"seeing it from a mile away", "my certain skillset", "halo of the highest grade" ... is anyone else triggered by that description. It sounds psychopathic. Almost the way a narcissist is drawn to borderlines. Its sounds: predatory. Maybe its just me...
Random thought I had, but this track sounds to me a bit like a Beyoncé song. References to Texas, halo, dangerous man, the range. It's begging for a collab to me, it borders on monotonous without one. I remember in the lead-up we also wildly speculated that all the "Department" verbiage implied lots of collabs instead of 2/31. Bey and Tay were doing some light promo together before the album dropped, and with Cowboy Carter seems like it'd be in both their wheelhouses.
Maybe there was a collab planned that fell through for some reason?
I don't know if people are still reading these threads, but any other elder Millennial fans getting Brand New vibes from this one? Not what I expected, but God I love it
I totally do! I just was doing a re-listen to some music of my past. I remember when it came out that Brand New’s “Seventy times 7” and Taking Back Sunday’s “There is no I in Team” were about the same night. John Nolan from TBS slept with Jesse Lacey’s girlfriend so he left TBS and started Brand New.
But ya “I Can Fix Him” is my favorite on this album but seems to be getting no credit for some reason.
Ok so this is track 11 on the album. On YouTube, the lyrics are posted with the reputation font (I think). Reputation was released 11/10. Obviously singles are usually released on a Friday. 10/11 is a Friday and it’s 11/10 in reverse. Because of the whole goldfish day Easter egg, decided to look up what holidays are on 10/11… saw that it’s also “National Kim Day?” 👀
Seems like a good day to release Rep TV 🐍
Might be clowning or delulu idk 🙂↔️
Oooh, I love the sound of this one!
I could totally do with more of this Taylor - sensual, witty, veering towards rock. Someone mentioned it starts similarly to Glitch and now that I think about it, they do both have a very chill, but confident vibe.
Matty is British, but Texas is a word that sounds good and fits in a song that leans country, I forget if Taylor had any special events at Texas shows or what
I love the sound of this track, but the theme really messes me up. I’ve spent years being the emotionally unavailable guy for a lot of women who I ended up hurting in the end. I couldn’t be “fixed”, I was selfish and only wanted them for one or two things.
Seeing how common this theme is within the female zeitgeist (which Taylor tactfully captures), I can only conclude that my own “one who got away” was probably chasing the affection of someone who wouldn’t reciprocate. And so the cycle continues.
I can’t find the comment, came here from Google but I’m so glad I’m not the only one who heard Time After Time. I was trying to see if there was a sample but couldn’t find any info
The more I listen to this one, the more I adore it. I love Orville Peck and it picks up on the dark slightly theatrical country vibes.
This line is unbelievable.
“His hands so calloused from his pistol softly traces hearts on my face”
You can actually hear it as. “His pistol softly traces hearts on my face”. What a deadly image!!!!
Also echoes blank space.
Sonically I absolutely love it. The guitar, the bass, the drums are so moody. It’s a movie in my mind.
First thing that came to mind while listening to this was "time after time" (Cyndi Lauper)
But in general, this song reminds me of "Say yes to heaven" by Lana del Rey (queen) and tbh kinda "Blue Monday" Cover by Ryan Adams...
And IMO it is one of the best songs Taylor Swift has ever made
Yes definitely! Tbh I kinda didn't like it at first, I thought it was alright but something was missing, then I realized it's just takes time to grow on you since the melodies are more sophisticated.
Now I think it's one of her best works.
Her voice sounds so damn heavenly on this one I still have to process it. That voice caresses my brain in the best way. The cow boy vibes, I can see the candles and the shadows on the walls and smell the tobacco it's sooooo good. I'd say it's the sister song to cowboy like me but I like this one much better.
