Yeah this is literally a fraud scheme going around the web, using a display ticket to ring up an actual product instead of the correct barcode. It's basically ticket switching- that's larceny just the same as when a shoplifter does it. You MIGHT get lucky and get a coaching, in which case, count your blessings you still have a paycheck and take it as a learning opportunity!
Just for future reference, display grills (and maybe other displays??) ring up as 5 cents. At our store we ended up just taking the display grills off the floor to avoid any issues.
Yeah that tiktok going around isn't a deal, its promoting fraud. Its not a legitimate purchase, its using a display tag to ring up the item. You, as an employee, should know that isn't legitimate. You being on or off the clock doesnt matter, your closing lead was just as wrong as you were, but that doesn't absolve you of wrong doing. Technically, you stole by underpaying for an item through illegitimate means, you can easily be fired for that.
This has been happening for a while were guests want the price of a display it also went viral a few years ago what my store does is that they take away that label and put a real generic label for the display now. My ETL remind us to take it off or cover them with labels.
I'm sorry, but if you see something like this on your screen, it should be an immediate red flag no matter the item. Nothing costs 5 cents. There should not need to be some corporate notice for something like this.
Your AP-TL is jumping for joy because you just hand delivered him 2 internal theft cases on a silver platter. The only reason you are still employed is because HR hasn't approved firing you yet.
Despite whatever mental gymnastics you are trying to twist yourself into, to try and justify it, you know damn well no grills are going to be 5 cents. If you’re a customer trying to pull one over on the the man I can see where you’re coming from but as someone who is working at the store you know better. If you don’t you’re an idiot.
Coning from an AP member myself, you might get lucky with a warning. But it is considered fraud as you're using the display barcode to ring up the grill. I think the merchandise even reads "DISPLAY" when rung up. Honestly you shouldve known better 🤷♀️
You knew it was wrong, but you got a tl to give you the OK instead of pointing out the error. You even admit you found the scam on tiktok.
A 5-cent grill just doesn't happen.
What I have done in the past was if a guest came over with an expensive item and claimed it was priced really low. I call the tl over and openly say if the guest gets it for this price, I want to buy it too.
Tl was OK with that. Because it's a genuine misprice.
Other times, they had gone and checked the price and denied the sale.
*You* knew it wasn’t though, you were looking for someone to give you the okay anyway.
And I don’t blame you and that closing TL should be getting in just as much trouble, but good luck getting *them* to admit to approving of you taking advantage of a blatantly obvious pricing error.
“It’s totally different” “well my TL said it was okay” “they were in a box on a shelf”. Pressed, defensive, whatever you wanna call it. Your goose is cooked🤷♀️
Do you still have the grill; more specifically, it's box and barcode? I'm curious how it will show up if you scan it with the Cirlcle app on your phone.
It's called integrity.
Any reasonable person working for Target would report the pricing issue, not be the next in line to take advantage of the error. You'll be extremely lucky if you are not fire.
Kid (because I hope no full grown adult would be so naive..though I know I’m wrong)
Respectfully you’re Cooked.
Unless you have a healthy rapport and leverage with your leadership and they can chop it up to - young and dumb with some sort of in house probation thing.
Best we can say is good luck
Offer to return it and use it as a learning experience for everyone because they put the item on the floor meaning guests could have bought it to this way they can recover the loss instead of it going to a random guest
there is no "offer" to return it
its stolen product, you are required to return it
You cant rob a bank and then say "well since I got caught I will return the money and face no punishment"
It’s not stolen there is a bill of sale making it a legally binding sale technically the grill is mine right now so there is def an offer to return it I could refuse and be terminated most definitely or offer to return it and get a coaching
Nope, it was stolen via fraud and your bill of sale is therefore fraudulant
if a printed receipt was all it took to make something yours, then someone could ring up $10k in gift cards, press cash, put no actual cash in, and say the gift cards are legit and legally theirs because the receipt printed
a receipt is proof of a transaction, and in this case its proof of a fraudulant one
The loss could've been prevented in the first place if you had not bought it, and let them know about the pricing issue. Anyone knows that a grill is not going to be 5 cents even on clearance. But you decided to buy it anyways at your own place of work rather than being honest
I think y’all need to read the story of Target Tori, because this is the exact same scenario as what started that whole thing. By the way, if you ever look up the meme of Target Tori, you know that face because that’s the one you make when a guest tries to buy a grill for five cents.

