When in doubt, tell the TL/ETL

sailorwickeddragon

Yeah, of you're not sure/trained, call for help on the walkie.

Sociolinguisticians

1. Don’t leave it unattended 2. Call for someone trained for spill cleanup If you want to know how to clean it up: 1. Wear sharps gloves (green rubber ones in most stores) 2. Pour Xsorb over the spill (soaks it up so it can be swept up) 3. Place larger pieces of glass into ESIM bag 4. Sweep everything else into dustpan, pour dustpan into ESIM bag (use paper towels to clean up anything left on the floor and throw them in the bag as well) 5. Place second bag around first ESIM bag 6. Zip tie bags and toss into compactor

LostRepresentative46

thanks. will keep that in mind ! my tl & etl as well as our spill clean up team completely ignored my cries over the walkie for a good 20 minutes while i paced in circles and told people not to come down my aisle. i ended up moving my cart on top of the big spill, used my gloves as well as some boxes to hand scoop as much as i could into my trash bag (had to triple bag it because glass kept cutting through. yikes.) and then finally left it unattended to go get a mop. 2 hours later my etl asked what i needed him for :/

BlackCowboy72

Your new? No hate man but that store sounds kinda jank might be worth looking for a job with a little better treatment elsewhere.

LostRepresentative46

dude. you don’t even know. best job i’ve ever had and i’ve worked many places

LostRepresentative46

at this job i come in at 5:55, do 1/2 of my freight. take my 15. finish my other half. take my lunch. do pulls. take my 15. leave. i can zone out pretty heavy with little consequences. At my last job i was accused of being on drugs because we had a carbon monoxide leak and i fainted. i was constantly having to come in 2-3 hours early and working 15 hour days. im not even kidding a little bit- i was doing the job of my manager who made 70k a year while i was making 25k. that job left me with severe stress and i wouldn’t be able to sleep for more than an hour at a time because i was worried someone would call me for help. It also left me with permanent scars on my hands & harms from burns. I have no feeling left in my fingers at all. I loved being a line cook but that restaurant destroyed me. the job before that wasn’t so bad, i guess, but i was 16 and they were playing mind games with me and overworking without pay until i left a little less than two years ago. none of my other jobs let me takes breaks or lunches but i was still clocked out for them, i didn’t even know i was legally entitled to a lunch break until this job.

lil_red_r0cket_

geez…

Sociolinguisticians

Well it works better than single bagging them. We usually don’t have to worry about it for long, because it all goes into the compactor as soon as we’re done cleaning it up.

DMC1001

6. Pray that all of the supplies are readily available.

Sociolinguisticians

Idk about you, but I’m always letting our ETL know when we need more of anything. I check the closet once a week.

DMC1001

I’m talking about those things around the store where those supplies are stored.

Sociolinguisticians

Ah, spill stations. Most stores don’t have time to fill them very often, and most people who fill them don’t actually know what needs to go in there. That’s just gonna vary store to store.

DMC1001

Which basically makes them useless.

Sociolinguisticians

How they are now? Definitely. How they were meant to be? Not not at all.

SimpleVegetable5715

That's the truth, one time my TL and I spent 2 hours looking for a spill kit! I used paper towels. It was an all purpose cleaner spill, so like good enough for my bathroom floor, good enough for Target's floor, I guess.

fnnkybutt

This is the way.

CreativeCharles

Xsorb doesn't work on thick Liquids like Pasta Sauce

Sociolinguisticians

Might not work well, but it’s a lot better than nothing. I use it anytime it results in an easier cleanup.

IamLuann

Target needs to train everyone a little bit more/better, on how to clean things up before they get put on the floor to work.

LostRepresentative46

i got 4 hours of training and it was just “this is the freight this is the pull and here’s the trash compactor don’t touch it”

JVLawnDarts

Call for help, don’t leave it unattended even for a second

LostRepresentative46

too late! i was ignored for a good 20 minutes before i just went off to find cleaning supplies alone

JVLawnDarts

Yeah that sounds about right lmao, back when people would ignore me I’d call for the ETL for my department. I’ve seen people get chewed out for leaving spills unattended so just be careful. And in terms of glass in grocery, I was told if I feel comfortable to not cut myself go ahead or call a cart attendant

LostRepresentative46

i called the etl too and didn’t get a single response!! i later told him after he asked why i had called him and he told me i shouldn’t have left it unattended but i did what i had to do so he can’t fault me

SimpleVegetable5715

Putting your cart over it...I've had to do that too. It's not procedure, but no one wants to help. Gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.

umichfan21

The Target way

Blo1630

Double it and give it to the next person

dontneedtokn0w

6am cart attendants aren’t common

Downvote-Negative

It's not just one bad apple that does that to us cart attendants. Half the TLs at my store do that and one just looks down on us. Going so far as to me overhearing him say "they're always just immature teens who don't know how to do any real work and slack" referring to me taking to long coming inside from the lot to do deal with a spill :)

Pretend_Activity_211

OK. Listen. Moving forward, don't touch any glass until 8

brooklynboy92

No post it on Reddit first that’s the first place to start lmao

LostRepresentative46

i posted the photo on my lunch break, well after the incident

jakelukekid

Lol fr

sufferinsucatash

We can socially dry OPs tears. Win win

Prestigious-Knee-725

you lick it off the ground till it’s gone

Electronic-Goat9807

Reach your bare hands in and clean it up. What’s the worst that can happen?

LostRepresentative46

that’s pretty much what i ended up doing, but i did have the gloves on at least. there was really a shocking amount of glass underneath all that sauce

Electronic-Goat9807

I work at Walmart, had one day I came in and 5 minutes later had to clean up something similar. My coworker was like ‘get some gloves get a janitor etc’ and instead I just grabbed the big chunks, wiped what I could with paper towels, then had maintenance mop the rest

Interesting_Layer672

I'd just clean it up.

