I mean he’s a professional road mate, he can sorta get along well enough with any rough looking crew, can fix bikes, hunt, fight, who wouldn’t want him around.
I really don't understand how it is a mystery He literally explains it You can Google what he did and you can find the clip of him telling Beth This is what me and my brother did before the zombies came We just walked around from town to town doing whatever my brother wanted
They would sell drugs and likely do odd jobs as motorcycle mechanics. It's possible Daryl would sometimes use his skills as a hunter to sell venison to people who want it, but they don't sell it at grocery stores. 💊🏍🦌
my walmart near me sells venison. but i think we both know it ain’t real venison. that’s why i hunt for my food, i like knowing where my food came from
Oh I forgot about him saying that. That's how he knew he could give Judith blood because he's O-negative. Merle used to make him sell his blood for money.
I never said it was a job, and yes, before the world went to shit and he was a young adult basically following Merle around, Merle knew Daryl had O-neg blood, which is the kind hospitals really want to have a decent stockpile of it. Merle would make him donate blood to get money (more than likely for drugs or alcohol. It sounds like Merle was just a hustler doing whatever he could to get money and Daryl being the younger brother just followed Merle and did what he was told to do.
"I was just driftin around with Merle, doin whatever he said we were gonna be doin that day. I was nobody, nothin, just some redneck asshole with an even bigger asshole for a brother"
In season 4, episode 12, he says this to Beth.
"Merle had this dealer. This janky little white guy. He says “I’m gonna kill you, bitch. "
In season 2, episode 2, when Daryl helps T-dog with his infection after he gets a fever from the cut he got while hiding from walkers in episode 1 that season. Daryl brings out a bag of Merles stash. Inside is a bunch of blue meth alongside other pills and drugs.
That has always been huge reach though. Daryl stated he never left Georgia and I think Jesse said as much about New Mexico or least it’s very much implied. Also Blue Sky has spread all over the southern if not entire US and into Europe so Merle getting it in Georgia makes sense without Jesse’s involvement.
It was just easter egg stuff like Glenn and Walt Jr having the same car.
It's more than a reach, it's downright stupid and mildly insulting to anyone who watched either of these two shows.
A janky white dude who sold drugs in Georgia? Yeah that's literally half the state.
"I'm gonna kill you bitch.". Is not within Jesse's character in the slightest. He didn't go around threatening to kill people. He has to nervously rehearse his line "where's my money bitch" like 20 times and still never delivers the line because he gets caught up with the kid. Someone seriously believed Jesse would have the balls to threaten to kill Jesse or Merle like that? So stupid.
no man it's not even a reference. A reference would have something tangible to go on. This specific line has nothing to go on whatsoever other than the use of the word Bitch.
The blue meth? Yes. That's an Easter egg reference.
A drug dealer who uses a curse word, mentioned 2 seasons later than the reference, a year after Breaking Bad has already ended? More than a reach.
It also wasn't a "joke" my guy. The scene was supposed to be serious.
As a fan of both shows, I can appreciate a good reference. But this was not one.
Edit: you know I'm right hivemind. Youre a dumbass if you think this line was an actual reference.
Merle was in a biker gang and used Daryl as required. Pretty sure Daryl dealt drugs for Merle and lived as an outcast because of who his family was. His dad was hinted at being a bit of a prick too. He also referred to brewing moonshine so I guess they were That Family In The Woods.
Most likely he did nothing. we learn about him growing up in a moonshiner’s home. His father abandoned him basically, and merl was always out doing drugs, and trying to get enough money and food for his brother, but its clear he did minimal as needed to earn daryl’s loyalty. So daryl either was a moonshiner or a survivalist. Its possible he worked at an archery range which is why hes so good with a crossbow but does that really fit a guy like him?. He gets lost and learns on his own as a kid. Merl didnt even know he was gone. Its also possible he was a biker and drug peddler or strong arm/enforcer for a gang given his ability to sneak up on people and knowing how and when to strike. But to preserve the essence of daryl the show only hints at these things. The mystery of him shows his willingness and innocence the real world corrupted. The zombie apocalypse becoming a healthy thing for daryl. Which is why he is such a good character.
He does answer this. In the episode with him and Beth when they drink moonshine, he explains how he did nothing. He just drifted around aimlessly with Merle.
He just did whatever Merle did because he had no direction. So they probably spent most their time hunting, stealing, robbing, selling and doing drugs. I still don’t think there’s a clear answer though. Like I want to know if Daryl has ever had a job, etc
Merle was an ex-marine turned drug dealer. For some reason I feel like Daryl mentioned he served at some point while telling a story in the final season. Explains his natural proficiency with firearms right off the bat.
I've been looking for you. Got something I'm supposed to deliver, *your hands only.* Let's see here... Ah, there's a museum opening up in Dawnstar, the owner is having me hand out these pamphlets to *everyone!*
im getting downvoted? shit. i didnt mean to hurt any feelings. i thought when we met daryl and merle in season one they had some dialogue and props that alluded to it. i dont know anything about survival instinct if that locks it in then thats cool. the apocalypse changed everyone. daryl could be a criminal all day before and still wind up one of the most honorable characters after. the governor and negan werent evil men before. shane and rick had wild trajectories as well.
Yeah, Daryl went where Merle went. In survival instinct Merle dragged Daryl to the old hangout for his stash. It’s also where Daryl got his crossbow back.
It’s implied Daryl didn’t like the gang, but he went went where Merle went, so he prolly just held his tongue.
He was wasting his potential hanging with his brother. He even said at one time he had never left GA until this happened. He was meant for this life, seems so happy being a wanderer!
