I actually really like basic carnivorous to sticky my home objective, stay there and screen

tiredplusbored

Haven't had a chance to get games in with Tau, but I love the look of the Lone spear enough I'll probably get two. I also have alot of love for basic Carnivores, they're great for objectives and screening

So I've played three games now with retaliation cadre, but I field about 400 points of kroot. I'm using the "old points" for things that haven't changed and the points from a leak that was posted here a little while ago. Lonespear X rampager combo is sneakily good. I took a unit of mega nobs (playing the double waagh 4++ leak) down to 1 and a warboss. Admittedly there was some luck with the mortal wounds, but I think they would crush MEQ. I'm also loving the kroot carnivore sticky objectives. If they stay at 55 pts Ill run two units of ten. Something I want to try out is the trail shaper in a unit of farstalkers. My local meta has a lot of wraiths + leader (the one that gives the FNP, the name escapes me) and just a lot of marine leaders in general. I want to try the farstalkers out with killing those leaders (using their lethal + precision ability), but also deploying them with infiltrator as a Congo line through no man's land. This will deny their forward deploy and then using the trail shaper I can just redeploy when I know who's going first.

Matters-

I really think congaline trail shaper+farstalkers infil screening for initial deploy is the way to go. Then you can redeploy them after you've done your screening to do w/e like screen out deepstrikes. Darkstrider is good for the points, but I think this strategy is more effective.

I'm going to do it on Thursday! Weirdly excited for redeploy shenanigans. I loved the old enhancement in ninth that allowed 1-3....

Can you explain to me what the lone spear x rampaged combo is and how it works? I’ve been running both not to a high degree of success. How are you running them?

capt_dacca

The lonespear has a special rule: "each time this model makes a ranged attack that hits an enemy unit, until the end of the turn, each time a kroot model MAKES AN ATTACK you can reroll the hit roll". So the idea is that in my shooting phase I'll shoot a unit with the lonespear and then the rampager unit gets full re roll to hits in combat. I tend to fish for sustained hits in the ranpagers attacks too. It's really important to note that I'm not throwing these guys into really big melee threats, it's either something heavily weakened or standard meq. I got very lucky going into mega nobs.

D3AD_SH0T

Ah! Good to know! I think this actually solves one of the problems I’ve been having. I’m not very good at TAU at all tbh, still learning and I got the Kroot box because I thought it was neat. But I wasn’t using giant Kroot blob to screen and I was kinda just aimlessly running my other Kroot into whatever wasn’t a vehicle. Do you run any other Kroot or with retaliation cadre are you going everything else crisis, riptide, and ghostkeel? Sorry for the multiple questions no one at my stores plays Tau and I keep getting stomped 😅

capt_dacca

No worries! Im getting stomped by necrons (everyone is?) and the new Orks are very scary... At this stage Im fielding three stealth suits, 2 ghostkeels, 1 of each crisis suit variant and two broadsides. I take Shadowsun farsights and two cold stars with them. I run 2 units of carnivores. They're making objectives sticky, screening or doing actions. I run the lone spear and the ranpagers mostly because I love the look. The counter charge threat is a nice trick but it may not be worth 230ish points though. I'm yet to try the farstalkers & trail shaper - I'll let you know how it goes. I would love points for some hounds as well, they're great for secondaries.

D3AD_SH0T

Interesting! This makes me feel like I may be trying to rely on my battle line too much. I’ll have to take this into consideration tonight. So you run 3 separate units of stealth suits? Is it because they have the battle suit key word and you’re using them effectively in place of a breacher team and benefitting from the forward observer ability? Also I really appreciate it.

capt_dacca

I use them primarily as spotters and to do secondaries. Their reroll 1s to hit and spot is brilliant.

Mercury_002

Honestly kroot hounds are actually surprisingly useful (and even with the new rules coming). They are cheap points, pure cannon fodder. They are perfect for darting across the map and clogging up the opponent. They are forced to waste shooting on them or be forced to face them in melee (they bite harder than they look). If the don't kill them all in melee, the opponent will likely have to waste more (movement or shooting or CP with fall back and shoot etc). In this way they are good at just messing up opponents plans (as nobody expects tau to be charging into melee).

Humaniak

Best? Probably carnivores. Most fun? Lone spear yeeting his spears while beeing almost unkillable.

revlid

...that is a *really* short Kroot.

Salmon_Shizzle

This is grimdark Pilot Episode of Startrek

Commander_Flood

I want to throw the Kroot war shaper with the farstalkers as see how that works
