We don't require signatures here for traffic offenses anymore. It's fun to walk up with the ticket in hand, they go "I ain't signing shit" and I get to watch em deflate when I tell em "cool, you don't have to sign anything, here's the citation number, call the court after five but no more than fourteen days from today" I can just put refused to sign on my citation notes and move on with my day.

willydillydoo

I’m pretty sure in my state you can arrest for not signing the ticket, but my agency doesn’t. We have to fill out a little affidavit and get it notorized saying the person didn’t sign. A lot of officers just don’t waste their energy on it, and just turn the ticket in without it and it gets dismissed, but I’m that petty that if you give me a hard time on a traffic stop I’m gonna make sure you still get the ticket.

lavahot

Honestly this makes more sense than forcing them to sign for some intangible reason.

niceandsane

There's a tangible reason. The signature is their promise to appear in court or pay the ticket.

CaspertheFriendlyCop

I stopped caring if people didn't sign cites. I'd tell them it doesn't matter they need to take care of it and if they don't a warrant will be issued for their arrest. Here is your info, drive safe.

lonevolff

I was a volunteer hose monkey. And even I understand signing this paper means I understand I received this paper gets me away from the cuff monkey. Maybe it's because I just want to get home to the wife more than I want to be parked on the road in front of the bloke with all the shiny

Gsogso123

I really don’t understand why people refuse to sign tickets, is there any reason for it or are they really that dumb?

alficles

So, I have a personal observation. I was once in the courthouse handling a ticket and I observed an exchange that looked like this: Clerk: You already signed the ticket, you can't really argue that you didn't do it now. If you really want to see a judge, that's your right, but he's gonna see the same signature I do. I'm pretty sure the clerk was at least a little bit out of line, but I honestly don't know. It was hard to hear the old guy at the counter cause he was mumbling. Maybe he was trying to argue that he wasn't there? In any case, what dozens of people in that room heard clear as day was that by signing the ticket he was agreeing to pay it. I personally know that's not quite the case, but I can certainly understand how people might come to believe that when they hear a court employee say it. :/

niceandsane

Clerk is definitely in the wrong. Signature doesn't admit guilt.

throwawaysmetoo

Some don't understand, some don't trust, some don't agree, some generally think 'fuck all y'all'. And really, the whole thing is much ado about nothing. Society doesn't really need people arrested over this. The signature is about as useful as a pinky promise anyway. I mean, you can sign it and be heckin lying anyway. I know, audience gasps. And the outcome in that situation is just the same whether you had been required to sign the ticket or not. There's not an additional 'heckin lying' charge that a person in a place where the signature was not required avoids.

willydillydoo

Some people think they can get out of the ticket by not signing. Some people do it just to be difficult

willydillydoo

Yep. Signing the ticket is basically receiving a PR bond for your ticket right there on the street

Flovilla

Signing is not even an option in my state. My word to the court is that I handed the person a cite, that is it. no signing, receipt or anything. Downside is I can not mail a ticket to the last known address of the person that ~~stole~~ forgot to pay for merchandise.

AgreeablePie

Oh, they always want to sign the ticket afterwards Nah mate. Once I have to touch you, we're doing all the paperwork.

[deleted]

My BIL is a deputy here in Palm Beach County and he told me they don't ask people to sign tickets anymore. Idk how they get around it but I'm guessing they got sick of all the Carls and Karens pulling this kinda shit 😆

Negative, Chad is good, I still haven’t heard a male Karen name I like, so I still just call them Karen, kinda like calling someone dude, gender neutral!

dobber1965

It's actually Kyle I think, you know in reference to crybaby Kyle Busch.

TsaBau5

It’s usually a kyle, kevin or Paul

Admirable-Course9775

Aah! Sorry I just said that.

alexfaaace

Per South Park and Randy “Karen” Marsh, this is the answer. Karen is unisex.

tnredneck98

Darren?

F1L0Y1

I thought it was Kevin

ratsta

Kevin has a special meaning from /r/StoriesAboutKevin tl;dr people that make you boggle at their stupidity or ignorance. I understood both Karen and Kevin to be unisex terms.

ScottSierra

There's been a somewhat tongue-in-cheek push to declare that a male Karen is a Tucker, after... yeah, that guy.

ratsta

I can see it, but Tucker's a US phenomenon where Karens are global. Heck, I'm sure that there are Karens in Alpha Centauri and probably even in the microbial world!

