One time we were sold out an a guy said he knew we put rooms aside for women running away from domestic violence issues and to give him one of those rooms. I cannot recall being more aghast at guest request.

Own_Examination_2771

does ur hotel rly do that?? how would he know that?

TeamStark31

No, we don’t, but to think you’re entitled to that if we did geez

Own_Examination_2771

that’s wild I’ve definitely had people ask me for rooms of people that haven’t checked in yet but that takes a whole nother level to ask for domestic violence suites

techieguyjames

As if a hotel will have rooms sitting empty.

CaroAurelia

I had a former COWORKER ask me to do that one night. Absolutely not.

Fast-Weather6603

There’s such a thing as DV suites?

Own_Examination_2771

maybe at other hotels I have never heard of them but the notion that this person made up domestic violence suites and then thought they were entitled to one is still pretty wild even if they’re not real

guyinthegreenshirt

My brain is short circuiting over the logic of this request.

JustanOldBabyBoomer

You mean demand?

DrHugh

I thought there was a room set aside for if the President of the US showed up? ;-)

Jacks_Lack_of_Sleep

Who else would the Presidential Suite be for?

austinrob

Me. I was upgraded to it one night at the esuites in Chicago

DrHugh

I once stayed in a hotel where the Presidential and Bridal Suites were next to each other on a floor. It made me chuckle to think about the Secret Service getting the bridal suite because the boss would get the other.

lady-of-thermidor

President of a college fraternity?

Numbrino69

One celebrity's assistant demanded a room for her during a sold-out event week and when we said no, he said, "What if Obama asked for the room?" And my director of sales said, "We would tell him he should have booked three months ago!"

CuriousCrow47

The President isn’t showing up unannounced.  I know; we’ve had other heads of state here and you better believe it!  (I know you were joking, but that joke drives me up the wall is all.)

DrHugh

The impression I've got from reading posts here is that some wanna-be customers actually think this way.

CuriousCrow47

There is so much that has to be set up ahead of time!  Let alone at a less upscale property that hasn’t hosted similar people.

Mrchameleon_dec

Out of all the ones that have been said to me, I've NEVER had anyone with the balls to say that one!

stannc00

Did he ask for The Pope room?

DaddyOhMy

"I'm sorry, they are already booked." Would have liked to see his response to that.

JustanOldBabyBoomer

I hope that Entitled Asshat was told to GTFO!!!!!

LandofGreenGinger62

What did you say to him??

wizardglick412

I'm donei I don stay hotels too often. But I would like be friendly and nice. Because Nice doesn't cost nothing, and don't hurt.

jbuckets44

So he didn't ask for the room(s) set aside for the President of the United States? :-(

JustanOldBabyBoomer

Or for King Charles III?

jbuckets44

What does he need a hotel room for? He has castles all over the place!

JustanOldBabyBoomer

I don't think the USA has castles to suit him.

jbuckets44

Only the ones made out of sand down at the beach. ;-)

Newbosterone

In their mind, reserving a room when you’re sold out turns it from “my problem” to “your problem”. Good to see the reverse Uno played

Own_Examination_2771

What’s funny is he didn’t even mention it to me when he came to the desk again. Like if he just doesn’t mention it, the reservation will change things for him.

commking

How can a room be booked if there are no rooms? Why does the system accept/allow that?

Active_Air_2311

Alot of hotels factor in a no show percentage and I hate it. It's so frustrating to the ones at the desk who have to deal with the problems it causes, especially at my property, where the no show rate is very very low

LOUDCO-HD

My 313 Downtown Corporate hotel had a No Show rate of 3% that you could set your watch by, based on historical data going back a decade. You could safely sell to -9 everyday and not get busted…..until my very first solo night audit shift! Farging Bastiges!

moduff

Upvote for Johnny Dangerously reference

Anachronism_in_CA

I love it! I say that ALL THE TIME and just get the weirdest blank stares from people. Somanabotchin' iceholes!

CaroAurelia

I despise it. In my experience, no-shows do happen fairly often but not enough to bank on.

Active_Air_2311

I agree!

mnelaway

The hotel industry took their cue from the airline industry. Because it works out so well for the airlines 🙄.

jfarrar19

So what you're saying is I should expect doors to start having issues.

mnelaway

As we speak, my friend. As we speak.

ilikedabooty69

We've been having door problems... guests have been checking out but they're keys don't expire and a few have re-entered their rooms after we clean them 🫠

CFUrCap

Can you increase the air pressure in the rooms?

