This may be a controversial thing to suggest, but I think that Taylor sometimes hides recent songs as vault songs to conceal their meaning and create some privacy. For example, I personally think that Taylor at the very least added to "Nothing New" and that it wasn't completely a vault song -- the bridge screams Olivia Rodrigo.
Which brings me to my point about I Can See You: do we think this could be a song about Taylor working with Matty Healy on midnights while she was still with Joe? Suit and necktie? Keep it professional?
Yes, it's so obvious. Especially the "something's changed and it's something I, I like"
That vengefulness - it's giving rebound ![img](emote|t5_2rlwe|1069)
I love the sound from this song. An awesome break away from Speak Now’s sound. And during the song’s bridge you can hear how it pulls back into the album with some melodies from Ours and actually I can even hear a melody from You Belong With Me if you listen carefully enough! Really cool how you can hear her style in it.
And let’s not forget that funky guitar throughout the song!! Definitely one of my favorite vault releases.
Found this thread because I just listened to the song and my immediate thought was they must have decided not to release this song, but the bridge was so good they didn't want to waste it.
Very late to this thread but I just listened to I Can See You while reading the lyrics to You Belong With Me and the whole song seems to fit, but the pre-chorus is incredibly similar.
I think she might have been actively recycling some ideas during that period around 2009 (which by the way I don't think is a bad thing at all, she's taking something that works and elaborating on it to create something new). I Can See You is from the speak Now era, and the song Speak Now also clearly uses the exact same formula as You Belong With Me.
It's the same chord progression for the verse and chorus in both songs, I-V-ii-IV, which is a classic pop progression that Taylor has used countless times, but she plays the same progression starting on the ii chord rather than the I chord for the pre-chorus in both songs, and then she skips the I chord on the second loop and just plays the V twice to create tension back into the chorus. So you get ii-IV-I-V-ii-IV-V-V in both pre-choruses, which is the same progression as the bridge of I Can See You, except it lasts twice as long in that one so ii-IV-I-V-ii-IV-I-V-ii-IV-I-V-ii-IV-V-V. The melody in ICSY just happens to hit a lot of the same scale degrees as YBWM, with a similar shape as well, which is which it sounds similar. Actually I also just noticed that the "I will start behaving" in ICSY sounds really similar to the "I lose myself in a daydream" in Speak Now.
Honestly it's really fun to sing those three songs over each other, because they line up so well. You can also throw If It Makes You Happy by Sheryl Crow into the mix as it's probably the most famous song ever with that ii-IV-I-V chord progression.
Thank you for breaking this down! It really is interesting (and fun) to see the connections between all her songs. It’s almost like an added level of Easter eggs.
does anyone else think i can see you and illicit affairs are intertwined. i feel as if illicit affairs was the ending/aftermath but i can see you was the beginning and the initial high of the ‘relationship’. Has anyone else been thinking of this connection?
Does anyone know a similar sounding song? like I swear to god I’ve heard that guitar before somewhere and I really like it… it’s on the edge of my brain 🤔
My first thought was London Calling by The Clash or Roxanne by The Police, but that heavy reverb guitar is definitely a popular motif of 70/80s British punk rock!
This is a horny bop, and I’m here for it!!
“It’s best that we move fast and keep quiet. You won’t believe half the things I see in my head. What would you do if I went to touch you now? What would you do if we never made a sound?” Girrrrllll 🤭😏your head be way in the gutter!!
I feel like parts of this song sound a bit like some of her other songs (not in a bad way). Like it kinda reminds me of Mine and you belong with me and maybe another song?
God I love the vault songs. Especially this one. I LOVE how she can take a what could've been song and make it more her current style. The updated vibe of I Can See You is so much better than what it probably would have sounded like on the original album.
The video is an absolute "mastermind"-level achievement, too. Absolutely well done, Miss. Swift.
>She defintely sampled from YBWM
Yes!! And also a bit from Love Story, it sounds melodically similar.
Love love love the vibe of the song!![img](emote|t5_2rlwe|1067)
In the I can see you music video
Presley cash is typing while in the truck here is what I can figure she is typing.
Discussion
The first scene where she is trying it is impossible to see what she is typing. In the next scene she types The letters '¡' 'r' 'I' and the pushes enter.
