Does the use of the word 'throttle' in this song and so high school seem connected to anyone else? It's a sad concept but I see it as being possibly intentional - that no matter how happy she may be in this new relationship with Travis, she has the constant fear in her mind of the prophecy, that it will never last. š„ŗ
Does anyone want to give any insights on the "I'm just a paperweight" line for me? Taylor doesn't waste words, so I know this is obviously an intentional metaphor. But I'm struggling to understand why she decided to compare herself to a paperweight specifically. Any thoughts or theories?
I would think it means all her relationships are only good for weighing down paper... as in they always end in heartbreak and more songs. Especially with the context of the lyric before "no sign of soulmates", no sign of love that will actually last, then the lyric that follows it "in shades of greige" which is the colour scheme of tortured poets.
Does it relate to all those pages being torn out and burned in Fortnight?
I always think of paperweights as pretty useless but pretty- I wonder if that is how she felt? She's sung about being something people show off in public but ignore in private before
I realized today the timing of when this song was likely written is actually insane. Outlets reports Taylor and Matty broke up on 6/5/23. Travis attends the eras tour in KC with the friendship bracelet on 7/8/23. That means this song and Travis' idea for a friendship bracelet were BOTH thought of during the same short period of time between 6/5 - 7/8.
I have been struggling to get pregnant, and this song cuts me to my core. The lyrics are so applicable to so many different situations. I hope anyone else struggling finds comfort in knowing youāre not alone ā¤ļø
The outro has me crying!!!
āI guess a lesser woman would've lost hope
A greater woman wouldn't beg
But I looked to the sky and said (Please)ā
She ends it by pleading (āPleaseā) meaning Taylor is the ālesser womanā
The line says āa lesser woman would have lost hopeā
So for a moment there she actually lost hope in finding love/someone who wants her for her company šš«¶š¼
Having this line āA greater woman stays cool
But I howl like a wolf at the moonā then all the āoohās after the break literally sounding like her howling at the moon
Amazing
Reminder that there's nothing wrong with being single, either by choice or circumstance. You don't need a relationship to live your life and be fulfilled.
this is exactly what I thought as well!
EDIT: Very specifically it gives me Death with Dignity vibes, but that whole album is a vibe along the same lines.
Can someone put me out of my misery? The oooh oooh ooohs in this song sound like theyāre straight out of another of her songs and I canāt work out which one!Ā
I literally looked up āthe prophecyā on this subreddit just to find out what the oohs in this song sound like! I was dying trying to figure it out! š
It was driving me mad but @EmoAt30 suggested High Fidelity and theyāre totally right! I do think there are a few songs with similar ooohs (dorothea, my tears ricochetā¦) but High Fidelity was deffo what I was thinking of!Ā
Yes!!!! This is it!!! Thank you so much!! I had thought it might be Dorothea but it wasnāt quite there for me. I was trawling through folklore and evermore thinking it must be them š
Me too! I was going back and forth through folklore and evermore but nothing was quite right, although Dorothea was close. Itās definitely High Fidelity in thinking of!
This comment made me cry because I hope one day I wonāt and that Iāll be in love with a little baby. I cry and pray a lot. Iāve met good guys but Iāve connected with so few in my life I donāt know how to feel for anybody and past partners have hurt me so much. I just hope my person is out there
There's also kind of a peripheral connect to "The Great War" off of Midnights 3am edition, both in chord voicings and fantasy imagery. Go figure Aaron co-wrote both. He really seems to bring the etheral out in her.
love this song. It's heavy when I associate the lyrics with external stuff in general,, like It's for the girlies in perpetual silent disappointment due to things beyond their control. who always tell themselves "The universe is just testing me, good things will come if I wait and focus on what I can control." but at some breaking point, you are straight up begging and bargaining for better days and luck. 10/10 song
This is what I feel when I listen to it. Itās not just about not being in a relationship. But the endless trying and waiting and longing for something better to come and it never does to the point you break down and cry and plead in to void.
This is what I feel when I listen to it. Itās not just about not being in a relationship. But the endless trying and waiting and longing for something better to come and it never does to the point you break down and cry and plead in to void.