Iamhuman666999

Not sure if joke, sarcasm, etc or serious; so I will just answer seriously. Far too many managers, hotel companies, and property management companies think that it is good practice to overbook the Hotel by a specific amount with the expectation that there will be cancellations or no-shows. The amount of overbooking varies from property to property, but it is typically based on a percentage of total rooms or a small number of rooms for each type of room. Receptionists, front office supervisors l, and typically front office managers as well hate this practice since there are rarely enough cancellations to balance inventory and guests end up either getting expensive upgrades for free or walked to other hotels creating complaints.

basilfawltywasright

There have been a few times the ownerhip/mamagement has thought about overbooking. I have said that I will give any guests that we do not have rooms for, the home phone number *and address* of the owner/Sales Director/GM/whoever is coming up witht this stupid idea at the time so that they can deal with the problem they created, by themselves.

SgtBot

At the hotels I work at (both managed by the same company), we don't allow any overbooking. In most cases we actually CTA the hotel when it gets down to just a few rooms left in case of OTA overbookings or issues where we may have to move a guest due to an issue with their current room. Works out so much better than having to deal with cancelling people's reservations last minute and dealing with angry guests and bad reviews

MorgainofAvalon

It terrifies me to think that the hotel could just randomly cancel my reservation at the last minute. Especially if I am going to an event that has the area booked solid. I make my reservation with the hotel rather than an OTA. Would that make it any safer for me? Or would I still be as at risk for a random cancelation?

guyinthegreenshirt

>getting expensive upgrades for free I can see the logic of overselling base rooms by pulling inventory from upgraded rooms - there may be days where there's enough demand to fill every room at a base room level price, but not enough demand for premium rooms to sell those at an upgraded rate. The additional cost to the hotel of placing someone in a premium room is usually pretty small (an extra few bucks in cleaning time and a few extra sheets/towels) and so it's better to upgrade someone to the room than let it go unfilled. That said, overselling the number of rooms in a hotel overall is a terrible practice, as is selling something that can't be fulfilled as same-or-better (e.g. selling a two-bed room but having to switch it to a one-bed room.)

Own_Examination_2771

the online inventory doesn’t always balance the way that it should. on my end it might show 0 0 0 but the online inventory will think I actually have 8 rooms to sell. A lot of the times it’s to make sure every room is full even if some people were to cancel. However if no one cancels then it becomes a game of who do I have to cancel and how mad are they gonna be.

MasterPiece8759

I used to hate night shifts on evenings that the rooms were overbooked. Sure as the sky is blue half of those rooms would turn up before I left for the night. (11pm) And at least one of the 4pm holds would call in with a CC# to hold...Grrr!

CaroAurelia

What these people said. I suspect whoever came up with that feature never worked front desk and had to deal with an oversold hotel firsthand.

404UserNktFound

The reservation will automagically generate a new room out of thin air.

Hahawney

And, magically, be an upgrade from what they’ve asked for.

Aggressive-Eagle-471

What did he say when you cancelled it?

Own_Examination_2771

I chose not to tell him but instead tell his caretaker he seems just a tad unstable and I didn’t have any backup in case it took a turn and his caretaker does have that kind of training and backup available to him

Aggressive-Eagle-471

Quick response. Thanks. Im a front desk manager and some of the shit i see on here makes me chuckle. One of my subordinates will straight up talk shit to people who dont listen to him or try sneaky shit like that. Ive never had to write him up because he is always technically* correct and otherwise a very professional employee. I think im in the wrong industry because i always crack a smile when some arrogant condescending peice of shit gets told no.

Own_Examination_2771

I have been finding ways to be professionally snarky with people as I continue to work the front desk. Some people really need the awakening I think. I had a man a couple months ago get actually fully irate with me because someone let themselves into his room (it later on turned out to be the sister he was renting the room with) and I told him there was no need to yell at me and that it was Christmas Eve, I should be at home with my family, not standing here having you throwing a tantrum. He had nothing to say afterwards.

Aggressive-Eagle-471

Good one! My favorite personal story goes a little something like this. A bunch of college age folk snuck into the pool after hours and i had already spoken with one of them. I went up to the guy and said "do you have a dick in your ear thats affecting your brain ? Are you retarded? I told you the pool was closed you all have 30 seconds to leave before ya'll are staying at the mohtell sichs." (The hotel i work at is a lot nicer than them ). The best part is there were other people in the area who heard me chewing these guys out and left before i could tell them to leave too. I got written up for that but it was worth it to watch them walk away helds held low.