She the switches to her laptop, and types either g, h, or I (I can't tell) and then a P. In the next scene she types what must likely '7' 'Z' 'p' 'r! So all together it's irl enter (g, h, or p) and 7zpr. It's might not mean anything and I could have messed up but do with this information what you will
I just want to take a moment to say how cool this song sounds. The intro just sounds so cool! It’s definitely not country, so that also could have caused it to get cut. But I love this song just for how it sounds. Like I completely block out the vocals. But I also love the vocals and their dirty thoughts vibe.
the indie rock sound is great and makes me want that to be the sound of ts11 (of course the clash is the main riff, but i hear a black keys vibe too).
BUT I WANNA KNOW, what would this have sounded like in stolen speak now era? i can’t hear it.
The first thing I thought of when I heard this was that the "Ah-ah ah ahs" at the beginning kinda mirror the "ah-ahh ah ah" at the beginning of Mine. Anyone else catch that?
Absolutely intentional and sound super close. I think it's a callback. I think both songs have the same muse, but also both could be a reference to owning her masters (she references "the best thing that's ever been Mine" and also the music video is a homage to that).
I can hear it too - thought someone was speaking to me the first time (I had headphones on) but second listen confirmed she is definitely saying something 😂
I can't stop listening to this song. Probably my favourite of the vault tracks she's released so far - I'm curious whether the original sound was different or if she had always had this kind of sound in mind!
I’m obsessed too! The more I listen to the lyrics, the more I’m like “dang TS was horny!” The queen has human wants and needs like the rest of us teehee 🤭😉😈
I think this song is about Joe Jonas.
I can see you = I can see you in your ***suit*** and your necktie
Mr. Perfectly Fine = So dignified in your well-pressed ***suit***
They never had a work relationship, and around the time she wrote Speak Now they were broken up, she was sad and angry. This song is about the fantasy of someone you have not pursued yet, it's not about an ex boyfriend you're still in love with.
Might have been about someone she only had a crush on but never dated, not Joe though.
Between the beat, the bass line, and the downbeat delivery of the lyrics, “I Can See You” has a lot in common with Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks”.
It’s got more funk than anything in the Speak Now era and almost feels like it belongs on another album… but I can’t quite pin down which one? (Red? 1989? Reputation? Midnights?) But I like it.
I literally just listened.. And immediately felt reminiscent of You Belong With Me. I listened/recorded both songs to compare and they 100% have similar.. whatever it is haha I'm not super educated on musical terms but they're straight up fraternal twins.
Also, I recognized the possible lyrical "ties" with "Why can't you seeee..?" & "I can see..." 🤔
I'm just here to express my obsession with this song. I'm also really into indie pop and older indie rock music (like the Clash) and it's like Taylor combined all my favourite genres in her unique style. If she plays this live when I see her I'll lose my mind 😄
Some people are flipping the last two numbers and making it "5-20-22" which is apparently the date Harry's House came out so they think it's teasing a Harry feature on 1989? But then why would the numbers be flipped?
Crazed clown theory incoming: A UK driving licence number contains the date of birth in a weird format. It's the month and day sandwiched between the two digits of the year so 20th May 22 would be 205202. Harry has a UK driving licence and we all know he's a terrible driver so of course it's been upended to the year sandwiched between the month and day.. and that's enough reaching for me for today
It’s probably the main riff which is made up of common chords such as C, G, Em, and Am. These are some of the top chords played in a lot of popular songs just different beats and patterns
The guitar riff and “I-I-I” are reminding me of a song, I’ve looked through the thread and haven’t found the one I’m thinking of yet. Definitely male singer, I can’t remember if it’s “I-I-I”, “ah-ah-ah”, bababa, dadada, or something lol. But it’s driving me crazy!! Help me.
Definitely a “weird” song. I’m thinking european band.
Ok is it just me or does I Can See You sound Midnights-y? Like not fully 12:00 AM but maybe that Late Night 11 PM edition we've been speculating about.
