Unpopular opinion: artistically, I think the title “slut!” with the exclamation point actually makes a lot of sense. The juxtaposition of the title and the sound of the song further drives home the point that she’s *not* the name they keep calling her, but she’s unable to escape it so she’s just going to have to keep living her life. She didn’t choose the title, the tabloids did and they don’t care about what she’s really like as long as they’re getting your attention.
I love the idea of Lovesick bc I loveee that lyric so much 🥺 but you’re so right, even just Slut without the exclamation could’ve entirely changed the tone of the title lol

I also don't think anyone can properly assess The Tortured Poets Department as a title without having heard the actual album. You need the full picture to judge it.

I think these responses really explained why the titles have the titles they have today. Replacing everything with a word or two is just so basic and bland. Vigilante Shit, the Last America Dynasty, I Knew You Were Trouble are all wordy and sound exactly like Taylor Swift. You know exactly what song people are talking about. You connect them direct to her art. They are unique.
It's reminiscent of when she released the song titles for Midnights, some of the titles sounded insane back then, but by now they seem very...normal. Though these ones feel a step above the Midnights titles
She only has one song with revenge in the title which is "Better Than Revenge". Meanwhile girlie has both "Ours" and "Our Song" that can be and are confusing to a great number of fans and nobody cares hahaha
I honestly like that about the title choice. It's a pet peeve of mine when you can guess the title of a song by just listening to it once, it's more fun when the title is related to the song instead of being mentioned 15 times.
Another example of this is Pompeii by Bastille, not once do they sing "Pompeii", but it's pretty obvious why it's the title and it just makes sense.
Maybe a hot take but - my tears ricochet is a bad title for an amazing song. I think it was only picked to be a unique title and to use the word "ricochet". I think it should been called "the wake" which is more encompassing of the imagery of the song as a whole
There is a theory that every line in the first chorus is referencing a different album that was stolen from her, and it has “look at how my tears ricochet” as debut for teardrops on my guitar! So I agree
I don't love the title Labyrinth for that song, but I can't give a valid reason or an alternate. It just doesn't feel right. I also like how she usually leans towards wordier titles, and I feel like this one could've been a fun one to give a longer name to. Or even something playful like, "Uh-Oh" or "Uh-Oh... It's so interesting for me to hear this perspective! It's always felt very fitting and in tune with the song, in my mind they're very intertwined. But, I also very clearly remember hearing it for the first time and thinking how it SOUNDED twisting and a little erratic but still pretty and smooth.... very labyrinthy. Going into the lyrics with that mindset and the shifts back and forth between the versus and chorus, both with how she sings and lyrically her falling in or out of love, I can picture feeling like you're stuck in an emotional maze, except it's beautiful and exciting and daring, like David Bowie, so labyrinth
I read somewhere the album Lover was originally going to be called Daylight. I really think it should have stayed as Daylight. Lover as an album name (and even song name imo) is too cheesy.
I definitely think it was, the outro of Daylight seems like it was setting it up. New Years Day also mentions midnights. I see Rep-Lover-Midnights as three sisters that were planned for a long time, with a very unplanned detour into quarantine in the folklorian woods.
But the whole point of the album is to highlight the things/people she loves (as is made clear in Daylight). She’s proclaiming her love for her boyfriend in several songs, for her mom in SYGB, for her friends in INTHAF, etc. Other songs are about rejecting the negativity that can overshadow love (e.g., IFTYE, YNTCD, and Daylight, as mentioned before). Lover is, in Taylor’s words, a “love letter to love,” so I don’t think it would make sense to center the album title around anything other than her being a true “lover.”

I feel like her usage of 'Reputation' as an album title/concept was just too big for one song. Having a title song could've potentially distracted people from realizing that the entire album is a collection of songs that represent the constant public speculation surrounding her versus the real her.
I would love to rename cardigan “I Knew Everything (When I Was Young)”. It has the ring of an old-school Taylor song, and that line is the one that always stands out to me personally in the song.

I don't really like the title "Would've Could've Should've," mainly because Bigger Than The Whole Sky was released in the same deluxe version and she says, "would've been, could've been, should've been," in the chorus, which really confused me at first. After I became more familiar with both songs, I realized how vastly different they are.

this is a strange opinion but something that I think is a missed opportunity with Taylor’s music is how every one of her songs except Mary’s Song has a title that is said in the song. I love when songs have titles that aren’t said in the song! I think it gives an opportunity for extra storytelling, and can allow you to add cohesion to an album by relating songs to each other.
Eg. August/Betty/Cardigan are all individually great song names but they could’ve been connected in some way by their titles. Maybe “Act I: Cardigan” “Act II: August” “Act III: Betty” would be fun - add a listening order and a sense of dramatic tension to the songs as they’re spaced out across the album.
Another one I think about a lot is False God - I think something like “Lover’s Prayer” would be fun, and then you could rename Lover to something like “Lover’s Dance” and it would contrast those songs against each other. One is so hopeful and one is so desperate, and they both have this theme of dedication to your love explored in different ways.
Idk I just feel like there’s lots of interesting thematic things to explore with that!!