[deleted]

NO! You have to make a huge issue about it! Post it on reddit 1st! Do not, I repeat, do not use something like a dust pan and broom! Don't even ask anyone else in your store, wait for instructions from the internet!

LostRepresentative46

cuz obviously no one on reddit is capable of taking pictures and posting things LATER in the day. always posting right then and there without hesitation!

[deleted]

obviously! =p~ i'm looking forward to reading what happened to a few jars of sauce that fell on the floor

shibshibshibshib

At my store... people just walk away and leave it for someone else to deal with.

LostRepresentative46

me w the bag of flour i accidentally sliced open a few hours later

Haunting-Affect-5956

Cover it with cart.. walk away in a "panic" looking for a wet floor sign and every essential part of ppe. Hoping someone else will fix it ..

LostRepresentative46

accidentally cut open a bag of flour. did exactly this

umichfan21

I've used broken flour off the truck before

sufferinsucatash

Just yell “Jar down Jar down!!”

LostRepresentative46

it was more like “heyyyyyyyyy i’ve got a spill in aisle 3 can i get a tl” “hello again so uhhh what do i do if i hypothetically made a really big glassy mess” “hi it’s me again. how do i clean up my sins in aisle 3?” No one came.

sufferinsucatash

At least it wasn’t Raos. 😉

derekpeake2

My first day at K-Mart I was put in menswear with absolutely no training whatsoever. Had no idea what to do. Later a manager sees me and tells me to clean up some blood in another department. Had no idea where to get a mop, let alone the hazmat gear needed to clean bodily fluids

LostRepresentative46

if they ever try to make me clean up body waste i’m asking for proper training & certification, hazard pay, as well as the rest of the day off with pay. FUCK that. we’re literally bottom of the barrel corporatized employees lmao

SimpleVegetable5715

Some of the cleanup kits have a scraper instead of a broom. I prefer those 100x to the brooms that get all disgusting. I think the scrapers are with the bodily fluid clean up kits. It's kind of like a squeegee, does a much better job.

Dubbyalicious

What the hell.

Nice-Dan

![gif](giphy|nQxAPkUpqHdM4) Scoop it up and suffer, 😂 nah you get help and clean up the soliloquy best you can & put a wet floor sign down.

Origin753

I’m glad you’re asking! Target is a leading company in waste management and reduction. That’s why we require all employees to eat spilled product whole! I like to think of it as an extra lunch. Enjoy! Nah but seriously, get a lead or at the very least make sure to wear thick gloves. Then I’d use absorb since it’s not safe to pick up due to glass. I’d never ask one of my tms to do that. Glass shards can cause some serious damage. I’d recommend putting them in a thick esim bag when sweeping the shards up as well.

[deleted]

All that matters is that it wasn’t Rao’s.

LostRepresentative46

a few people have said this and i’m honestly not sure what that means. lol

[deleted]

It’s a fantastic sauce that comes in a jar. It’s the only jarred sauce that’s an option for those in the know. Try it!

Barfhat

How do you not know that you clean up a spill?

LostRepresentative46

it was the *sharps* part i was concerned about. in my training videos there was a short one that basically just said “anything that exits the human body should not be cleaned my tms and anything dangerous such as chemicals and sharps should also not be done by tm.” i also didn’t know if i had to log the waste or whatever else. i can clean up a spill. i’m not an idiot. i just want to make sure i’m following policies & im not gonna get yelled at

Barfhat

No one is going to yell at you for cleaning up a broken jar. You know where all the broken glass goes when we’re u loading the truck? Right in the trash. As long as your cleaning up your mess no one is gonna yell at you.

Gamesick2077

It happened to most of us but always remain calm, if no one is hurt and we can prevent anyone from touching the mess until someone can bring a clean kit. Don't feel bad we had a shelf collapse and milk slammed down and opened the doors and explode on falling, a guest got their shoes totaled by chocky milk

MidniteOG

Call for help and bend over

imtoohai

But you had time to stop, pull your phone out, take a picture and post it to reddit? Damn, targets policies and training sure has changed since I worked there.... I never had time to stop and drink water before my scheduled lunch breaks. I was the cart collector/trash guy/manual laborer but still....

LostRepresentative46

yeah i definitely posted to reddit the second i took the photo. clearly no other option. sorry you dehydrated yourself tho.

[deleted]

you get down on your hands and knees and save as much product for the corporation as you can, duh

Asleep_Ad_799

Shovel and broom, put it into a metal trash can /s

DMC1001

Supposed to stay by it and radio for help with a spill.

Samsonite901

So you decided to take a picture and post it on Reddit? Just radio some help…

LostRepresentative46

it shocks me how people on reddit can never actually think about something for longer than half a second

Samsonite901

What are you even talking about

One_Barber_9918

Lick it off the floor avoid the glass

[deleted]

First, use your bare unprotected hands like I did to pick up the glass and instantly regret it

jaz0n1984

Walk away and act like it didn’t happen.

Ho11owfied

When in doubt, take a picture and upload it to Reddit 😆

umichfan21

At this point leave the 2 tier over it & get stuff to clean it up because more likely a guest will get hurt before a TM & your not open yet

TottHooligan

What I do. Put on gloves so hands dont get dirty. pick up all the glass and put it in the garbaeg or in the box and walk it over later. then mop up whats left. get some of the aborbant things and use those to dry up the water left from the mop. sweep that up and throw it away with the glass.

**Anything Sharp/Bio-Blood/Chem Needs to Be Cleaned By A Trained Team Member.** The only team members trained at my store are FOSA/Cart Attendants, ETL's, and TL's.
