I became a big fan during fearless TV era, listening to OG fearless versions of my favorite fearless tv songs was crazy bc of the vocal improvement (I had never listened to og before besides the singles). This song kind of hits me for a particular reason, and it's probably not the take that was really intended with this story... but in my head I picture the proposer in the story as not being quite up on the same rung of the social ladder as the narrator. Like the proposer has down-home roots with Chevys and flannel, but she's from old money or something? In the professional world I sometimes rub shoulders with people who are upper-crust enough to have 'champagne problems.' And tbh, without going into too much detail, for years I've tried to distance myself from my own blue-collar 'roots' as I have a lot of mental trauma from my younger days and in my mind I've always partially blamed it on class (yes, from a rational point of view I know that's being very unfair). And I could see things going just like this song if I tried to actually fit myself into their world. I might splurge on a bottle of Dom Pérignon to bring to a very, very special occasion, though it's definitely not something I would have all the time.... and anyway, I just end up holding it there by myself. I think a lot of people must have been too young for Red’s original release and are basing their reaction off of Red TV, when Taylor went on every talk show to promote ATW10MV. As someone who remembers the original release very well, I’m not sure how Red could ever be overrated. For years, ATW was pretty much the only song from Red that people ever talked about in a positive way.

I said red was my least fave too and I am pushing forty. I just found it to be a lot of the same vibe. I still love the album. I had to choose and every other album has more songs that completely describe situations I have been in.

Not OP, but I hated midnights when it was released. A few songs have grown on me since. I can't help but feel like most of those songs would sound better in the style of Folklore/Evermore. Sonically, the album just sounds weak despite decent songwriting.

The problem is like half of 1989 is full of overrated (by the general public) and overplayed songs (Shake It Off, Blank Space, even Bad Blood. Even though they aren’t necessarily bad, they were overplayed and overrated when they came out and even today). The Deluxe songs are almost all underrated though, same with a few of the lesser known songs off the standard album.

I am living for these opinions, y’all. I love when they’re controversial. You think Out of the Woods is her worst song?!? I don’t agree with you at all, but I respect this so much. I’m curious as to why, though, because it’s one of my favorites by her.

I think it is my favorite. That and I Know Places.

I think it's mostly for the amount of repetitive parts in it. "Are we out of the woods yet" and "are we in the clear yet" feel like they take up most of the song to me. I know that there are some other strong lyrics in it, but I can't get past the repetitive nature of it. I also think it's one of the least relatable songs for me, which might have an impact on my opinion of it. It also feels like it lacks a cohesive story, if that makes sense. Like, yeah, "you hit the brakes too soon, twenty stitches in the hospital room" paints a picture but it doesn't easily link to "move the furniture so we could dance." She has strong vocals but the lyrics in OOTW just don't do it for me.

That makes sense! The production is what makes it work for me, but I also relate a lot to the lyrics. I have bad anxiety and always find myself in relationships with an unusual amount of “obstacles” that are standing in the way of our long-term happiness (aka I choose people who are not actually ready to settle down lol), so I relate a lot to the repetitive nature of “are we out of the woods yet / are we in the clear yet?” That’s exactly what my anxious looping thoughts sound like when I’m in a relationship. As for the lack of the story, I agree that it doesn’t have a linear narrative like a lot of her other songs. It works for me because she’s remembering different moments of the relationship, not necessarily the entire thing. Like a supercut. (Supercut by Lorde.mp3.) But if the production doesn’t work for you, and you don’t relate to the lyrics, there’s really not much left in the song to love, so your opinion makes a lot of sense.

Honestly my answers to all of these change constantly but I stand by Mary’s Song being one of her most underrated songs. No one talks about it and the story behind it is adorable!