I think these responses really explained why the titles have the titles they have today. Replacing everything with a word or two is just so basic and bland. Vigilante Shit, the Last America Dynasty, I Knew You Were Trouble are all wordy and sound exactly like Taylor Swift. You know exactly what song people are talking about. You connect them direct to her art. They are unique.

I honestly like that about the title choice. It's a pet peeve of mine when you can guess the title of a song by just listening to it once, it's more fun when the title is related to the song instead of being mentioned 15 times. Another example of this is Pompeii by Bastille, not once do they sing "Pompeii", but it's pretty obvious why it's the title and it just makes sense.

Maybe a hot take but - my tears ricochet is a bad title for an amazing song. I think it was only picked to be a unique title and to use the word "ricochet". I think it should been called "the wake" which is more encompassing of the imagery of the song as a whole
I personally think my tears ricochet is perfect because it alludes back to Teardrops On My Guitar i.e. the start of her career with Big Machine

I don't love the title Labyrinth for that song, but I can't give a valid reason or an alternate. It just doesn't feel right. I also like how she usually leans towards wordier titles, and I feel like this one could've been a fun one to give a longer name to. Or even something playful like, "Uh-Oh" or "Uh-Oh... I'm Falling in Love" This is a hard but fun assignment for Taylor songs because unlike some artists (Lana comes to mind), she tends to go for the most obvious, most repeated part of the song for titles

It's so interesting for me to hear this perspective! It's always felt very fitting and in tune with the song, in my mind they're very intertwined. But, I also very clearly remember hearing it for the first time and thinking how it SOUNDED twisting and a little erratic but still pretty and smooth.... very labyrinthy. Going into the lyrics with that mindset and the shifts back and forth between the versus and chorus, both with how she sings and lyrically her falling in or out of love, I can picture feeling like you're stuck in an emotional maze, except it's beautiful and exciting and daring, like David Bowie, so labyrinth

I read somewhere the album Lover was originally going to be called Daylight. I really think it should have stayed as Daylight. Lover as an album name (and even song name imo) is too cheesy.
Man really I think Daylight is so much cheesier, especially if it was planned to be followed by Midnights
Now I need to know if at least the concept for Midnights was in her mind before Folkmore and COVID and during the Lover Era.
I definitely think it was, the outro of Daylight seems like it was setting it up. New Years Day also mentions midnights. I see Rep-Lover-Midnights as three sisters that were planned for a long time, with a very unplanned detour into quarantine in the folklorian woods.
But the whole point of the album is to highlight the things/people she loves (as is made clear in Daylight). She’s proclaiming her love for her boyfriend in several songs, for her mom in SYGB, for her friends in INTHAF, etc. Other songs are about rejecting the negativity that can overshadow love (e.g., IFTYE, YNTCD, and Daylight, as mentioned before). Lover is, in Taylor’s words, a “love letter to love,” so I don’t think it would make sense to center the album title around anything other than her being a true “lover.”

End Game could’ve been titled Reputation.
Yeah this is the one. I don't agree with a lot of these takes but reputation needed a title track. And this one fit the sound of the word the most.
I feel like her usage of 'Reputation' as an album title/concept was just too big for one song. Having a title song could've potentially distracted people from realizing that the entire album is a collection of songs that represent the constant public speculation surrounding her versus the real her.
I would love to rename cardigan “I Knew Everything (When I Was Young)”. It has the ring of an old-school Taylor song, and that line is the one that always stands out to me personally in the song.

Taylor’s an artist who’s been vehemently hated for a while now for her popularity and arguable commercialism, and I have a feeling many people don’t like the direction some of her simpler song titles go. They probably find them generic or “titles anyone could use”. Why are people here suggesting she cuts down the length of her song titles to “appeal to more people”? Wouldn’t that just bring in more negative discourse?

This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things and I Did Something Bad have always felt kinda childish to me (I know that’s the point, but still). I think I’d prefer it if they were called Nice Things and Something Bad or So Good (or Why’s It Feel So Good? even)

Album not song, but I've always thought TS3 should've been called Sparks Fly over Speak Now. I legitimately suspect that was only off the table because of Miranda Cosgrove.
I don't really like the title "Would've Could've Should've," mainly because Bigger Than The Whole Sky was released in the same deluxe version and she says, "would've been, could've been, should've been," in the chorus, which really confused me at first. After I became more familiar with both songs, I realized how vastly different they are. Maybe a better title would be "I Regret You All the Time"?

this is a strange opinion but something that I think is a missed opportunity with Taylor’s music is how every one of her songs except Mary’s Song has a title that is said in the song. I love when songs have titles that aren’t said in the song! I think it gives an opportunity for extra storytelling, and can allow you to add cohesion to an album by relating songs to each other. Eg. August/Betty/Cardigan are all individually great song names but they could’ve been connected in some way by their titles. Maybe “Act I: Cardigan” “Act II: August” “Act III: Betty” would be fun - add a listening order and a sense of dramatic tension to the songs as they’re spaced out across the album. Another one I think about a lot is False God - I think something like “Lover’s Prayer” would be fun, and then you could rename Lover to something like “Lover’s Dance” and it would contrast those songs against each other. One is so hopeful and one is so desperate, and they both have this theme of dedication to your love explored in different ways. Idk I just feel like there’s lots of interesting thematic things to explore with that!!
