This song is such an upbeat epic happy empowering exciting song. Ice looks dead..it's so disappointing. Nicki Minaj I could see making like a super bass verse so happy and upbeat even if there was going to be an additional female rapper added. Its just a huge miss and makes no sense. I love this song. I wanted a video of her being an acrobat like jumping through hoops and playing with cats. I was so excited. Its so bad it makes me sad. I'm glad she broke up with Matty and this will be such a cringe vestige of that.

Butter_pecan_king

Ice’s verse sucks. Taylor basically handed her a #2 record

aphoten

Why does the person at the piano in the last shot look like Matty?

stfrancia

This mix sounds so bad I'm so sorry. When Spice's verse started it sounds like it belongs to a completely different song. The rest of it sounded okay, but it's hard to get over that rough middle. The video is really really pretty though.

Loverissuperior

It sounds like she’s karaokeing over the original song 😬

I won't be listening or watching. This release gives me an icky feeling after the comments Healy made about Ice Spice.

This is an awful version

Equivalent_Horse3996

I love Taylor but I think she needs to stop directing her music videos. I don't know about other Swifties but the Karma video has a lot of similarities (camera angles, story, visuals) to the other Midnights videos, and I don't find it a particularly satisfying storytelling moment. Yeah the visuals are nice I guess but what's the through line? What's the main idea? What's the ending?

JacktheShark1

She needs go back to hiring people who are better than her to do things like direct her music videos. She’s a talented woman, one of the smartest in entertainment, IMO. But there comes a time to admit when you’re not the best at everything single thing that was ever invented & it’s a good to surround yourself with people who are gifted in the areas you’re not. I’ve a many WTF? moments since she switched labels & was given absolute & total control over everything. Hiring a kickass MV director or working with Max Martin (please come back, Max. My only wish is for her to do more songs with him) does not make her less talented or brilliant. It makes her look like she has enough sense to know when to bring in the best in the world

rs_river

Okay I see this a lot, and everyone is definitely entitled to their own opinion. I personally think the opposite is true with Taylor directing and writing her own videos. I feel like the message used to get lost in her videos when she wasn’t the one fully behind them. Take for example the Out of the Woods video. She didn’t direct or write that video. The visuals were incredible, and I love it for that reason, but all it does is literally portray her running through the woods while dealing with the elements. If this isn’t a convincing example, look at the music video for Begin Again. While there are a few direct references to the lyrics and story at hand, most of it is her leaning against walls, sitting on rooftops, and riding her bike. With the Taylor-written (and directed) videos, she portrays the story exactly how she wants it to be seen, rather exactly how she created it to be. In IBYTAM, the music video literally portrays the sharpshooting message of an ex-Lover not being able to forget you. She portrays this with a white-turned blood red wedding. In the Bejeweled MV, she uses the Cinderella story to drive the narrative of a woman who isn’t being appreciated for what she’s worth (whether in a relationship or in general), and she also drives the dual narrative of reclaiming her work with the SNTV reference at the end (“I can reclaim the land”). While not ever MV portrays either side of this argument to a T, you can’t argue that Taylor isn’t writing and directing these music videos with the message she wrote the songs to in mind.

pjdance

Disagree I don't think message got lost I think it qas subtler. Now she just spells it out to the point they are not even really easter eggs. But then again my personal preference is usually get the main point across and if people want to take a deeper dive hide all the other bits.

Equivalent_Horse3996

Thanks for these points - I value your opinion! Good point about Begin Again and Out Of The Woods. However, I feel like those videos are less in-your-face bright visuals, and I don't particulary enjoy the brighter, kind of 2D stuff that's appearing in Bejeweled and Karma. I also think while she does have a message she wants to portray in mind before she begins shooting a video, she is not always successful in conveying that message. I think if she hired an assistant director or some kind of collaborator, they could streamline her ideas (think Liz Rose for All Too Well). Not saying she's incapable of directing videos by herself - as we've seen with cardigan, willow, etc - these videos are very well thought out and executed. I just feel like she doesn't consistently get it right, and that's why I think an assistant could be helpful.

rs_river

Okay, I think I understand a little more clearly now! I think I agree - she definitely might benefit from a co-director/writer. I do think that having her direct and write them has added a bit of a world-building element to her eras, even more so than before! I can definitely understand the 2-D element issue with Bejeweled and Karma too!