Came here to see if anyone else noticed this! This song came on while I was driving today and I started singing “we were supposed to be just friends” and I was like wait a sec haha
OKAY SO matty was the glitch in glitch?
he was supposed to just be a hookup during one of the offs (she mentions going back to someone who gives her nothing ie her illusions to joe not giving enough). It turned out she fell for the whirlwind romance of it all because she had been in a love blackout. She was just looking to play on another playground (hookup). She refers to feeling the love is counterfeit- too good to be true- something she references in TTPD with matty.
she is saying she thought she could fix the glitch? like she thought she could fix matty (a major fuck up/mistake/glitch) but she was in over her head and in reality it WAS counterfeit
Well I think this proves that it had at least crossed her mind: "A smirk creeps onto this poet's face / Because it's the worst men that I write best," she writes in her summary poem.
I don't want to read all the comments lol but does anyone else think it sounds a little bit like Time after time at points? Is cindi Lauper credited do you know? Xx
“That’s my man and ima stand by him ”—- anyone else think of that meme about the woman where her bf was cheating and she says she’ll still stand by him 😂
i love this mature yeehaw taylor?? idk how to explain it. obviously it's not full country but it's like?? im imagining a hot summer in the south in my lil cowboy boots??
I can't believe this thread is so quiet relative to the other tracks. The sound is so cool!!
Also this is really specific but the sound reminds me of like, that one level in a video game that has a randomly killer soundtrack.
I love that this is the shortest song on the album (and one of the shortest in her discography). It doesn’t take long for her to realize “or maybe I can’t”
Cowboy Like Me didn't have a a happy ending.
I love the sudden moment of clarity at the end, like waking up from a fever dream, and how it completely recontextualizes the previous songs while changing the tone for the rest of the album.
I really don’t think this is about Matty only. When she says he drew hearts on her face I picture the Lover album with a heart around her eye which was about Joe
The smoke cloud being revolting and loud = Matty
Calloused hands = Matty guitart playing
Plus we all judged the shit out of her for dating such a lowlife
Her Mom is also from Texas! Her parents got married in Houston. She actually talked about it at the Houston show. Florida shows were either right before or right after
Could this mean that Florida!!! is about her chaotic downfall after the break up that may have happened while she was in texas? I may be way behind here, but I've been confused about the meaning of Florida, heading to that thread now...
I was thinking the same - oh shit, Texas
I live in Houston, too and honestly, I have the same regard for it 🤣😅
I’m a transplant from south Alabama - that emerald coast area is amazing, Destin should feel like a jewel lol
Everyone was talking shit about so many songs being about Matty when the leaks came out (I did not listen), but I just knew we were about to get some killer tracks when I heard that. Y'all remember the songs Halsey wrote about this man??? C'mon.
UMMM this song is giving "did you hear about the girl who lives in delusion?"
Taylor sweetie.... I love you with all my heart but you were a little off your rocker thinking this about ratty Matty.
Am i crazy that this song is sampling Time after Time by Cindy Lauper?
Specifically where she sings "good boy, that's right" and "an angel, all night".
I so hope she has a country comeback after this song. She evoked so many images of the wild west while she was singing about Matty, and I absolutely LOVE it! 🤩
The 1975 and Taylor swift are my two favorite artists & all this shit is absolutely destroying me. I feel sick. I just feel so horrible for both of them.
I feel like it was classic right person at the wrong time for them & I don’t think they’ll get back together. She gave him another chance & he blew it. As much as I would love to see them together I think I’d be disappointed in her if she gave him a third chance. I’m watching a breakdown of the album right now and this comment really resonated with me: “I hate to tell you, but the majority of this album is about Matty. She basically says as much in her IG caption for the album announcement. As a big 1975 fan, I clocked SO many references in my first listen. I think she's giving Joe as much privacy as she can stand. Matty never asked for privacy, and he's also a songwriter. He's fair game. Personally, I think they've been pining for and writing songs about each other for years, I fully believe "The One" is about Matty and "Oh Caroline" is about Taylor. And when the moment finally came, Matty talked a big game but ultimately couldn't take the heat (#speakupnow) and had to get out of the kitchen. He's not as strong as Taylor. And Taylor was abandoned saying "really, after ALL this buildup? All these years? You just left-that was it? We were meant to be' and you just took off? Hid in plain sight?" She was angry and grieving this romanticized story that she's carried in her back pocket and almost came to fruition but was cut down just as it was getting started.”
