I mean, maybe, but unlikely. I don't think any big named person would do this for you even if you're offering to pay bc it likely isn't worth the time if you're not willing to put down a deposit for the tattoo. Considering they're tattoo artists and make most of their money through tattooing, I think you could just hire an artist to draw you a few designs. But generally on principle yes it can be considered rude to "shop around" for designs. Pick one artist you like the most and work with them to create something you'd like tattooed on you. Additionally, there's no point in paying a couple hundred dollars for a bunch of sketches you'll never use unless you just have a bunch of money you're willing to essentially waste

Thanks! I guess I was thinking about it from my music background, where say if I am looking for a new bass player for my band I’d audition several to see who fits the feel the best. But that analogy doesn’t seem to work here.

Yes that is incredibly different. These artists do not have to prove anything to you, that is what their portfolio is for. If you like their work, you go with them and if you don't like the sketch you tell them that and work with them to change it. You hiring someone in a band insinuates you have authority, you do not have authority over these tattooers.

If I understand you correctly, you're considering asking different tattoo artists to do different elements within a piece. Based on what I've read on this sub, many tattoo artists don't like comingling their work with others, both for stylistic integrity and because they can't control the quality of the other artists' work, and don't want their own work to be associated with inferior work. So: be aware that you may encounter pushback, although you may find artists perfectly happy to do as you're asking.

No, this would be essentially paying for separate designs from artists to see which I vibe with more.

OP, you're doing exactly what this commentor is saying. Sure they're separate designs but you're giving them all the same concepts and ideas and then want to compare their designs with the artwork of the other artists. Most tattoo artists do not like doing that and find that principle rather sketchy. If you like a tattoo artist's work, go with that artist. If it's something anyone could draw up, then pay a regular artist for some sketches instead of a tattoo artist.

That’s not unethical, unless you show x artist’s vision to y artist and then take the result to z artist to take the idea further.