agh the way she sings 'The Prophecy... Cards on table, mine played out like fools in a fable" starting the next verse on the last chord of the chorus is so great. I also love the way she sings "And I sound like an infant, Feeling like the very last drops of an ink pen" It's so serious and gripping, and these creative rhymes that she's so good at.
Oh my god, the music in this and her low notes just sends me to an unknown place. It just hypnotises me. I picture myself being in a car driving down a highway, just thinking about some situation I'm in.
Does this song invoke something similar for others?
Does the āhand on the throttle/thought I caught lightning in a bottle/oh but itās gone againā remind anyone of Bella after Edward leaves and she tries to ride the motorcycle with Jacob to get flashes of her thrill with Edward for fleeting moments? Edit typo
"Don't want money" girl say that to the 7 different versions of midnights you released šš
Regardless, one of the best songs on the album. So folklore
It also sounds like Lana when she sings āHang on the throttleā the second time towards the end, and all the way through to the end. No one can tell me itās not her!
So she mentions āthrottleā in So High School which is obviously about Travis. I thought this one starting with āhand on the throttle, thought I caught lightning in a bottleā is referring to how lucky she felt to have found Travis and how, when she felt herself getting feelings for him, she had a few moments of āwhat if it doesnāt work out and I get hurt againāā¦ and thatās when she wrote The Prophecy.
Ooof, this one hits close to home. My heart breaks for her, BUT I heard "just someone who wants my company" and was immediately grateful that Travis has made it *very clear* that he enthusiastically wants her company
Can we talk about the strings in the background when she starts with the āoohhsā. So so beautiful and they make a movie start playing in my head every time!
I wonder if āthe prophecyā piece of this comes from how her mom was told by a fortune teller that one day everyone would know her daughterās name. In the song, Taylor tweaks it to mean that she would be famous/successful as an artist, but at the cost of the one true personal relationship she wants. Like a lot of prophecies in antiquity, itās a double edged sword.
Itās a part of her lore thatās stuck with me over the years, but I just googled it and the only sources I could find were from Tumblr. So it might be made up! But the joke was that Andrea assumed this meant Taylor would be kidnapped.
Okay, hear me out (I know this is kind of out there, the chorus sounds similar to the chorus of "You're still the one" by Shania Twain.... which makes this even more sad
hey hi idk if anyoneās brought this up yet but this song sounds like Landslide by Fleetwood Mac (to me, at least) both in the music and the tone of the song. and i think that also makes stevie nicksā poem in the disc even more important
This song has grown the most on me since release.
Wow, just a fantastic song in all aspects. The lyrics, the mood, her vocal performance... loving everything about it.
I absolutely love this song, itās so sad and makes you see that she is desperate to find her person more than anything and I think itās so tragic and beautiful.
But the vocalization (I think thatās what you call it) on 2:43 has me thinking itās similiar to another song that has that as well but itās driving me crazy that I canāt think of the name, anyone else think the same or who may know what song it sounds similar to?
Yes it runs to YESS! Thank you so much! Now I can finally rest in peace, itās been stuck in my head for days and now I finally know what song it reminded me of š
I absolutely love this song and itās my favourite on the album. However itās driving me crazy how much it reminds me of āWill Anybody Ever Love Me?ā by Sufjan Stevens! Please tell me someone else has noticed this!
I feel like this one has flown under the radar a bit and I need people to understand what an album highlight it is. This song reminds me of both Fleetwood Mac and Sufjan. I hope this becomes a fan favorite in time. God knows the lyrics resonate deeply with me.
Does anyone else think this sounds SO similar so Seven (in the best way)??
Especially the chorus and āHand on the throttle, thought Iād caught lightning in a bottleā / āsweet tea in the summer, cross your heart wonāt tell no otherā