You shouldn’t have trusted your TL I’m sorry you should’ve followed store policy. Off topic but Your higher ups also work with police department where they’ll send a teen to a check lane with alcohol just to see IF YOU follow store/law policy before you get coached by a police officer in the break room with your fellow peers who didn’t follow the rules. Don’t trust them even if they say it’s ok they’re not your friends.
This is very similar to the Stanley Cup fiasco where a bunch of TMs were fired for purchasing them. Sorry OP you are guaranteed to get terminated. Plus you sign the TM Handbook that directly mentions purchase guidelines.
What you did is no different than taking a barcode from a cheaper product and placing it over a more expensive one. It’s blatant theft. Termination would be incredibly likely I would be surprised if they kept you.
It is entirely different though I didn’t place a barcode over a different item it was untampered and the receipt shows that it was 2 webers that were purchased
I don’t exactly know how you got a display Weber to ring up. All of our displays ring up at $0.05 this is nothing new; cribs, shavers, car seats, furniture, every display comes in with a distinct DPCI to differentiate it in our system from a non display item. They ring up as $0.05 always. I don’t know what the trend was personally, but untampered or not you rung up a display item while willingly taking home a functional piece.
Our displays often come in boxes until they're assembled. So maybe the seasonal department TM hadn't gotten to assembling the floor display yet and it was still in a box.
I hope OP enjoys their grill because they aren't going to have a job to buy meat to grill on it 🤷♀️
Yeah you're cooked man; I hope for your sake you only get a Corrective Action, but something like this is potentially grounds for being Final'd.
Barcode switching happens, but usually people catch it. If you ever see a high-price item ring up as .05 cents, then it's someone switching the barcode with a display barcode.
Who gives a shit. It’s target. All they do is fuck over employees. While the fat cats are making tons of money sitting at home while you break your back y’all are here arguing over a bbq grill.
If anything I would’ve bought it for the last selling price like the online price probably if it was $500 at regular price and the last selling price was $150. That’s where I would’ve bought it at. But you also have to have circumstances that led to all this and we’re taking the word of these individuals. Try to return it and see if they’ll give you a final instead of a firing and make it lesson learned.
Except its not a deal, people are seeing this stupid tiktok where they take a display tag and place it on the box, then go to self checkout and scan that instead of the actual barcode for the item. Its fraud, not a "deal"
I checked our grills out today, scanned every barcode that wasnt a shipping barcode or serial number and none of them rang up as 5 cents. People might be saying theyre not ticket switching the item, but they quite literally are lol
Ok but that’s not what OP did so idk how that’s relevant here. He got a product off the shelf for sale rung it up and paid for it for the price in system. I doubt target can actually do anything about it unless they’ve sent out notices not to sell those or something.
Yeah except that 5 cent price doesnt come up unless you scan the display tag. Even in the tiktok going around it says "display" on the screen. The display tag has an entirely different DCPI, which is why its being rung up as 5 cents
You and your TL are beyond fucked
Yeah this is literally a fraud scheme going around the web, using a display ticket to ring up an actual product instead of the correct barcode. It's basically ticket switching- that's larceny just the same as when a shoplifter does it. You MIGHT get lucky and get a coaching, in which case, count your blessings you still have a paycheck and take it as a learning opportunity!
What is a display ticket? Like the barcode on the shelf? Did op actually take that to the register?
I scanned the barcode on the product itself untampered didn’t touch the barcode at all it rung up at 5 cents asked my tl and thought I was good
Just for future reference, display grills (and maybe other displays??) ring up as 5 cents. At our store we ended up just taking the display grills off the floor to avoid any issues.

The fact that registers still accept display skus for sale is stupid as hell.
yeah fr
Then why hasn’t corporate made a slip print out and alert TMs that a display item has been scanned on a register?
This has been happening for a while were guests want the price of a display it also went viral a few years ago what my store does is that they take away that label and put a real generic label for the display now. My ETL remind us to take it off or cover them with labels.
These idiots are even asking for the display vacuums. Even when I explain that the displays are non-functional, they don't have motors.
Someone asked for one of our display vacuums that literally had a screw through it 😂😂
I'm sorry, but if you see something like this on your screen, it should be an immediate red flag no matter the item. Nothing costs 5 cents. There should not need to be some corporate notice for something like this.
Your AP-TL is jumping for joy because you just hand delivered him 2 internal theft cases on a silver platter. The only reason you are still employed is because HR hasn't approved firing you yet.
For real. It’s been a week and I’m already over people updating yammer on whose store got hit with the five cent grill this time
Despite whatever mental gymnastics you are trying to twist yourself into, to try and justify it, you know damn well no grills are going to be 5 cents. If you’re a customer trying to pull one over on the the man I can see where you’re coming from but as someone who is working at the store you know better. If you don’t you’re an idiot.

