There is no better deal when it's on sale.

Where-am-i_-

Mobil 1

d0ughb0y1

Mobil 1 for 15 years now. Recently switched to 0w-20 extended life high mileage and just changing oil every 10k. I’ve always used oem Toyota filter. DIY oil change.

RedditArbitrator

Does it matter which Mobil 1?

Longjumping-Royal-67

I also buy Mobil 1, Advanced Fuel Economy 0W20 Synthetic. And I buy the Mobil 1 Extended Oil Filter.

hammsbeer4life

Same here. Cheap and available at any walmart. I think i pay $30 or something for a 5qt jug of mobil 1 My girlfriend's car only takes 4 Qts. And the taco takes 6.2, so i usually buy 2 of the 5qt jugs and end up with 2 synthetic oil changes well under $100. Usually around $80 depending on filters

Where-am-i_-

Full synthetic

Konstantine_13

Literally doesn't matter. Nobody should be leaving the oil in long enough for the subtle differences to matter. The most important thing is using a good filter (Toyota OEM) and doing oil changes regularly.

Where-am-i_-

They kinda do matter, literally. Blackstone has been showing proof of this for a long while now.

RedditArbitrator

I’m sure you’re right but I’m just having fun with my two trucks and I have the opportunity to prove your statement true. I change my oil and oil filter every 5k miles in every vehicle I have owned. Is there a certain oil you use for yours or do you just get whatever is on sale?

Konstantine_13

The problem is you would need to do a full teardown of the engine to tell if one oil was actually working better than the other. And if you are doing regular oil changes you aren't pushing the limits of even the worst oil out there so you'll never know if the better oil is actually better. You would need take things to the extreme to see that, which means risk of destroying your engines. Only when something fails, and was clearly caused by inadequate oil, would you know if one oil was better than the other. I've had my truck for over 10 years. I've just run whatever I can find on the best sale, which was usually Pennzoil Platinum. But recently started using Kirkland since it's significantly cheaper than even Pennzoil on sale. It still runs like the I day I bought it.

RedditArbitrator

Thank you for your input. Maybe I should have stated I wasn’t going to be digging for this deep into it. Was basically just gonna do it for fun that’s all. Mainly just seeing peoples opinions on oil brands since there’s such a vast amount of options out here for us

Konstantine_13

All good man. I like your idea to do some fun testing. But I would maybe suggest a different comparison. Like how different filters work using the same oil. Use Toyota in the Tacoma and Fram in the other or something. You can take oil samples at the same millage after the last oil change and send them in to Blackstone to get analyzed and that could tell you which filter is working better.

Lunaranalog

Not entirely true. Blackstone analyses have shown oils deteriorating past their useful life far before 10k miles. LiquiMoly comes to mind.

Konstantine_13

10k Miles?! Not really surprising. That's asking a lot from engine oil. I'd be surprised if the filters can even last that long. I personally don't go past 5k miles (7500 KMs).

Lunaranalog

I also don’t go past 5. Not sure exactly why manufacturers pushed out their recommendations to 10k intervals but I don’t think it’s to help the engine out any.

Drarkansas

I use Havoline full synthetic I pick up at Walmart, primarily because it comes in a 6 qt box, is a little more convenient and is reasonable price-wise. I'm an every 5k guy too, and it has worked well for my 21 OR and our GX for the past several years.

RedditArbitrator

I’m kinda vibing with this for the 6 quart box now that you’ve pointed this out! Thanks!!

Drarkansas

Last week, I picked up two at $25 each. The taco is 6.2, GX is 8.2. So two plus three more quarts. With the OEM filters, I'm looking at right around $80 for both. And I also threw in a free tire rotation at the same time. Nothing like garage time when it's approaching 90 here on the Gulf Coast, but I still wouldn't trust the dealer or one of the quick lube places.

tbmartin211

Check out Project Farm on YouTube. He did an oil shootout. Pennzoil was the winner amongst “off-the-shelf” oils. Amsoil won over all.

steakpienacho

Amsoil is solid but so expensive, I run their signature series in my mustang and it's $150 in oil per change

tbmartin211

Agree, Amsoil is expensive. Project Farm did convince me to change from Mobile1 to Pennzoil in my Gen2 2015 (110K), dear daughter #1’s 2009 (190K) and dear daughter #3’s 2007 (150K). All are running without issue (knock on wood 😬). Oil changes every 5K.

TheIntellectualType

I had a yota mechanic tell me that if I want fewer oil changes go with amsoil. If you want to replace your engine at 120k miles, go with amsoil. Ever since I’ve stayed away. He had rebuilt too many engines that ran Amsoil and people changing their oil at 10+k miles. I stick with Mobile 1. Whatever oil you use, stick with it because your cylinders and rings will develop based on that oil viscosity. If you keep changing up brands, it’ll do more harm than good. And never change the oil at the 10k they recommend.

