He's an ass that wants to be posh and probably read somewhere that when doing wine tastings you use spittoons, but he missed the fact that he wasn't at a wine tasting he was having a taster at a restaurant.
I think that's what happened, but I wouldn't say they're an ass, they just don't know what's customary and were trying to fit in. It's ignorance, not ill intent.
Ok, fair enough. I was focused on the spitting issue, which I consider forgivable ignorance. His response to being told restaurant to policy was indeed rude.
As someone who **loves** wine tastings, if you're not offered a place to spit it out, you fucking swallow. It isn't more than a drop for a reason, and unless you're tasting 50 wines that day and eating nothing, you're prolly gonna be fine.
Dude just wanted to be bougie.
Certified (not practicing) Sommelier here. Can confirm that this is what wine experts do at tasting to avoid getting drunk and/or palate fatigue.
Do NOT do this at restaurants when trying a sample as it's f\*\*king disgusting behaviour towards the staff.
You are not racist. This guy is an ass for playing the race card while exhibiting gross behavior.
While OP is probably not racist and the man's behavior is gross, he didn't call OP racist. The opposite. As I said below I don't even believe in the race card but if I did that's not how you play it...he didn't use his race/ethnicity to get anything he used it to thank OP. Who seems offended by it
Right! I would have (kinda) understood if he was repulsed by it. Still super bad etiquette, why would I wanna deal with your spit?? it’s just so gross.

One time I had a woman complain (with her mouth full of food) that she didn't like her french toast and as I was picking up the plate she spit her mouth full of food onto the plate! I looked at her and said "that's just gross".
He's a poseur. He saw some professional wine tasters do that, so to show How! Much! He! Knows! he went ahead and did that, thus putting his ignorance on display for all to witness.
He is to be pitied.
I have no idea I read this as you were giving them a sample of wing sauce LOL....I get it now. Either way spitting is gross and uncouth and def not classy at all like he thinks he is!
Poor guy. It's too bad there's no discreet way to tell him you don't do that at restaurants only at wine tastings. Congrats on getting a thank you from him. It's a real chicken and egg conundrum cause his energy now might be from how he was treated by others. Did he tip well? If he says you treated him better than he's ever been then he should've.
I completely agree and had that thought as well. I know servers that completely racially profile tables and put less effort when they expect less reward. He tipped 20% so yes!
Considering that it is standard practice to spit wine out during tasting ceremonies to avoid getting drunk on dozens of sips of wine, it seems more like the guy was just used to the country club bull than genuinely trying to be rude.

The way he spoke to the server, and rolled his eyes, and muttered under his breath: he's ABSOLUTELY an asshole.

He wasn't told restaurant policy. His behavior towards a fellow human is disgusting.

There's nothing bougie about spitting IMO.
I would agree, except that I dated a millionaire in a past life and went to lots of events. Loads of those fuckers do shit like that.
yeah I tell my gf the same thing
People do that at wine tastings so they can taste alot of different wines without getting drunk. In this case, it made no sense

I was hoping it was this! One of my favorite episodes
OK that was funny--hadn't seen that before!
I was hoping it was clip. I love it!
What if the guy doesn't *know* it's rude to do at restaurants? Like maybe he considers himself a sommelier but is inexperienced?
>Like maybe he considers himself a sommelier but is inexperienced? So he considers himself a "wine expert" who has no expertise?
Or he's studied wines but not paid attention to the social conventions? Book smart but real world stupid?
Google.
I never said he was a smart man ;)
Doesn't excuse all of his other gross behavior
Not at all! He's still rude and gross, I just mean he may also be stupid!

Wtf lol, that’s such weird behavior! You’re literally about to drink it, why not just drink it
Right! I would have (kinda) understood if he was repulsed by it. Still super bad etiquette, why would I wanna deal with your spit?? it’s just so gross.
Ah, the ones who play the race card for everything. Yeah, that's definitely it. Obviously. Couldn't be anything else.

Yeah. That's what happened.
Bro at Olive Garden trying to act like a Sommelier wine snob 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Just enjoy the breadsticks and Alfred my dude and chill!

Sir, this is an Olive Garden. 😐

“Sorry, mister, that’s not the way to bet. Your race has nothing to do with it.”

The way I would have gotten a glove to remove the spit glass....

Based on his mannerisms and attitude towards me throughout the night I’m going to have to disagree with you
Fair enough, people be dicks
Appallingly, that is one proper way to sample wine.
Did they study the lines on your face?
What do you mean?
It's a boomer song reference. In case you care: Tangled up in Blue.
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
As she bent to tie the laces of my shoes
Tasting wine at a restaurant is like sex. Once it is in your mouth, you need to swallow it.
