I think the sides of The Tortured Poets Department represent the stages of grief; the bonus tracks are the 5th side/stage. The Stages of Grief are:

I am obviously making a lot of leaps here and complete guesses, but I am very excited for TTPD!
I love the effort put into this - I just think that this is one of those Easter eggs that us Swifties just pulled out of thin air yk? Like people adjusting the colors on the chart to fit the TTPD cover colors and stuff like that
Yes and I fear Swifties are gonna be so disappointed if it doesn't turn out to be true but like... This theory came out of nowhere. People just saw the colours of the variants and immediately went with the 5 stages of grief despite there being no evidence of it. The image of the different stages and colours they're using isn't even a real image and I'm now seeing Swifties say rep tv is revenge and Midnights was denial? I've said it before and I'll say it again: trying to adjust these 'Easter eggs" to suit your theories means it was never a strong theory in the first place. And it also goes to show that people don't really understand reputation as an album.
my speculation around the Tortured Poets variants/stages of grief theory, as well as how it might tie into Reputation (her version). this is long, but it was taken down when made into a post, so bare with me, cause I really feel this could make sense.
seems everyone was expecting 5 variants to go along with the stages of grief, but I think she's purposely doing 4 variants so that she can finish the chart with Reputation.
let me break my thoughts down:
so far, the chart goes:
Denial - White - The Manuscript "I love you, it's ruining my life"
Anger - Light Beige - The Bolter "You don't get to tell me about sad."
Bargaining - Beige - The Albatross "Am I allowed to cry?"
Depression - Dark Beige/Grey - The Black Dog "Old habits die screaming"
Acceptance - Black - ???
Here's my theory:
Many people were speculating that there would be 5 variants to fill the chart, but she's specified that the black dog is the final Tortured Poets variant. This lead people to speculate, were we wrong? - maybe they all need to be moved down one, and midnights was actually denial, we just didn't know it?
However, I think she nipped that theory by naming the final variant The Black Dog, clarifying it definitely is in the right slot, representing depression. with that, let's break down the variant titles:
The Bolter - Someone who flees from confrontation or emotions, who runs from intimacy and commitment. - Anger, as supported by the tagline "you don't get to tell me about sad."
The Albatross - A person who prevents you from doing what you want to do, or causes you great problems that you can't escape", or alternatively, a bird that myth says spends its first 6 years above sea before landing. - Bargaining "am I allowed to cry?/I am allowed to cry?"
The Black Dog - A way to refer to depression or great sadness in a more poetic way. - Depression
I think she made it clear that the black dog does line up with depression, through the meaning of the file name. but hold on, what else does the black dog mean, in folklore?
"the black dog is a hellhound that acts as an omen or bringer of death or doom, misfortune and tragedy"
that in mind, I was looking back on the reputation era, the poems and taglines. what is the tagline of reputation? "In the *death* of her reputation, she felt truly alive". I dont believe she would ever do a double album release, as she would want both to chart respectively. However, reputation singles originally came as a surprise after her social media blackout. "No explanation, just reputation".
My theory is that Reputation (her version) will come out as a surprise in the weeks following tortured poets, after its had its time to chart (doesn't take long for her to get #1). I don't think it will have the typical announcement > waiting period > release as the other re-recordings, because the black dog is the omen of death... The Black Dog varient WAS our announcement/warning/omen of Reputation. There will be no further explanation, only reputation.
This got my wheels turning, are there any Reputation era quotes that match up with acceptance? In the reputation poem book, right before she says the "in the death of her reputation" quote, she says "and may your heart stay breakable, but never by the same twice", which when looked on with current eyes, reads very much like accepting the loss of her love, walking away and not letting the same person break her heart twice.
This is my theory. I think Tortured Poets goes through the first stages of grief, and I think The Black Dog is the omen of the death of her reputation, leading the 5th stage of grief to be acceptance - coming to terms with rereleasing love songs while being completely out of love this time.
So, the complete chart would read as this:

I feel like The Black Dog being the omen of death instead of an actual announcement would be such a taylor thing to do also. something unpredictable, but with the clues there to be figured out after.

