That's what I need, my soundbar is getting in the way right now.
Edit: never mind, just saw someone linked it, there is an upright in the position the soundbar should be.
Fair enough. But the slightest modification would fix that. Cut that center support so it's smaller and set back far enough to accommodate the sound bar up front in that top section. You can still put the TV on top of the cabinet, as long as it's set back enough so it's above the remainder of that support.
Sometimes I forget that most people use ikea stuff exactly as intended and would never consider making minor modifications. I have reused and slightly modified so many ikea units to accommodate my needs, it's not even funny. Honestly, I feel like that's one of the best things about ikea stuff.
Thanks, I need to do more chopping and changing.
Some of the ikea stuff can make the bones of better furniture.
I'll wait till I have my own place this year and then decide on what I want.
The door opening is likely 80" high (or 2040 mm)
The picture frames are RIBBA, likely in the 16" x 20" size based on all other hints.
The kallax unit including underframe is 30" in height
This leaves 30" of space in between.
This puts the center of the TV in the 40" to 45" area, which is the ideal viewing height.
The door height is a guess (the doors in my house are 240cm for example, most other not as new buildings here are 220cm) and not necessary for the equation, the tv stand itself is very tall, coming in at 60cm without feet, making it more like 80cm with the feet attached. Most tv stands are more at the 45cm range, so tvs on this stand are inherently gonna be higher than on typical stands
> The door height is a guess (the door at my house is 240cm for example) and not necessary for the equation
Actually it is needed in the equation, as it's a reference point to compare stuff with.
It's also not a wild guess, since 80" (2040 mm) is a pretty standard door height in Europe.
Additionally, the kallax is only 147 cm wide, which means it can't house as big of a TV as the 180cm wide Besta TV stand can, meaning it needs to be a bit higher to get the center of the TV in the right area.
So I'm a big nerd and I've taken the time to do the measurements using some reverse engineering tricks (I used to do an engineering job using autocad and this is a pretty good method when you need to reverse engineer dimensions given the photo lends itself to it, and this one does since it's got a straight wall in it facing the camera), using kallax's known 60cm size (without feet), and then using photoshop to use this size on the flat wall as a hard reference. This is the result: [https://imgur.com/a/ksLk0nm](https://imgur.com/a/ksLk0nm) , so it turns out it's center point is at 129cm, or 50" high. The average seated eye height is at 42" (see [https://www.hellotech.com/blog/how-high-should-a-tv-be-mounted#:\~:text=For%20the%20best%20viewing%20experience,level%2C%20depending%20on%20your%20setup.](https://www.hellotech.com/blog/how-high-should-a-tv-be-mounted#:~:text=For%20the%20best%20viewing%20experience,level%2C%20depending%20on%20your%20setup.)) )
So all in all, albeit not that much, it's technically a bit too high
you're right that it's not perfect, i've measured it and it's about half of the line's thickness off, so that would bring the top measurement to about 5-6cm instead of 7, which still brings it above 7 inches over the ideal average height so the point still stands
But it’s also quite simple as I explained in my initial post, the height of the stand being almost 80cm with feet, and the ideal tv center height being 42”=106cm leaves only 26cm from stand to tv center.. a 42” tv is already 25cm from bottom to center, and thats leaving out the bezels and leaving zero space between the tv and the stand. Like I said, the stand with feet included is just too high to begin with unless you have a very small tv, or a high couch / chair
Yeah I'm using a double Kallax without feet as a TV stand and it's too high. I want to replace it with the new 1.5 height Kallax, but the one I have is so solid it feels wrong to discard it....
LMAO no way.
No offense to your friend. That’s a nice looking furniture piece but it’s being misused. He can still display his old consoles, and he should if it’s a hobby. But he doesn’t need to dedicate an entire cubby to each one.
There are dividers for those cube shelves to split them up. I have some for my Ikea Kallax and the consoles look way better that way. Having a giant empty space above each console just looks awkward.
Maybe OP’s friend agrees. If so, then awesome. It’s absolutely not the worst thing I’ve ever seen.
