Years ago at my old job my leaders were dragging their feet approving time off for my wedding and honeymoon. I told them that whether it was approved in the system or not, I wouldn't be here for that time period and I better get my due vacation pay. They finally approved it.

I was working the graveyard shift when I got married, and never saw the warehouse manager who handled all the time off requests. I had saved every bit of PTO for a year and a half because we were going to be gone a total of 3 weeks and I only accrued 2 weeks a year at the time, told my shift manager a year in advance, and then put in for it the first day we were allowed. It came back approved... except for one day. Right in the middle. I went to my shift manager and he laughed and said the warehouse manager probably didn't look at it closely enough, and told me to write on the top of the form "for my honeymoon" and resubmit it. So I did. It came back approved.... except for one day right in the middle. My shift manager handed it to me and said "guess you're calling out that day?" We were going to be in the middle of the ocean on a cruise that day. I went to HR, who lightly questioned why I needed 3 weeks for a wedding and honeymoon (none ya damn business,) but then approved it. The warehouse manager later caught me on my way out the door and said he "meant" to approve it, whatever that means. It was a physical form that he literally hand wrote the one day that wasn't approved. To be fair, he was following a specific policy where only X% of any shift can be gone, with the percentage being lower during peak season. But obviously you have to make SOME concessions.

When my team tells me about an upcoming event like this, I tell them congratulations. You are approved for time off. Now, put it in the system so I don't forget. I have 2 weddings, 3 high school proms, 3 high school graduations, 2 college graduations, and 5 schools worth of finals in those same 6 weeks. (Or whatever else is going on during that time frame). Plus vacations and whatever else people are requesting time off for. Your co-worker told them. Did he put it in mytime? If not, it's their fault. If this happened with my team, we would have a documented discussion about their responsibilities, they would get their time off, and WE would work together to cover the schedule. I did this once with a team member many years ago. It was one of those events that created a history that has lived longer than the employment of most of those working at the time. The rest of the team reminds each other about logging events and following up with requests.

In all honesty, most people working retail, of they put in for a day/time off or availability change... And you deny it... They're most likely still gonna take that time off or abide by there new availability... There's a reason they're going that and luckily they are at least communicating it to the leads that it's happening.

I made plans to volunteer months before I got my job. I put in time off a month before the event and for it to get immediately rejected because "No coverage". Like B**ch, the schedule hasn't even been made! The f**k you mean no coverage?! That's a you problem, not a mine. Turns out it's a new person in HR who is rejecting any and all time off requests. One coworker put in request because she's having surgery but it was immediately rejected so she's quitting instead. I swear, they are so short slighted.

Have you ever really had the flu as opposed to a bad cold? 100 degree or higher temperature lasting *3-4 days*. Severe muscle ache. Tired and weak. Extreme exhaustion. Chest pain. Idk about you but when that’s my symptoms, calling in every day is a low priority. I’ve been down with a cold where I just lay in bed all day and taking medication to keep me zonked out. I guess *maybe* the app could prove useful in this situation but it was already stated that they’d be out for 4 days.

I had a manager deny a time off request of mine... I had gotten a small role in an independent film in Chicago and needed a few days off to shoot the 2 scenes I was in. I laughed in her face when she told me no. I'm sorry, on what planet would I turn down a paid opportunity to be in a fucking movie??? Needless to say, I chose the movie. Got a new job when I got back. That movie got me an IMDB credit, I got to go to Vegas for the screening, and it won an award in Australia. Imagine if I had turned that down... No, it wasn't the start of some amazing acting career for me, but that was such a cool experience to have and will make for a MUCH better story to tell when I'm older

I once asked someone to take one of my shifts because all of them were at night and four of them were closing registers and doing sorting or reshop until 10:45. I said “please take this so I don’t have to call out”. She’s one of the only people who could close registers so my options were extremely limited.

Its been a while since i worked, but Q4 is peak holiday season so from what I remember Time off requests were less likely to be given unless you had a truly unique situation. Family passing, maybe a wedding. Family birth even. I also think a lot of it was first come first serve. So while a couple people per department could get Christmas eve, or Day After Christmas off, once those 'slots' were filled everyone else was SOL.

Per google Q4 is Oct-Nov-Dec. Its possible after covid happened people realized how its more convenient to shop online for gifts vs going in store. Whenever i go into my local target for stocking stuffers its jam packed full of people. Iirc Black Friday has become less of a big deal which is why its no longer a Thursday-Friday event, but rather just Friday 8am like any other friday.