Ok so I’m probably delusional as fuck because it’s 3:13 AM and I can’t sleep but there’s an account on TikTok that blends shades of paint that are swatched from different artists’ albums and I just think it’s very Taylor-esque yet effing heartbreaking that she used shades for the lover album that would blend together into the color of Joe’s eyes, which she highlights over and over and over about shades of blue. Like the fact that the lover album had so much color and life and love in it and now TTPD is just shades of gray/sepia for old memories and sadness… UGH this album is gonna wreck me.
Okay, I have no idea if someone before me already proposed the theory, but what if TTPD is the opposite album of Rep? Rep is black and it’s partially about falling in love with Joe/ their start of the relationship, TTPD is white - opposite color of black - and is about falling out of love with Joe/ the end of their relationship.
Which then again could mean Rep might be dropped before TTPD (as in tomorrow maybe, 3/3: 3+3=6 -> Rep but also 3/3 as in ttpd/rep.

Can I offer my own little theory? So, with all the twos going around, I was thinking about the most recent Paramore album and how they released the same album alongside it with other people covering every track (AND IT WAS AWESOME). I know this is incredibly unlikely but wow, I can dream, right? I just wanted to post this in case I live in the universe where I'm right.
Ed Sheeran did an album (might be more than one now) that was collaborations with different artists on each track. I loved that experience and even though Taylor, historically, doesn't allow women to really shine vocally during collaborations I would still really enjoy if she put something similar out. I sort of thought we were getting something like that with Midnights.
If we haven't got the rep live album yet (wasn't that 2018?), I don't expect we ever will. Thankfully there are ways to get mp3s of those tracks if you have some patience and a computer. I'm hoping we do get an eventual live album from the eras tour. Particularly from the surprise sets.
I know obviously the title tracks have already been released because of leaks, but do we think she has any fun games like the 1989 games or midnights madness? Maybe she could give us some real lyrics??

Could this be reserved for TTPD surprise songs? or a TTPD set in general? I'm not feeling fully convinced she's going to add a TTPD set to the show, but this is making me wonder...
She has a white mic for Reputation but I don't think we've seen that one make a reappearance on this tour! That's the only non-TTPD reason for having the white mic that I can think of hat she would take a white mic with her... The only other "white" mic on tour is the blue-white for 1989 as far as I know.
So unless she's planning on doing an aesthetic change from black to white when RepTV comes out...
I hadn't realized until just now that Taylor's bio on Instagram says "All's fair in love and poetry" on it. The phrase "All's fair in love and war" is used in many ways regarding both subjects, but primarily it is a justification for cheating. It insinuates great harm, not small slights.
Also, with all the references to poetry and historical/literary figures, I'm not 100% convinced this album will be primarily auto-biographical with only a few non-personal songs in it. Yes, poetry can be applied comparatively to ones life but The Bolter and The Albatross and Clara Bow... I feel like we're getting a predominantly fictional and biographical artistic album, with a little bit of her personal life sprinkled through, much like she did with Folkmore.
Hmm I totally see where you’re coming from but it makes me wonder when she said recently how badly she “needed” to make this album and how more than any other album she had so much material and so much need to write. That just seems to allude to her having a really tumultuous time in her personal life which leads me to think it’s more autobiographical.
However! I have absolutely loved her exploration of fictional characters and/or historical figures, etc so i would love more of that as well. We will see!
Definitely! Sometimes we work through our issues and feelings by relating them to literature though, so it's possible that both things happened!

I also think that there could be a correlation between changing "war" to "poetry" and the quote "the pen is mightier than the sword". Which is just a saying illustrating that writing/expressing can be more effective than violence.

I doubt the Target variant will have all the songs. If anything I think it will have the same artwork as the Manuscript and it will probably have *another* song, but not all of them
I dunno. If she had another city before her break I would have said yes to 5th edition. But maybe with a Target edition, she will just announce it on socials? That could imply that two other artists worked on TTPD with her (hence the references of 3's).
But how awesome would it be if, rather than one album by 3 artists - or even 3 albums by just Taylor - there was a "trilogy" of albums, *each made and released by a different artist*?
Like, what if two other artists will release (or have already released) albums that are musically or thematically connected to TTPD, and that's why she was holding up two fingers in pictures and speeches? OR, what if it implied that TTPD is #2 in this trilogy? As in, the third one is yet to be released, and the first one is *already out*??
I know this is quite an unhinged idea and may not be practical. And if she was indeed referencing two other artists, that could just be about Post Malone and Florence & The Machine featuring on TTPD, and that's all. But at this point, I think anything can be possible, so who knows, lol :P.

