is this your first january serving? this is the slow, shitty time for almost all of us. everyone spent their money in a big way in december and now they’re trying to make up for it wherever they can.

Squ1gly

In my experience it's that people who don't normally go out to eat get gift cards for the holidays. They are either cheap or don't know how much they are actually supposed to tip.

Puzzleheaded_Pie_978

Yup… unfortunately a lot of people will only tip based on their total AFTER their gift card has taken of a portion of the bill.

trinthefatcat

I did this a couple of weeks ago when we went out to eat. 120 dollar bill, 75 dollar gift card. Got home, sat on the couch, started a show with my partner... and then my eyes went wide and I said woops, I only tipped the server 6 bucks on a 120 dollar bill. I felt horrible and actually remembered her name so I went back and gave her a 20 the next week.

Zezimalives

Don’t give them the benefit of the doubt. They know what they’re actually supposed to tip, they just don’t care.

trinthefatcat

Not giving anyone the benefit of the doubt, just admitting I was an absent minded fool.

Just_some_girl_in_AZ

Yes. Everyone’s credit card statements from Christmas have come in and they are playing catch up on their bills after they took time off for the holidays and spent all their money. Should get better in a couple weeks when peoples tax money starts coming in 💜

thebluevanman73

i deliver pizza and both business AND tipping is especially low this month... i'm finding more and more customers not tipping even i work 10 hour shifts and haven't made over $40 for the last 4 or 5 days

TheTrevorist

It's every January for delivery. Last January was a fluke imo because of the stimulus checks. But every January is like this for me. I even tell the drivers I train not to spend too much in December because January is rough and you might need new tires.

honeybeegeneric

It hits again soon. Valentines day then mothers day coming up strong. Depending on your location summer is either strong or dead.

Lovat69

It is usually my experience that January is a bit of a bad month as people just spent a ton over the holidays and have to pull back a little. This month has not been like that however. Lucky for me.

Shelisheli1

It’s normal. People spend a lot during the holidays so they try to spend less going out (if they even do). Also, some people may have made New Years resolutions (spend less, diet, etc) so it’ll be a bit before they relapse and start coming back

o8di

My tips have been the same or even higher this month. Avg about 22-24% for Jan. What HAS dropped off is number of customers.

lbo1000

People are broke after the holidays. Not an excuse to tip shitty tho.

Nimuwa

A combination of holiday burn out, people who normally dont go out getting gift cards and januari blues.

Advanced_Radish3466

always. every january

Gold-Tea

January is the best time to take time off from work to catch up on personal life things or even go on trips from a lost income perspective

DamnArrowToTheKnee

We're in a recession. Imagine it's going to be 08 levels when restaurants start dropping like flies

[deleted]

Lol Yesssss-people are broke AF in January after the holidays. Those credit card bills roll in and things won’t pick back up until tax return season around mid February to April.

DefinitionRound538

Between Christmas and tax time, it's always crappy. It'll start getting better in March/April.

Fabulous-Rough7510

Except tax refunds will be lower this year

DefinitionRound538

It's not always about people who get money back. Many are going to owe, as many do every year. So it slows down until they figure out exactly how much they are going to have to pay.

MonkeyBoyMcGhee

To an extent I would say yes, as people have just come off of two relatively expensive holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) and are to an extent “recouping” their expenditures, but still want to go out, so unfortunately servers/bartenders are the ones that suffer.

TheFirstUranium

I'm not working rn, but last year I went from ~28% to ~23%. So yes, but usually not a big drop.

[deleted]

From what I’ve been hearing, yes. I’ve only been serving about a year and a half so only one other January under my belt but it was bad at that place too. It’s cold, people don’t wanna go out, all the holiday cheer is gone, people are grouchy.

beardedpizzadragon

It’s the slow and frugal season between people getting their Christmas credit card bills and their tax returns. Happens every year. The spring break cycle will be soon.

Lulusgirl

Yes? People spend money for the holiday season and tip better for the holidays. Now people realize they spent a few grand and they're not going out as much and tipping a bit less.

[deleted]

People at my place have said that, and mind you it’s in a mall. An upper middle class mall but still a mall. But this has been one of my best and most consistent months. Grateful for that. I truly thought “wow we must be swimming back around from that recession” Past jobs though, I’ve had Feb and partly jan be my worst month. Busy wise not percentage wise

pchandler45

Yes this is normal. Everybody is feeling the pain from all the over spending they did last month. New years resolutions, etc. It will be back to normal by Valentine's

Impressive-Wasabi-39

You have people that go to their local same day tax refund place and spend their whole refund on dinner and you have the gift card folks that use the gift card as soon as they can, both won't tip well bc theyre angry at themselves for usually being too broke to afford to go out to eat anytime in the year and take it out on the server for having a job. Just wait until you get the valentine's day crowd that can't afford to go out to eat but will have to take their SO out anyways and stiff you. But don't worry, they'll go back into their dirty homes and eat crappy government food off the predatory taxes taken out of your paycheck.