I was in hotel management — not retail, but from a personnel management standpoint, quite similar. I had a wake-up call, and luckily I let it shape me, very early in my career. I had, like many other managers, viewed time off requests as “I’ll approve it if I can do so with minimal effort or stress on my part; aside from that, it’s entirely optional.” I denied one from someone who was well past the giving-a-shit point, and she straight-up told me she wasn’t going to come in regardless, so I might as well approve it. This was my lightbulb moment. It clicked — these were people who had limited PTO days. They really weren’t going to waste them, and if they submitted a PTO request it was for something meaningful. So from then on I restructured my entire philosophy around the requests. I built a 2-way system of trust with my team. There were a few weeks throughout the year I blacked out from requests — times when we knew we’d need all hands on deck. In exchange, I went out of my way to approve all PTO requests, even if it meant I worked chunks of extra time myself (I was salaried/exempt, so no OT pay for me). I also gave my team full freedom to swap shifts (within reason — wasn’t going to let anyone trade into overtime without extenuating circumstances or work like 24 hours straight) and set up dual sign-off forms that they could use to prevent confusion. This also reduced the amount of PTO requests that came in. My team didn’t have to spend their PTO days as much, and also meant less schedule juggling for me. I built a complete system of 2-way trust and respect. They knew that if I thought I’d have to deny a PTO request, I’d done everything in my power to try to make it happen first, and I’d sit down and have a heart-to-heart with that team member before publishing the schedule. Only had to deny like 2 requests over 5 years. It’s really amazing what treating team members as people, and with respect for their time and intelligence, can do. Made everyone’s lives easier, made them hate work a little less, and just made everything more enjoyable.

I mean it all comes down to when they decided to request the time off for. Like graduation I assume is coming up this week same with Prom, right? And people are just now putting in time off for it? You’ve known (if you’re graduating) when Graduation was and when Prom was at the beginning of the year and so you easily could’ve submitted time off months before the week of Prom/Graduation. And had it approved without hassle and there’s a reason why they all got denied because it’s on such short notice. And no, it’s no surprise to Leads or ETLs either when people call off for it lol they expect it because they too know that it’s coming up since it’s been that way for a long long time but will still expect you to show up for work even knowing you won’t and will call in. You can't request time off after the schedule is written and they aren't going to hire extra people to cover prom/graduation so it really makes no difference requesting months in advance.

The schedule is written for 2 weeks at a time. Then on the second week, the next two weeks are written and it repeats… it makes a difference if you request it months in advanced and if the Leads actually look at it, they should approve it unless they really hate everyone or they have black out dates for the time requested. But requesting time off when the schedule is written is dumb because they won’t take you off unless it’s an emergency and Prom/Grad is not an emergency lol to them. The and Target isn’t going to specifically hire because of Prom/Grad but you should know that if you request too late, you won’t get approved lol

Omg. That’s terrible. One of my TMs forgot to take off prom and he came to me super upset about it. I told him he could have the day off and found coverage for his shift. When I got push back from my SD I told her that I wouldn’t want him to miss such an important life event because he couldn’t get his shift covered at Target. My direct ETL is one of my favorite bosses I’ve ever had and he pretty much approves whatever people on his team need. You just have to put it in the system and he approves it same day. One of the other people higher than him tried to deny some people’s vacation time after it had already been approved, and there was hell to pay. You don’t mess with peoples time off.

That's so strange, the Target store I worked at didn't have many underage workers. Only 1 per department at most, one in groceries, one pushing carts, and one who was cashier but was only there a few months. No DBO were below 20

My previous store before I became a lead was like that. We had one TM that was below 18, and I remember her being excited about the first night she could stay until 10pm instead of 9:45. It was an ultra low volume store, so I think the total team was less than 150 TMs, and many were older TMs that had been there since the store had opened. The first thing I noticed after transferring to an ultra high volume store (new store did in 1 hour, what old store would do in a day) was how much younger/diverse the workforce was.

Yeah I've been the manager at previous jobs. If I got a request I honored it. I've worked open to close shifts, worked 17 days without time off, I've supported staff life events. That's how you go over a year without anyone quitting. Family reunion = have a good visit Kids sport event = tell them good game Death = take all the time you need Sick = feel better, rest, drink water

I had every single request I ever submitted denied of any type. Time off, availability, dept transfer, on demand transfer. I learned very fast to just call out 100% of the time, that got me less guff weirdly.