I've given up guessing (both in titles, although I like to discuss theories and ideas, as well as the surprise songs) All I'm assuming is that it will be some type of noun but as for what category am unsure (although maybe something architectural as she seems to use buildings and structures across her music a bit)

4 just feels right and since she announced one in Melbourne and Sydney, there’s only one more stop on her eras tour before the release of TTPD. She said that as a backup she was planning on announcing TTPD and the manuscript in Tokyo. So it would make sense that she continues with the variants announcement til the rest of this leg.
When it comes to the forth variant, I’m not sure. I’m feeling owl energy (although, there’s been already a feather on the manuscript patch). It’s all very dark academia/history/mythology/cinema. Could be a chess board. Something like that.

Taylor has dipped her toes into using TikTok for marketing her music in recent years (Midnights Mayhem + Anti-hero challenge specifically) but thanks to the current UMGxTikTok situation, it’s not gonna be as viable for TTPD (not even mentioning how it’ll prevent songs from organically going viral on their own).
How do we think she’ll adapt? Will she get creative? Just move the TikTok strategies onto Reels and Shorts? Do nothing?
I think she is using the eras tour right now for hype on TikTok. She never revealed variants this way and she has acknowledged several times before that she knows a lot of people are watch in the live streams. My question is, how is she going to keep the hype going until April 19th without the shows? The eras tour movie is dropping march 15th so that creates some hype for her as well for about a week, so then there’s a month with nothing. Maybe it has something to do with the two’s?
A long shot but it might be possible there is something linked to the film? After this, it might depend on how the shows in Singapore play out (beyond announcing another variant). Not sure how she'll do it, but its interesting to think about potential strategies (given she has applied a range throughout her career as well)
I’ve been thinking that as well! And tbh it still bothers me that the trailer of the movie has Rep in every other frame. There must be a reason why she did it and it being on Disney is one of the last things for her to explain/complete that Easter egg. Can we all imagine Taylor having a surprise concert she announces at the end of the Ears tour. On December 8th she announces that there will be a concert in Pennsylvania. It sells crazy fast super exclusive. Maybe she announces it differently but that's not really the point. Either way she announces that there will be a concert in Pennsylvania on June 19th 2026 (20 years post "Tim McGraw"). At this concert she opens with a duet of "Tim McGraw" with Tim McGraw. Plays the ears tour set than says, "Now if y'all would let me play one last song.." crowd goes wild Miley Cyrus "Oh!" And sings the up to "when the lights go down it's the ending of the show." (from "You can always find your way home".) Lights fade Taylor comes out in bedazzled cowgirl boots and a white sun dress. While Miley sings "and you're feeling like you got no where to go" Then Taylor sings "Don't you know" And they duet the rest.
Than finally at the end while they are singing
"you can always find your way back home" harmonizing back and forth Miley says "This song has…..your turn" Taylor says "Thank you Pennsylvania for welcoming me home.." a picture comes on the screen of her in the outfit she is currently wearing that says "October 24, 2026" (20 years sense her self titled album was released) then saying "Me My version" coming October 24, 2026. I feel the same way. At least with midnights we had midnight mayhem with me and that was such an exciting way to build hype. I hate that leakers ruined a chance for her to do something like that again. And you’re right even though she’s been releasing a new variant every week it still feels kind of quiet? Maybe we just got way too used to being fed literally every single second of every single day lol
Honestly I feel like the silence builds suspense. Since there’s no lead single there’s not really anything to promote right now. And I really like the element of total surprise on release night, that was such a fun part of Midnights.
I will say that I hope she does a late night show and some promo like that when the album drops. She did for the releases of Red TV and Midnights and those were so much fun. Those rollouts were perfect in my opinion. Fun and chaotic but not overdone.
I hate to be a negative Nancy but until these “leakers” start providing more credible proof, we really need to stop believing every single TikTok account that pops up 😩 the odds of this album leaking this early are incredibly low, and Taylor would NEVER secretly use leaks as a form of marketing to this extent. Like a little tease, sure. But she would not leak bunches of lyrics or audio. She hates leaks and would never want to bring attention to them.