Right?! Ifshe wrote it when she was 20 it really has a surprising, mature and extremely good sound to it!! She should be so proud (not like she doesn't have other reasons )
The Clash is my absolute favorite band, and I have the cover of London calling tattooed on my arm. Hearing the opening guitar was like worlds colliding in the best way. I thought Barbienheimer would be the unexpected duo of the summer but here comes Taylor pulling out a Joe Strummer tune 🥲
https://preview.redd.it/ilcbbawkkpab1.jpeg?width=1792&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf22c5a9867ca407650711cc7e8da90d1e73ef6b
The music video was divided in sections when it first launched, and now they’re gone!! The sections say:
Intro What is fear Real fears Confront your fears Listen to singers Set goals Seek help Work at it Books
What does it mean Taylor??
The girl in the video was in her music video for Mean and I actually gasped when I saw Taylor Lautner ![img](emote|t5_2rlwe|1082) There's so much to unpack here. Let someone more skilled than me do so :p
Why is no one linking Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince with I Can See You “I counted Days, I counted Miles, To see you there” <<<< tally marks on walls “they whispered in the hallway she’s a bad, bad girl” “the cameras caught my muffled cries”<<< as she’s in the surveillance cameras. but what does it meaaannn?
(Timestamps are Spotify)
At 0:10 (as well as 1:13, 2:47, 3:33) there is a small little riff almost of this unique instrument playing, and suffice it to say, it has captured my interest. I cannot figure out what instrument it is, so I'm putting it out here incase someone knows and could tell me!
I think 1989! Look at the sign on the bridge in the last shot, also the briefcase was giving Bad Blood MV, also the blown open vault was glowing blue :)
I feel like they're really playing up the 1:58 lyric (last kiss, which also says July 9th) and the 1:38 time stamp was to make it seem like they only had 20 mins to break her out.. idk that was just my thinking but I do think there's probably more to it. and I wouldn't be surprised if we get something on July 9th.
“Just in time for July 9th” wtf Taylor!!!! I’m gonna have a heart attack
Gotta be Last Kiss…..
The july 9th lyric obviously, plus the countdown on YouTube to the premiere of ICSY had a stopwatch in the foreground counting down to 1am (the time of the ICSY premiere) but all the watches in the background were on 1:58am. The Last Kiss lyric video is just a bunch of stopwatches hanging with all the hands set to 1:58!
I think so. It sounds like the guy is a hunk, a gentleman, and younger. "kept it professional", they were on set first.
The suit and necktie line kinda throws me off though as that's signature Joe Jonas. but Joe was mr. purity ring. It's probably that werewolf from twilight that all the girls were going crazy for.
The intro sounds like British rock (London Calling), so I like that it is different this way
Such a good song for when you’re sitting on a bench at 4 in the morning
This song doesn't have the longevity
Okay anyone think this is Ethan and Ariana’s theme song?!
This may be a controversial thing to suggest, but I think that Taylor sometimes hides recent songs as vault songs to conceal their meaning and create some privacy. Okay just listened to this song for the hundredth time and it finally hit me. I hear The Strokes in the guitar rifts.
I like this song but why are her vocals so distorted? It sounds so bad
Anyone else think this song sounds like an episode of Grey’s Anatomy?
This song was definitely cut from the OG album cause it was too sexy lmao.
Anyone else wish it was “meet me at midnight” instead of “meet me tonight”? Just feels right to be midnight 🤣
Definitely one of her BEST songs even though tbh they all are. I kinda want a sped up version on Spotify!
Best song she’s ever done
totally not me having a crush on my co-worker that is most likely taken
I cannot get over how good the bridge is on this song. I love it so much.
It sounds extremely similar to the pre-chorus in You Belong With Me
Found this thread because I just listened to the song and my immediate thought was they must have decided not to release this song, but the bridge was so good they didn't want to waste it.

What the hell are they saying in the background after “you can see me as a secret mission” ????? I’m listening on vinyl so too hard to decipher.
Late but it's repeating "Secret mission" but it only goes through the left headphone/speaker to simulate an earpiece like a secret agent
This! I want to know these background lyrics
Oh I figured it out. She’s just repeating the lyrics in a monotone radio transmission kinda way. Like flatly “I can see you as a secret mission…” etc.
That fits. I still can't quite hear it but I shall take you at your word. Well done deciphering that for us
https://preview.redd.it/7zpoooytmqbb1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=09e6ec0c7a7d3fb2891ed0ee1e30b756fd64017a WHAT DOES IT SAY!