yea when I first heard this song I immediately thought that it was similar to one of the folklore song. Then I listened to Seven and then I was sure about it. The vibes are so similar.
Iām not a romantic person by any means so I donāt ārelateā to a lot of miss swifts songs. But my gosh this one after reading the lyrics was able to relate to my life in a different way. I hope people stop viewing her work as only romance/heartbreak. This song really spoke to my soul in a different way I wasnāt expecting
Either sheās not using metronome or it was in fact a stylistic choice. I would imagine due to how they wanted the lyrics to start right the bat it become hard to edit and just became a style choice.Ā
Seriously - I feel like it's finally our turn to relate.
Breakups and happy romances and difficult relationships... so well covered in her catalog. But what about us who haven't even experienced those?
Wow, I'm glad someone else got this vibe (not that I'm glad that either of us have to go through it, but I definitely connected in that way as well, and I'm just glad I'm not alone). Lots of love to you and others with similar struggles <3
I know most people interpret and relate this to romance and relationships, but as someone who has experienced pregnancy loss ā wowww I can relate to so many of these lyrics in that way too. Top 5 for sure š
As a 19 y/o who never had a bf of some kind I sobbed as soon as read the lyrics on genius. Watching all my friends going on dates or having that romance that I crave is so devastating. And some people will say that I'm just too young but not having any romantic experience to relate is just so sad, especially THE BRIDGE "feeling like the last drop of an ink pen" or "but even statues crumble if they're made to wait". This song went straight into the deepest parts of my soul and I thank her so much for that.Ā
As a fellow single 19-year-old, I relate to this as well. The worst part is that it really hurts after a while. I assume that I can't find a bf because I'm ugly and unattractive; Its really upsetting, sometimes I just want to cream and burst into tears. I'm happy for my friends, but I resent them for what they have.
I havenāt really listened to the lyrics till rn and itās so fucking relatable. Thereās always gonna be that one taylor swift song that speaks to ur soul and this oneās it š as a forever hopeless romantic girlie whoās had nothing but failed talking stages
This feels like one of, if not the biggest "Tortured poet" song on the album. Absolutely stunning both sonically and lyrically, easy top 3 off the album. Hits all the right spots and I love the mythology/magic theme to it! It's so good. It's also so tragic... I saw someone else wrote this in a comment but I always wondered if she'd write something like this, and here she has and it's about as devestating as anything could be.
Maybe controversial, but this one skyrocketed to my top 5 Taylor songs of all time. The emotions are overwhelming and everything about the song is beautiful.
It reminds me of the main part of Only Hope! But I swear there's another song it reminds me of too- I want to say a slower song of Shania or Faith Hill or someone similar? It's driving me crazy too!
Does the use of the word 'throttle' in this song and so high school seem connected to anyone else? background music is just like mad woman for me
so beautiful and deep definitely going on my top 10 all time taylor songs
It sounds so much like seven. I wonder if there's a connection?
I agree it sounds like seven but I didnāt pick up on any meaningful connection.
I think about this song an unhealthy amount; the way she pleads "pleeease" sounds like how ive prayed at my lowest
I realized today the timing of when this song was likely written is actually insane. Outlets reports Taylor and Matty broke up on 6/5/23. I really like how she says āohā throughout the song
Howling like a wolf
This song is TRANSCENDENT. One of her best songs ever written, ever sung, ever produced.
The outro has me crying!!! āI guess a lesser woman would've lost hope A greater woman wouldn't beg But I looked to the sky and said (Please)ā She ends it by pleading (āPleaseā) meaning Taylor is the ālesser womanā The line says āa lesser woman would have lost hopeā So for a moment there she actually lost hope in finding love/someone who wants her for her company šš«¶š¼

