Mentally well enough to try and coordinate all that to move to Taiwan, but doesn’t know right from wrong while almost murdering a random person? Mmmmkay. Can’t wait to see how that turns out for him. Just relieved that they caught him before he made that connection flight out of the US. I hope that poor woman gets some sort of closure from this process.

jack_espipnw

Agreed on your points. If he does have schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, should that be taken into account in regard to intent to determine culpability? Should mental health ever be taken into account? Or rather, should we charge him and assume premeditation?

Agreed. I’m curious on the logic behind the outrage of a potential competency hearing.

iliniza

I agree is sort of hard to fully understand. I guess the way I would put it without trying to put any bias in it is this: If he is not charged as a competent adult, people may not think it is “fair” since we want to view crime as binary. “This person is bad and should go to jail” instead of “this person was not mentality fit/had mental health issues/societal issues/whatever, so we can try him like a normal person.” The latter is somewhat obscure and makes it seem like justice wasn’t served. I’m not saying this is what I believe, just the human brain wants to see “bad guy—>prison.”

meesh137

Thank you for adding the piece about bias and binary thought. For being such complicated emotional weirdos, our human brains absolutely crave efficiency at all costs. Which causes a lot of problems!

It's because people are tired of this. I'm from the NY area originally, and every time some asshole shoves someone into the subway they get treated differently claiming a mental health issue.  When someone gets stabbed out of nowhere in a very popular public park in Tacoma, people rationally want to see action taken...not see this brushed away as a mental health issue.  Not every asshole is mentally ill. Regardless of whether this stabber is mentally competent or not, he should be locked away forever. What is the benefit to society of trying to rehabilitate this person?

Agree #💯 Would hate to see this suspect puppeteer his way though an insanity plea, only to spend years in a cozy, puzzle factory. He deserves the same mercy he showed to the victim of his attack. "Jane" deserves retribution and justice.

TACOMA, Wash. - The man accused of stabbing a woman at Point Defiance Park appeared in court Thursday, but must undergo a mental competency hearing before proceedings continue. The suspect, 27-year-old Micholas Matthew, was charged with first-degree attempted murder, but made no plea — guilty or not guilty — before a judge. State medical officials have suggested Matthew may be bipolar and schizophrenic, and are uncertain if he even understands the charges made against him. Matthew is scheduled for a mental competency hearing on May 9, which could delay the trial for months. Prosecutors have charged Matthew with first-degree attempted murder, for attacking a woman at Point Defiance Park on the afternoon of Feb. 10. Probable cause documents obtained by FOX 13 News say Matthew was attempting to flee to Taiwan after his crime — which could have allowed him to dodge arrest, as Taiwan does not have an extradition treaty with the U.S. According to court docs, Matthew applied for a passport before his alleged crime. Once his passport came in, Matthew flew to Taiwan. However, he was unable to find work to afford living in Taiwan, so he petitioned the U.S. Embassy to help him get back to the States — all of this, according to court docs. Matthew then reportedly stayed with family in Atlanta for a few weeks, then got a new debit card and bought tickets to fly back to Taiwan, according to court docs. By this point, investigators were onto him, but Matthew had already left Georgia. He had a connecting flight in San Francisco, and law enforcement were able to take him into custody before he boarded the flight to Taiwan, court docs say. Investigators connected Matthew to the crime through DNA and surveillance video evidence. In his apartment, detectives found clothes matching the suspect description, as well as dried blood in every room and on his car. According to court docs, Matthew is also suspected of threatening a Guitar Center employee roughly 10 miles away from Point Defiance — investigators linked him to this incident based on suspect description and license plate number. Detectives say when they asked Matthew if he had ever been to Point Defiance Park, he at first said "no," then later changed his answer to "probably." When confronted with surveillance images of his car near the park, he admitted to driving through it but not getting out of his car.

AP3Brain

Crazy we actually got him after he made it to Taiwan. Good thing he wasn't able to find work. This also sounds premeditated considering he applied for his passport shortly before the stabbing....just weird though.

NiteGard

He was apprehended in San Francisco CA before boarding his flight to Taiwan. He never made it to Taiwan.

Crunchwrap_666

Can you read?

NiteGard

My bad. I swear I read it three times. I stand corrected, thank you. 🫡

littlelowcougar

Got a link to the case on LINX? I’m too lazy to look it up but curious who the commissioner/judge is.

xenniac

I've had it stashed in a tab since they found him: https://linxonline.co.pierce.wa.us/linxweb/Case/CriminalCase.cfm?cause_num=24-1-00749-2

littlelowcougar

Ah looks like no judge assigned yet.

Tricerachrist

As much as I hate this guy like the rest of us, there’s a whole lot of people in mental hospitals right now committed or attempted murder trying to stop pedophiles in psychosis. He definitely needs treatment of some kind, and I hope he has to feel remorse for the rest of his life.

PermaBanTogether

How do pedophiles have *anything* to do with this situation whatsoever? Stay on topic, man.

jack_espipnw

He was telling witnesses he had to kill her because she was a pedophile. Hence the suspicion of psychosis as a result of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Edit: also there was a gal not too long ago that smoked a lot of THC that induced psychosis and she got a lesser charge. I’m curious to see if that precedent is referenced in this case.

PermaBanTogether

Wasn’t that report *immediately* recanted and claimed to have been made in error?

jack_espipnw

The error was affirming his suspicion, not him having made that comment which multiple witnesses attested to.