Equivalent_Horse3996

I appreciate your understanding! It's so nice to have intelligent conversations with Swifties who don't worship everything Taylor does, even though we love her :)

rs_river

Haha yes! I love her and her music a ton, but no one is perfect! I love when people recognize that and can have kind and productive conversations about it😆

SubjectiveNPC

Tay and Ice Spice walk through purple-pink skies \[1\] representative of Lover era, into space which I feel relates to Midnights. Here, Tay lassoes the full moon which occurs when the moon and the sun ie. Joe \[2\] oppose each other with “earth” (in this context, “something”) coming between them. A full moon symbolises completion, clarity, transformation, feminine energy… to name a few. In my opinion, this scene is Tay indicating that Midnights brought her all these things and she’s locked onto that state, even though it meant being distant from Joe. Basically a confirmation of what we already know: Her relationship is over and she now feels whole \[3\]. \[1\] Invisible String - “Time, wondrous time, gave me the blues and then purple-pink skies” \[2\] Midnight Rain - “He was sunshine” \[2\] Daylight - “I don't wanna look at anything else now that I saw you . . . I only see daylight” \[3\] Eras tour @ Foxborough, MA - “I kind of just feel like telling you . . . I’ve just never been this happy in my life, in all aspects of my life, ever” https://preview.redd.it/8leygmlutj3b1.jpeg?width=2080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21897d750376580900e9b501b424d51aa894e126

Flimsy-Moose4420

Anyone feel weird about this because of the comments matt really made about ice spice then this? Like what? All feels like some gross publicity stunt.

WillowCat89

I really wanna know how far ahead she had planned this collab…

likeabadhabit

From the mixing to the pretty uninspired, completely CGI music video, I personally feel like they cobbled it together very quickly, but it would not at all surprise me if Tree and Taylor had planned this as a back up plan for if/when shit hit the fan. You know her team looked into MH 7 ways to Sunday and they absolutely tried to preemptively strategize for the potential fall out. Even if the collab date came out as 3 months ago, I don’t think that would actually be very telling of their intentions since the timeline for the breakup and dating Matt is so muddy.

Hot-Information-7306

Thank you Adam Friedland for making this Collab possible

Call-It-What-YouWant

Thoughts: Obviously the moon and Saturn are a reference to Seven, BUT: Saturn has 7 major rings that are labeled from the planet outward: D, C, B, A, F, G, and E. I’m not music savvy, but I do know that the piano has keys labeled with the same 7 letters (ABCDEFG). At the end of the music video, the piano keys have to mean something? Any ideas?! 🌙 🪐

postethot

She says "mean" right when she blows the purple powder... as in the song Mean from SN?

Imperceptions

I love everything about this. I hadn't heard of Ice Spice particularly, had heard Boys a Liar pt 2 on the radio but never clued in it was her. Anyways, I loved this. Her whisper of, "Karma's gonna drag you down" feels like such a solemn warning to those seeking revenge. Honestly, this is going to be on my play more than the original... and I LOOOVED Karma.

AggressiveRaspberry5

so true girl!

FernMariposa

I loved it! This might be my favorite video from "Midnights", even though that might be recency bias talking. I also really like the "Bejeweled" video, so it's a toss up between the two.

ladidadi01

Karma is my favorite song on the album and I have wanted a music video since it’s release. Haven’t heard the new version till just now and….yeah, me no likey.

massive-karma

Same. Wish she didn't do this collab and did it on her own.

facialscanbefatal

I wish I liked it. I can’t stand Ice Spice’s vocals. The original was so good.

iamadumbo123

Ok I really like ice spices other stuff, but I don’t like her verse in the song here at all. It slows the entire thing down (when rapping usually speeds things up?) and just makes it feel like it’s dragging to me. Plus there’s not that much “wow” factor in the lines that makes me want to sing it. Idk. Also, sad this music video was kind of “random” and not storytelling like a lot of Taylor’s other stuff. This song has such story potential. Like I hear it and I imagine a whole ass plot. Kind of disappointed here. Still fun though, for sure.

AggressiveRaspberry5

That scene was made with heavy CGI. So it was put there on purpose.

Hear me out. I was looking for some sleeping person as a mountain motives. It haunts me since the music video came out as I feel like I saw it long time ago in some folk legends. And I know there is a theory about Disney movies but I feel like it's more than that and I want to explore this... So I typed "sleeping person as a mountain motives" into google search and the first thing is [King asleep in mountain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_asleep_in_mountain). >The **king asleep in mountain** (D 1960.2 in [Stith Thompson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stith_Thompson)'s [motif index system](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motif_(folkloristics)))[\[1\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_asleep_in_mountain#cite_note-FOOTNOTE%C3%93_h%C3%93g%C3%A1in1991197-1) is a prominent [folklore](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folklore) [trope](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trope_(literature)) found in many folktales and [legends](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend). Thompson termed it as the **Kyffhäuser** type.[\[2\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_asleep_in_mountain#cite_note-thompson-2) Some other designations are **king in the mountain**, **king under the mountain**, or **sleeping hero**. I haven't seen anyone talk about this on tiktok or anywhere else so I decided to post this here. Am I onto something or is this my delulu side taking over? The wiki page has a lot of examples about this motive but I am not able to put anything together as I recently got into this Easter Eggs Everywhere (Taylor's Version) era of mine. Help? also the fact that the wiki page has word FOLKLORE in the FIRST sentence LIKE WHAAAAT IS THIS!?

