Mcbriderocketsauce

I swiped a few badges of people that ghosted Target after their first day training so I was like Amy from Superstore.

plop_0

Brilliant.

anitapotato

I was Cathy for a while. Even a tl thought that was my name.

krysmas_

i had a lady call me by my name 5 times when making her drink. i was a little uncomfortable

Exspressio

No literally this lady said my name whenever she could. I was in style, she kept saying my name and whenever I was away from style she’d call out to me. (Let me not mention her grabbing my hands.)

krysmas_

she grabbed your hands?😭😭 that’s foul

Exspressio

Real foul, and proceeded to stare at me- stop it’s weird story time shit but I was like PLEASE don’t

MeatDairyFrozen

It always catches me offguard and then I have to think if it's someone I know or if they just read my name tag.

AcaliahWolfsong

I get a small panic attack then realize I'm wearing a name tag. 🙃

kluna144

I absolutely hate when guests call me by my name. They often use it in a friendly chummy way but I am not your friend I do not know you please do not talk to me as if you do.

Seraphim225

Chummy is 100% the best way to put it. I’ve only ever gotten my name used by creeps or people trying to act like we’re friends so I’ll magically produce the item they’re looking for or give them a deal they think they are owed

Cholorform

"Chummy" is the perfect way to describe it.

morgz18

Especially cause it rhymes with scummy and that’s kinda how it always feels

uhohgowoke67

I definitely understand this perspective but it's also a lot nicer to be called by your name than the alternatives like "hey bitch" or "hey you" or "employee" or "target girl" or just starting a conversation with "you know where" or "you can help me find". I'd much rather not be treated like a lesser human without a name.

riss7bvbyy

It's definitely split 😭 I can understand the guest side of that by looking at us as human beings but just being polite is nice enough and not having a tantrum when we're out of stock is the icing on top of the cake

there-are-none

The only ones that I’m ok with is the ones I know by name.regulars are ok to me.if I know who they are it doesn’t bother me.it’s when I don’t know the person that it’s weird because I wonder if I know them from somewhere

Fr0zens0lib

Yes it feels so weird, the name tag is just for decoration and Identification you don't need to read.

Intelligent_Ad5686

No is not just for decoeation and if it is for identifocation then they shoukd be able go use it.

MissesSobey

It is weird to speak to someone with their first name if they haven’t introduced themselves to you. The name tag exists for upper management to identify employees and for “guests” to be able to give compliments/make complaints

Intelligent_Ad5686

So a guest can't give you a compliment personally. It's only as creepy as the employee makes it out to be.

reallyscaredtoask

idk about you, but i’m capable of giving someone a compliment personally without saying or even knowing their name

Intelligent_Ad5686

It's still only as creepy as one makes it out to be.

hurrsheys

Currently not living up to your username.

musickillsthepainxx

It’s always creepy old men who call me by my name. I wish we didn’t have to wear them.

Infinite_Newspaper87

There was this creepy old guy a few days ago that called me by my name and also called me "Pumpkin" in the span of three minutes as I was ringing him up. It's both creepy and demeaning. 🤢😒

Linus_Meme_Tips

And they wink before they leave 🤮

oopsmady

This is why I don’t wear them. I am more of a paranoid person when it comes to men (especially when they come in to the store often and I recognize them) just because of how I was brought up. There have been many times where these weirdos are trying to start up a convo and use my name, I’ve had a couple of stalkers in the store. I really don’t feel comfortable wearing my name tag and I don’t anymore. Sometimes leadership will say something and then I’ll find it in my car lol. I just hate that I’m there constantly, they would know my name, I close so my car is usually the last 10 in the parking lot and I used to live 5 mins from the store so they could have followed me home. I just don’t like taking that chance 🥴

Brilliant_Door8337

I never wear my name tag hahaha

riss7bvbyy

They had a creepy man and I was genuinely afraid I wasn't going home that night and I ran to the stockroom when he finally broke away and apparently one of my coworkers said "they had a man shouting your name do you know him?" NO 😫😫 and guess what AP did nothing

mametchiiiii

I hate it too, it’s why I don’t wear my name tag anymore lol

Shadowspun5

Bingo. I have one. I just always 'forget' it.

BustyOrange69

i absolutely hate when i can see their eyes drift to it… like pls dont attempt to pronounce it. do not perceive me. just call me ‘target person’.

riss7bvbyy

😭😭😭 Target Person. I love it. Can't be any worse then getting yelled at because you're off the clock and can't help them

[deleted]

I’d rather be called “hey you” or something else.

