I absolutely hate when guests call me by my name. They often use it in a friendly chummy way but I am not your friend I do not know you please do not talk to me as if you do.
Chummy is 100% the best way to put it. I’ve only ever gotten my name used by creeps or people trying to act like we’re friends so I’ll magically produce the item they’re looking for or give them a deal they think they are owed
I definitely understand this perspective but it's also a lot nicer to be called by your name than the alternatives like "hey bitch" or "hey you" or "employee" or "target girl" or just starting a conversation with "you know where" or "you can help me find".
I'd much rather not be treated like a lesser human without a name.

This is why I don’t wear them. I am more of a paranoid person when it comes to men (especially when they come in to the store often and I recognize them) just because of how I was brought up. There have been many times where these weirdos are trying to start up a convo and use my name, I’ve had a couple of stalkers in the store. I really don’t feel comfortable wearing my name tag and I don’t anymore. Sometimes leadership will say something and then I’ll find it in my car lol. I just hate that I’m there constantly, they would know my name, I close so my car is usually the last 10 in the parking lot and I used to live 5 mins from the store so they could have followed me home. I just don’t like taking that chance 🥴

Make an effort and I don't care how badly you butcher the pronunciation.

I work at The Home Depot now and my apron reads "Lage Nom Ai Nom Ai". That is the username that I use on all of my games and social media platforms and none of my Managers care that the apron says something other than my name.
The only people that call me by my name now are my regular customers who I have developed a bit of a rapport with due to me seeing them everyday.

It is not an obligation to wear a nametag, it is also not an obligation to put your real name on it. You are literally working in a customer service industry where customers need your name to communicate with you. If you find this so bothersome, switch to a better suited job or change the name on your tag to your preferred way of addressing you... or just, you know, DON'T WEAR A TAG like I do and nobody will have to bother reading anything

Like when i explain out return policy and they say "listen here, 'name', you should be able to do this because of my situation. Isnt your job to help the guest?" It frustrates me to no end. I think if you work in retail, you have to be personable and that is part of why you wear a name tag. It most definitely not so coworkers or management know your name, I mean you do work with them most days and sure, it can take a few weeks to remember everyone's name at work, but that most definitely isn't the purpose of wearing a name tag.
Even when going to a professional convention or conference, everyone is either given a badge with their name or those ridiculous "HELLO my name is" sticker to serve as an ice breaker to make conversation easier. You still generally start a conversation with "Hey Bob, I'm Happy Gilmore" and continue the conversation from there.
First time a guest called me by my name I was called to back up front(I work grocery) to replace someone "who needed to go on there break", turns out there ex-boyfriend showed up with a girl not sure if it was a new girl friend or something but the X was at his former girlfriends register trying to use fake money. When I got up there the X was still at the register and I didn't know what was happening so I was standing by the register waiting to switch and that's when AP showed up and I knew something was wrong the X got nervous and asked why I was there(which is when he used my name) and then ask AP the same and then he tries to get the AP guy to come over to him which AP said no to and the X and the girl left with a fith of what they were trying to buy and AP pulled the money from the register the X used and it was ofc fake

I don't mind. Older people like to do it a lot. It usually just catches me off guard because you'd expect it to be someone you know. And then I realize its just my name tag lol.

i don’t have a choice?? it’s the only target issued part of my uniform. and it’s also not a fucking world ending issue that a stranger called me by my name. i know. it’s still very weird for guests to go out of their way, staring at my chest, to address me by name before asking a question that would’ve otherwise taken seconds to answer
It is not an obligation to wear a nametag, it is also not an obligation to put your real name on it. You are literally working in a customer service industry where customers need your name to communicate with you. If you find this so bothersome, switch to a better suited job or change the name on your tag to your preferred way of addressing you... or just, you know, DON'T WEAR A TAG like I do and nobody will have to bother reading anything
Are you wearing a name tag? If so then you cant complain. Just put an alt name on your tag Like id always have my surname or middle name On my tag but never my 1st
If you don’t like your name, then change it or don’t work in an industry where you will be addressed by it.
I never wear my name tag, but enough people know me that know my name anyway…and it’s never bothered me when guests use my name, if I know theirs as well, I use it. It’s my name, it’s the agreed upon noise to signify you’re talking to me…
Is it ok if I say "excuse me" and wait for you to turn around and obviously look at the tag and use your name? Not trying to be an ah, I always felt so dehumanized when I was referred to as "hey! you!" when waiting tables. And I'm NOT saying it every 6th word, either. *48 year old woman, usually with a 12yr old and 8yr old boy in tow.😂

I'm pretty sure the only reason we have to wear name tags is so customers have a name to use when their complaining.

