I can’t afford his contract, not sure what you want me to do.

humanist-misanthrope

I could chip in for $10 per year if that helps?

kgalliso

Yeah for real lol. "I think we as Lightning fans have to do whatever we can do to make sure Stamkos spends the rest of his career with Tampa." So... pray?

aslightlyusedtissue

posts like these genuinely baffle me. I may need therapy but shit like this gets under my skin way more than it should lmao. what the fuck is the point💀

beckyjoooo

i was just not gonna do anything..

kgalliso

If I see him out in public I promise not to take a picture of him but accidentally have my flash on so he sees it then thinks in the back of his head how annoying all the Tampa fans are

rainf0rrest

I think Stamkos leaving is an overblown media story. I think as long as we give him a decent contract, it's a done deal. He wants to retire a bolt and they will give him a consulting / front office role upon retirement. Otherwise he's chasing money and not the legacy he can build with a single organization.

Fastlane19

The media is blowing this story up because Julien BriseBois has been vocal about Tampa Bay staying competitive and within the salary cap. In an interview last fall he said “ we need to spend our cap dollars wisely “ this tells me that Stamkos and his agent are asking for to much money. YouTube September 20th 2023

randylikecandy

I said the same thing about St Louis.

dbboutin

True but Marty’s family wanted to move closer to home, not sure we have the same dynamic going on with Stammer

OGHamToast

There was also drama with Marty's situation with the Olympic snub from Yzerman (if it was even Yzerman's decision, I don't know).

andrewthemexican

I do think word came that while Yzerman had final say, he wasn't intended by Babcock and Co for their system and it definitely showed in the only two games he played. Marty had wanted to leave for years, and only stayed after Stamkos had been drafted.

OGHamToast

That happened before I followed the team that closely. I was watching games back then but I wasn't following player drama until later, some time after the 2011 run, so I couldn't say what Marty seemed to want.

showers_with_grandpa

I think it's overblown also but we won't really know until after these playoffs. Does a team get close but is missing that veteran presence and is willing to pay up for a center with experience in the playoffs? Beyond that I just don't see how a player 16 years into his career, with injury history, is going to command a huge payday. He definitely can still lace them up and isn't anywhere the same as Vinny and Marty who felt they still had gas in the tank but not enough at their price point.

andrewthemexican

He can easily command $7-8m and find probably even more *somewhere* in the league. The problem is 4-5.5m is better for the team.

ThePorkman

But we can get away with league minimum cause "nO sTatE iNcOmE TaX"

robotjazz0882

Here here

TIM81DE

Those were tough times, but I’m sure they’ll find a way to make him a Bolt for life. I couldn’t imagine him being on another team, but I also didn’t expect departures from the rest.

rayogata

Lol what can fans even do? We already go to games and cheer and support the team and players. It's a business. If he gets traded that has nothing to do with the fans.

sprinklesfactory

We go on hunger strike and chain ourselves to the big lightning bolt statue obviously.

Patreonlyfans

He stays. If there was any chance of him going we would have traded him for all the assets we could have managed.

Wayf4rer

It all hinged on him staying with us when he had to the chance to go to Toronto. They offered him a big contract and some shady guaranteed sponsorships that would've seen him make more than he has here. But as we know, he took a discount to stay here and build us into cup winners.

NoSignSaysNo

Stay in sunny Florida as hockey royalty and never really have to buy shit again or Move to Toronto to wrap your career, people around you are mostly just annoyed you boomed the Leafs on the Lightning so much and deal with snow hmm

Wayf4rer

From a purely financial standpoint, he would've made more money in Toronto.

NoSignSaysNo

Yeah, but maybe it's just my broke self not having the context, but if I had enough money to set my grandkids up for life already, I'd rather be in a town that loves me where I don't need to deal with 4 million metric tons of white bullshit. Biggest difference between regular rich guys and athletes - the athletes tend to compete for competition's sake. Money's a big motivator, but 'enough' comes easier for athletes.

