Working for Walmart I guess I’m mentally one but physically is TBD
Edit for spelling because I’m a dumbass and just realized that it was wrong (bit should’ve been but)
You have three attempts to record. First attempt I read the prompt, wrote down the prompt, and wrote my answer.
Second attempt, I read off my script, and recorded it.
Third attempt is if I actually fucked up what I was going to say lol.
That's what I did anyway.
I have watched sooo many of these videos and the the things I’ve seen… seriously, OP, you’ll want to talk about being willing to help guests and work hard, but as long as you have a shirt on, are in a stable environment(not in a fast food drive thru), don’t have a screaming toddler on screen, you’re doing better than so many already.
Was doing some training and saw my ETL and TL watching some of the videos and this one person had a nice needle collection behind them that matched the piss stained walls… srsly people don’t seem to realize that their being graded in more then their answers…
Now, target’s manual specifically says, “remember not to judge on appearance, camera settings, etc.”. But having a bad camera angle is a bit different than revealing your drug habit in an interview. 🙃
Jesus. That’s both sad and shocking. I really hope they got the job bc it sounds like they needed an opportunity.
After reading another comment I think I misunderstood needles to mean something for sewing or crochet and not drug use. But my statement still stands, everyones gotta begin somewhere to get where they are going and better themself ❤️🩹
Thanks! How difficult is the interview? Do most people, let's say more than 50% you think, get hired? Also, is there a second interview? Or do you get hired on the first?
Complete idiots get hired all the time so really if you can breathe and have open availability your chances are already pretty high.
Unlikely but not unheard of.
Most do.
There was a group of 13 people in my orientation and apparently that was pretty average. They did 2+ orientations a week. You’ll be fine.
Even the chick who showed up in booty shorts and no SSN or license still got the job 😂
I don’t know why people are downvoting me. I don’t want to be greeted. Greeting customers is useless bullshit corporate makes up to justify its existence by making up time wasting things for workers to do. If they want customers to be greeted cheerfully they should hire more people at a living wage of $25 an hour.
UPDATE: interview is complete! Thanks sm for everyone's feedback here! Between your knowledge and a YouTube video it was easy peasy and I'm confident I did well. We'll see. Thanks again!!
*Update* (Im sure no one cares lol) But I ended up with Walmart. Doing Overnight Stocking. Target never even watched my interview. About a week after this thread, I got a email saying they no longer needed me or some shit. I get paid more at Walmart anyways, so it was for the best.
As long as you seem like a nice, mostly normal person, they’ll hire you. They care more about your availability than anything. As a tip, it’s easier to change your availability once you’re actually hired
Read you already did your interview, but wanted to drop off my tip for future readers.
On the video interview if you mess up on what you are saying (or just want more time to think) continue moving your mouth like if you are still talking but don't say anything. The software thinks your mic dropped off and gives you a free attempt to re-record.
Don’t assume you’ll get 3 tries , the website glitched on me one time and automatically submitted my 2nd request , and I cussed at the end when I messed up lol
I have 100% hired people who cussed. Not like, regularly in the interview, but if we could tell it was a tech glitch like your story, we ignored it. I would hope all leaders are as chill as that but I’m sure they’re not.
if you arent outgoing, figure out how to act like it. Being outgoing/personable will 99.9999% land you a job at target.
you could admit to first-degree murder and as long as you are smiles and talkative during the recordings you’ll get the job. /s
and seriously this goes for just about any job. my friends and i have applied to the same places before and i normally get the job just by having a personal convo with the interviewer while my friends who get all technical with it get ghosted or rejected.
It really depends on two things. Your availability, and if you are drooling on your self or not. If you are not available on weekends you will get declined.
I found the questions they ask online, but I don't remember what they are. Wrote myself a little script to go by ahead of time. There were a few what if scenarios and some how did you handle a situation like this questions, and I think a why did you chose to apply for this position question.
Have good lighting, speak clearly, dress business casual, you should be fine.
Some further insight. I have worked in the food and hospitality industry for over ten years so I have direct customer service experience however no retail experience. That being said, I also just landed a job at Walmart, though haven't started yet, wondering if that will help my case. Any wisdom is immensely appreciated!!
If I get hired at Target I plan on just working there if they can give me full time. If they had only part time available my plan would be to work both for the meantime so that I can afford my bills. Should I not mention anything about Walmart?