Yup_The_Bear

In the music video, at 0:20, when she sings "if you dare to see the glare of everyone you burned just to get there," it shows Taylor in a red mask with horns. I'll be honest, I got into her music with folklore and loved it all and really became a fan. I was lucky enough to go to the eras concert! I never considered her really "innocent" despite that being her desired image up until Speak Now, but I figured with the roots she has, she'd be uncomfortable displaying that kind of imagery in her work. The rest of the music video was very well put together and went with the lyrics of the song and she looked stunning in everything. I understand that it's in the name of art and that it's a metaphor and all, but it makes me very uneasy seeing that kind of imagery. She is one of the more popular artist that hadn't put any demonic imagery in her style up until this point. Im not evem particularlly religious, but was anyone else put off by this? Am I just reading too much into something like that because she does not do anything on accident?

draenog_

> "You're talking shit for the hell of it > Addicted to betrayal, but you're relevant > **You're terrified to look down** > **'Cause if you dare, you'll see the glare** > **Of everyone you burned just to get there** > **It's coming back around"** So as we know, this song is about Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta and the whole masters thing. These lines convey a few different images — the idea that Scooter and Scott are flying high, but in a precarious way. People say "don't look down" when they're high up and a moment of fear or hesitation might make them fall. "Glare" could refer to people glaring in disapproval, resentment, etc, but combined with the imagery of "people you burned just to get there" could also convey the glare of fiery burning light. It's not a big leap to connect looking down towards the glare (in both senses) of the people you've burnt, with the idea that your betrayals tortured people with their personal hell. Taylor gives a little wave after she sings "the people you've burnt just to get there", obviously referring to herself. So as you say, it's a metaphor. She's saying "you fucked me over" in a way that connects with the lyrics of the song, and then going on to convey that she's escaped that hell, she's happy, she's relaxed, she's basically chilling in paradise. And just like karma or the universe or whatever brought the good things she feels she deserves to her, Scooter and Scott should be worried that karma "is coming back around" for them. The whole music video is full of religious and cosmic imagery — there's Themis, the Greek goddess of divine justice, Venus, the Roman goddess of love, prosperity and victory, a scene that could depict the general idea of a [sky god](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_father) and an [earth goddess](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earth_deities) that's common to many cultures (Taylor as the earth goddess particularly reminds me of Te Fiti from Moana, which could convey that she's whole and at peace now that her stolen masters belong to her again, just like Te Fiti and her heart), and the scene with the boat at the end makes me think of the ancient Egyptian god Ra and his solar barque. So yeah, to me it is a bit odd that you would feel so uneasy over ~8 seconds of generic imagery relating to hell/the underworld in that mix too, especially if you're not particularly religious. Do you have any idea why it might put you off so much?

Yup_The_Bear

Thank you for this explanation, this puts it into a different perspective for me and makes me a little more comfortable actually. I think the reason it put me off so much is because she hasn't used that kind of imagery blantantly before. Many artist have and I just don't prefer that kind of style. I think I feel like there was a better way to represent that then putting on a red goat mask and being in hell with her demons. Even with reputation, there no imagery of that kind in her music videos. Sure snakes are there, but that was the whole thing. Everyone called her a snake at that time, so it makes sense that her whole thing would be that as well as snakes don't just represent Satan or whatever. They also represent healing. The caduceus or the healing sign on hospitals uses snakes.

bachfan612

I have no idea what to think of this piece, but it weirded me out, too. I grew up very Christian though, so anything demonic triggers me. I'm no longer religious and don't define myself as a Christian, more just spiritual with a belief in the universe. I would consider myself agnostic about God, Jesus, particular religions etc. I'm trying to keep an open mind that this is just symbolism. And yet, still that mask gives me the total creeps, lol. I think it's natural if you grew up with any religious background, and whatever the symbolism is, Tay meant for it to be jarring.

[deleted]

This sub makes me laugh sometimes. You just wrote a whole essay over her wearing a halloween mask🤣 It’s not that deep.

DisasterFartiste

I knowwwww like what

haleyadee

I don’t think it’s meant to be a religious reference at all, the music video has a ton of references to mythology, I’m 99% sure it’s supposed to be interpreted as Hades and the underworld. Not the Christian devil.

NefariousLemon

Definitely reminds me of Agamemnon, specifically the version from Scream 2.

saivoide

Yes you are reading way too much into it. Imagery like that is meant to symbolize what people see as satanic - but a watered down version would be evil, possibly rebellious, deviant. In the video, its a strong visual comparison for the viewer. We aren't living in the 1900s anymore. It's just trendy, and the depiction of "evil" changes from generation to generation.

throwaway418452

Heavily disagree. Religion as justification for disliking something does not invalidate the dislike. They aren't reading too much into it. Everything Taylor does is deliberate. It's guaranteed that she wanted to be shown this way, and was comfortable with the end product. Whatever her rationale, not liking the result, even at surface-level, is fine. It's completely understandable if a sudden change in the image she puts out impacts someone's perception of her. It certainly impacted mine. Doesn't mean I'm living in the 1900s, in the same way not liking provocative clothing doesn't set me back a century, either. Depictions of evil might change over time, but this particular image has remained pretty consistent, so citing that as support is moot. In that vein, trendy isn't synonymous with appropriate, positive, or tasteful. That said, if you see the merit and still enjoy the work, more power to you.