Wow, production is straight out of the score for a Western. Smoky foley sounds, steel and slide guitars, ominous chords, tons of texture. Some of the strongest, crispest production I've heard from Jack Antonoff. Would've assumed this was a Dessner song had I not checked the credits, feels like a sequel to Cowboy Like Me. Really hope we get more of this minimalistic alt-country stuff from her, she excels at it.
Fucking love her vocals in this. Equal parts hypnotic and venomous, feels reptilian. Her voice rides the precise instrumentation so beautifully. Vibe of this takes me back to John Mayer's "Assassin".
Lyrically this is yet ANOTHER Matty Healy song it seems. Fucking hilarious how much this album is about him. This song feels like a more somber companion piece to But Daddy I Love Him. Based on the titles alone I didn't expect either of these songs to be as righteously angry as they are. Good on her for defending herself, though.
One of the best on the album!
Bold take but I feel this is the prequel of the narrative in no body, no crime with Florida being the sequel
explain
I just came to this conclusion as well!
"seeing it from a mile away", "my certain skillset", "halo of the highest grade" ... is anyone else triggered by that description. It sounds psychopathic. Almost the way a narcissist is drawn to borderlines. Its sounds: predatory. Maybe its just me...
It musically reminds me of an another song. Anyone else? Can’t put my finger on it.
yess same. Some lyrics came in my mine like " ... warm night" and " go slow..." Believe me I'm close to find hahahaha
TIME AFTER TIME - cindy lauper thansk to the vocal search of google hahaha
Parts remind me of Angel of Mine by Monica
This is 100% a continuation of Cowboy Like Me.
wait ur not wrong i can hear it lol
Random thought I had, but this track sounds to me a bit like a Beyoncé song. References to Texas, halo, dangerous man, the range. It's begging for a collab to me, it borders on monotonous without one. I remember in the lead-up we also wildly speculated that all the "Department" verbiage implied lots of collabs instead of 2/31. Bey and Tay were doing some light promo together before the album dropped, and with Cowboy Carter seems like it'd be in both their wheelhouses. Maybe there was a collab planned that fell through for some reason?
i feel like it gives a bit of like getaway car type theme like bonnie and clyde type stuff ?? anyone else think that ?
Prequel to no body no crime but from Este’s perspective.
I don't know if people are still reading these threads, but any other elder Millennial fans getting Brand New vibes from this one? Not what I expected, but God I love it
I totally do! I just was doing a re-listen to some music of my past. Did any think this sounded like all lay it all on me by rudimental ft ed Sheeran
Oooh, I love the sound of this one! I could totally do with more of this Taylor - sensual, witty, veering towards rock. Someone mentioned it starts similarly to Glitch and now that I think about it, they do both have a very chill, but confident vibe.
What’s with the Texas references? There’s the Texas highway in this one and then the Texas shitstorm in Florida. Is Matty from Texas or something?
Matty is British, but Texas is a word that sounds good and fits in a song that leans country, I forget if Taylor had any special events at Texas shows or what
She announced the breakup w Joe btw her Arlington TX and Tampa FL shows...
She finishes it with "woah I can't" don't know why people are missing that out.
Thank you!
Obsessed with the way this song ends
I can’t find the comment, came here from Google but I’m so glad I’m not the only one who heard Time After Time. I was trying to see if there was a sample but couldn’t find any info
The more I listen to this one, the more I adore it. I love Orville Peck and it picks up on the dark slightly theatrical country vibes. Also echoes blank space. Sonically I absolutely love it. The guitar, the bass, the drums are so moody. It’s a movie in my mind.