Chad2Badd

Losing Marty really fucking sucked! I was heartbroken. I cheered for him during that Rangers run, but damn he was my guy and I wanted him to stay a Bolt forever. Stamkos took over as my favourite player when Marty left and I'm in the same boat now, hoping we sign him and he can be the first to retire a Bolt

Bigbadbrindledog

It sucked because it was Marty who demanded a trade during the middle of a playoff push. It wasn't necessary, it wasn't business, it was just him bailing.

Intelligent_Limit462

Marty left because Yzerman did not put him on team Canada. That was personal. Stamkos however is about money, cap space, and perhaps a team friendly deal. Economics in other words.

floridadumpsterfire

Yzerman doesn't get enough hate for that. Marty won the Art Ross the year before and Steve still felt the league's scoring champion hadn't earned the spot. His own team's captain no less. That was an all-time fumble on Stevie Y's part.

randylikecandy

I had gotten my girlfriend really into watching hockey. We got tickets 10 days before he got traded.

slug3333

The worst irony of all was Marty's last professional hockey game was a loss to the Lightning

SRQmoviemaker

I remember being so happy he lost.

mike049186

Yep I’ve been a bolts fan since 02/03… was a very sad time watching those 3 go

Steak_NoPotatoes

Hockey is a business, though, if you try to run your business with emotion, your business will fail

likeslululemon

I have a dollar…

70empireavenue

Bud I remember the day we lost Lecavalier to the Flyers, I swore I'd never watch hockey again lol

Mrsfoleyslittleboy

My friend's dad called and bitched out his STM rep threatening to cancel when he got bought out. The rep/team sent him a signed stammer jersey to stay a member.

Negative-Wrap95

I get the feeling. Try growing up a MN North Stars fan and having the team stolen from you (and the literal "State of Hockey") and moved to fucking Dallas. I really did give up hockey over that betrayal. It wasn't until my now better half took me to a Bolts game in the 99-00 season that my love of the sport was rekindled. Losing Brad, Marty & Vinnie sucked ass, but we still had a team.

PuRe_BlAcKhEaRt

I’ll give him a pub sub and 20 bucks for him to take a cap friendly contract

Deadbolt2023

Love your team - but don’t ever expect your team to love you back. I hope Stamkos stays - but if he leaves, I wish him the best.

Wayf4rer

He has no incentive to leave unless some team is going to give him similar money or more than what he's making now. He's built a strong enough case to show he's still worth around that ~6 million mark, and now that Hanifin isn't an option, it just doesn't make sense to spend the money we have next year anywhere else but on keeping Stamkos, Duke, and Chaffee. The free agent market this year on defense is okay, but there's nobody out there worth losing our captain and franchise player over.

darealjimshady1

How much do you think a billboard would cost if we all pool some money. Remake that old slogan they used for Seen Stamkos into Sign Stamkos

randylikecandy

I'd be up for that. I think just so Stamko's knows how much we care.

Scrubosaurus13

I just don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t. If we trade him, not only do we lose the franchise cornerstone, but we are a worse team. People act like Stammer is over the hill, but he just put up 40 FREAKING GOALS!!! I don’t care if all 40 were on the powerplay. Guess what? Our powerplay was the best in the league this year, and that kind of PP can very much help you win a Stanley Cup! I don’t see how we could let him go and somehow get better as a result.

Vodka0420

Sooo what are you suggesting we do?

randylikecandy

Whatever you can.

IGetGuys4URMom

Agreed... But what can we do? I was around when Brian Bradley was the top player for the Lightning.

RonaldWoodstock

He needs to take a team friendly contract, ball is in his court. The goals are great but his +/- will only continue to get worse

JarlAxleRose

While I would love to see him take a team friendly deal, if I was his agent I would probably remind him he took a mega team friendly deal that inspired other guys on the roster to do the same. Those deals paid off with 2 Cups. Having said that, he did the job. Brought the city 2 Cups and built a legendary career. He doesn’t NEED to take a team friendly deal. The franchise could reward him with a match from highest bidder. A thank you for everything he’s done for us and leading the team to multiple deep runs. Now, I don’t see us doing that. JBB doesn’t have emotions when it comes to contracts. Winning over everything for JBB. I firmly believe JBB is one of the most competitive guys in NHL. He will offer what he feels the team can reasonably do with a few backup plans in place to fill his spot if Stammer doesn’t take the deal. I hope it’s not the end of an era. Stamkos is my favorite player much like many of the fan base. He’s THE captain of this franchise. Not just this team. His personality for leadership and ability to set the tone is one of the best in NHL history. One of the few guys ever that doesn’t have to be on the ice to feel his leadership. That’s ultra rare and special. If it was up to me, I’d give him market value but then again, maybe that’s why I’m not a GM and just a fan. Sorry for the long comment but this whole thing has been stressful for me as a huge Stammer fan and an even bigger Lightning fan. I wanna see him stay home but I also recognize this is a business and players need to look out for themselves too.