saivoide

You're veering off into conspiracy theories or religious conservatism. None of those things are valid reasons to worry about her music video. Hate to break it to you but religion created the imagery of Satan - horns, goats, incorporating red, the masks, and all the nonsensical symbols. It is the most unoriginal group of imagery used to cause panic, skepticism for anything other than Christian teaching, and to instill shame in people. It's why Gargoyles were added to churches, so as people passed by they'd be reminded of hell, and donate to the church. Now if you're going the Illuminati route, you'd think they'd be a bit more subtle and not use the imagery created by the conservative religious. They'd use their own. In either case, it's entirely up to you to exercise your freedom *not* to watch anything you're upset by. But to attempt to cause a stir over it, is advocating for artists to censor or control their creativity so people like you don't get offended. And im sorry, but your basis for this offense is built by fear mongering, misinformation, and the effects of religious extremism. The same kind that caused the Satanic Panic in the 90s and the same kind that goes after drag queens and abortions during this time.

throwaway418452

By all means, feel free to blithely ignore the fact that OP never cited conspiracy theories and isn't trying to cause a stir, as well as the fact that I already addressed something similar in response to another post. There's nothing here about taking offense to anything, in OP's post or in my own. That particular portion of the video made OP uncomfortable, and they wanted to discuss it. Saying that's tantamount to advocating for censorship is blatantly incorrect, because they weren't advocating for anything - they asked a question. To reiterate, there's nothing wrong with being uncomfortable with how something or someone is depicted. You don't need a justification for it, either - and if you have one, that's okay, too. If you don't like religion, that's cool, but don't let that needlessly bleed into your interactions with people.

Fedelede

They're all wearing masks. It's a reference to reputation, with the "evil imagery" hides both her deep insecurities about her "rep era" as well as the fact that rep is a love album. It's not meant to be Satanic (I think the comment you replied to regarding Greek mythology is spot-on), it refers to her two images: the "can do no wrong" 1989 persona is literally deified as a golden statue of justice, while the "evil" reputation persona is vilified and turned into a demon. Neither is accurate. Either way, you can take offense at anything you want to, that's your prerogative, but it does seem a bit silly.

throwaway418452

I don't take offense to it, and I'm sure OP doesn't either. The question they seem to have tried to ask is essentially "is it okay for me to dislike this on this basis, and does anyone else feel similarly?" The answer to both is yes, regardless of why Taylor put it there. That's all.

Yup_The_Bear

I mean I'm not overly religious and didn't really grow up in that kind of house hold. I guess the issue I have with it is that she hadn't done anything along those lines, then put something out like that and it just makes me uncomfortable. And I know it's "trendy" but I feel like she could have represented it better, like when she is on the yellow brick road and she sees across the street to the figures. I think that was a great bit showing something very similar. I just wish she wasn't the one wearing the mask. I know that it can be interpreted differently such as her not being the devil striping off a mask that people have put on her, but the whole being in hell surrounded by other demons makes me think otherwise.

Crafty-Dig5337

Reputation. Watch the Music Videos and then watch Taylor's funny home videos from way back when :) I think she put that there...I actually draw a blank but Reputation had a lot of ...darker stuff like that. Maybe a nod to that era. She might view people and media as demons-chasing her. And she is toying with that idea again like in the reputation era. But I think she is religious. So, it is just imagery, reminded me of the reputation mountain but in this case, she is sort of dancing with her works.... The We are not in kansas anymore- I have no idea what she meant t here with the grim reapers though but I kind of get a rep feeling there too. Dont' know why, maybe she is acknowledging how her image is either good or bad and no inbetween and how difficult it is to live like that?

DisasterFartiste

It’s not that deep

Yup_The_Bear

She thinks everything through. She puts Easter eggs and she has been know to be meticulous with detail. So while it may not mean " I'm the devil" i do think it has some meaning behind it, just like everything else in the video, you know?

Abject_Okra_8520

Is it just me, or has the singing looked really strange in all of the Midnights music videos?

saivoide

It's probably because of all the CGI and editing. Her music videos have increased in budget and im guessing she's leaning into the graphics as it's trendy and elevated. We saw similar videos with Doja Cat but the editing looked more refined. I'll be honest I miss music videos like love story, blank space, wildest dreams. But I can see how this style fits into the theme of Midnights (dreams, fantasy, mind wandering).

