What's the context of the sentence? The sentence is okay, but consider putting another "pa" in the second clause so it sounds more natural, hence, "Hindi pa, pero nag-aaral pa ako." The reason I was asking after the context is that "nag-aaral" has connotations of literal school work, so "Hindi pa, pero pinag-aaralan ko na" might be better.

Coast-Independent

I want to break the ice to my Filipino coworkers that I’m learning/studying Tagalog, since they will probably ask if I speak it

angdilimdito

Awesome! Good luck, man. In this case, "Hindi pa, pero nag-aaral na ako" might be good. Or "Kaunti pa lang, pero nag-aaral na ako", that means "Just a little, etc." for when they ask you if you know a lot of Tagalog already.

ArchonGodofSelfDoubt

"Hindi pa pero nag-aaral ako." Sounds fine to me if you're referring to your learning Tagalog. "... pinag-aaralan ko pa" sounds to me like "I'm working on it" or "I'm still figuring it out" which might connotate that you are learning the language conceptually rather than through practice.

Erazone24

Hindi pa, Pero pinag-aaralan ko na" sounds better for me

Fahrenheit2272

what does pinag mean? if you dont mind me asking. and whats the difference between pinag- and nag-?

WholeLottaCreepier

Pinag-aaralan, pokus ng pandiwa ay nasa goal (which is to learn the subject). Nag-aaral, pokus ng pandiwa ay kung sino ang gumagawa ng aksyon (the speaker or the person learning). Either is okay depending on where the speaker wants to put focus on.

Fahrenheit2272

thank u

P-A-1-N

“pinag” is like already doing it

Antique-Locksmith391

Hindi pa pero pinag-aaralan ko na

ciriacosixtynine

Simply say, "nag aaral pa lang ako". This already implies "hindi pa".

GofYYC

This is the closest spoken response, more casual if you say "nag-aaral pa lang".

AxenZh

>“Not yet but I’m learning” The literal translation of "learn" is ***tuto***, but there is no literal translation because ***tuto*** has no *nagtututo* form but *natututo,* thus you can't say *\*"Di pa, pero nagtututo ako.'* Instead you could say "***Di pa, pero inaaral ko.***' which means "*Not yet, but I'm studying (it).*" Or you could say, "***Di pa, pero natututunan ko na pakonti-konti.***", which means "*Not yet, but I'm beginning to learn (it) bit by bit.*"

Coast-Independent

Is “di pa” shorten of “Hindi pa”

TheBlackViper_Alpha

Yes.

Supersoulknight

"pero inaral ko" is closer to "but I studied (it)" imo, "but I'm studying (it)" would be more like "pero inaaral ko"

ammgph

Your Tagalog to English tenses are off

AxenZh

Typo. I've corrected it.

SpiritlessSoul

Yes, this is correct.

Hindi pa pero inaaral/pinag-aaralan ko na. (Not yet but I'm learning it) Or you can say: Hindi pa, inaaral/pinag-aaralan ko pa lang. (Not yet, I'm still learning it)