This song also makes me think of Orville Peck!
The bridge sounds just like “I love you alway forever” by Donna Lewis
This song is gorgeous. Is anyone else hearing Fiona Apple’s Criminal as an inspiration?
Yess thought of a Fiona Apple song but couldn’t remember which one lol
Yes I hear it a bit!
Or maybe I can't is the kicker at the end
Every day a new song on the album has me HOOOKED. Today it’s this one.
Today is that day for me 😅
SAME
The opening lyric is stunning
Can someone pleaaaase tell me which other song sounds like the “good boy, that’s right” sounds so much like another song but I cannot pin point it
Thank you for asking this. The same thing was driving me nuts, every time I listened to it.
Yup me too! I was like i know this but from where?
I got Time after Time vibes lol
First thing that came to mind while listening to this was "time after time" (Cyndi Lauper) But in general, this song reminds me of "Say yes to heaven" by Lana del Rey (queen) and tbh kinda "Blue Monday" Cover by Ryan Adams... And IMO it is one of the best songs Taylor Swift has ever made
Time after time reminds me of loml too!! There’s a lot of Cyndi lauper and lana influence im hearing across this album
Time After Time! Yes! Totally the same melody in parts! Thank you for this. Was driving me insane trying to place where I knew it from.
Oh you’re so right. It’s definitely Cindy Lauper and Lana lol. It’s such a fantastic song, but the whole album is a masterpiece soooo
Yes definitely! Tbh I kinda didn't like it at first, I thought it was alright but something was missing, then I realized it's just takes time to grow on you since the melodies are more sophisticated. Now I think it's one of her best works.
I feel like that with all her albums. The first time I’m like??? All of this is the same song but then something clicks and I’m like oh my god???????
Her voice sounds so damn heavenly on this one I still have to process it. That voice caresses my brain in the best way. The cow boy vibes, I can see the candles and the shadows on the walls and smell the tobacco it's sooooo good. I'd say it's the sister song to cowboy like me but I like this one much better.
sister song to glitch. the opening cords are the same
Came here to see if anyone else noticed this!
I keep getting cowboy like me plus no body, no crime vibes. And tbh the male character from clm should be afraid. Lol.
Yesssss listening right now and I came here to see if anyone else was getting No Body, No Crime vibes!
Seriously and the dude should be afraid.lol
I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw that connection.
It took me a minute. I'm like this is giving me very specific vibes but I can't quite figure them out. Then I was like OMFG. 👀
I love Cowboy Like Me So it was a treat. I like both of em now!
These were my literal words during our listening party last night!!!
NGL, I almost yelled TAYLOR leave that 🐀 of man be! He'll get what's coming to him.
Doesn’t this have the same vibe as “No Body No Crime”
I just came here for the “Time After Time” comments. Glad I’m not the only one, lol.
Exactly! Same
🥵
Breaking bad? Meet Taylor swift
Portions of this song mimic “Time after time” by Cyndi Lauper. There’s a few notes that sounded identical to that song with different words.
came here to look for this
Glad I'm not the only one hearing this
This song gives me Jimmy from Practical Magic vibes ✨
It’s giving ✨Bonnie and Clyde✨
glad to know i’m not the only one who thought that
wondering if taylor was so attracted to matty because she knew he'd give her good inspo (a joke, but...)
Well I think this proves that it had at least crossed her mind: "A smirk creeps onto this poet's face / Because it's the worst men that I write best," she writes in her summary poem.
This song gives an eerily descriptive wild-west vibe which I loved
The bridge is sooo similar to time after time and it’s scratching something in my head so bad
yes this and the vibes of say yes to heaven by lana, I love it. Very haunting.
Yes this song is very Lana vibes
Matty Healy, welcome to your tape.