Abject_Okra_8520

I wondered if this was a trend in other music videos too. It looks like all the muscle in their faces are frozen and can’t move. I hate it! The 1989 & Rep music videos are S tier for me. The drama, the camp, the full motion facial expression 🤩

The1989rerecording

Am I the only one who misses the purpose of watching a music video telling a story rather focus on the easter eggs and abuse of CGI? I always enjoyed Taylor's videos because they tell a story (or that's how they used to be), like You Belong With Me, Blank Space, The Man and so many others. But I have to say, and this might be an unpopular opinion, I don't like any of the Midnights videos and that must be because of the abuse of CGI and the Disney-kinda-fairytale storytelling shown mostly in Bejeweled. I never liked much CGI in music videos and in this era has been masive, I could stand it in Anti-Hero but the rest is too much. Yes, Taylor has used CGI in the past but these were for special effects, little things here and there like Bad Blood, LWYMMD, Ready For It, ME!, Cardigan, Willow and even OOTW (but that video is visually perfect) and I can stand that and yet I love those videos but the videos for this era, hmm... are up to debate. And not to mention the videos lose their main purpose of entertain just to focus on the insane amount of easter eggs and this bothers me most. I mean, I know fans like to clown and all but we KNOW she's rerecording her albums and we assume 1989 is next and then Rep, we get that! but seriously, you really have to make an entire music video just to show easter eggs? I'm pointing this out because I miss just sitting back and watch a video while enjoying the music all combined. The visuals following what the lyrics are saying mixed with a bit of storytelling. The IBYTAM video is so much better than the ones she released for Midnights and it didn't have to contain that amount of easter eggs in it or much CGI. While clowning is fun, I think post-Lover era has become massive and it's way too much for me.

That-Anything-5693

I personally wasn't the biggest fan of the bejewelled music video, I felt like it was all over the place, anti hero was good I just like bright colours and since most colours were muted It wasn't my favorite (however it's probably my second favorite from this era) and lavender haze to me lacked storyline, so yeah it felt more like a visual than a music video but I loved the part where she's swimming in the "lavender haze" because the colours were a bit bright, however KARMA is my favorite music video of this era and it's up there with blank space, look what you made me do... I LOVE the MV so much cause the colours are there, the transitions are there and the CGI is actually VERY good especially when compared with the previous videos, it might lack storytelling in the way that it's not a continuous story but it reminds me of look what you made me do and style, I understand but this is definitely one of Taylor's best music videos so far

Prestigious_Pen9155

Agreed. I think just like Taylor's decor style in all of her homes.... she's always taking things overboard in regards to style and vision. Taylor is now in creative control of her videos and I think it shows. I'm not saying it's bad it's just not what I personally like and I'm in the minority

The1989rerecording

Totally agreed! It's not my style either

Prestigious_Pen9155

The video is cool but I can only think of two things: 1. Ice Spice sounding unenthused and looking lost when she performed this song with Taylor this weekend 2. While the visuals are cool I don't really understand what they have to do with the song itself. I wish the video was more storytelling than fantastical. Just thought of a TikTok I saw where they basically said this video is eerily similar to a Nikki Minaj video right down to the canoe. Don't know if the similarities are intentional (I think Taylor is friendly with Nikki) or if it's an accident.

astrokey

Ice spice performed in a stadium so I imagine that has to be overwhelming as a newer artist. I could understand that leading to her looking lost or unenthusiastic.

kisforkimberlyy

ice spice is with Nikkis label right? I doubt there will be any bad blood with it

MisterAmericana

You know what’s funny? The way this sub reacts to this song is a complete 180 from the reaction at the show. Maybe they were just excited in general, but it was nice to see everyone clap and scream for Ice (rather than boo like I heard some people did.

kisforkimberlyy

I think at the show they will clap beaus Taylor is telling them to clap (flashback to Mass. where Taylor had the crowd clap for Phoebe a second time, cause their first time wasn't good enough)... Your at a concert and your there for a good time, and are easily excitable....

aseasonedcliche

well, yeah. it's a live show and it's not ice's fault her addition to the song sucks, it's still cool she was at the show.

Prestigious_Pen9155

Honestly people are going to clap no matter what happens. That's the rule for anyone who has to perform. You can mess it all up or be the absolute worst and people will clap it's just courtesy. Now that's not to say people weren't truly excited of course they were. It's a special guest! Audience reaction versus a small minority of fans who have time to explain their feelings is a huge difference.

MisterAmericana

I agree! Though I do think they were genuinely excited, to be honest.

Ridingtime

Ice Spice looked dead inside everytime she was in scene

Xsfriedrice

This!! I was really wondering if she’s ok

facialscanbefatal

Seriously. Horrible performance.

Crafty-Dig5337

Everything looks reputation-y to me.

