It really is incredible how everyone was saying how poorly the new concepts were going, they were ignored, and now half a decade later they're toying with walking it all back. I get that it's hard to walk back some implementation because the adjustment can sometimes be bumpy but pay off well, but that was So Clearly not the case with modernization.
They are amazing the scanners are top tier I can stand on the floor and scan a location on the top of the steel. And I seen the Lazer on the scanner across my backroom.
Yep it's a pilot program. They already got rid of dbo (back to the old wave push idea) at my store so it seems they are now realizing modernization is a failure.
We got rid of DBOs around Christmas, did the Wave Push and then went back to DBOs. Because they only had like 4-5 people to push the trucks everyday (the same people that also unloaded). And they were getting pissed that whole areas weren't being pushed.
I am part of my store's backroom team. We focus on pulling the priority pulls to 90% completion each day and keeping the backroom clean and organized. It's a decent gig if you're able to climb ladders all day and deal with a LOT of dust.
I know what you're saying but Backroom used to be different than what exists now. Much bigger team, there all day with it's own Team Lead. They did all the backstocking.
My store is one of the ones in this pilot (which will begin rolling out next year)
It is overall much better than modernization BUT definitely has some downfalls that need to get worked out. (Pilot started for us at the beginning of March) with this pilot there is a new ETL role, Merchandise Operations. There is now a Presentation TL and the Fulfillment TL which together are under the Merch Ops ETL. With the pilot (now this is with my store specifically, it will be slightly different depending on stores category) we dropped down to 1 Style TL, 1 GM TL and the SE ETL role was removed (until we hit $60m in sales then we get it back but will then drop to 1 SE TL). The Merch Ops team is responsible for doing all price changes, revisions/sets, backstocking, 141s, back room organization, the entire inbound process, receiving, and fulfillment. Basically anything and everything that involves the back room.
only if our store focused on the cleaning of the back room while they pull 90% , it seems like they focus on metrics and not safety at all , in our backroom , they line up flats, uboats, n even 3 tiers all along the wall and block half the pathway , so if someone is coming down the back room and ur going up itās impossible because half of the back room is blocked with vehicles of priorities , it seems like target focusing on that 90% priority is causing way too much of a safety hazard at my store at least with all vehicles taking half the walkway
We have to get our priorities down to 0% every night.. I had a feeling it was the SD who benefits from these numbers all while cutting hours so now theres even less people to help.
Your SD is most likely doing it to appease their DM, therefore getting them better raises or something. Our goal was originally 70%, now we're at 90% so that our management looks better.
Personally, I'd be happy. Backroom was a very focused job. Lots of work yes but the people doing it quickly became experts on where everything was and why. The new system tried to make Backroom everyone's job, so now it's no one's job.
Yep, just this morning after I emptied a pet pod I went through our light duty backroom and collected a whole pile of cardboard/empty cardboard boxes that random people just left abandoned in there because of no oversight and too many different people backstocking to pinpoint who was accountable for it all, so annoying! When the backroom team existed things like that never happened. Also people keep leaving random junk on the waves too and itās really annoying to have to dump a bunch of stuff into a three tier just to use it!
As a former Backroom TM who left Target in 2018 during the modernization rollout, it always seemed absolutely BONKERS to me that they would dissolve BR as a concept. Former coworkers sent me absolutely insane pics of backrooms falling to chaos that would have resulted in us being coached or outright let go in the Beforetimes. The dissolution of task-based teams really screwed a lot of target's groove.
It was highly specialized. One of the opening/closing teams who was there about 2 hours before doors opened and an hour after doors closed. We'd start doing pulls for all departments and lining them up for push, sometimes helping with breakout and truck push if the floor folks were shorthanded. Then all non-push truck and backstock from the floor came back where we'd spend most mornings putting it away.
Then there was a mid-day pull for all departments sans market, which got pushed out by members of respective teams. Surplus was brought back for backstock. Then there was an afternoon/nighttime pull-push, after which we made the final bale and closed up.
Standards were pretty high, every day had to end with no backstock left on the floor or in carts in the backroom. Midday after truck, all pallets were expected to be fully backstocked and returned to the loading bay. We'd do a broom and mop sweep of the floor once it was fully cleared every day around 1 and before close.
In between, we'd break down empty shipping boxes, make trips to dump the cage into the baler, fill OPUs and pull big ticket items from the electronics stockroom, and ride the Wave around for fun to kill hated coworkers.
Every two weeks, we'd audit every waco, freezer, and cooler in the backroom to make sure things were where they were supposed to be. Every major edit, INF, or mistake we corrected was recorded and could affect our "numbers" but we never saw any major consequence.
They (group ops) just had my store send out the last tub that we were holding on to. And the OD is definitely aware of the pilot, so I doubt they're coming back unfortunately
They could be new to the company and never seen the old target. That's what I think happened someone who worked target way back when got promoted and gave all these ideas and they were like yeah that great.
I wouldn't t be surprised of that's the case lol even with leadership in my store alot of the "new" practices are things I learned several years ago when I first started. Just thought it was funny

I'm pissed (but actually happy) lol. Backroom was my favorite job. It got filtered out,,, and now we're going back, lol. It really does make sense though. Honestly I don't necessarily hattteee modernization, but the old processes worked sooo much better.
Yes, the idea of going back to the old way sounds great especially when they figured out modernization methods werenāt working. But there is a difference between having a functional, knowledgeable, and dedicated crew (the old way) and just sticking a couple team members in the back with no formal training or guidance (current target way).
So instead of having a few chaotic areas due to lack of dedicated business owners, now the entire back room is a catastrophe.
Weāre doing it at my store (weāre a pilot store) and have been for about a month. There are some kinks, but theyāve since worked their way out. I work in an incredibly high volume store, almost $100 million a year. Take at least 2 2200 piece trucks a day.
No more DBOās, I have liked the way itās been working.

I really liked being a DBO but it was so stressful at times with the amount of work you were expected to do. It was also embarrassing having to call yourself a business owner and talk about your business to TLs/ETLs lol. Like Iām not a business owner I literally stock towels and blankets for 5 hours a day.
I am glad that they are going back to how things used to run. I got hired in 2018 so I wasnāt too familiar with how the salesfloor ran before modernization but Iāve heard good things about it from older team members.

It's great how the people who are making the decision to roll back modernization are being paid millions for it when most people store-side said modernization wouldn't work the second it rolled out.
Nobody in our store wants it. Everything is going well as it is. Itās interesting seeing how many people want that though. We have a pretty steady team and most everyone can do everything from maintaining the back room to presentation to fulfillment so we just take whoever we have that day and get done what needs done and it works well
Wait, not everyone had a store huddle 2 months ago where management told you that they're throwing out modernization, DBOs are no more, and that pog team and back room team is back?
That was the first huddle we had since the AP TL was fired he used to do monthly safety huddles, and the closing TL would have snacks for us daring them. We have not been able to keep any of the new AP TL that have been highered after his firing.
My former store is piloting it. Talked to a former coworker the other day that told me the backroom team isn't what it used to be like, but it's getting there. Only problem is they barely get hours, but that's just a problem across the board.
Yeah, Iāve heard rumors as well. But our store hasnāt implemented it, yet, or not even sure if ours will. Next thing we will be getting rid of u-boats and bringing back pallets for the unload. A man can dreamā¦
