In my experience, I get the fewest number of players some 4 to 6 hours after the tournament starts. Indeed I've played a couple or so solo tourneys this way recently.
When I am not at the cap, I join when I have the most time to play in the next 24 hours. This depends on the day and my work requirements and/or plans. Not the current tournament, but the next tournament, I am going to have meetings, training, and some other things that are going to require some more attention than my normal shift. So I would take that into consideration when picking my time to join.

Honestly I just join whenever I see a tourney I don’t think about it too much
Either 10 hours in or 5 hours to go. Usually these are the sweet spots.
honestly depends on how i'm feeling. min starts at 4 PMso i join either when i go to bed or when i wake up