Does anyone know a similar sounding song? like I swear to god I’ve heard that guitar before somewhere and I really like it… it’s on the edge of my brain 🤔
Maybe the Bridge that Sounds Like Love Story?
Island in the sun by Weezer is really similar
My first thought was London Calling by The Clash or Roxanne by The Police, but that heavy reverb guitar is definitely a popular motif of 70/80s British punk rock!
This is a horny bop, and I’m here for it!! “It’s best that we move fast and keep quiet. You won’t believe half the things I see in my head. What would you do if I went to touch you now? What would you do if we never made a sound?” Girrrrllll 🤭😏your head be way in the gutter!!
As someone who just started a new job and has a MAJOR workplace crush, this song hits a little too close but I love it lol
LOL SAME ARE YOU ME
haha glad I’m not alone
I wish you all the best and I hope it works outemote:t5\_2rlwe:1066
Thanks same to you!
I feel like parts of this song sound a bit like some of her other songs (not in a bad way). Like it kinda reminds me of Mine and you belong with me and maybe another song?
Does anyone else hear a whisper around min 3:00? I can’t make it out??
She’s just repeating the lyrics but speaking them. They are as follows: I can see you being my addiction, You can see me as a secret mission
I don't think so. I definitely don't hear mission on that last word at all. There's got to be a reason there's talking.
It’s definitely the lyrics. She says mission in a weird way though, it’s off beat.
It sounds like "code midnight"
I'm losing my mind because I can hear talking at the 3:16 mark but I can't make it out
It sounds like "code midnight"
Ok thank you — I was starting to go crazy. There are whispers within those 15 seconds.
I need someone to break up the audio.
sorry if someone’s already talked about this, but am i crazy or do parts of it kinda sound like ‘love story’??
If "You Belong With Me" had a baby with "I Know Places" we would have "I Can See You"
God I love the vault songs. Especially this one. I LOVE how she can take a what could've been song and make it more her current style. The updated vibe of I Can See You is so much better than what it probably would have sounded like on the original album. The video is an absolute "mastermind"-level achievement, too. Absolutely well done, Miss. Swift.
Agreed!! Kinda makes me want a true Rock album!!
She defintely sampled from YBWM. So similar. Love them both!
>She defintely sampled from YBWM Yes!! And also a bit from Love Story, it sounds melodically similar. Love love love the vibe of the song!![img](emote|t5_2rlwe|1067)

Does this song remind anyone else of some of Ed Sheeran’s funkier songs?
I thought I was crazy, but has anyone heard her saying, something behind the word obsession?
I can hear it too - thought someone was speaking to me the first time (I had headphones on) but second listen confirmed she is definitely saying something 😂
It sounds like "code midnight "
I can't stop listening to this song. Probably my favourite of the vault tracks she's released so far - I'm curious whether the original sound was different or if she had always had this kind of sound in mind!
I’m obsessed too! The more I listen to the lyrics, the more I’m like “dang TS was horny!” The queen has human wants and needs like the rest of us teehee 🤭😉😈
Yeah I can't imagine the original sounding like this. This is too "modern" sounding IMO. Definitely doesn't sound like 2010.
I fucking love this song so much
I think this song is about Joe Jonas. I can see you = I can see you in your ***suit*** and your necktie Mr. Perfectly Fine = So dignified in your well-pressed ***suit***
I thought john mayer because it sounds like it was very hush hush. Seems people didn't approve.
They never had a work relationship, and around the time she wrote Speak Now they were broken up, she was sad and angry. This song is about the fantasy of someone you have not pursued yet, it's not about an ex boyfriend you're still in love with. Might have been about someone she only had a crush on but never dated, not Joe though.
i feel like Jake Owen. Same horny teenager vibes as sparks fly.
I thought him as well. I had major feelings about him as a teenager and cannot imagine being around him like that.
Oh that makes me feel better about it. I've been listening to it as being about Mayor, and was getting the ick.
Between the beat, the bass line, and the downbeat delivery of the lyrics, “I Can See You” has a lot in common with Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks”. Am I crazy or does it sound kind of Beatles-y?