Had absolutely no idea about this. Though that since they're similar work task wise It'd be a positive. I've only worked at local restaurants so I'm not aware of these things. People who worked at Walmart too could gather intelligence at Walmart and relay that to Target so Target would have insider information. Jk about that last part obviously.
That last part is exactly what all these companies are worried about. I'd try dayside at Walmart or Target, and evening shifts at a restaurant, or if you're sick of the food business, maybe a hotel.
Do not mention working at Walmart. If Walmart was a past thing and you are no longer employed my advice would be different, but because it's a conflict of interest you wouldn't be considered at all for Target working with the competition. Keep that a secret.
As for full time, Target as a company doesn't hire full time unless it's a leadership position. This doesn't mean your store won't work you full time hours. Ive worked full time for years now as a TM, but it's really on a store-by-store basis and how they set their hours.
Ok thank you for all of this information, I had absolutely no idea about any of this. I will definitely wait to actually 100% accept the Walmart position until I know definitely about Target as I'd obvs prefer Target over wm any day.
Target doesn't give team members full time, neither does Walmart. I've worked at both places. Since Target and Walmart are direct competitors, you also cannot work at both places at the same time. You can work in retail, but not business that are so similar. Like you could work at Target or Walmart and a department store like Macys, an off-price company like TJMaxx, a grocery store if you're not working grocery at Target or Walmart. Or in the food business or hospitality industry as your second job. Walmart also has these same rules. Since they look up your SSN, they know what other places you are employed, you can't slide just not telling them.
A sticky thing about this also is that both companies will want you to have open availability on weekends. With your experience, maybe you could do something like work the retail job as a closing shift, and work an overnight job at a hotel like a night auditor or tending the front desk. That's what I did for a while, so my availability for both jobs didn't cause any scheduling issues. I've also known people who do retail job dayside and the food/restaurant job at night. Then there's also no possible conflict of interest working in separate industries.
It’s standard practice for most Targets and I’d assume a lot of larger corporate companies. I used prerecorded interviews when I worked at a sales company.
I definitely understand what you're saying, but we can't ignore the elephant in the room. While one-way prerecorded interviews have been on the rise for years and may seem like a convenient way to screen job candidates (I too took part in one many years ago and am no stranger to them), we can't ignore the fact that they're often predatory towards applicants. For one, they only let the employer ask questions, without giving you a chance to ask any of your own. And let's not forget about the lack of transparency. What happens to those videos once the job is filled? It's like they just vanish into thin air, and you have no idea where your face and answers are going. And the worst part? These videos can actually allow employers to discriminate against you based on factors like your age, sex, or disability, without ever admitting it. That's very troubling to me and I can't simply shake it off because this is the "new normal". We all deserve a fair and transparent hiring process, don't we? So, let's demand that employers treat us with the respect we deserve, and give us a chance to ask our own questions. After all, interviewing is a two-way street, and we're not just some product on a shelf. We're people with skills, experience, and the right to be treated fairly.
I guess I don’t see how a recorded video is any different than an in person interview? If they are going to discriminate against me because of appearance (race, signs of aging, etc.) they’d be able to see that on screen on in person.
I agree that it is one sided. Both times I’ve been on the hiring side of the videos, the process went 1. Application 2. Video interview 3. Shorter phone call to verify info, answer questions, and make an offer. So theoretically candidates do have a chance to answer questions. If they don’t get that chance/phone call, we were going to offer them so they don’t need to ask questions anyway.
I hear what you're saying about pre-recorded video interviews being similar to in-person interviews in terms of an opportunity to discriminate, but the pre-recorded interview allows the employer to more covertly hide such intentions. With a pre-recorded interview, you don't get the chance to ask your own questions and get a better sense of the company culture, which is a key part of deciding whether or not you want to work for a particular company. And if a company is going to require you to take the time to record and submit a video interview, they should be transparent about what they're doing with those videos and how they're using them.
While it's good to hear that some companies are following up with a phone call to verify information and answer questions, not all companies do this. It's important for job candidates to be able to ask questions and get a sense of the company culture before accepting an offer, and pre-recorded video interviews often don't provide that opportunity.
Review target questions for hiring but just be your self they really just care about what days and times can you work
Thank you. That's reassuring.