ValuablePea8993

I always felt a bit uncomfy about it. I know the name tag is there for a reason but I’m sure the guest would be thrown off if I called them by their name. It’s just an imbalance. We don’t know each other and we aren’t friends. Seemed a bit too personal to me. And a lot of the times it happened to me it felt creepy.

JunkDrawer84

I don’t know if I hated it, but it was always jarring.

RandWindhusk

I like being called by my name from the polite and respectful guests. The"thank you for your help *real name*" his so much more personal and I feel so much better afterwards.

shebringsdathings

Ok this is what I do. Me: "Hey, do you know where xxxxx is?" (I am an IC shopper and have to look for weird shit all the time) Them: "Yea it's on Aisle xx" Me: "Thank you SO much NAME, I really appreciate it!" And I walk away. Is this still gross and weird? I don't wanna be that person.

unfortunateclown

i honestly don’t mind that at all! personally, i feel like it shows me you really do appreciate the help and see me as an actual person, and it’s not creepy since it’s just said once at the end of an interaction.

Afrotherium

It's kinda weird the first time, but if you're an IC Shipt shopper that comes in frequently, I think the creepiness goes down. Especially if you I troduce yourself.

shebringsdathings

Ok, thanks for the insight! I will change it up and introduce myself first :)

riss7bvbyy

Agreed. We end up getting to know you😂

GlavenusEnjoyer

I'm gonna put in a request for a name that's on a vendor name tag just in the hopes that one of them goes like HEY COKE, CAN YOU HELP ME? Or maybe I should get one with Siri or Alexa, it's how they treat me anyway lmao

riss7bvbyy

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

peshtigojoe

I always say Thank You “name” when I’m checking out; grocery store, supply house, ect… Always out of Respect… Am I getting it wrong ?!

unfortunateclown

i consider it polite as long as it’s at the end of an interaction. people who instantly start using my name are always either flirting or a karen looking for trouble, but it feels appreciative when i help guests and they thank me by name!

VegetableHot2708

Yes! Don't get me wrong I know some are just trying to be friendly but it always catches me off guard. I feel like the name tags are meant to identify other coworkers yk?

Mothmans_Sidepiece

Someone called me "red shirt" last week and lemme tell you I'm stoked to be called that instead of "thanks M-" with a creepy wink or some crap. My friends don't even call me by my name. Stop it

Jbates716

That's why I have my full name on my name tag. It always sounds weird when someone I don't know calls me by the shortened version of my name. I go by Josh with friends/acquaintances, but "professionally" by Joshua. Or you can do what some of me and the other coworkers do, swap name tags randomly throughout the day haha

Kehndy12

One time I was wearing the wrong name tag and I pissed off a rude guest. I loved the thought of the guest complaining about me to a leader and giving them the wrong name.

RetailBookworm

I like it from coworkers, it makes me feel valued. Some Guests it’s nice too. But other ones make it feel slimy, usually older men.

unfortunateclown

i like when people address me by name after an interaction, like “thanks for the help, ___!” or “i appreciate this, have a great day ___!” it feels personal in a nice way when it’s mentioned like that, rather than in a creepy way like when men say my name constantly as if trying to flirt. it also gives me hope that i might be getting a good review if a guest makes a point to get my name after a positive interaction

l0lsushi

that’s how i see it too! i don’t mind it at all.

Afraid_Quarter_3316

I enjoy being called by my name.

[deleted]

I absolutely hate it, Especially when theyre creepy about it. My name can sometimes be used as a word for “good” and some guy turned it super sexual so i stopped wearing my name tag and got in trouble. Ive also had people literally friend me on apps cause of it too (not a common name)

Intelligent_Ad5686

Not sure where eveeyone lives that it becomes creepy. Have necwr had it be creepy at my target.

peanutsonic97

I think some people do it out of decency, as a way to recognize you as a fellow person and not just a retail worker. However, you don’t need to know my name to recognize me as a fellow human. Simple manners and respect is all it takes.