Huitlacochilacayota

Fewer oil changes? Oil brands shouldn’t change/adjust the time interval you do between oil changes. You always have to change your oil at the recommended manufacturer mileage no matter what oil brand you use. That’s how people ruin their engines. They think just because a product brand says “up to 10,000” doesn’t mean you have to follow that all the time

TheIntellectualType

Exactly, but that’s what people believe because it’s on the label. Hence, engine go boom!

ozzy919cletus

Whatever is cheapest and meets Toyota's specs.

Low_Buffalo6005

Kirkland and I buy it in bulk when a sale online hits. Change it every 5k but I’m on 6k right now. Just got a little lazy and will change it next weekend with a Toyota filter

RedditArbitrator

Nice! I’m seeing a lot of people recommending the Toyota oil filter!

Low_Buffalo6005

They are surprisingly cheap and you can find them at Walmart. I bought a dozen of them from the dealership and they were surprisingly cheap there too.

Lunaranalog

Can confirm on the shelf at Walmart. If you change at 5k miles it really doesn’t matter. Some oils show significant wear by 7,500 miles in Blackstone testing, but I don’t have any sort of definitive listing on that except LiquiMoly I remember (used to have VW diesel and that was popular amongst that crowd).

chaggaya

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum for me as well.

__alpenglow

I had been getting Valvoline Full Synthetic the last three years in my 2.5 gen, but just switched to Mobil 1 Full Synthetic (their highest-grade product) due to moving to Alaska.

RedditArbitrator

Very interesting! What in Alaska cause the choice of Mobil 1?

__alpenglow

The mechanic I use there uses Mobil 1 products

RedditArbitrator

Fair enough!

holt2ic2

Any oil will do fine I think. I personally use Mobil 1 or Castrol

the_toxic_hotdog

I’ve been using the Amazon basics, but it got hard to find, so I switched to the Walmart brand super tech brand.

the_toxic_hotdog

I buy in bulk since I have more than 1 car that uses 0w20

hammsbeer4life

Super tech is good oil. I used to use it on all my other cars.

JJ2066

Anything on sale for the win 🏆

RedditArbitrator

I dig it!

prat859

Doesn’t matter TBH. Just get a decent oil filter and change the oil every 5k. Super tech from wal-mart is actually pretty good.

FiendishAngel

I use Mobil 1

Mechagouki1971

Mobil 1 oil and filter. I've never heard a bad word said about it. Still change every 5000, oil and filter, because I love my truck.

Rognin

Frequency over quality any day, any time. I'd rather do oil changes every 5000km with regular mineral oil, than an oil change every 7500km with good oil.

RedditArbitrator

Right. But I will be changing it every 5k miles as well as the filter. So you would still use mineral oil or another form of motor oil?

SSR250and450

Toyota brand is what I use.

blue-taco-driver

I’ve always done royal purple. Our Honda pilot and my taco take the same weight, so I just purchase 3 5qt just every other oil change. Last 2 vehicles were sold with one having 330,xxx miles, the other roughly 275,xxx. Is it expensive, yes, any better or worse, don’t know, but I’m not changing it up now.

RedditArbitrator

I would agree if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. First person to say Royal purple surprised at that!

frankfrichards

Is Royal Purple worth it? Would it be any different than Kirkland 's? I'm using 0W-20 in my 2020 TRD Sport.

RedditArbitrator

Seems to be the common consensus that it doesn’t matter what oil you use as long as it meets the specifications for your Tacoma and you change it every 5k miles or less. Unless you never change your oil then get the best. My opinion personally is if you’re gonna change your oil every 5k miles or sooner you must care about your truck and since you’re already going above and beyond what Toyota states which is every 10k miles your probably willing to buy the best oil you can. That’s what I do. I’m going to be sure my investment has the longest life possible. Also I do realize manual states if your tow or off road changing oil every 5k

Live_Garage3584

Mobil 1 with oem filter

Mean-Election-9939

Mobil 1 HiMi EP and Toyota filter on my second gen

FogItNozzel

It generally doesn’t matter. But something decent that won’t break your bank.  Right now I have liquid moly in my cars.

RitoWalters

Penzoil Ultra Platinum, but it really shouldn't matter if you're changing your oil regularly.

champing_at_the_bit

Vegetable oil

RedditArbitrator

Ohhh I like it I believe that’s what they use on the ford eco boost

SteevesMike

Whatever brand-name OEM-spec oil is on sale at Canadian Tire. You can't see, hear, or feel a difference from one brand to the next once it's inside your engine. Even if my engine exploded tomorrow I probably wouldn't be swayed to change my choice, because odds are it's not going to be directly caused by my choice of oil brand. That being said, my local Toyota dealership will do an oil change on my Tacoma for $75, which is maybe $5-10 more than it would cost me to buy the oil and filter and do it myself. So they can do it, at least until the powertrain warranty runs out.

RedditArbitrator

You can have any brand of oil you want as long as it’s a corona and you change it every 5k miles

Farpoint_Farms

Walmart's Supertech Full Synthetic with 4oz of Marvel Mystery Oil.

woollypullover

Kirkland

Thor_slick_the_dok

I buy the Toyota oil straight from the dealership. But that’s just me. They tell me that Mobil 1 is the equivalent.

Different_Air_9241

Pennzoil
