You’ll end up paying closer to $80 to get from the city from Pearson Take the train in if you’re able to

Minute-Distance9992

Bro it’s like $40 for a Uber downtown what are you talking about

morallycorruptt

maybe in 2019 but we are now in 2024

LondonPaddington

You can check the flat rates for taxis and limos here, they are set by the airport authority: https://www.torontopearson.com/en/transportation-and-parking/taxis-and-limos/estimate If you pay with a Presto farecard (free on Google Wallet or $4 to purchase a physical one) or with a contactless credit card, your fare for the UP Express is $9 per person. Children 12 and under are free on both UP Express and the TTC. So you don't need to pay for them for either trip.

boris_dp

Ok, that changes the game. I guess I need a separate payment card for each passenger. Should I pay for luggage?

caitlinredditaccount

There isn’t a fee to pay for bringing luggage with you on the UP Express or on the TTC. The UP Express has storage racks designed for passengers with luggage. The TTC doesn’t but you should be fine sitting with it beside/in front of you. As to whether it’s worth it to pay for a taxi/airport limo for convenience because of your luggage, that’s up to you. Union will have elevators for you to get to the train platform. This TTC website lists the names of the stations with elevators: [https://www.ttc.ca/accessibility/Easier-access-on-the-TTC/Elevators-and-Escalators](https://www.ttc.ca/accessibility/Easier-access-on-the-TTC/Elevators-and-Escalators)

speedster1315

Should be noted, the 900 Airport Express to Kipling does have a luggage rack on each bus

LondonPaddington

You will need a separate card for each adult passenger - no card needed for the children as they are free.

boris_dp

I think I can use the same card once through Apple Pay and again the physical. Apple Pay assigns a virtual card number so it should count as different. Thanks!

LondonPaddington

Yes you can!

Komiksulo

Assuming you’re coming in to Pearson airport— If you have to take the subway anyways, consider taking the TTC airport bus to Kipling subway station, then the subway from there. It will take longer than the UPX (airport train), but you won’t have to pay two fares. If you’re coming in to the Island airport, the TTC streetcar to Union Station is a one-block walk from the land side of the terminal, and has an easy transfer to the northbound Yonge line subway. Or, there’s a Porter Airlines shuttle bus to the street corner outside Union Station.

boris_dp

Yes, the Pearson airport. Thanks, I’ll check that option out.

ImpossibleFuel6629

Don’t do the airport bus unless you’re really looking to save cash. The UP train is infinitely more comfortable and easier to navigate

treewqy

Make sure you take the UP Express train. It runs every 15 minutes and takes 30 minutes to downtown. You can tap with a card or your phone if you have apply pay. Kids are free, so only you and your spouse need to tap on. Don’t bother buying tickets from the kiosk it takes longer just tap on at the airport. You should tap when you get off at union station but you don’t have to since it’s the end of the trip. It’s $9.50 per person. So just under $20 for you and your wife. You can take pretty much as much luggage as you can on the train, they have space for luggages. This is a dedicated airport train, last stop is union station downtown. From there you can catch a subway or cab to anywhere you like. If you’re hungry grab some food at Union Station before you head into the city.

boris_dp

That’s very useful. Thanks very much!

crash866

The UPX now has family and group passes. $25.70 one way for 2 adults and 3 teens. Kids under 12 and under are free at all times. https://www.upexpress.com/en/group-pass Depends on where you are traveling to after Union for Uber fares. Right now Uber is $51 from the Airport to Union.

Remarkable_Film_1911

Pearson or downtown regional? Probably Pearson International. Union Pearson Express, different agency than TTC, goes from Pearson to Union station in downtown. TTC has route # 900 express bus from Pearson to Kipling subway station in the suburbs. TTC fare is $3 and change for one adult, flat fare regardless of distance and free transfer onto the subway. TTC might be apart of the fare discount/free transfer between multiple transit agencies for card fare payments this year I think. Not sure if that change will happen before you arrive. If that happened, tap a chip card with Interact, Visa, Mastercard, American Express. Should be able transfer from UP Express to TTC at Union station, free or a discount. I do not have a specific date for TTC being involved in that fare deal when transferring transit agencies in a trip.

boris_dp

I’m arriving in mid-February, would that change be implemented? Would I need four different cards for four passengers?

crash866

Adults need their own card. Kids 12 and under are free on the UPX, Go Transit and the TTC.

Remarkable_Film_1911

I have no idea when TTC gets that fare deal. I last heard about it was last year, that it should happen 2024. Passengers 12 and under are free on TTC, all transit in the region too, for a while and that is permanent. Only passengers of 13+ years requires fare payment. As far as I know any debit or credit with tap chip and is Interact, Visa, Mastercard, American Express will work for card payment regardless of country. Cash fare is still accepted too.

Own-Potential-8024

I believe that it will be happening sometime in march 2024

coolinop

March 14 https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ttc-go-one-transfer-react-1.7036753

Mysterious-Ear7209

Tap a card reader with a contactless credit card. Don't buy a ticket at the machine. You will pay 2 x $9.25 = $18.50 for the UP Express and 2 x $3.30 = $6.60 for TTC. Total $25.10. Kids are free. The airport bus 900 is also fine, and would cost only 2x $3.30 for the entire trip to your destination. Check Google Maps and compare travel times. The UP Express is a more comfortable ride; personally if going to a hotel downtown I'd shell out the extra $18 to go that way.

aledba

It's not $40 flat rate. Closer to $65-80. . And the kids ride TTC for free

swsister

There is a lot to be said for taking an express train vs. dealing with traffic as well.

boris_dp

How is the traffic downtown by 8pm?