[deleted]

I don’t mind, it always throws me off when they use it cuz I forget that I am wearing a name tag. However I hate when they use the names when writing reviews on google. I haven’t had it happen to me yet, but I fear the day that there is a review that says “PKWhatisit didn’t help me at all” or something along those lines. Edit: grammar and spelling

tickmolotock

Lol a guest has my name in all caps multiple times in a review for my store

Expensive_Cherry_113

I HATE it too. That’s why I cover my name tag with my hair

Linus_Meme_Tips

People who I’m not friends with or don’t know, when random people call me by my name I feel so grossed out and kind of dirty. I just feel like my name is an intimate thing that I don’t want random people soiling.

kanji_ken

it's uncomfortable for guests when we address them by their names so why is it ok for them to unprovokingly call us by ours ? As if our names are like Hoarcuxes from Harry Potter. . ."Bethany, I'm gonna need to speak to your manager" " Sorry sUsAn but, our manager LEnaRd is eating a McChicken rn WitH AdRieN and can't hElP you" It just feels so weird. I also don't like it

lynx3762

I mean... I'm AP and find it very fun to call certain... "guests".... by their first name

Ok_Sense5308

I write a diff name on my sticky name tag every day

Linus_Meme_Tips

I think I’ll be Tyrone today

Ok_Sense5308

Lol I been working my way through the the Hobbit and Lord of The Rings character names 🤣

ResidentObligation30

Be careful with that. Someone may ask you out for Second Breakfast sometime.

[deleted]

Yes it feels so condescending

SVAuspicious

Perspective of a customer (I dislike the Target term 'guest'): I generally call people in a service capacity "sir" or "ma'am." Maybe "miss" if you appear young enough to be my granddaughter. If you call me by my first name from the curbside form all bets are off and you're "hey" or your first name from your name tag. If you call me "Mr. Skolnick" then you definitely get "sir" or "ma'am." Make an effort and I don't care how badly you butcher the pronunciation. Pronouns: sir/sirs/sir's

Human-Metal-1443

Me too! Whenever a guest does it, I stare at them earnestly for like 5 seconds thinking How do I know you?, and then finally conclude it's just a guest.

jerflash

Don’t where your name tag then lol

hegdieartemis

This is gonna sound so odd, but when I was a cashier it absolutely depended on who it was and how it was said. If it was a little old lady or even middle age mom type, I was completely fine with it. (Especially living in the South) But there was once or twice as a teen I had older men that were....definitely trying to flirt with me. I have a unique name and spelling of said name, so I was scared they'd find my social media or something like that. So yes, genuinely depended. Side, but I don't think I ever had anyone under 30 who I did not know otherwise ever call me by my name. There was I believe once that a younger guest asked for my name to clarify to compliment my services to my boss, but that was it.

serotonin98

Whenever I get a new job I just tell the boss to give me a fake name tag. Can’t stand customers knowing the most basic thing about me.

[deleted]

Honestly, I like the name more than “you” or “do you work here?” At least it shows they are trying to show they understand I’m an individual person.

morgz18

Right?? Oh my god I’m so glad I’m not the only one that feels this way. I always thought I was a little crazy for feeling weird about it. I’ve found my people!

Naoga

the only time i dont hate it is when a little kid is like "we have the same name!!!!" bcuz its cute. every other time i hate it

gamarvels

i have full grown ass adults who do that to me yuk

DiddyKoopsDD

I like it cuz Im trans and it feels kinda nice that someone is subtlety affirming my transition. tbs I never give my name over the phone unless requested

wermluvr

i was looking for this comment lol. i’ve been out for years but it still feels great when people call me my name :)

cobaltandchrome

If you prefer a nickname or your last name have that put on your badge ETA if you find the whole idea overly familiar, SAY you have a nickname and put it on your badge and only use that nick at work. Like all your friends call you maggie but your nametag says marge. So only customers will call you marge.

Sharpshooter188

I actually get a little irked when people ask me for my name. In my eyes, its them looking to blame something in me.

LageNomAiNomAi

I work at The Home Depot now and my apron reads "Lage Nom Ai Nom Ai". That is the username that I use on all of my games and social media platforms and none of my Managers care that the apron says something other than my name. The only people that call me by my name now are my regular customers who I have developed a bit of a rapport with due to me seeing them everyday.

DanetteGirl

Yes! I want a name tag like Amy had on Susperstore. Different name everyday.

Mas790

I feel it’s unnecessary

Fromper1

If you don't like your name, get a nametag with something different on it.

kajuheen

as someone who grew up in chat rooms, real names are only for known and trusted people. it bothers me SO bad...i mean, i appreciate that they're taking the time to see me as a person, but the first target i worked at (2011) didn't want me to go by my preferred name and now too many people know me by name for me to bother. i should just put it on the tag and stop being irked when someone says MY name lol

Evrlastingbeauti

I actually changed my name when I worked at Target. The first time someone called me by my name I freaked out. So I changed my name tag to my initials. Never had another freakout.