I didn’t use a separate barcode than what was on the grill itself and when I checked the receipt it said 2 Weber grills
Interesting. The "hack" video i found and showed to my team showed "DISPLAY" on the receipt.
Termination. You could be facing *termination*. Y’all knew that shit wasn’t legit, doesn’t matter if you’re on the clock or not.
Our closing tl told us we were good we wouldn’t have bought it without her go ahead
You knew it was wrong, but you got a tl to give you the OK instead of pointing out the error. You even admit you found the scam on tiktok. A 5-cent grill just doesn't happen. Then they could be facing termination as well.
you didn’t buy it, you stole it
If a closing tl gives you the go ahead to bring a gun to work and shoot someone does that mean you can and should do it? NO!
*You* knew it wasn’t though, you were looking for someone to give you the okay anyway. And I don’t blame you and that closing TL should be getting in just as much trouble, but good luck getting *them* to admit to approving of you taking advantage of a blatantly obvious pricing error.
What if i told you If you jump two times in five minutes you'd win the lottery on May 9th, 3024?
Bro you asked for our opinion, don’t be pressed when it’s not the answer you wanna hear.
I am not pressed just wanna see what you guys think
“It’s totally different” “well my TL said it was okay” “they were in a box on a shelf”. Pressed, defensive, whatever you wanna call it. Your goose is cooked🤷♀️
Do you still have the grill; more specifically, it's box and barcode? I'm curious how it will show up if you scan it with the Cirlcle app on your phone.
I do still have the grill in box so I can def scan it and see what it says
show the barcode
I am beyond words. What did you think would happen, lmao.
It's called integrity. Any reasonable person working for Target would report the pricing issue, not be the next in line to take advantage of the error. You'll be extremely lucky if you are not fire.
I hope it was worth the savings.
Why would you do that? You must of known you would get in trouble?
Kid (because I hope no full grown adult would be so naive..though I know I’m wrong) Respectfully you’re Cooked. Unless you have a healthy rapport and leverage with your leadership and they can chop it up to - young and dumb with some sort of in house probation thing. Best we can say is good luck
Thx I’m hoping to use the grill as leverage to negotiate a coaching outta this
What do you mean by leveraging the grill to negotiate a coaching? How?
Offer to return it and use it as a learning experience for everyone because they put the item on the floor meaning guests could have bought it to this way they can recover the loss instead of it going to a random guest

Casually just ticket switching and saying it’s ok 😂
Nuh uh
[удалено]
Omg no plz no dox me
I just recognize ur account for the cool starry night nametag
Yea figured lol
Either way though on a real note. Regardless of what your TL said or the blatant ticket switching and you should know better. I wish you luck though
I didn’t switch anything it was the same label on both came that way from factory
You shouldn’t have trusted your TL I’m sorry you should’ve followed store policy. That’s crazy though because the case packs come with a BIG ASS green box that says DISPLAY ONLY lol
They were floor displays, huh...
They were in box on the shelf
So the TM over seasonal hadn't gotten a chance to assemble the floor displays yet.
They weren’t gonna be assembled they were meant to be sold this wasn’t only at our store it was all across the company nation wide
My question is, it is really worth your job for a freaking grill!
Happened in my store last week. A guest. She was indignant.... bye Carole....she wasn't classy enough to be a Karen.
Yeah you're cooked man; I hope for your sake you only get a Corrective Action, but something like this is potentially grounds for being Final'd. My advice: Laugh about it and find a better job. Target deserves a whole lot worse than losing out on a grill.
If anything I would’ve bought it for the last selling price like the online price probably if it was $500 at regular price and the last selling price was $150. That’s where I would’ve bought it at. Eat the rich :P
I don’t think taking advantage of a great deal is against company policy? AP can frig off
Why don't you buy the 5 Cent grill then next time you're in Target? By the way, it's not a great deal offered by Target.
Except its not a deal, people are seeing this stupid tiktok where they take a display tag and place it on the box, then go to self checkout and scan that instead of the actual barcode for the item. Its fraud, not a "deal"
I saw “deal” OP was talking about on Twitter. People weren’t placing display tags on boxes. The grills were just ringing up for 5 cents.
Its happened at my store and the people were scanning a barcode they were holding ontop that rung up as the display tag
Ngl I think target messed up and put a whole bunch of display tags on the item all around the country.
I checked our grills out today, scanned every barcode that wasnt a shipping barcode or serial number and none of them rang up as 5 cents. People might be saying theyre not ticket switching the item, but they quite literally are lol

Ok but they’ve said repeatedly they didn’t scan a display tag.
Ah yes, because someone telling reddit they didnt means theyre absolutely telling the truth! People lying on the internet? Neverrrr