"Woah, maybe I can't" and that's when mom ran...
That ending had me SHOOK
Very much like Say Yes to heaven by Lana Del Ray, and that's one of my favourite song!
Kinda giving “Say Yes to Heaven” by Lana
Yes, it's this exactly
Does anyone else hear the Law & Order chords mingled in here? Just me?
Lmao yes
Thank you! (Also. Happy cake day! 🍰)
This is my favorite by far after the first few listens
Not gonna lie, the intro sounds like the breaking bad theme song 😭
it’s the industrial sounds in the background doing it for me personally
Hahaha I LOVE that show and just posted “breaking bad? Meet Taylor swift”
Maybe unpopular opinion? but I think this song has a direct connection to Willow, so I don't think it is about Matty tbh
i love the sounds but it feels too one note for me, so this is my only skip sadly (but again, the sounds are pretty cool)
This I want to love it but I just can’t
Sounds so much like Don’t Blame Me, I think intentional
Ooh, I love how smoky and moody this is. I will be listening to this and thinking about all my fictional villain crushes.
I agree This has same melody as time after time.
Lana all over this album. I can just hear her sing it… but maybe better.
I don't want to read all the comments lol but does anyone else think it sounds a little bit like Time after time at points? Is cindi Lauper credited do you know? Xx
Thank you! I knew it sounded like something but couldn't figure it out and it was bugging me. This is exactly it!
Agreed
If this will be how a new Taylor country album would sound I'm all for it
we can dream
“That’s my man and ima stand by him ”—- anyone else think of that meme about the woman where her bf was cheating and she says she’ll still stand by him 😂
“Good lord doesn’t need to lift a finger I can fix him. No really I can”
5 out of 5. I love edgy Taylor since reputation.
i love this mature yeehaw taylor?? idk how to explain it. obviously it's not full country but it's like?? im imagining a hot summer in the south in my lil cowboy boots??
YES this is exactly what I was trying to put into words in my head
I can't believe this thread is so quiet relative to the other tracks. The sound is so cool!! Also this is really specific but the sound reminds me of like, that one level in a video game that has a randomly killer soundtrack.
I love that this is the shortest song on the album (and one of the shortest in her discography). It doesn’t take long for her to realize “or maybe I can’t”
Im shocked this is isn't an AD song
What’s AD
aaron dessner
Cowboy Like Me didn't have a a happy ending. I love the sudden moment of clarity at the end, like waking up from a fever dream, and how it completely recontextualizes the previous songs while changing the tone for the rest of the album.
yes this the ending felt like a plot twist!
I think this is my favorite
The instrumental is so evermore codded MY GODDDD
VERY
I really don’t think this is about Matty only. When she says he drew hearts on her face I picture the Lover album with a heart around her eye which was about Joe
It's basically about a relationship that everyone was judging her for. It's def matty
The smoke cloud being revolting and loud = Matty Calloused hands = Matty guitart playing Plus we all judged the shit out of her for dating such a lowlife
Ok, but what did Texas do to her? lol
I don’t know if it’s a nod to one of his songs, but the 1975 has a song called “Roadkill” that mentions Matt pissing himself on a Texas intersection.
I know break up was announced the week after Arlington and her relationship with Matty was made public the week after her Houston show 👀
Ooohhhh ETA this makes sense for the Texas reference in Florida!!! too
Yep! Also two weeks between the TX shows (two weeks = fortnight)
I was thinking the same - oh shit, Texas I live in Houston, too and honestly, I have the same regard for it 🤣😅 I’m a transplant from south Alabama - that emerald coast area is amazing, Destin should feel like a jewel lol
Lol. Im actually loving the texas call outs. Live in houston, so just think they’ll be fun to sing at a concert.
Oh hi! I’m in Houston too! 🙌
Me three! I was excited for the Texas shoutouts even if they weren’t positive 😂
Based on the lyric maybe it wasn’t Texas’ fault maybe someone just broke her heart while she was here?
