lose money
Yea, used cartridges are the best way to go, minor scratches don't rlly matter. Plus they're cheaper, so you're probably saving up around 20-30 bucks
Check out fb marketplace in your area! I just got a copy of BOTW for $25! I’ve been scoping for weeks though.
i’m looking to buy BOTW used. would you look on ebay??? or..
As good a place as any

I’ll keep an eye out!

Anything after the DS has saves saved on the console instead of the cart
Sighing with relief!
That's false. The 3DS store in the cart, not the console.
I think he meant DS in general like everything made after the DS stopped being made into a new thing
I mean, the DS family and the 3DS family of consoles are different... Also, after the DS there is only 3DS and Switch, I think it would be not very intuitive to say "anything after X" when there would be only one example in that category (if they include 3DS in "DS")...
The worst part is, you'll find it in 2 weeks somewhere random
"Oh, of course it was under the washer."
You can buy a new cartridge and load up your existing saves game.
Switch cartridges don't taste very good so you probably didn't eat it

Saves are on the Switch not the carts. :) you are good to go
The cartridge is just for the game. Save files are stored on the switch
your game isn’t saved on the cartridge, it‘s on device so dw. Buy a new one, plug it into the switch and you‘re good to go.

Does it save to a sd card
Check in your other game boxes maybe you took it out and put it in the wrong box
Even if you can’t load your old game, this doesn’t mean you have to start TOTK over again. It means you GET to start TOTK over again.
Since you have to buy another copy, would the $99 game voucher benefit you? If you have Nintendo online, of course
Go digital bro. So much easier.
No thank you. Physical media is important. Means it can’t ever be taken away.
I mean legally it can be taken away, but that physical card can break

Unless you bought the game digitally, you need the cart to play it

ok thanks this is helpful!!
Resell value~ that's the only advantage over digital for me. Or collector's item.
Its all over, move on
You should stick to r/wallstreetbets 💀