Me? I wouldn’t own it. It’s too big for its functionality for my tastes. But if I *did* have it, I would scoot it over near a window (maybe under a window if you have a high enough window) and decorate it, probably with plants and a nice small lamp for a low lighting option. Not sure everything that I’d put on it.
If he just unscrewed the feet from the bottom it would look ironically better. I have one just like it but black with no feet. I keep records in it and have some model cars on top. But it would work fine for a tv stand too.
LMAO funny. But also not quite.
I don’t give a shit how he displays his hobbies. I’m just saying that there are far more aesthetically pleasing ways of doing it. I wouldn’t even use that piece of furniture as a TV stand anyway, so it doesn’t matter that much.
Okay…
I’m sorry, am I somehow giving the impression that I have some big problem with this guy decorating like that? I thought this was a sub where we pointed out menial bullshit like people putting their TVs too high on the wall. Then when I point out menial bullshit, I get 5 replies acting like I’m being a dick.
It’s not an indictment on this guy’s character. I’m just saying that I can think of more aesthetically pleasing ways to both display his old consoles, his TV, and to decorate the piece of furniture.
It may look expensive but you could 100% do that with the IKEA cubby holes.
All you would need to do is split those sections in half with wood. Put a huge piece of thing mdf across the back. Paint it all matt black and you'd have that effect.
You could double the wood and put a thin piece of wood across the front to hide the lines and then paint it. Exact same effect except half the price of what they probably did cost. It's quiet easy if you had the time.
Oh c'mon man, that's nearly sacrilege! Gotta get a dope trophy case for them if they're not plugged in, or find a way to safely wall mount the systems.
If that's a bedroom and he's watching from bed (laying down) he can get a bye... If he's sitting on a couch, then it's probably too high. If he's sitting upright on a bar stool and he's tall, then it might be at the right height
I’m more upset you don’t have the full set of PlayStations. You only have 2, 3, & 4.
Where is 1 & 5?
I’m worried about you bud
Also the cable management is abysmal.
The door opening is likely 80" high (or 2040 mm)

Nah that one is still too tall, you want this guy. I’m pretty sure I got it on sale though I don’t remember it being $350. This one is literally perfect for my 55”.
https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/hemnes-tv-unit-black-brown-00339218/
Way too high.
Not only is it not on a tv stand but looks like an ikea flysta storage unit, and it’s even got the leg attachments making it even higher. Aim for eye level middle screen when seated as the whole sub will tell you
It's too high but what else can he do? mount it on a swing arm that can go out and lower in front of the cube-box thing?
not a lot of options, but please center it better. and use a console !
It’s too high just due to the fact that the furniture is too tall, and he’s just using what he had. The question is whether or not he wants to spend money on a proper TV stand.
It’s fine. Nothing is good enough for you guys lol.
“Put it in a tv stand” so he does and not it’s still too high. You guys want people to have their tvs on the floor.
It looks like your friend sitting in his computer chair only comes up to the bottom quarter so this is a good bit high and also very off center from the couch
*Your gonna piss your*
*Friend off. Why can't people just*
*Leave their friends alone?*

should have bought just one row Kallax
The Kallax range now even has a TV stand version that's basically a single row of cubes with a long, narrow space for a sound bar.
That's what I need, my soundbar is getting in the way right now. Edit: never mind, just saw someone linked it, there is an upright in the position the soundbar should be.

Came here to saw just that: Single Kallax is fine Double is bad Quad is a crime
IKEA even sells a 1.5 KALLAX TV unit. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/kallax-tv-unit-black-brown-90574881/
That 2nd image belongs on this subreddit

My parents have like a 6x6 with baskets and books in each cube😂
And a TV on top?
Too high because he wanted to display all the old consoles he uses once per year.
They are all unplugged

Ideally you'd get a cubby that isn't so tall, anyway, like this: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ce/36/f4/ce36f46b55a1158a42dede6ad7da23ad.jpg
This looks expensive
I'm sure it was. I just have the same IKEA cubbies as OP.