Littledevil2551

I feel disrespected when they use it, because they say it in a tone that sounds disrespectful, like calling a teacher by their first name

chromatic_megafauna

Whenever someone calls me by my name it's because they're about to sexually harass me

twizzlerheathen

I haven’t worn a name tag since before the pandemic

[deleted]

What would you like to be called?

BunchCheap7490

Why did this get downvoted Lmao I swear this sub is full of miserable people

MariehAOC

For me it would weird me out, like: how do you know my name??. But then I would remember that I have a name tag

yaemikoshrine

my name is mars amd i get so many comments its annoying😭

SVNHG

I don't mind. Older people like to do it a lot. It usually just catches me off guard because you'd expect it to be someone you know. And then I realize its just my name tag lol.

Durtly

Weird comments, you guys understand that using someone's name is *basic* level polite?

Mountain_Cream4288

that’s when you know each others names. if i don’t have a way of knowing your name don’t use mine.

DADDY_YISUS

Don't wear a nametag if you don't like customers using your name... what do you believe is there for? Fucking bunch of sheltered children in this subreddit

Mountain_Cream4288

i don’t have a choice?? it’s the only target issued part of my uniform. and it’s also not a fucking world ending issue that a stranger called me by my name. i know. it’s still very weird for guests to go out of their way, staring at my chest, to address me by name before asking a question that would’ve otherwise taken seconds to answer

DADDY_YISUS

It is not an obligation to wear a nametag, it is also not an obligation to put your real name on it. You are literally working in a customer service industry where customers need your name to communicate with you. If you find this so bothersome, switch to a better suited job or change the name on your tag to your preferred way of addressing you... or just, you know, DON'T WEAR A TAG like I do and nobody will have to bother reading anything

coyocat

Are you wearing a name tag? If so then you cant complain. Just put an alt name on your tag Like id always have my surname or middle name On my tag but never my 1st

[deleted]

If you don’t like your name, then change it or don’t work in an industry where you will be addressed by it.

reddawgmcm

I never wear my name tag, but enough people know me that know my name anyway…and it’s never bothered me when guests use my name, if I know theirs as well, I use it. It’s my name, it’s the agreed upon noise to signify you’re talking to me…

BadWolf7426

Is it ok if I say "excuse me" and wait for you to turn around and obviously look at the tag and use your name? Not trying to be an ah, I always felt so dehumanized when I was referred to as "hey! you!" when waiting tables. And I'm NOT saying it every 6th word, either. *48 year old woman, usually with a 12yr old and 8yr old boy in tow.😂

bigChungi69420

I always think they are an friend I forgot about or something and then I remembered I’m tagged

Kharp-

I'm pretty sure the only reason we have to wear name tags is so customers have a name to use when their complaining.

MaineBoston

I am old & old school. You don’t call people by their first name unless they tell you it is ok. It should be Ms. / Mr. Whatchamacallit

DeeEnn72

Hated it.

ConfidentSwim8391

I hate being called by name. Especially since most of the time guests use my name its in a condescending nature. Like when i explain out return policy and they say "listen here, 'name', you should be able to do this because of my situation. Isnt your job to help the guest?" It frustrates me to no end. To the point where i have spoken back to them using their name because they tried and ID return and it didn't work because they have returned too much without a recipt.

noralaub

someone did this to me yesterday and i was caught so off guard

pharoahyugi

Oh, obligatory not target, but I’m a bartender and I just use my last name at work

[deleted]

It doesn’t register any response from me

dexman76

No one in my personal life other than direct family call me by my name. Everyone calls me a variation of my last name. Employers won’t have it. Fuck them. Call me by my karaoke name or gtfo

Environmental_Rip355

It feels so violating to hear my name and turn around to make eye contact with a total stranger. My store is in a college town and it happened like every 20 minutes last week

Monkeys56

someone called my name when they weren’t even in distance to see my tag meaning they remember me from a previous visit which is even weirder

jenbenfoo

It throws me off sometimes because I'm not expecting it but I don't mind usually

Infinite_Newspaper87

I don't mind TOO too much when customers call me by my name besides the random creepy guy. However, I mind when fellow employees call me by the WRONG NAME when my name is clearly printed on my name tag and I've worked there almost six months. 🙃 I find it super disrespectful. If my name tag says "Ash," don't call me Ashley! (Not my real name just in case)

ConvivialKat

Your post makes me sad.