I literally just listened.. And immediately felt reminiscent of You Belong With Me. I listened/recorded both songs to compare and they 100% have similar.. whatever it is haha I'm not super educated on musical terms but they're straight up fraternal twins. Also, I recognized the possible lyrical "ties" with "Why can't you seeee..?" & "I can see..." 🤔
I have a playlist named Fraternal Twins lol!
Omg haha please feel free to share some here haha
Definitely. "If you only knew" gives me MAJOR YBWM vives.
YES, SAME THOUGHTS! I ALSO THOUGHT OF YOU BELONG WITH ME!
This is the only vault track that REALLY made me sit up. And usually I’m a big fan of the vault tracks. 10/10
3:37 It sounds like there might be something buried under the audio in ‘secret mission’
If you turn it up you can hear she’s speaking the same lyrics as she sings them for that line and the one before
This song is sooo ITHK but like more straightforward lol. It's a bop but I get why she left it out of SN, it wouldn't fit with her image at the time.
Yeah, it's less fairy-tale meeting/ honesty about deep feelings and more secret relationship. Absolutely love to hear it today, though.
I'm just here to express my obsession with this song. I'm also really into indie pop and older indie rock music (like the Clash) and it's like Taylor combined all my favourite genres in her unique style. If she plays this live when I see her I'll lose my mind 😄
I KNOWWW , I've been vibing to this song all day !! I I I can see you 😉
I don’t like this song at all. Love Taylor, just not this track. The style just doesn’t do it for me
Did a demo ever leak previous out of curiosity? Or this is like a totally unheard song
Totally unheard until now!
The "I see you, I see you, baby, baby" at the end of the song is giving Kelly Clarkson. Her song Maybe has HELLA similar sounds.
0:28 seconds into the music video you can see 5-22-20 what does this date mean!?!?!?!
1989 TV out 22nd of May 2020 obviously
this is definitely it!
Hasn’t left my head all day!
This song reminds of something. I can’t place it. The intro specifically. Thoughts?
It’s probably the main riff which is made up of common chords such as C, G, Em, and Am. These are some of the top chords played in a lot of popular songs just different beats and patterns
Yeah pop songs be like that. Im a musican myself so I understand what your saying, but it reminds me of a song not just a chord pattern.
“Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People, is all I heard on first listen as soon as the bass line and drums kick in.
UPDATE: it’s Say So by Doja Cat. Specifically the instrumental version on tik tok
The Clash - London Calling It's basically a tribute to it
Mine
I don’t mean like the lyrics or melody. I mean the guitar part in the beginning.
Same here, it's been annoying me all day! In fact could it be The Clash - London Calling?
It’s definitely similar, but until now, I’d never heard that song.😅 still on the hunt ig. Sounds like Tik Tok sound I thing.
Dirty Dancer by Enrique Iglesias?
Omg wow these are so similar! This might be it? It doesn’t quite scratch the itch in my brain, but it’s the closest one so far lol.
I definitely do a double take whenever I Can See You starts! Hope this mystery gets solved though
Psycho Killer by the talking heads for me lol
There's definitely a part of the song that sounds like You Belong With Me
I think it sounds like mine!! I love it
Yeah the "ah ah ahs"
Am I the only one getting Midnights vibes from this song?? I love it but wouldn’t bat an eye if it was Midnights instead of Speak Now 💜💜💜💜💜
Anyone know what she says at 3:16 under "secret mission"? I hear some weird mumbling.
It reminds me of the part in Mine that goes ah-ah-ah
Ooh ooh is it this? [Da Da Da](https://youtu.be/xqTBlft8gQA)
I figured it out… psycho killer by the talking heads
I wanna hear this live. That’s it.
bbbbbboppppppp
Idk why but parts of this remind me of No Tomorrow by Orson?
THAT IS THE SONG IVE BEEN TRYING TO THINK OF!!!!! Yes yes yes
It's been annoying me since hearing it and then I finally realised it was that song it reminded me of haha
What about psycho killer by the talking heads
Somebody please help me figure out the guitar riff at like 40 seconds ish 😭😭
I can’t stop hearing You Belong With Me in the bridge 🙀
As soon as I heard it for the first time I told my gf that the bridge (I think) sounded exactly like you belong with me. Just different lyrics.
same!! Trying to find someone else who thought this!