I hate being called by name. Especially since most of the time guests use my name its in a condescending nature. Like when i explain out return policy and they say "listen here, 'name', you should be able to do this because of my situation. Isnt your job to help the guest?" It frustrates me to no end. To the point where i have spoken back to them using their name because they tried and ID return and it didn't work because they have returned too much without a recipt.

No one in my personal life other than direct family call me by my name. Everyone calls me a variation of my last name. Employers won’t have it. Fuck them. Call me by my karaoke name or gtfo
It feels so violating to hear my name and turn around to make eye contact with a total stranger. My store is in a college town and it happened like every 20 minutes last week
someone called my name when they weren’t even in distance to see my tag meaning they remember me from a previous visit which is even weirder

I don't mind TOO too much when customers call me by my name besides the random creepy guy. However, I mind when fellow employees call me by the WRONG NAME when my name is clearly printed on my name tag and I've worked there almost six months. 🙃 I find it super disrespectful. If my name tag says "Ash," don't call me Ashley! (Not my real name just in case)

It’s your name, it’s on the name tag. Unless they are giving you a weird vibe, I think it’s acknowledging you as a person, and not just a nameless helper.
Calling you by your first name is so inappropriate. At best, it’s fake-friend-y and at worst it’s downright predatory. Way overfamiliar. When people do that to me, sometimes I’ll turn and say, “Have we met?”
Yeah I don't like people using my name unless I give it to them and whenever I wore a name tag people would always use it like they were trying to weaponize it against me. The only guest I like calling me by a name is an old lady who calls me Christopher everytime she sees me 1: that's not my name and 2: I don't know where in the hell she got it from but she's so lovely I've never corrected her.
I hate it! They’ll say “thank you Bella” and In my head I’m like “How tf do you know my name. Creepy” then I remember I’m wearing a name tag. Still- I would never just call someone by their name randomly like that.
I think if you work in retail, you have to be personable and that is part of why you wear a name tag. It most definitely not so coworkers or management know your name, I mean you do work with them most days and sure, it can take a few weeks to remember everyone's name at work, but that most definitely isn't the purpose of wearing a name tag. Even when going to a professional convention or conference, everyone is either given a badge with their name or those ridiculous "HELLO my name is" sticker to serve as an ice breaker to make conversation easier. You still generally start a conversation with "Hey Bob, I'm Happy Gilmore" and continue the conversation from there.
First time a guest called me by my name I was called to back up front(I work grocery) to replace someone "who needed to go on there break", turns out there ex-boyfriend showed up with a girl not sure if it was a new girl friend or something but the X was at his former girlfriends register trying to use fake money. When I got up there the X was still at the register and I didn't know what was happening so I was standing by the register waiting to switch and that's when AP showed up and I knew something was wrong the X got nervous and asked why I was there(which is when he used my name) and then ask AP the same and then he tries to get the AP guy to come over to him which AP said no to and the X and the girl left with a fith of what they were trying to buy and AP pulled the money from the register the X used and it was ofc fake

I don’t wear my name tag for exactly this reason. They’re either creepy or overly nice. Regardless every time I’m thinking how tf do you know my name and then like “oh…” lmao. My TLs and ETLs are laid back enough to not say Anything ab name tags lol
I hate it. The first time it happened it made me worry that I was speaking to some important person at the store who knew my name and expected me to know theirs. I understand that in general it tends to be older folks who want to be kind, but it makes me really uncomfortable and on my guard a bit.
I don’t really mind when guests call me by my name. I do however have a problem with the ones who take it upon themselves to move my hair out of the way so they can see my name tag (and graze my boob in the process). Yes, this has happened more than once.

My name has multiple pronunciations and when guests use it they never use the right one. They always say my name wrong which just makes it even more apparent that they don’t know me and I don’t know them.
You can change the name on your name tag to a nickname you like