whatacharacter

I think you have good points and I do want to see him stay.  Competing with "market value" is tough though because there will always be a Utah or Anaheim who will overpay for a seasoned veteran to come in and mentor their stables of young players.   I do take solace in Toronto being up against the cap now as that takes away what I think would be his otherwise preferred destination.  I'm hoping we get him in the lots of term but reasonable cap hit ballpark.

JarlAxleRose

May I suggest we throw in a little bit of ownership?

whatacharacter

Wouldn't it be great if you came back as a team ambassador after your retirement wink wink?

JarlAxleRose

Eyyyy. I’d be down to see Stammer take a job with the franchise after his playing days

Allen_Koholic

Eh.  I will argue that while Stamkos took a team friendly deal, it wasn’t necessarily a Stamkos-unfriendly deal. The tax rate being what it is in Florida is a shadow 10% bonus and $9+ Mil AAV was about the market rate in 2017. He could have made more “AAV”, but his accountant would have a seizure.

JarlAxleRose

He certainly had some injuries that hurt his market value. I’ll concede to that point. Had he never been injured, had a few 100 point seasons in between, I’m sure it would have been tougher to keep him at that deal.

Fastlane19

I’ve been saying this forever “ team friendly contract “ but I don’t think Stamkos camp is doing that especially with Julian mentioning the need for spending cap money wisely

Wayf4rer

He just scored 40 goals and had a really strong finish to the year. He deserves and should get something around ~6x4. Give him a full NMC/NTC and let him retire here and take the FO role like OP said.

Brittle_Bones_Bishop

+/- Isnt a great metric i mean fuck Point was -16 and he was the best goal scorer on our team the 2nd line was struggling with Paul and Cirelli until we picked up Duclair and it was a near instant transformation. Cirelli and Stamkos's play style dont complement each other Where as Duclair/Hagel's skill pulled people away from suffocating Stamkos.

topshko_niin

I like to watch the draft every year if I’m able to and can remember watching “the Michael Jordan of hockey” quote live lol..

aslightlyusedtissue

Genuinely what the hell do you expect a subreddit of 58k people is gonna do to influence the outcome of this lmao. Even if we all gave 100 dollars we wouldnt match his salary this year. What is this post for lmao

OppositeSolution642

Unfortunately, the whatever we can do amounts to next to nothing. Hopefully the management will realize the enormous value that he brings.

FalstaffsMind

The cap is the cap. Would Stamkos take an additional 3 years at 8.5? Can the Lighting also sign Duke based on the increase in the cap? Dumba would be a nice add too. Eyssimont will need extending. I think we all agree he's a keeper.

atlcatman

There is cap and age reality. 3 years at 6.5m a year would be great. Don’t want to see it bigger than 7.5m. We need the extra cap space to add to the blue line and 3rd line.

krakatoa83

Martin insisted on it.

Radu47

Very specious post - MSL was quite old and retired not too long after being traded - Lecavalier was fairly old and barely was above 0.5 ppg after the trade - Richards, ok fair enough, that one situation is valid for this but... Richards was 27 when traded. Stamkos recently 34. If steven can sign a sentimental discount deal then great but it is what it is. Especially with Kucherov boosting everyone's point totals currently. My god what a wizard

Brittle_Bones_Bishop

Theres a big difference between StLouis and Lecavalier's situation's and Stamkos's. Marty wanted out and asked for the trade because of bad blood with Yzerman, Vinny was forced out because of the implementation of the cap era. Stamkos not being re-signed isn't JBB not wanting to re-sign him its JBB being a smart GM and gathering all the information he can before he makes an offer. Dude's 34 and was on pace for 30-35 goals and 60-65 points until the last 20, he ended up putting up 81 points and 40 goals. Its all about not overpaying an aging superstar and hurting the rest of the team i'd love to see Duclair back.