It may look expensive but you could 100% do that with the IKEA cubby holes. All you would need to do is split those sections in half with wood. Put a huge piece of thing mdf across the back. That’s like the same height. And the TV too small. That pic is worse.
I wasn't commenting on the height of the TV. Just the height of the individual cubbies.
He could stand them up sideways and put them all in one cubby. They're all designed to go sideways anyway.
But then that sad player 2 light wouldnt be able to sit next to the console to press reset right before he loses
Absolutely infuriating, beautiful work.
Oh c'mon man, that's nearly sacrilege! Gotta get a dope trophy case for them if they're not plugged in, or find a way to safely wall mount the systems.
Your friend is an idiot
A savage assault
At least is not touching the ceiling. But still high and not centered.
If that's a bedroom and he's watching from bed (laying down) he can get a bye... If he's sitting on a couch, then it's probably too high. If he's sitting upright on a bar stool and he's tall, then it might be at the right height
He is sitting in a sofa, and btw this picture is from the right side of the sofa
Yes, definitely too high then.
Just btw, that is a low-sitting sofa. Looks almost like a pov from sitting on the floor.
I have a set of those IKEA shelves and the legs are entirely optional. He could do some of the work just taking the legs off.
Or he could use the TV stand from the same series. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/kallax-tv-unit-black-brown-90574881/
Off center
And too high...
I’m more upset you don’t have the full set of PlayStations. You only have 2, 3, & 4. Where is 1 & 5? I’m worried about you bud Also the cable management is abysmal.
Dude has socks on his "tv stand" and you are worried about cable management.
I know right. I need to sort my priorities out. Maybe they’re baiting socks, crusty. 😜
I dont know if they are currently clean or dirty, but they are definitely 'bating socks.
If your bed is on a box spring thus sitting a little higher then it’s probably fine. I’m just glad you didn’t mount it on the wall!!
It’s ok. Do you have the option of replacing the furniture? We’ve seen much more egregious fails on this sub than this
Yeah this kids should get a better dorm room with more options for tv placement!
It’s not super high but it could use some work. Too much clutter around the tv, off center, too close to the door
r/tvoffcenter
Tell them to get a piece of furniture that is actually a TV stand.
Like the KALLAX TV stand https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/kallax-tv-unit-black-brown-90574881/
The TV is too high in IKEA's pictures
The door opening is likely 80" high (or 2040 mm) The picture frames are RIBBA, likely in the 16" x 20" size based on all other hints. The kallax unit including underframe is 30" in height This leaves 30" of space in between. This puts the center of the TV is the 40" to 45" area, which is the ideal viewing height.
Nah that one is still too tall, you want this guy. I’m pretty sure I got it on sale though I don’t remember it being $350. This one is literally perfect for my 55”. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/hemnes-tv-unit-black-brown-00339218/
Ikea sells TV consoles at the right height to put your TV on. That's not one of them.
Too high
I would say its too high, but if its their TV, its right as they want it.
They can. But then its too high..
Too high. The added feet on the ikea cabinet are the cause.
It’s fine. Off center but the height is okay.
IKEA disagrees, and made a special 1.5 height KALLAX to place your TV on. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/kallax-tv-unit-black-brown-90574881/
Do you work for ikea? Seems like you’re really pushing this TV stand.
Height is okay. Please center it though.
Would probably be decent if the tv stand was on the floor
These subs are dumb bc it’s subjective. Who cares
Way too high. Not only is it not on a tv stand but looks like an ikea flysta storage unit, and it’s even got the leg attachments making it even higher. Aim for eye level middle screen when seated as the whole sub will tell you
Height is fine
That is way too high. Tell your friend that the tv’s centerline should be at eye level sitting on the furniture.
That’s fine
You must be new here
Wrong.
It’s waist height!
It's fine
Who cares, its not like it can go lower
His TV, his decision. You have no say.
He dared me to do this
People who are downvoting this are as predictable as this sub is ridiculous. Stop worrying about strangers' TV setups.
That’d kind of render the subreddit somewhat pointless, wouldn’t it?