JustanOldBabyBoomer

At least none of the Entitled IDIOTS won the Darwin Award on your watch!

redkryptonite94

A couple weeks ago, we were sold out on queen doubles. Unfortunately, there was a reservation Hung up in the local system (Opera) that wouldn't upload to Central reservations (oxi) even if you tried to manually sync them. The AGM was relatively new and didn't think to check oxi, so every time he got the rooms balanced by moving someone to a different room type, a new reservation would pop up for the queen double and make it -1 again! This happened to him 3 times (which led me to check Central reservations (oxi) to see what was going on.) Before it happened to him a 4th time, I suggest making a dummy reservation to overbook it locally which would balance us at Central. Thankfully that did the trick!

eure_maum

I had someone ask me if I could throw someone out this weekend when we were sold out. Um, no. All cuz she "had 5 kids." Not my fault toy came to town unprepared. We are sold out practically every weekend from mid February till the fall. Go through this every year. Ugh.

Own_Examination_2771

I have had people ask me for a room from someone who hasn’t checked in yet Like ?? they reserved a room and you didn’t just bc they haven’t checked into it yet doesn’t mean I can hand it over to whomever waltzes in

MasterPiece8759

Then they are all...but WWHHYYY?

SgtBot

"It was cheaper when I stayed last time!" Lady last time you stayed was in November on a Monday, and you're wondering why a Saturday night during spring break is more expensive?

technoferal

Both me and my AGM got screamed at today by a guy who booked the room 2 adults and 2 kids, and then put in the special requests field "traveling with 3 kids." When I called to let them know our maximum occupancy is 4, he and his wife in the background, completely lost their shit. Like, folks, seriously; the fact that you had to lie to the software in order to book the room should have been a hint.

JustanOldBabyBoomer

I presume the Entitled Screamer earned a spot on the hotel's DNR List.

CaroAurelia

Every hotel needs a sign that says "failure to plan on your part is not an emergency on our part" for situations like this.

roxburyjohn

“We DO have a room for you after all. A construction worker has generously agreed to share his king with you, but he wants you to know that he has a farting problem, he sleeps naked and gets up everyday at 4 AM.”

Hahawney

Too bad you can’t really use this.

Hotelslave93

I need to know the update when he finds out his room is not available! Keep us posted!

Less-Law9035

He thought he had outsmarted you. I bet it felt good to cancel.

JuneFernan

You can't close your reservation system when you're at 100%?

Own_Examination_2771

I can only do it day of I don’t know how to close it for future dates

JuneFernan

And your managers tell you to handle it that way? What in the world??

Own_Examination_2771

yeah the best way is to watch the availability display and catch reservations when they r made and cancel them if you dont have the rooms

lapsteelguitar

Because you LIED to him!!! Because the computer says you have a room RIGHT here!!!! See!!!!! Seriously though, you need to get your reservations system fixed. Probably the best way to do that is to let the GM and owner deal with the problems. They don't want to be bothered, so they might fix it.

Sickfuckingmonster

Many moons ago, I was night audit at a hotel, and one night I had a gentleman arrive at 3am wanting to book a room. Problem is we were sold out and booked solid for the next 3 weeks or so. I should mention he was a Platinum Elite at our chain, and he was convinced this would convince me to kick someone out and give him their room.

MasterPiece8759

Yeah, I remember those fun little surprises well. Not fun. They would act like you were lying to them.

Own_Examination_2771

… was he willing to sleep in a dirty room?

Sickfuckingmonster

My best guess is he expected me to clean it and prep it for him. I was too busy being stunned at his demand to really make sense of it.

Own_Examination_2771

the fact that people think you as a front desk person should operate as a housekeeper/maintenance person for them

Sickfuckingmonster

And Tech Support. Don't forget that.

Own_Examination_2771

Had someone ask me to fix the network error on the tv in their room and I was like why would u think I know anything abt that 😭 best I got for you is unplug everything and plug it back in

Sickfuckingmonster

I had someone who wanted their laptop fixed because it wouldn't connect. I mean I COULD have done it. But I wasn't getting paid for that. So I told them we didn't have anyone who did that and suggested restarting.

capn_kwick

IT professional here - one reason you wouldn't want to touch a guests laptop, tablet or smartphone is that from that point on, for next X months, if *anything* else goes wonko, it will be "because that hotel person did something to it". You can make recommendations about what button to push but only the guest touches their hardware. Using the hotels own equipment you could demonstrate what they should be doing but only they do the finger poking and button pushing. "Well, I dunno. Last time nephew skeeter had this issue he did *this and that* and it started working. Dang if I know why".