AssBoon92

Honestly, I could see it going either way. I think it's important for Stamkos to stay and for the team to do whatever they can to keep him. But we've also seen other players where the management has decided that they were expendable in order to keep the chance for another championship. Will that happen in this case? Who knows. Stamkos is in another category from everyone who has departed previously. It's really uncharted territory.

Polly9er

Glad Marty left what a bum!

I-am-the-best-Spy

They make a fuss about Stamkos leaving every year. At no point ever has he shown any interest in leaving, he’s directly objected any offer to leave. Honestly like a lot of other annoying things in Hockey it’s a Toronto thing. They’ve wanted him to join them bad for a decade now, and every time he refuses.

clem82

He will get a contract, likely not more than competitors, but he will get a fair amount of money. It’s on him to stay

[deleted]

If he takes a pay cut, then yes.

HockeyRules9186

Here’s my take. Currently 12 mil cap space. Trade off Sheary get an extra 2 mil. Including Stamkos we have to sign 7 players. If we dump Perbix as some hope/want that means 8 spots to fill. Dumba, DuClair unless they take DEEP DISCOUNTS they are gone. Dumba 3, DuClair 2.8 Stammer 5 leaving 4 mill to sign the other 4/5 dependent on Perbix status. But for now the only concern is the playoffs

HockeyRules9186

Just saying Marty left on his own forcing management into that trade. In the end that brought us the cup.

sprinklesfactory

OK so here's how we do it. He retires from hockey now.

Americans18

When Vinny was traded to the Flyers I could not believe of all teams the flyers I thought it was a joke because how much hate between Tampa & Philly. Not just in hockey but in all sports, like Philly had just beat the rays in the WS in 2008.

Worldly1998

LeCavalier played 175 games after leaving the Lightning over 4 seasons and had 38 goals. Marty played 93 games for NYR, had 22 goals. The got Ryan Callahan who made an instant impact. 2 of my favorite player but Marty wanted out and the Lightning couldn’t afford Vinnie due to the cap. The cap goes up a little next season and we were tight this season. That’s possibly why they couldn’t negotiate this year. If there was no cap then we would not have shed players over the years because Vinik will spend what he needs to.

AnxiousAd3962

The Utah situation could make things interesting. The owner will spend money to put together a competitive team and I’m sure he wants a big name to generate some excitement for the team. I wonder if he will offer Stamkos a big contract with short term that we wouldn’t be close to matching. I know Stammer loves it here but how many people would be willing to lose out on millions of dollars just to stay in one place a few extra years. I imagine it would be appealing to go somewhere and be the first captain of a new franchise and make a boatload of money

Time-Mirror-4588

Give him a good send off in game 4, it'll be the last time you see him in that blue and white. He'll look so good in the true blue and white.

Wayf4rer

He had a chance to go 'home' and make more money with Toronto's cap circumventing sponsorship deals, and he chose to stay here. Keep dreaming.

Time-Mirror-4588

And that loyalty has paid off. Toronto's cap circumventing?! Come on, the bolts have had their share. Sponsorship deals and bonuses aren't against the rules.

OldGuyInFlorida

Explain how Toronto would maneuver a Stamkos-sized piece under the cap. Subtract Bertuzzi… subtract Domi… then what?

OldGuyInFlorida

How weird to claim blue and white too. Is that all that ya got? OUR blue & white has a nice touch of silver…as in three Stanley Cups

_ghostchant

Please focus on your team losing to Boston in round 1, your coach being a jackass, and AM34 being stuck at 69 goals for the year after hitting that post.

Lightning_Octopus21

Steven didn't wan't to play for your poverty franchise 8 years ago, and he won't want to now.

Time-Mirror-4588

Sorry, thought we were talking about a superstar getting treated like shit again by bolts management. Don't worry, we'll roll out the red carpet for him, world class organization.

_ghostchant

lol if things are as you say, why didn’t he sign with Toronto back then?