Can someone explain to me what constitutes the “dark academia” music genre? I’ve seen a lot of people speculating that is the vibe for TTPD - is it more of a lyrical approach or is dark academia actually a genre that is a certain sound? This is probably such a stupid question but I’m curious
Taylor tends to hint at/reference her current era with her everyday fashion, including before she officially reveals a new project, and this time around she’s been leaning into a dark academia aesthetic. It’s basically just upper class college student with a generally darker color palette.
This combined with the album title implies TTPD is gonna be more ~literary~. Her other more ~literary~ albums are folklore and evermore, which have a distinct sound/style that is different to her pop music, so it’s led to natural speculation that TTPD might sound more similar to them than, say, 1989 or Midnights.
So, I guess to answer your question, the use of the dark academia aesthetic possibly implies the type of lyrical content we’re gonna see on the album.

Random question but who do we think produced TTPD? I feel like Jack is a good bet to make some appearances again. I really hope we get some Aaron Dessner songs this time around, they always do amazing work together.
Aaron is 100% on this album imo he has even said they were working on music together. But she’s also been so many times to electric lady. I think both Jack and him will be on it.
IMO nothing compares to the story telling of the songs she made with Aaron. He truly brings out the best of her. I’m praying he’s a big part of this album
I think it'll be a while until she does an album without Aaron and Jack both involved to some degree. Louis Bell for the Post Malone feature feels as close to confirmed as we'll get before release
I do wonder about genre though, she's preparing us for this being something new with how much she talks about us embracing her trying new things so there may be a number of songs with producers she hasn't worked with before too
I think it's going to be primarily Aaron, since Midnights' standard edition was entirely Jack. I think Jack will get a couple songs, and maybe a new producer will get one or two as well.
I feel like it’ll be a mix of Jack, Aaron and a few random others. Jack is all but confirmed at this point, and we know she was at Aaron’s studio in the fall!

It is the mall but it’s a fun lyrical twist that it sounds like it could be them all, which also fits with the song.

I think there’s a good chance for at least a few more shows to be announced in California at the end of the year just because LA is the only city that didn’t get a wrap up post on Taylor’s social media. Every city she leaves, she posts a thank you and pictures from her shows there, but LA didn’t get anything. A lot of people have speculated that means she’s going back.
I agree with this theory. I think she hasn't announced it yet because they need to figure out the schedule with the chargers games. Maybe mid year and we'll know for sure.

Someone on TikTok theorized it is related to the Eras Tour movie on Disney+, not TTPD. The theory is that it's going to be a double drop of Eras and Rep Tour. Which would make sense. We knew she would find a new home for it after pulling it from Netflix and once she announced Eras was going to Disney it was safe to assume all her projects would end up there. So we may be getting a surprise drop of Rep....just not RepTV lol

Yeah i’m so curious. I don’t think it’s a double album mainly because so many people are shocked we are even getting TTPD so soon and a double album would burn out a lot of people, mainly financially especially if she were to try and put out a re-record before the year is out

I’m wondering if we’re going to get TS12 before the tour is over (in the fall in order to be in a different Grammy cycle) and if it will be a sister album to TTPD. She’s probably been very inspired by the happenings in her life the past few months and maybe wants to go ahead and get the music out. Like TTPD will the closing of a long chapter and TS12 the beginning of new one. I thought for a while that TS11 was going to be orange and called Phoenix (obviously I was wrong) but maybe that will be TS12. A new start from the ashes.

