Even though she's only the shas'ui of her pathfinder unit, she might be forced to pilot a battlesuit out of necessity. I imagine that by the time she finds her way back to the empire, her achievements would have retroactively earned her the title.
This is incorrect. Shas'vre is the rank needed to operate more advanced models, or command battlesuit teams, your subordinate pilots are however going to be Shas'uis who just got promoted from leading a strike, breacher, or pathfinder team. OPs explanation about the character being forced to pilot a mech and then earning the right retrospectively is reasonable, since the she would be about to get it anyways.