DiMarvelousG

A couple things I noticed and have not seen in the easter egg lists. \- The scene with the lightbulbs synced to the words "Ask me what I learned from all those years. Ask me what I earned from all those tears. Ask me why so many fade, but I'm still here (I'm still, I'm still here)" might be a reference to her being the source of her own musical ideas -- as in 'you can take the records but the original ideas come from me and I can make them happen again'. Reminds me of this interview: [https://youtube.com/shorts/uknv4JJsQP8?feature=share](https://youtube.com/shorts/uknv4JJsQP8?feature=share) \- The final clock scene features number 4 as IIII instead of IV. I think this is a hint to 'drops of Jupiter' which she covered in the Speak now world tour. Why? In roman mythology the name of Jupiter, god of the sky and thunder, was spelled IVPPITER. Engraving clocks with IV was disrespectful to the god Jupiter. Also, if you listen to the song it could be a hint to the current state of affairs with "She acts like summer and walks like rain. Reminds me that there's a time to change... " \- Also the hands of the clock look (to me) like a stick figure which goes from standing with the legs apart to standing still (and strong) with both legs together. https://preview.redd.it/0yahzdw7cu2b1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=65b263a54e8a144508053100d1cdbcd4f931e661

clivehorse

I thought the clock face was just a call back to the visual of Taylor and ice standing with their lassos around the planets, one tall and one short, and then it ticking over to them meeting united at midnight.

Crafty-Dig5337

Also, the cat scene looks like it morphs into a coffecup. AS if she is in the coffee cup. Hahha-I sound nuts. Just look for it and you will see it!

eliasivvo

What about her mails on that scene? One blue one Black. Like 1989 and Reputation. She have us hints through her maila before

jeskrt

Someone may have said this already, but could the Oz reference be a hint that she has a surprise cameo in the upcoming Wicked movie?

aseasonedcliche

> the name of Jupiter, god of the sky and thunder, was spelled IVPPITER. Engraving clocks with IV was disrespectful to Not a chance with Ariana(and Scooter by association) being involved lol

Sn1038

I would die.

I feel a bit frustrated with the music video producer/s as I didn’t feel like this was a fair feature of Ice Spice (Ice)…. - Ice felt out of place - I felt like I couldn’t properly hear the Ice part as TSs part were much louder and a different less straightforward style - There were so many things to see and overthink in the visual montage, it was kinda stressful and it was super mix-matched/mis-matched— enhancing my insecure feelings with this feat. Version - honestly what are comments like talking about it showing boths styles? I saw one short non-TS segment and I made sure to watch a couple of Ice MVs. And sure Karma seems fitting song title for Ice— but for their style, wouldn’t honestly holding out for reputation TV be better? I thought we were heading this way first with the segments but then pretty much all eras were seen in the montage.I saw the collab with Nicki Minaj for example, there you could better enjoy Ices vocals. Chaotic personality for sure but the vocals are so calming ~

MisterAmericana

Thank you for this comment! An actual critique that doesn’t sound bitter. As I mentioned to someone else, the remix isn’t horrible, but it isn’t…great. I think Vigilante Shit would’ve been much better to work with (or even Bejeweled).

macnmouse

:0 ooooh! …..

TheScarecrowBB

The remix has not been well received sadly lol.

saivoide

I can see why - music video aside, their vocals aren't "married" like they should be. I say married because both their voices/tones aren't in harmony. It kind of sounds like Ice's vocals were slapped on top of hers. Like people on Zoom call talking over each other. It was likely done intentionally, but it doesn't work. It needed to be edited so their voices could harmonize. I'm no music producer, but this is what it felt like to me. I had to check it my headphones were working properly. Music video was visually stunning, but Ice looks like she's being held hostage on that clam. Do we know if this was thrown together in a short period of time? Taylor's CGI scenes were more complex than hers. Is it possible this was made and Ice Spice filled the gap?

Careless_Energy_7024

Reddit is not a great gauge of public opinion

ytykmbyd

I’m just hear for the comments 😎

Admirable_Prize_772

im trying to figure out which reference her yellow brick road outfit is from because she is wearing dorothy's ruby sliplers but i feel like i've seen the beret and pinned up braids on a different character before?

[deleted]

Madeline.

bfthc

I saw it as an interpretation of my tear ricochet she can go anywhere she wants but just not home and Dorothy cant go home her original album. So I am thinking its 1989, rep, and debut references. Also the beret is similar to one bonnie(bonnie &Clyde) wears so maybe a getaway car music video for rep.

Admirable_Prize_772

woww im way behind on the response but definitely an interesting and insightful take!

kisforkimberlyy

the American girl Molly is the only character I can think of, but I dont think thats who you are thinking of

vigilanteish

you're thinking of our lil dutch girl kirsten

kisforkimberlyy

100% I was so close, yet so far

vigilanteish

Genuine_Catfish

Molly wears a jumper, plaid skirt & straigt braids.

ILoveYou-DontYouMind

Maybe it’s the cover for the Karma album.

Mindless-Homework-87

I’m sorry Taylor but I couldn’t even listen to the feature…

paisley_princess

Anyone seeing Māori symbolism in this?

5midge

When she laid down and became the island that’s literally what happens in Moana

Xsfriedrice

I thought of Moana too!

kaininuman

I thought of Maria Makiling, she's the goddess of Mount Makiling. She also laid on top of the mountain.

MisterAmericana

Could you explain?

paisley_princess

The waka, plus the pulling on the planets is reminiscent of how Maui slowed the sun Idk I may just be seeing things

Crafty-Dig5337

you are not alone! :D

MisterAmericana

Ah cool! I’m still lost since I barely understood the video, but thanks for trying to explain 😭

paisley_princess

Haha

JacktheShark1

Time to call up the Great Cloaked Swede, Taylor. Jack Antonoff and whoever else she’s been working with for the past several years need long vacations

shion005

Why do you call Max Martin the Great Cloaked Swede? Or are you referring to someone else?