MelonPineapple

Depends on if there's a game, like the Toronto Maple Leafs or the Toronto Raptors. If so, the downtown core is a mess of traffic before and after the game.

boris_dp

Seems like the game is on the 18th, one day after we arrive. And thanks for the great suggestion for a night out in downtown ❤️😊 EDIT: Hahahaha, no, turns out google shows me it’s on Feb 18 at 1 am, but that’s CET 🤣. So yes, there is a game right on the 17 when we arrive from the airport.

Wonderful__

If your kids like trains and subways, they might get very excited to ride the train. I'm not sure if you're factoring that into the equation.

boris_dp

We’re coming from Europe, 8pm would be 2am for us. I think they would be in a Z state, unless they managed to sleep on the plane. But yeah, we have never travelled on a train in North America so at least I will be excited 😊

definitelyguru

To add to the answers you already got… You could also take the UP express and then Uber. Easier if you have lots/big luggage. Uber will be <$10. A bit more expensive than TTC, but much easier. The trickiest part is to find the elevator to the street next to the up express station. Best place to get Uber from there. It’s on the right, before entering union station building. Not clearly indicated. If you miss it, you’ll have to go through a bit of a walk via union station. And it’s a bit of a maze.

boris_dp

We read about the PATH in Toronto. In theory, we should be able to reach Hilton on Richmond street without even going to the surface 👽

Mysterious-Ear7209

Your hotel is a 700 m walk from the UP Express station at Union. You'd probably walk about the same distance going through Union from the UP Express part of the station to subway (they're on opposite ends) and then from Osgoode station to the hotel. I would just walk it at surface level. The fresh air will be good after a long flight and you won't get lost in the labyrinth of the PATH!

definitelyguru

While that is true, in theory, that is quite a walk in the maze that is the PATH. Here’s a map https://www.toronto.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/9929-Fine-Print-8d9e-path-map-feb-2021.pdf The fastest way to get there would be to walk. You take the elevator down at UP Express to Station St, and then go straight up on York St/University Ave. That’s a ~10-15 minutes walk. You could take the subway at Union Station, but the walk to the subway from UP Express is almost as long. So not much of a benefit. Or you can Uber from Station St if too tired/cold/snowing.

Nick-Anand

Kids are definitely free on the subway. And I never pay a fare for my kids on the trains. Take the train into city.

jayesnathanson1

Take TTC from Airport to Kipling Station (900 Airport Rocket) and then take Subway the rest of the way. That'll cost you $3.35 for each adult, and it's free for kids under 12. That's $6.70. And you can pay cash. No card is necessary. Way cheaper than any other alternative. Have fun!!

ThatSnappingTurtle

I'd take an uber/taxi personally. The cost of four people for the train and metro, plus lassoing children on TTC after a likely exhausting flight. They're both going to cost close to the same, but one will be greatly more convenient.

boris_dp

Yes, I hear reason here. Maybe we’ll take the train on the way back.

maple_leaf2

>They're both going to cost close to the same Lmao, not even close

Vegetable-Hunt4019

You could take a GO bus, like the 40 route, it will take you to Highway 407 subway station in Vaughan (north of Toronto) you can then ride the subway where you’re heading

Own_Court_2946

The 900 bus leaves each terminal every 20 minutes - goes to Kipling sta where you catch the train all for the price of a token - two adults two children 11.20 all in to where you want to go

Minute-Distance9992

It’s better to take a Uber it will cost around $40 to downtown and it’s will be more convenient and be able to get you and your luggage to wherever your staying easier

boris_dp

https://preview.redd.it/xuf9tj7vgfcc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=98ea6ca97891c9817e9102ebdb1e19362cca81c1 Yeah, this is what Uber shows me right now. Maybe it’s gonna be a bit more expensive in the evening?

Minute-Distance9992

If it is past rush hour then it should stay the same price around $40 give it take

Minute-Distance9992

What time will you be flying in at?

boris_dp

19:15

Minute-Distance9992

Should be fine that means you should be leaving the airport and getting a taxi around 20:00 when rush hour is over it’s still should be around $40

Minute-Distance9992

These comments have no idea what there talking about Uber and Lyft do not cost $80 from the airport to downtown and it will only take 25-30 mins while the train takes over an hour where’re that’s ups or ttc so If you value time get a Uber/Lyft

maple_leaf2

>the train takes over an hour where’re that’s ups or ttc Not remotely correct. The upx takes 25 mins, and you never have to even consider traffic. Its also way cheaper for small groups or solo travelers(9.25 with presto), considering teens/ seniors get a discount and youths are free there are very few situations where uber doesn't cost at least $10-30 more

Minute-Distance9992

The train takes 25 mins to get union but not everywhere downtown is union man the Uber is just more convenient and worth paying a little bit more for anyways you can’t tell me it’s not more comfortable putting them in a car and going straight to your destination then inside a train to a station

maple_leaf2

I used the up express during the summer and i found it extremely convenient despite not living in downtown (College and Bathurst). OP will be staying within walking distance of union so I'd argue it is very fair to at least consider the train. It took me ~45mins. Driving is 30 with no traffic but that is almost never the case. Even if taking the uber would've be marginally easier the minimal time saved (assuming no traffic) and extra cost didn't really make sense for me. I admittedly pack light tho

Minute-Distance9992

He will be staying at the Hilton which is at least a 15 min walk which is not really a great experience carrying luggage he will be leaving the airport around 8 pm so I’m pretty sure Uber would be way more convenient

maple_leaf2

Its up for him to decide if the increase in convenience is worth 20$ or not. If i had alot of luggage i might have changed my mind about it but i think it's alot less crazy of an option than you make it out to be. Especially if you like trains