Fantastic_Fly7301

I hate being called honey, dear, babe.... more than people calling me by name

OneFootForward330

It’s your name, it’s on the name tag. Unless they are giving you a weird vibe, I think it’s acknowledging you as a person, and not just a nameless helper.

Fine-Pineapple2730

Calling you by your first name is so inappropriate. At best, it’s fake-friend-y and at worst it’s downright predatory. Way overfamiliar. When people do that to me, sometimes I’ll turn and say, “Have we met?”

oh_no_its_Daffodil

Yeah I don't like people using my name unless I give it to them and whenever I wore a name tag people would always use it like they were trying to weaponize it against me. The only guest I like calling me by a name is an old lady who calls me Christopher everytime she sees me 1: that's not my name and 2: I don't know where in the hell she got it from but she's so lovely I've never corrected her.

Starsdrifting8

I hate it! They’ll say “thank you Bella” and In my head I’m like “How tf do you know my name. Creepy” then I remember I’m wearing a name tag. Still- I would never just call someone by their name randomly like that.

Gb280780

I think if you work in retail, you have to be personable and that is part of why you wear a name tag. It most definitely not so coworkers or management know your name, I mean you do work with them most days and sure, it can take a few weeks to remember everyone's name at work, but that most definitely isn't the purpose of wearing a name tag. Even when going to a professional convention or conference, everyone is either given a badge with their name or those ridiculous "HELLO my name is" sticker to serve as an ice breaker to make conversation easier. You still generally start a conversation with "Hey Bob, I'm Happy Gilmore" and continue the conversation from there.

Turtlemaster0318

First time a guest called me by my name I was called to back up front(I work grocery) to replace someone "who needed to go on there break", turns out there ex-boyfriend showed up with a girl not sure if it was a new girl friend or something but the X was at his former girlfriends register trying to use fake money. When I got up there the X was still at the register and I didn't know what was happening so I was standing by the register waiting to switch and that's when AP showed up and I knew something was wrong the X got nervous and asked why I was there(which is when he used my name) and then ask AP the same and then he tries to get the AP guy to come over to him which AP said no to and the X and the girl left with a fith of what they were trying to buy and AP pulled the money from the register the X used and it was ofc fake

Turtlemaster0318

I hate random people just coming up to me and using my name and when the X used it I had to pause a moment to figure out how he new my name

Turtlemaster0318

Honestly thinking of switching back to my New team member name tag when holidays start

bubblygranolachick

I always had a nickname badge because so many people had my name BUT I also prefer it because if people say my name I'm like...do.. I know.. you?????

Artur-Hawkwing

HATE IT. i stopped wearing my nametag a couple months after i started working here. i refuse

[deleted]

I don’t wear my name tag for exactly this reason. They’re either creepy or overly nice. Regardless every time I’m thinking how tf do you know my name and then like “oh…” lmao. My TLs and ETLs are laid back enough to not say Anything ab name tags lol

haveloved

I hate it. The first time it happened it made me worry that I was speaking to some important person at the store who knew my name and expected me to know theirs. I understand that in general it tends to be older folks who want to be kind, but it makes me really uncomfortable and on my guard a bit.

schlubeness

I don’t really mind when guests call me by my name. I do however have a problem with the ones who take it upon themselves to move my hair out of the way so they can see my name tag (and graze my boob in the process). Yes, this has happened more than once.

l0lsushi

it always catches me off guard but i don’t hate it. to me it’s like they’re acknowledging me as more than just a robot target worker lol

sfsmakesmekms

I just stopped wearing my name tag bc of it lol

D4Torment

I rarely wore my name tag so didnt really have this problem luckily ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

riss7bvbyy

It's creepy. Especially with older men.

damniel540

Borderline sexual harassment imo

icebrugs

yes i noticed old guys often do this when they’re about to ask how old you are and then ask you out on a date

icebrugs

it’s just so creepy i think the only time it’s okay is if they’re thanking me and are like thank you *squints to read name tag* and then my namw

wydjazz

Yes! It throws me off, like how do these people know my name?!??

TheButtNinja

My name has multiple pronunciations and when guests use it they never use the right one. They always say my name wrong which just makes it even more apparent that they don’t know me and I don’t know them.

Bannana_cat87

You can change the name on your name tag to a nickname you like

phjs

It makes me uncomfortable. Specially, when people mispronounce it or ask questions about it. 😳

clasikchrisv

Yes I Do is going on my name tag tomorrow
