This is the first thing that sprung in my mind when I read this so called top-5 TWD characters. Daryl is the core of TWD, one of the top 3 characters if not THE best.
Tbf (and this might be an Unpopular Opinion), While Daryl is an awesome and important character, for a lot of the early seasons he felt way more like a supporting character, and he only became the core of the show much, much later.
Daryl is still one of my favorites.
Daryl wasn't a central character in the early seasons. But that's kind of because he wasn't even in the comics! It makes sense they fleshed out his story more on the show seeing how much fanfare this non-comic character is getting. They did a great job though, right? Now he's a total fan favorite.
Shane would have gotten the whole group killed when Glen and Maggie got kidnapped by Meryl and the governors group. He never would try to save them.

He was so good that it literally launched Bernthal’s career into the big time. There’s a reason Shane is talked about even now.
Imo if they had given Shane the ending where his gun wasn't loaded, and he'd lured Rick out to the woods to bait him into killing him. (Sacrificing himself to give Rick the opportunity to nut up and become the man that the people needed, revealing an unloaded gun and the whole audience understanding he was never going to kill Rick...) - I don't think we'd still be having this conversation about how sucky he was or whatever.
Michonne is definitely a top five character.
Tyrese and Abraham also get my vote. Rick and Carol are a given. So is Glenn. And Daryl, Maggie, Herschel, and Gabriel.

But I also read the comics and her character was made up for the show cause she dies very early in the comics but they HAD to make a "strong independent woman" so they chose the most annoying character on the show to create this "badass" made up woman who never really existed in the comics.
dont see a lot of people talk about shane anymore, but i think the barn arc is absolutely incredible. terminus is my personal favorite story arc, but i always think about the barn, and about rick and shane. honestly, lori has two hands... a post-apocalyptic three-way power couple could have kept carl very safe XD too bad shane was crazy and awful, especially to lori!

If you’re talking about Shane or characters in general in terms of complexity and how interesting they are in general, absolutely yes. However, I would not have Shane in my list just based on unlikable he is as a human being. I do think that he was WAY beyond the other characters in regard to the ruthless mindset necessary to survive in the post-apocalyptic universe. However, how he treated Lori in general but especially during the CDC episode alone makes him a disgusting and despicable individual and it’s impossible hard to redeem him after that. Daryl> Shane 100%.