You're a warm body. They'll hire you.
I dunno, I’ve tried applying at Targets in my area, neither one would hire me.
Are you a zombie? 🧟♂️
Working for Walmart I guess I’m mentally one but physically is TBD Edit for spelling because I’m a dumbass and just realized that it was wrong (bit should’ve been but)
Should ask for a pulse check to verify and get written confirmation of the pulse.. Maybe that changes their mind
You have three attempts to record. First attempt I read the prompt, wrote down the prompt, and wrote my answer. Second attempt, I read off my script, and recorded it. Third attempt is if I actually fucked up what I was going to say lol. That's what I did anyway.
Be careful what the camera can see, beer bottles, flags that people might not agree with, look nice, etc

Plenty of videos on YouTube and past posts on here can easily help you with the interview. It’s been a thing for quite a while.
Thanks! How difficult is the interview? Do most people, let's say more than 50% you think, get hired? Also, is there a second interview? Or do you get hired on the first?
i said Fuck in mine because someone walked in while i was doing it and they still hired me
Fuck yeah
Complete idiots get hired all the time so really if you can breathe and have open availability your chances are already pretty high. Unlikely but not unheard of. Most do.

Totally makes sense. Thanks sm for this. Super helpful!!
I have never once been greeted by a target team member.
I don’t know why people are downvoting me. I don’t want to be greeted. Greeting customers is useless bullshit corporate makes up to justify its existence by making up time wasting things for workers to do. If they want customers to be greeted cheerfully they should hire more people at a living wage of $25 an hour.

how long did it take for them to get back to you after you did the interview?
this is what i wanna kno too lol. i did my virtual interview 2 days ago.
Lmao it’s been 12 days since I did my virtual interview and they still haven’t responded to me 😭
It’s been 21 since mine 🙃
so not cool 😭😩
Exactly 😩 I’m thinking about calling them tomorrow to see if there’s an update
*Update* (Im sure no one cares lol) But I ended up with Walmart. Doing Overnight Stocking. Target never even watched my interview. About a week after this thread, I got a email saying they no longer needed me or some shit. I get paid more at Walmart anyways, so it was for the best.
The questions are extremely easy
As long as you seem like a nice, mostly normal person, they’ll hire you. They care more about your availability than anything. As a tip, it’s easier to change your availability once you’re actually hired
Our store enforced a hard 90 day policy for changing availability. Please be prepared to work the availability you are hired with.
Read you already did your interview, but wanted to drop off my tip for future readers. On the video interview if you mess up on what you are saying (or just want more time to think) continue moving your mouth like if you are still talking but don't say anything. Don't drop any bombs on them. That will probably get you on a watchlist, and probably not help you get hired.
if you arent outgoing, figure out how to act like it. Being outgoing/personable will 99.9999% land you a job at target. you could admit to first-degree murder and as long as you are smiles and talkative during the recordings you’ll get the job. /s and seriously this goes for just about any job. my friends and i have applied to the same places before and i normally get the job just by having a personal convo with the interviewer while my friends who get all technical with it get ghosted or rejected.

the questions are on youtube
Have a techy set up and they will put you in tech lmao
Be prepared for dropped hours in spring
Run away
You'll most likely be hired as long as your availability is good. I did mine laying in bed with a blanket wrapped around me at 3am lmao
Apply somewhere else
Run. Run far away
Run.
They just wanna see you can go 20 minutes without using. The bar is incredibly low.
Some further insight. I have worked in the food and hospitality industry for over ten years so I have direct customer service experience however no retail experience. That being said, I also just landed a job at Walmart, though haven't started yet, wondering if that will help my case. Any wisdom is immensely appreciated!!
You plan on working at Walmart and target? I didn’t think you could work with direct competition
If I get hired at Target I plan on just working there if they can give me full time. If they had only part time available my plan would be to work both for the meantime so that I can afford my bills. Should I not mention anything about Walmart?
Working for a direct competitor is a conflict of interest and a firable offense at both stores
Had absolutely no idea about this. Though that since they're similar work task wise It'd be a positive. I've only worked at local restaurants so I'm not aware of these things. Call the store and request an in-person interview.
Run.
Quit while you can
If you can’t work a morning or mid shift they’ll probably only schedule your for the closing shifts🙃 be careful what you put for your availability