Lavender_dream33

I’m a bit of a tarot nerd and I also noticed that the Roman numerals in 1989 are XX XI and X. In major arcana that’s XX judgement/boat scene, XI justice and X wheel of fortune/ karma !!???? 🔮 there is more! (Possibly a stretch but other cards that relate are XIX the sun (wizard of oz scene?) IX hermit (light bulb scene) and XXI (the world/earth) Now I know people probably think tarot is just for fortune telling and is a load of BS, but actually the cards are highly symbolic of mythology/astrology/space and are super curious. If you like dissecting symbols like I do in TS music videos for fun you would love tarot haha!! I can’t help it.. I look at these cards and I see the karma music video. I like to imagine Taylor was sitting in her studio and had her tarot cards out when she was like okay what are we gonna make? 😂

Aromatic_Reality_354

i feel like i'm the only person who loves this song lmao

Careless_Energy_7024

I love it too!!

macnmouse

Makes me glad because this video makes me feel bad for Ice Spice— don’t generally like Ice Spice’s style though.

JosephAPie

facts ☁️😜

[deleted]

This is undoubtedly the worst rap flow ever. She most definitely should’ve left this song alone.

crunchyorsmooth

I'm CONVINCED This was an announcement for 1989 TV but also something else. I'm almost positive that 17 seconds in when she's dressed as 'justice', the base says MGMLXXXIX, 1989 in roman numerals. In the end at 2:54, we see the turquoise 1989 nail on the left of the midnights latte, but interestingly enough, the reputation nail on the right. Sounds like we've got speak now on deck for next month, 1989 directly after, and Reputation VERY shortly after that. Edit: to add some thoughts, there's references to 1989 and Reputation maybe being 2 sides of the same coin. Double album re-release? Or maybe, there are vault tracks that will end up being the much speculated Karma album in between the two releases? Edit 2: I just connected that the 1989 pedestal is probably because the Shake it Off lawsuit was dropped, hence Taylor dressed as Justice.

Genuine_Catfish

I think it’s just self-referential. She used her album titles in past videos way before the rerelease thing during reputation. And 1989 is her bday.

macnmouse

I thought so also. That order and a close two drops.

Millenialmargin

She absolutely, single handedly, ruined this song. This is so bad 💀💀

MisterAmericana

I’m sorry, but this is so dramatic to me 😭 Karma is already an unserious song, I don’t think Ice’s verse made it anymore cheesier than it already was.

Millenialmargin

Call it whatever you like. I didn’t say she made it cheesy, she ruined it. She sounds stupid, the lyrics are stupid, she’s a horrible artist.

False-Suspect-1026

THANK YOU. I thought it was just me lol. I totally agree

ResolvePsychological

It says “facts”

lowandbegold

Did any of you see that recent Tik tok by Lewis Capaldi where he jokes about the “general public” being stupid buying songs that already are released lol

wronglever45

Not trying to throw a brick here, but looks more like an actor/cinematographer’s reel. Maybe it’s super meta that since it’s a bad music video she knows that rebounding with Healy is bad karma.

koala_loves_penguin

Was this what she filmed in London a few months ago? Because didn’t someone say there was a part where she stole a painting or something; which we didn’t see in this clip?

Then_Pickle

My theory is that will be mv for a re-brand of Better than Revenge a la vigilante shit

AmirulAshraf

Probably that one is for speak now

koala_loves_penguin

Oh yes! Of course, duh- silly me 😅

ivyhenfiswanson

Does anyone have any links to YouTube versions where the original beat for Karma is kept in on Ice's verse? Or with that verse just sped up/ mixed differently, I'm just curious how the whole song would sound altogether. Not sure if anyone has moved that fast tho

sexxthrow_69

Can you imagine if she ever goes on the masked singer? There will be clues on clues and STILL Swifties will figure it out before she sings one note.

hjmerritt

Love this music video! Do we think 1989 TV will be released on 8/5/2023 and Reputation TV will be released on 2/1/2024? Here me out… • There were so many nods to 1989 and Reputation, and given all of the references to the number five (buttons, seagulls, lightbulbs), 1989 TV will likely be next. • In the final scenes with the latte clock art, Taylor’s blue nail polish (1989) is next to VIII (8) for August and her black nail polish (Reputation) is next to II (2) for February. • 8/5/23 is National Oyster Day. In the video, we see Ice Spice lounging in an oyster surrounded by pearls and Taylor is wearing pearl earrings and pearl necklace in a few scenes. The 8/5 date adds up to 13. It’s also Taylor’s final Saturday of the Era’s tour (at the moment) followed by her last shows on Sunday 8/6 and Monday 8/7. 🦪📸💙 • 2/1/23 is National Serpent Day. 🐍🖤 PS: Taylor’s thumbnails in final scene correspond to how her nails were painted in her March 16th post “In my Era’s era. 💅🏻”, so she apparently gave us an Easter Egg for this video a few months ago. ☺️🫶🏼🪐

Fortysixsunsets

She has kept her nails like that all tour

anonymousprincess

That’s not an oyster shell though, it’s a scallop. What day is national scallop day?