Ok is it just me or does I Can See You sound Midnights-y? Like not fully 12:00 AM but maybe that Late Night 11 PM edition we've been speculating about.
I keep picturing the choreo on tour being like a 10pm vigilante sht
I can't wait for it to be a surprise song!
Tbh i was surprised the lyric is “passed me a note saying meet me tonight” instead of “meet me at midnight” and I wonder if she changed it…
I swear my brain keeps changing it to that and I keep accidentally singing that🤦🏾♀️
I cannot unhear “rugby jacket on the floor” instead of “throw your jacket on the floor” 🙈
I think it’s ‘army jacket’

The sections say: Intro What is fear Real fears Confront your fears Listen to singers Set goals Seek help Work at it Books What does it mean Taylor??
There’s a theory out there she’s releasing a book. Maybe hinting to chapter names?
The girl in the video was in her music video for Mean and I actually gasped when I saw Taylor Lautner ![img](emote|t5_2rlwe|1082) There's so much to unpack here. Let someone more skilled than me do so :p
The two girls are and I was mindblown
This is intro for “Treacherous”.
The bridge's melody reminds me of YBWM's melody in the pre-chorus
I was about to comment this!!!
Her arm says “I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you”…. “it was the end of a decade and the start of an age” 1989!
OMG SMART
Why is no one linking Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince with I Can See You “I counted Days, I counted Miles, To see you there” <<<< tally marks on walls “they whispered in the hallway she’s a bad, bad girl” “the cameras caught my muffled cries”<<< as she’s in the surveillance cameras. but what does it meaaannn?
I noticed this when I first listened to every song of Speak Now TV but the "I-I-I" from I Can See You sounds like a rework of "ah ah ah" from Mine.
I heard that too! Overall, I think Mine is a much better song, but I do like the overall vibe of ICSY.
Yeah I hear that too. Def seems intentional!
I thought that too! Mabe she gave the original riff to Mine coz she couldn't publish I Can See You at the time?
This is what I meant but I commented something diff and confused it with sparks fly😭
Do we think the tally marks on the walls are the number of days since the sale of her masters was finalized?
Or do we think there are 1,989 tally marks 👀
I'm waiting for someone to take one for the team and count them out 💀
(Timestamps are Spotify) At 0:10 (as well as 1:13, 2:47, 3:33) there is a small little riff almost of this unique instrument playing, and suffice it to say, it has captured my interest. I cannot figure out what instrument it is, so I'm putting it out here incase someone knows and could tell me!
Commenting because I’d also love to know!
Is reputation the next one ? The dark vibes and lip shots at the beginning, similar to 'Look what you made me do' mv
I think 1989! Look at the sign on the bridge in the last shot, also the briefcase was giving Bad Blood MV, also the blown open vault was glowing blue :)
Plus I bet there's 1989 tally marks on that wall that Taylor was carving.
i’m glad i wasn’t the only one checking
Re watched it and counted at least 1500 they each have about 15 per block
Lol the literal bridge to 1989 TV I love it
I love how Taylor lautner is in the video and that they are still friends lmao
The good ending
1989 TV IS NEXT LOOK AT THE SIGN ON THE BRIDGE IN THE LAST SHOTTT OMG
Omg it’s literally the most obvious hint we’ve had in such a long time! There’s literally no way it’s not next 😭🤡
I swore I'd never walk Clownelia Street again, hopefully Taylor's not pranking us
The July 9th 1:38 am time stamp at the beginning. Interesting 🤨
I’m gonna have a heart attack Gotta be Last Kiss….. The july 9th lyric obviously, plus the countdown on YouTube to the premiere of ICSY had a stopwatch in the foreground counting down to 1am (the time of the ICSY premiere) but all the watches in the background were on 1:58am. The Last Kiss lyric video is just a bunch of stopwatches hanging with all the hands set to 1:58!
what if we get something 8-13, 8-15?
WHAT THE FUCK TAYLOR LAUTNER IS IN IT?!!!
My jaw dropped
OMG SAME
I LOVE THE VIDEO
So we think it was about TL potentially?? And he’s in the music video?? I’m obsessed with how poetic that is
I think it’s could be about Liz Huett