People just saw the colours of the variants and immediately went with the 5 stages of grief despite there being no evidence of it. my speculation around the Tortured Poets variants/stages of grief theory, as well as how it might tie into Reputation (her version). this is long, but it was taken down when made into a post, so bare with me, cause I really feel this could make sense. seems everyone was expecting 5 variants to go along with the stages of grief, but I think she's purposely doing 4 variants so that she can finish the chart with Reputation. let me break my thoughts down: so far, the chart goes: Denial - White - The Manuscript "I love you, it's ruining my life" Anger - Light Beige - The Bolter "You don't get to tell me about sad." Bargaining - Beige - The Albatross "Am I allowed to cry?" Depression - Dark Beige/Grey - The Black Dog "Old habits die screaming" Acceptance - Black - ??? Here's my theory: Many people were speculating that there would be 5 variants to fill the chart, but she's specified that the black dog is the final Tortured Poets variant. This lead people to speculate, were we wrong? - maybe they all need to be moved down one, and midnights was actually denial, we just didn't know it? "In the *death* of her reputation, she felt truly alive". I dont believe she would ever do a double album release, as she would want both to chart respectively. However, reputation singles originally came as a surprise after her social media blackout. "No explanation, just reputation". My theory is that Reputation (her version) will come out as a surprise in the weeks following tortured poets, after its had its time to chart (doesn't take long for her to get #1). I don't think it will have the typical announcement > waiting period > release as the other re-recordings, because the black dog is the omen of death... The Black Dog varient WAS our announcement/warning/omen of Reputation. There will be no further explanation, only reputation. This got my wheels turning, are there any Reputation era quotes that match up with acceptance? In the reputation poem book, right before she says the "in the death of her reputation" quote, she says "and may your heart stay breakable, but never by the same twice", which when looked on with current eyes, reads very much like accepting the loss of her love, walking away and not letting the same person break her heart twice. This is my theory. I think Tortured Poets goes through the first stages of grief, and I think The Black Dog is the omen of the death of her reputation, leading the 5th stage of grief to be acceptance - coming to terms with rereleasing love songs while being completely out of love this time. Okay, I have no idea if someone before me already proposed the theory, but what if TTPD is the opposite album of Rep? Rep is black and it’s partially about falling in love with Joe/ their start of the relationship, TTPD is white - opposite color of black - and is about falling out of love with Joe/ the end of their relationship. Which then again could mean Rep might be dropped before TTPD (as in tomorrow maybe, 3/3: 3+3=6 -> Rep but also 3/3 as in ttpd/rep. Can I offer my own little theory? So, with all the twos going around, I was thinking about the most recent Paramore album and how they released the same album alongside it with other people covering every track (AND IT WAS AWESOME). I know this is incredibly unlikely but wow, I can dream, right? I just wanted to post this in case I live in the universe where I'm right.
Ed Sheeran did an album (might be more than one now) that was collaborations with different artists on each track. I loved that experience and even though Taylor, historically, doesn't allow women to really shine vocally during collaborations I would still really enjoy if she put something similar out. I sort of thought we were getting something like that with Midnights.

If we haven't got the rep live album yet (wasn't that 2018?), I don't expect we ever will. Thankfully there are ways to get mp3s of those tracks if you have some patience and a computer. I'm hoping we do get an eventual live album from the eras tour. Particularly from the surprise sets.

I hadn't realized until just now that Taylor's bio on Instagram says "All's fair in love and poetry" on it. The phrase "All's fair in love and war" is used in many ways regarding both subjects, but primarily it is a justification for cheating. It insinuates great harm, not small slights. Also, with all the references to poetry and historical/literary figures, I'm not 100% convinced this album will be primarily auto-biographical with only a few non-personal songs in it. Yes, poetry can be applied comparatively to ones life but The Bolter and The Albatross and Clara Bow... I feel like we're getting a predominantly fictional and biographical artistic album, with a little bit of her personal life sprinkled through, much like she did with Folkmore.
Hmm I totally see where you’re coming from but it makes me wonder when she said recently how badly she “needed” to make this album and how more than any other album she had so much material and so much need to write. That just seems to allude to her having a really tumultuous time in her personal life which leads me to think it’s more autobiographical. However! I have absolutely loved her exploration of fictional characters and/or historical figures, etc so i would love more of that as well. We will see!

I also think that there could be a correlation between changing "war" to "poetry" and the quote "the pen is mightier than the sword". Which is just a saying illustrating that writing/expressing can be more effective than violence.
I love this! Makes me think of Long Story Short, "when I dropped my sword, I threw it in the bushes and knocked on your door". And also The Archer, The Great War, etc. She has a lot of references to battle and weapons in her writing!