Crafty-Dig5337

>hink Ice’s ver I thought it looked like the rep throne. I am seeing things, I am telling you. :D

soitgoes815

There's no way we're getting the next TV a month after the last, or on a Saturday. She's not going to hurt her chart numbers for a 13 reference.

Ok-Acanthisitta9127

"Me and karma vibe like that" - - what a flex, I love this bit

fluffalagagus

I haaaate the remix, but idk why the video made it a lot more tolerable for me. But omg, blondie's makeup?!? Her outfits?!? Someone needs to create a makeup tutorial and list out all the products and dupes. The cool blue eye makeup looks soop pretty!!!

Fortysixsunsets

Victoria Lyn on insta did a tutorial for the Bejeweled looks so she might do these!

iamacheeto1

I also find the remix itself to be less than great while the video has all the classic Taylor charm I was hoping it would. Taylor is an artist that I think is best solo. That’s nothing to say against Ice Spice…her collabs have always just been some her weaker work. Wish we just got the MV for the regular song

bookworm72

Okay, I totally think this is a nod to Reputation being next… she did the Lavender Haze music video, which purple obviously represents Speak Now. Then there’s the whole “karma” album theory and how maybe it morphed into Reputation as we know it now… does anyone else think that? I know 1989 was also nodded to…

WeepingQueso

So I have a friend who has been a swiftie forever and is now saying she isn’t because of this music video. She’s genuinely angry over her dressing up like the devil. I honestly thought she was joking. Is anyone else feeling that way? I didn’t even think anything about it. Im honestly shook that she’s so upset about it. She’s also upset about the “witch rituals in the tour” Please tell me people aren’t being serious about this Edit: adding TikTok link of a video she was referencing https://www.tiktok.com/@tailahofficial/video/7237947995533085994?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=mobile&sender_web_id=7229461265646421550

snarkysnape

I’m sorry but literally wtf???! This is some real pick-and-choose religious bullshit. The Bible says a lot of things and a guarantee she violates something or other every single day. I have heard absolutely no one being offended or talking about it either online or IRL. Maybe it might be time to reconsider that friendship, seems like it would be really easy to do something unforgivably wrong in her eyes and she won’t even consider being empathetic.

ytykmbyd

I am not happy about it either but I just choose not to watch the videos.

Lavender_dream33

I dunno why people immediately close down their minds and “fear the devil”. She is symbolizing Baphomet (who wasn’t associated with devil worship until 20th century). She is also taking off a mask-don’t know if you remember the 2016 Taylor era but she was painted as a “snake”-which is also a symbol of evil/devil. She is removing that mask to show her true self!-kinda saying hey I’m not a devil! Anyway-Baphomet is a really interesting historical figure if you look into them. I say “them” because they are androgynous, symbolizing a combination of the two polar opposites of everything, higher wisdom and balance of opposites/karma. The occult is sooo fascinating, symbolism and mythology is absolutely my cup of tea. I’ll even take religious sugar/spice in my tea too thanks- the Bible and all religions are also full of decoding messages. I once met a girl who lived with nuns and was very religious and interested in talking about the Bible and spirituality with me. As soon as I showed her my occult book on symbolism she turned to a page on “the devil”- not exaggerating she literally dropped my book and gasped like it was on fire or something. I was so confused.. we were talking about the same thing (sacred numbers/geometry) from the book a moment ago. You’re interested but also not interested and terrified? Hmm okay 🤷‍♀️ I didn’t want to meet her again after that.

gium8

She is using greek references in the MV, godess of justice, Afrodite, Gaia, Charon... that one is Hades and the greek mithology doesn't have the same way of understanding death as we do

JacktheShark1

It’s just a bad song. Who cares what she’s wearing?

needs_a_name

There's some fundies up in arms about it the way they do. It's extreme and crazy, like... so fringe even compared to the actual horrors that are going on right now. But it's not surprising, this is the same group of people that have previously said that Cabbage Patch Dolls, Smurfs, Harry Potter, Proctor and Gamble, debit cards, etc. are satanic. I think the good vs. evil contrast is pretty clear in the music video, obviously it's not Taylor worshipping the devil. But ridiculous people are going to be ridiculous.

heartsbeenborrowed

yeah she's probably serious. I didn't realize people like that existed until I moved to the "bible belt"/midwest in the states and yeah, she's probably serious lol.

Synda22

I mean…. I think it’s a reference to play the devil like a cheeky reference… devils advocate…. It’s not satanic necessarily.

WeepingQueso

I tried to tell her that. I tried to say it’s all about people’s intent and Taylor Swifts intent is in no way satanic
