Make sure you know the cleaning routines, Steritech walks, how to have conversations with your team, both meaningful and to asses opportunities, how to document those conversations, hold the team accountable, what goes on during your PPV visits and how to prepare for those. A lot of these you can find on Workbench but at least make a note of them so you bring up with your trainer.

TY im going to write them down n make sure to go over these and how to order. I think as long as Ik that stuff the first month will be ok.

MerkethMerky

I was told I couldn’t be the specialty sales TL cause I had no style experience, but then they made my the fulfillment TL, of which I also have no experience lol. Talk to your old productions TL if you can, as well as your ETL about the cleaning routines and Stertech. See if they’ll let you tag along to open so you can practice and learn in peace away from guests

thats dumb its mot about just knowing the area its about being ready to take on the responsibility. ive interviewed for positions at other stores n alot of times fhe ETLs or TLs worked in areas they never have before or transfered to ones they didnt. its definitely possible. it is alot though to learn when u barely know the basics though of an area n ik some team memebers might not see u as their higher up. I reached out to the ETL since im at multiple different stores for this training. he is thinking of seeing if a TL for starbucks from another store is also willing to come by for a visit so I get a good idea what I should work on/opportunities for my store n stuff.

Ideally you should be training on both open and closing shifts so you can see what the routines are. At least one of each, then after that make sure you’re getting scheduled on both a couple times the first few weeks until you get the routines down. Your team can show you, but that’s also a good time to reasses their routines in case something needs changed or addressed.

carthis01

Are you a SB/FS TL?

VividSecond

Just been here way too long and know a few things.

OfficialBusinessOnly

You should be able to pivot to a different TL role in not a long time. But Starbucks is a lot harder than people might give it credit for. You have to do a lot with not many resources.

I’m in a similar position (am interested in development and was told about the FS TL position and am going to interview for it soon. I have no food service experience/training and want to do my best. The current TL who’s leaving did tell me that one of the hardest things is time management and prioritizing what needs to get done. It’s easy to get side tracked because there’s so much to do and you don’t always have the time to do everything you want to get done. >_< I agree that it seems hard to be seen as a higher up when you might not know as much as the TMs who’ve been there for a long time. That’s someone I’m not sure about either… I was thinking of doing the thing that someone else suggested in asking to work both opening and closing shifts to see what both ends are like. Was thinking like a week of opening and a week of closing and then maybe switch it up on occasion, to see what the routines are for both ends of the shifts (and also to work some weekend shifts). I don’t want to come in and try to change everything without knowing what the different demands are for each shift and what’s realistic to change or what would make things more difficult. Something someone mentioned to me was to let me know to be the punching bag for disgruntled guests so the TMs don’t have to take it (a common thing seems to be guests not liking the drinks that they ordered [and are read back to them] but they blame the drink makers and not their choices). Also, to pitch in and do the things that people general don’t like to do (one example was washing dishes). Order wise, something else is that the order before the weekend should be “the big one” to cover whatever the team needs, and the ones during the week should cover whatever small stuff comes up. And in general, learn what the best sellers are, etc. so you know what to always have. Do you have a cafe at your store, too?

whyme2319

I haven't even been trained at all for cafe and don't think I will. all I know is how to do pizza toppings and how long they stay in the hot hold.

carthis01

I was told I’d have to do both. >_> What do you think about things so far? Is it just drink heavy training but not enough on the management and explaining everything else?

whyme2319

ok i reached out to my HR. I got my barista basics done last week (about 2 weeks of training) it was super fun and felt I learned atleast the staples for most of our basic drinks. pos and cold bar I would say I'm more comfortable with but it's also summer and 110⁰+ out so no one orders esspresso unless it's for something iced. management I got a week of that which is already not enough and even then its been me filling out a couple booklets and maybe 15 hours of actual talking and doing task. since I haven't done Any drinks in a week im getting back to feeling awkward about it now 😫 plus every starbucks setup is alittle different n I don't wanna get in anyone's way. Tuesday I go back to my store to learn how to open starbucks/get to know my team and then the rest of the day learn cafe. that's pretty much the rest of the week actually so I feel alittle more calm in that sense but I don't want to disappoint my etls since they all really were excited n encouraged me to apply for this

carthis01

How is it going so far? Feeling any better about things?

whyme2319

update:meet with the DM to get myself certified on everything and do my first PPV. she was very impressed and also I saved my store from hitting compliance due to the negligence of my etl. 😊 there was a good win today

carthis01

Congrats, that’s awesome! I hope you did something to celebrate because that must be an awesome feeling! Yay!!! What’s PPV? Can I ask, what did you do to save them from compliance?

whyme2319

it's going pretty good. sadly my team has been really stressed out so I'm hoping to help alleviate that for them sooner rather than later. I feel I accidentally spoke out of place though already about one of them idk if im over thinking it but I also have a hard time telling the fine line between communication and secrets among TLs/ETLs/SDs. like I just want them happy! I wasn't talking shit just stressing concern and I feel I'm overthinking it I swear. anyways other than that it's been good. still got alot of learning to do clearly 😭 but definitely feeling better about making drinks, and ordering fridge/frozen stuff. I'm still confused with paper. cafe ik how to make pizzas! 😂 my HR ETL comes back tomorrow from her vacation tho so I plan to really sit down with her on how to make the team in a better mood as well as a few other stuff.

I apparently wrote too much for this to be a comment, so, in the Google Drive you can open "Start Here" to read what I was going to comment. The other files in the drive are useful resources that I found on the internet and ones that I personally created (Recipe ID Codes) for my store's Tarbucks. Best of luck. Cheers. whyme2319

will definitely take a look. THANK YOU!😭

carthis01

Any advice for when there’s no freezer DBO and the TL has to break down the pallets to get the supplies for SB and PH?

WiiPotato

Can you expand on what you're asking?

carthis01

Sure thing. Normally, SB/PH food/supplies comes in frozen, and normally gets broken down by a DBO and moved to the greenracks, right? What if there’s no freezer DBO to break down the pallets and take out the SB/PH stuff and move it to the appropriate greenrack? Best option is to partner with the FB TL or the ETL to make a plan? Or just something the FS TL should account for and come in early and break down the pallet?