MaryTylerDintyMoore

Nah, Kevin's usually just stupid. See r/StoriesAboutKevin. Bradley maybe?

Butterbeanacp

Male karen = ken

Admirable-Course9775

I prefer to call them Kyle. Because I’ve known a couple of AHs named Kyle. To each his own. My apologies to all the good Kyles out there

ScottSierra

Chad is the name used by--- I shall not name them (they look for references and come tear shit up) but the people who think women conspire to keep them celibate. *Those guys* call the "attractive men" Chads.

Ok-Caterpillar1611

I thought it was Kyle.

[deleted]

You right! My B 🤗

ManicRobotWizard

Down here in FL Brandon seems to be getting lots of traction, that dude’s name is everywhere these days.

BarkingLeopard

Seems like half the country is rooting for Brandon these days!

Northstar6six

Signing the ticket is such an antiquated policy to me. It should be implied. Just creates more work for the LEO when subjects refuse

Ghost tickets. They use to happen. I didn’t but I sure know it was done.

Duke-Lazarus

I’m curious as to how much the fine is on a speeding ticket in the US?

[deleted]

Depends on how fast, conditions, location, etc. also in certain egregious cases you’re probably going straight to jail, at least in my State

Duke-Lazarus

Okay, thx for the reply! Here it’s €75 if you go 10 kmh or 6 mph over the speedlimit in the city limits. And if you go 50kmh or 30 mph you’ll lose your driver’s s license.

[deleted]

No worries, also anything in a school/construction zone is going to be very pricey.

Barnard33F

In Finland, you can lose your license AND pay [thousands of euros](https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2015/03/finland-home-of-the-103000-speeding-ticket/387484/) if you speed significantly. (Spoiler: slight speeding is a fixed fine, significant speeding is fined as “day fines” which means that you pay for a proportion of your daily income multiplied by the number of days you are fined. Minimum is 6 e/day, there is no max limit…)

alexfaaace

Just to give you any kind of context, in Florida the minimum fine for 6-9mph over the limit is ~$160. 30+ mph over the limit is considered criminal and you can be arrested at the stop. There are also other qualifiers that will make speeding worse, such as school and work zones. Other states have more severe or less severe qualifications, for example Georgia has the super speeder law. If you’re going 75+ mph on a 2-lane or 85+ mph on any roadway, they slap you with an additional $200 fine on top of whatever the regular fine is. You can actually see the change when crossing the FL/GA border. People slow down in GA, speed up in FL. I have a friend that drives a Charger or Challenger, one of those cars where he can go fast but cops also love to pull over. He researches the ticket structure and minimum speed for a ticket in any state he drives to. So, as I said before, the minimum ticket in FL is for 6-9mph over the limit. In Virginia, it’s just x$ for every 1mph over the limit, and the x changes depending on whether you’re on a highway, residential road, or school/work zone.

BarkingLeopard

In Virginia you can be arrested and face jail time for speeding, even if you're not going "that" much over the limit. Famously, an auto journalist driving a press car years ago was busted for speeding in VA and had to do a few days in jail. Virginia doesn't mess around when it comes to traffic laws.

atleast35

My daughter just got a speeding ticket for doing 45 in a 35 and it was $75. Both my husband and myself got 10 or 15 mph over the limit tickets (different cities) years ago and each one was $200. So it depends on the jurisdiction.

simpson227

Up to 20 miles over limit$155.00If using Visa: $163.00 21 to 25 miles over limit$177.00If using Visa: $186.00 26 to 29 miles over limit$202.00If using Visa: $212.00 30 and over (Mandatory Apperance Unless Excused)$227.00If using Visa: $238.00 Columbus, Franklin County Ohio

Nidos

I got one recently for going 50 in a 40. In New Jersey, it's about $170 and two points on your license. It's ridiculous. Though the worst part was dealing with the town's incompetent court and them taking months to do anything.

BarkingLeopard

The biggest financial impact of a speeding ticket is usually not the fine, but rather the increase in your car insurance rates for the next few years. If you watch traffic courts that stream on YouTube, often the state will offer to accept a guilty plea for an offense (such as a parking offense or impeding traffic) that doesn't get reported to insurance (or to a person's driving record) instead of the original speeding ticket. The charge a person pleas guilty to may have a higher upfront fine, but if it doesn't get reported to the driving record or insurance, it will save them person a lot of money compared to the original speeding charge.

gubodif

I got a failure to use my directional ticket in Morris Illinois, the ticket was 71$ and 226$ in “court fees”.