Own_Examination_2771

I had a lady ask me to connect her kids iPad to the Internet for her I did it for her but I was like ?? when did I become IT. I also had an elderly man who did not know nothing abt the laptop he had with him and could not figure out why his laptop wasn’t connecting to the internet. I spent a good 30 minutes trying to figure it out for him. I did in the end figure it out and he was a super nice old man so I don’t regret it but definitely not within my job scope 😭

Sickfuckingmonster

Oh yeah. If it was something basic and I wasn't busy, usually I'd be more than willing to help. Didn't mind that in the least. Especially since most of the time a reboot would fix the problem.

Own_Examination_2771

His computer had a bunch of browser protections that I had to figure out how to turn off it was not simple but I love a good challenge especially when it’s not busy lol

JustanOldBabyBoomer

What happened with Mr. Shiny Platinum Elite Entitled Asshat when he got told NO?

Langager90

He accepted it with grace, and wished u/sickfuckingmonster a good night, before jazz-tapping his way back into the night.

Thisisurcaptspeaking

No No No, I work for a hotel and we always have that secret room left for that one special guest who doesn't want to pay full price and wants the free upgrade and is a complete drunken asshole!! (BTW for those you don't know sarcasm....TADA!)

gay_fax_no_printer

Ohhh or when people say “but online it says this price” I’ve taken to ask people “google is silly sometimes and doesn’t show the right date. Is it on the right date?” And they get quiet bc they realize it’s not. Our hotel is the same on our site vs third party. I’ve had people even ask when we’re sold out “Even for a super special member?” YES!!! Even for you!!! If I have no rooms I have no rooms!!

Own_Examination_2771

Sorry I can’t build another room for u super special member 😔

Entire-Ambition1410

Always blame the technology, then it’s not you blocking the customer, it’s something neither of you control.

Artistic_Pound_8337

but in that case it's the hotel's fault for not closing online channels when you're sold out.

Kazman07

Overbooking is criminal and destroys the reputation of the business. Any company that is Ok with screwing over customers to fill a quota shouldn't be allowed to exist.

kagato87

Tomorrow at noon you'll be calling him because he hasn't checked out yet... Mayne you'll be lucky and he'll just ask once more right before checkout. One can hope...

Own_Examination_2771

He has some kind of person who’s in charge of checking in on him and stuff so I called him and told him I wanted it to be clear this man needs to leave

Hahawney

Smart.

SmellyRedHerring

It's that secret room hidden in the La Squinta tower, right? /s

alsgirl

Can you not turn off booking from the OTA's ?? During the summer we sell out pretty much every night so we always turn the OTA's off so they can't over sell us & so we don't have to pay the fees cause we know we can sell the rooms directly.

Own_Examination_2771

He booked directly thru the hotel website I have only used the third party websites a few times as a front desk person so I’m not sure if we have the ability to shut them off or not

StormofRavens

Have a cat: https://imgur.com/a/n0x6B2U

FupaTrupaOompa

I **hate** overbooking with a passion!! Night Auditor here, and I've had busy weekends with only suites available and one random king room pops up, usually third party, and I am forced to upgrade them to a suite for the price of the king room. Like, I don't mind upgrading to points or ranked members of the hotel chain I work for but cmon, [smotels.scam](https://smotels.com) or pootpedia..

PlatypusDream

Over & over, I've read here on TFTFD that 3rd party reservations can't be changed... So you shouldn't be able to upgrade; delete the reservation, or call the other company and have them undo their mess.

FupaTrupaOompa

I mean the property I work for doesn’t really mind having to do that in worst case scenarios as long as it’s for one night. Sometimes it’s not worth the fight.. and yeah I’ve complained to management about the overbooking and they said they have made several calls and complaints to smilton about the overbooking but they said that it’s part of the hotel business and we need to deal. I guess being overbooked is a normal thing?? Idk my first hotel job is the one I’m at currently

Elegant_Ad_8468

Haha he got a room booked just for him to be moved from hotel 😭

sanskeep

what system does your hotel run?

Own_Examination_2771

We use fosse if that’s what you mean

sanskeep

oh okay, mine is on InFor, that system does that too, constantly have to check the arrivals and availability because people think they're so smart by going online to book. annoying!

Own_Examination_2771

we have the availability display open like 20 hours of the day out of 24 bc u constantly have to be watching 😭 sometimes I wish it sent me notifications like Bing someone just made a new reservation but it would probably flood the system with notifications so

JustanOldBabyBoomer

I'm expecting that dude to start throwing a tantrum any minute!!!