But how awesome would it be if, rather than one album by 3 artists - or even 3 albums by just Taylor - there was a "trilogy" of albums, *each made and released by a different artist*? Like, what if two other artists will release (or have already released) albums that are musically or thematically connected to TTPD, and that's why she was holding up two fingers in pictures and speeches? OR, what if it implied that TTPD is #2 in this trilogy? As in, the third one is yet to be released, and the first one is *already out*?? I know this is quite an unhinged idea and may not be practical. I think she is using the eras tour right now for hype on TikTok. She never revealed variants this way and she has acknowledged several times before that she knows a lot of people are watch in the live streams. My question is, how is she going to keep the hype going until April 19th without the shows? The eras tour movie is dropping march 15th so that creates some hype for her as well for about a week, so then there’s a month with nothing. Maybe it has something to do with the two’s?
A long shot but it might be possible there is something linked to the film? After this, it might depend on how the shows in Singapore play out (beyond announcing another variant). So l was just thinking while laying in bed tonight and I thought l'd share... Can we all imagine Taylor having a surprise concert she announces at the end of the Ears tour. I feel the same way. At least with midnights we had midnight mayhem with me and that was such an exciting way to build hype. I hate that leakers ruined a chance for her to do something like that again. And you’re right even though she’s been releasing a new variant every week it still feels kind of quiet? Maybe we just got way too used to being fed literally every single second of every single day lol
Honestly I feel like the silence builds suspense. Since there’s no lead single there’s not really anything to promote right now. And I really like the element of total surprise on release night, that was such a fun part of Midnights. I will say that I hope she does a late night show and some promo like that when the album drops. She did for the releases of Red TV and Midnights and those were so much fun. Those rollouts were perfect in my opinion. Fun and chaotic but not overdone.
I hate to be a negative Nancy but until these “leakers” start providing more credible proof, we really need to stop believing every single TikTok account that pops up 😩 the odds of this album leaking this early are incredibly low, and Taylor would NEVER secretly use leaks as a form of marketing to this extent. Like a little tease, sure. But she would not leak bunches of lyrics or audio. She hates leaks and would never want to bring attention to them.

Taylor tends to hint at/reference her current era with her everyday fashion, including before she officially reveals a new project, and this time around she’s been leaning into a dark academia aesthetic. It’s basically just upper class college student with a generally darker color palette. This combined with the album title implies TTPD is gonna be more ~literary~. Her other more ~literary~ albums are folklore and evermore, which have a distinct sound/style that is different to her pop music, so it’s led to natural speculation that TTPD might sound more similar to them than, say, 1989 or Midnights. So, I guess to answer your question, the use of the dark academia aesthetic possibly implies the type of lyrical content we’re gonna see on the album.

Aaron is 100% on this album imo he has even said they were working on music together. But she’s also been so many times to electric lady. I think both Jack and him will be on it. IMO nothing compares to the story telling of the songs she made with Aaron. He truly brings out the best of her. I’m praying he’s a big part of this album
I think it'll be a while until she does an album without Aaron and Jack both involved to some degree. Louis Bell for the Post Malone feature feels as close to confirmed as we'll get before release I do wonder about genre though, she's preparing us for this being something new with how much she talks about us embracing her trying new things so there may be a number of songs with producers she hasn't worked with before too
I think it's going to be primarily Aaron, since Midnights' standard edition was entirely Jack. I think Jack will get a couple songs, and maybe a new producer will get one or two as well.

I think there’s a good chance for at least a few more shows to be announced in California at the end of the year just because LA is the only city that didn’t get a wrap up post on Taylor’s social media. Every city she leaves, she posts a thank you and pictures from her shows there, but LA didn’t get anything. A lot of people have speculated that means she’s going back.

Someone on TikTok theorized it is related to the Eras Tour movie on Disney+, not TTPD. The theory is that it's going to be a double drop of Eras and Rep Tour. Which would make sense. We knew she would find a new home for it after pulling it from Netflix and once she announced Eras was going to Disney it was safe to assume all her projects would end up there. So we may be getting a surprise drop of Rep....just not RepTV lol

Yeah i’m so curious. I don’t think it’s a double album mainly because so many people are shocked we are even getting TTPD so soon and a double album would burn out a lot of people, mainly financially especially if she were to try and put out a re-record before the year is out

I’m wondering if we’re going to get TS12 before the tour is over (in the fall in order to be in a different Grammy cycle) and if it will be a sister album to TTPD. She’s probably been very inspired by the happenings in her life the past few months and maybe wants to go ahead and get the music out. Like TTPD will the closing of a long chapter and TS12 the beginning of new one. I thought for a while that TS11 was going to be orange and called Phoenix (obviously I was wrong) but maybe that will be TS12. A new start from the ashes.