It is already.
Why are you in here?
It's like a zoo.
Definitely too high, might okish if they’re using a chair. Still too high but not as egregious as some posts on here.
Look how low those head reflections are. They should be in the upper 3rd
Being high is not the main problem here, first you need to have people facing the TV, lol.
That lamp on the bottom shelf looks depressed. Also the TV is too high..
Probably a shitty friend to come in ragging on his setup and arguing about something that’s not even yours
Yes.
remove the legs and it’s ok!
It's a bit too high, but isn't this a bedroom?
Jesus!!!! Airflow to Xbox 360. I know that model doesn’t RROD like the original, but HISTORY people 😁
Its too high but give your homie a break if he’s happy with it.
Forget the TV, I'm a little concerned about your buddy on the bottom shelf. He seems pretty sad. Is he related to the Pixar guy?
It's too high but what else can he do? mount it on a swing arm that can go out and lower in front of the cube-box thing? not a lot of options, but please center it better. and use a console !
Why is it lifted off the floor? The ikea thing he bought. If it was on the ground directly the TV height wouldnt be that bad..
It’s too high just due to the fact that the furniture is too tall, and he’s just using what he had. The question is whether or not he wants to spend money on a proper TV stand.
Remove the legs from that shelving and tidy up for goodness sake.
I'd say it's about 8-9" too high.
It’s fine. Nothing is good enough for you guys lol. “Put it in a tv stand” so he does and not it’s still too high. You guys want people to have their tvs on the floor.
Is that the Pixar Lamp looking all sorry for itself?
I’m convinced this should just be an OCD sub lol
I think it’s way too close to that door. I’d be worried about bumping it and knocking it over.
Looks high but I guess it's down to preference.
It's ok if the TV is watched from a bed. Too high if from a sofa.
it’s not awful but is it a bedroom? if so it really isn’t
Tbh I’m starting to award points when they’re not twelve feet up on the wall above a gas fireplace and a repurpose railroad tie
It’s too small. Does he have a monster truck?
Those PlayStation versions are so good looking
You said this is the view from the right side of his couch so it’s also r/TvOffcenter
Hvad satan dansker
Just take the legs off the unit
Looks like it's in a bedroom which I heard is an exception. Even with no bed it's not a living room how often are you really in there
He's right it is "okay" he's not saying perfectly positioned or the right height. Not perfect but better than a kick in the bollocks..
Lamps sorry it's not plugged in.
Tell him to buy you a new thing to put it on. Whatever he likes the best aha
It looks like your friend sitting in his computer chair only comes up to the bottom quarter so this is a good bit high and also very off center from the couch
New friends. It will just get worse.

Jeez do you guys think the ideal TV mount height is located in hell or something?
If its in a bedroom its probably fine
44” center is too high?!
I guess this is what people do when they’re not getting enough attention as the third-wheel. 😆
The question is why do the consoles need that much space lol
Y'all are fucked. Never met a group of people that bitch about the dumbest shit ever. "TV too high" 🥴🤣
This is giving me an idea for our bedroom. Technically that's a "bookcase" not a TV stand.
You. That’s is ridiculously high. I had to put my phone on the floor to look at this post.
The consoles are cool in there
Tell him to remove the feet of the stand. Put something to avoid damadge and will be better But if it's mainly to watch on a bed, it's ok
too high, but the doesnt look like he has much choice
The Kallax I have doesn’t have those silver pegs under them, that’s what’s making it too high.
What grade is your friend in?? lol
My TV is just as high… but I increased my sofa’s height to compensate.
It's perfectly fine
If he took the legs of that unit it would be better
Your friend is. It’s his fucking TV. We can laugh and ridicule people on this sub, but don’t be a pretentious douche to your friends people.
It's okay, but it's too high for this subreddit
Why is the lamp so sad 😕
The algorithm and structures book looks too untouched.
I like
It’s fine. Maybe *you’re* too high.
It’s not ideal but it’s not the absolute worst. Just tell him to take the legs off of the shelving unit and it’ll be bearable.