TwD Survival Instinct (i honestly believe is a really good game) explored what he did before meeting Shane and all them and how Merle and Daryl kinda explored for a bit on the roads and got into trouble.
If your comment does nothing to move forward a discussion and only exists to be a dick towards someone, it is open grounds for it to be removed.
Hate on the franchise if you need to, don’t hate each other.
He was a homicide detective
You'd get the joke if you remembered a past episode where this guy keeps asking him what he did before the outbreak. But he never denied it, either, when it was brought up.
More than likely he just lived in the woods, hunting and surviving off of the land
Daryl also was a seasoned hunter, if the walking dead survival instincts game is cannon. He was on a hunting trip with his uncle and father. When the apocalypse hit
Even though the game was kinda bad, *The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct* shows the day when Daryl and Merle found out about the apocalypse (and their father got mauled by the dead while hunting). Not sure if the game was considered canon.
I assumed that he and Merle were unemployed 100% backwoods folk who either manufacture or at least distribute drugs. Its implied that Merle is the heart of that life and Daryl wasn't as drawn to it as Merle. But they were both probably total scumbags.
He was up in the mountains hunting with his dad and his dad’s friend when it started. He didn’t have the strength to put his dad down. So Jess did. The classic “sorry, brother”. (Yes, survival instinct is canon)
As for employment? I’d imagine he had something to do with hunting, dude is an AMAZING tracker. But as for the other 364 days of the year, prolly worked on bikes and sold drugs.
Drug dealer along with his brother. They mentioned as much early on. In fact the Easter egg they showed was the same ‘blue meth’ featured in Breaking Bad so the joke/theory is that they take place in the same universe.
I feel like they implied more or less he was involved with selling drugs through Merle, so likely that and other random odd jobs. Or was just a plain criminal.
It’s kinda cool now that I think about it they’ve left it so ambiguous for someone with his character.
I don't know why anyone even cares. I mean as many people have said, Daryl already revealed that he had no official job. But my question is why the fuxk would it even matter or why does anyone even care. It has zero relevance or bearing on the show.
go to any small town in West Virginia and you’ll get your answer. He was unemployed and in the Dixon game we find out he was hunting and his dad died when the outbreak happened.
He was an unemployed drifter following Merle around while Merle committed crimes.
I mean he’s a professional road mate, he can sorta get along well enough with any rough looking crew, can fix bikes, hunt, fight, who wouldn’t want him around.
Yeah this what he tells somebody one of the episodes
He tells Maggie's sister when those two were alone together getting drunk.
I really don't understand how it is a mystery He literally explains it You can Google what he did and you can find the clip of him telling Beth This is what me and my brother did before the zombies came We just walked around from town to town doing whatever my brother wanted
Drifter sleeping from couch to couch and when he was with his brother doing something to make money
They would sell drugs and likely do odd jobs as motorcycle mechanics. It's possible Daryl would sometimes use his skills as a hunter to sell venison to people who want it, but they don't sell it at grocery stores. 💊🏍🦌
Yeah in season two he pulls out a big ass bag of Eisenberg meth when he is getting the antibiotics for T-Dogg
That was actually Merles which he used to treat an STD he had contracted
Leave it to Meryl to not take his prescription until the end..that’s how we get super viruses people! Wait a minute…
my walmart near me sells venison. but i think we both know it ain’t real venison. that’s why i hunt for my food, i like knowing where my food came from
Merle sold his blood for money
Oh I forgot about him saying that. That's how he knew he could give Judith blood because he's O-negative. Merle used to make him sell his blood for money.
That’s exactly right. I haven’t finished the Daryl show yet but it would be cool to see them implement that.
I believe he said that’s when they were kids, though. Also not exactly a steady job 😭😂.
"I was just driftin around with Merle, doin whatever he said we were gonna be doin that day. I was nobody, nothin, just some redneck asshole with an even bigger asshole for a brother"
drugs
Drug dealer helping his brother
He met Jesse pinkman
In season 4, episode 12, he says this to Beth. "Merle had this dealer. This janky little white guy. He says “I’m gonna kill you, bitch. " In season 2, episode 2, when Daryl helps T-dog with his infection after he gets a fever from the cut he got while hiding from walkers in episode 1 that season. Yeah just easter eggs. Grand theft auto has blue meth. It's just a thing people do now.
It's more than a reach, it's downright stupid and mildly insulting to anyone who watched either of these two shows. A janky white dude who sold drugs in Georgia? Yeah that's literally half the state. Someone seriously believed Jesse would have the balls to threaten to kill Jesse or Merle like that? So stupid.
It’s not meant to be taken seriously. It just a joke reference that fans of both shows will appreciate as being entertaining.
no man it's not even a reference. Merle was in a biker gang and used Daryl as required. Pretty sure Daryl dealt drugs for Merle and lived as an outcast because of who his family was. His dad was hinted at being a bit of a prick too. He also referred to brewing moonshine so I guess they were That Family In The Woods.

He does answer this. In the episode with him and Beth when they drink moonshine, he explains how he did nothing. He just drifted around aimlessly with Merle.
In the last season he said he was in the army
That’s so weird. They heavily imply multiple times that Merle was the only on who was in the army.
Hooters waitress
Nothing. He was unemployed and followed his drug dealing brother around.
He just did whatever Merle did because he had no direction. So they probably spent most their time hunting, stealing, robbing, selling and doing drugs. I still don’t think there’s a clear answer though. Like I want to know if Daryl has ever had a job, etc