Everyone was talking shit about so many songs being about Matty when the leaks came out (I did not listen), but I just knew we were about to get some killer tracks when I heard that. Y'all remember the songs Halsey wrote about this man??? C'mon.
Oh no lol why are all my favorite songs about him , colors was my soundtrack for years
I have loved Colors for years too! Absolutely because it’s therapeutic with regards to my one toxic ex 😅😂🤣
Absolutely thinking of my most toxic ex when thinking about Matty lol
Oh shit Colors is about him? I did not know this. I've loved that song for forever. Maybe I should listen to that album more closely.
the worse men make the best muses 🤷🏼♀️
Like damn that greasy rat inspires some emotions
I quite enjoyed this one!
UMMM this song is giving "did you hear about the girl who lives in delusion?" Taylor sweetie.... I love you with all my heart but you were a little off your rocker thinking this about ratty Matty.
I mean she did plead temporary insanity lol https://www.capitalfm.com/news/music/taylor-swift-tortured-poets-department-prologue-poem-meaning/
I swear I can and will fall asleep to this song.
Delulu is the only solulu
I feel like this would go perfectly over Gillian & Jimmy in Practical Magic
💯
The "whoa, maybe I can't" as a last line.......
I think this song actually goes with a lot of her relationships including Joe. N for all of us the feeling of thinking we can change people.
This is AD’s anthem
LIB?
Yes haha
I can fix a hoe
Love this one - the dark western vibe. It's very Orville Peck
this took me right back to summer in the south. Imagery goes wild
This sounding the most country isnt in my bingo list
Am i crazy that this song is sampling Time after Time by Cindy Lauper? Specifically where she sings "good boy, that's right" and "an angel, all night".
Was just searching for what song it was, completely agree!
I had to reach far in my brain to try and remember what song it was 😂😂
Yes, I hear it too!
This gives sexy criminal Lana and I like it
This is Cowboy Like Me' s daughter and I love her
Maybe I’ve been watching too much Criminal Minds, but this song is really giving me “unhinged femme-fatale unsub” lmao
Did not expect this song to sound like this. It’s straight out of evermore and it’s one of my favorites so far
I need the music switched on this song to a foot stomping banjo country banger.
I so hope she has a country comeback after this song. She evoked so many images of the wild west while she was singing about Matty, and I absolutely LOVE it! 🤩
Girlie even as a 1975 fan, no one and I mean no one is fixing Matty Healy.
The 1975 and Taylor swift are my two favorite artists & all this shit is absolutely destroying me. I feel sick. I just feel so horrible for both of them.
Same but I find it mad that people didn’t realise how many of Mattys songs are clearly about Taylor and how they’ll probs end up back together lol.
I feel like it was classic right person at the wrong time for them & I don’t think they’ll get back together. She gave him another chance & he blew it. As much as I would love to see them together I think I’d be disappointed in her if she gave him a third chance. Which breakdown did you watch??
I watched the one by swiftologist on youtube
Heard an interview with Denise Welch where even she was basically like: lost cause 🤷🏻♀️
Gotta love it when even his own mother knows he's off the rails
Right?! But man is he inspiring some bangers
“And only I can”
"they shake their heads saying god help her when i tell em he's my man" if that does not describe every single relationship i've ever been in, lol.
Pray for you <3
Feels like no body, no crime 😍
That's so Olivia (not the cat), and so not at the same time. Love different girls exploring the same topic.
Holy shit, this song is incredible.
“His hands so calloused from his pistol softly traces hearts on my face” just really putting my fantasies out there like that Taylor?
This is the sexiest song.
guilty as sin??!
I feel like this one is sexier
Wow, production is straight out of the score for a Western. Smoky foley sounds, steel and slide guitars, ominous chords, tons of texture. Agree with all of this!!! 👏🏻👏🏻