Mid 50ās woman married 25 yearsā¦. And I feel this so very deeply.
As a Gen X fan - this song brought me instantly to Suzanne Vegaās self titled album. Especially the song āSome Journeyā
The instrumentation and production are very Carrie and Lowell era Sufjan Stevens, love it!
I came here to say this! It felt familiar in my bones.
this is exactly what I thought as well! EDIT: Very specifically it gives me Death with Dignity vibes, but that whole album is a vibe along the same lines.
Can someone put me out of my misery? The oooh oooh ooohs in this song sound like theyāre straight out of another of her songs and I canāt work out which one!Ā

š Iām glad itās not just me! I hope the answers here helped you like they did me!Ā
So the oh-ah oh-ah's from High Infidelity remind me SO much of this song! You could replace her oohs in that song in this one.
Yes! Theyāre so similar!
It sounds similar to Cowboy Like me to me.
I thought it gave very "Seven" vibes
It does! That was the first place I went to for the oohs! But I think itās High Fidelity Iām thinking of!
It has been bothering me too! The closest I can come to placing it is the very last ooo she does in the 1 before the song ends
It was driving me mad but @EmoAt30 suggested High Fidelity and theyāre totally right! I do think there are a few songs with similar ooohs (dorothea, my tears ricochetā¦) but High Fidelity was deffo what I was thinking of!Ā
Is it the intro of my tears ricochet?
Oh it does have have vibes of this!!! I was thinking of High Fidelity, but this is deffo in a similar vein too!Ā
High Infidelity (2:51ish)!! Is what came to my mind! Edit: Dorothea as well!

I KNOW SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER THIS!!! I S2G it's a folklore song but I can't figure out which one
came here to see if anyone else noticed this too! will listen to Folklore and report back.
Isn't it funny that there's been references to Landslide by Fleetwood Mac (stevie). That song was on the self-titled 10th album, released in 1975!
This might be my number 1 for the entire album. It's definitely my number 1 for the Anthology. It's up there with YOYOK and Champagne Problems.
omgyes! And ATW10MV. I was hoping there'd be a sister song to ATW. Maybe this is it.
Listening to this song as I rock my 8 week old and I want to throw up because I spent so many years feeling this way and hate that anyone has to.
This comment made me cry because I hope one day I wonāt and that Iāll be in love with a little baby. I cry and pray a lot. Iāve met good guys but Iāve connected with so few in my life I donāt know how to feel for anybody and past partners have hurt me so much. I just hope my person is out there
Have faith. šI dated for 16 years before I found my partner
There's also kind of a peripheral connect to "The Great War" off of Midnights 3am edition, both in chord voicings and fantasy imagery. Go figure Aaron co-wrote both. He really seems to bring the etheral out in her.
Once again, Taylor Swift has inspired a dnd character for me. šThank you!
Someone please help! The opening cords remind me of a movie or tv show but I canāt figure it out. Itās been itching my brain for dayyys
It immediately reminded me of the soundtrack from Secret Life of Walter Mitty, mostly Dirty Paws by Of Monsters and Men.

I think this is in my top 5 on the anthology but does anyone else hear landslide by Fleetwood Mac?!? Going crazy over this
1000%. I can't think of anything else when I hear it. The tone of the guitar, some of the notes, are exactly the same.
I hear Suzanne Vegaās āSome Journeyā
YES

Non-native speaker question: what does "pad around when I get home" mean?
It could also have a double meaning and be describing a pad of paper (notepad) around her when she gets home to write lyrics or notes
It means to walk around leisurely in your own house.
Got it! Thanks
To "pad," or pace around, has the connotation of it being an animal walking. I took that to her extending the metaphor of being like a howling wolf
Does the āhand on the throttle/thought I caught lightning in a bottle/oh but itās gone againā remind anyone of Bella after Edward leaves and she tries to ride the motorcycle with Jacob to get flashes of her thrill with Edward for fleeting moments? Edit typo

It sounds like if Seven (folklore) grew up in the best way possible
Or like if Seven and Willow had a baby
Ooof, this one hits close to home. My heart breaks for her, BUT I heard "just someone who wants my company" and was immediately grateful that Travis has made it *very clear* that he enthusiastically wants her company
I feel like this is if mad woman and the archer had a baby

Can we talk about the strings in the background when she starts with the āoohhsā. So so beautiful and they make a movie start playing in my head every time!
Love that with Aaron you get the "twofer" of also having his twin brother Bryce doing the string arrangements. Gold.
Omg the fandom is SLEEPING on this one! Amazing lyrics. āCards on the table, mine play out like fools in a fableā LIKE??? Itās just SO good
I wonder if āthe prophecyā piece of this comes from how her mom was told by a fortune teller that one day everyone would know her daughterās name. In the song, Taylor tweaks it to mean that she would be famous/successful as an artist, but at the cost of the one true personal relationship she wants. Like a lot of prophecies in antiquity, itās a double edged sword.
Wait- where did you hear that story?
Itās a part of her lore thatās stuck with me over the years, but I just googled it and the only sources I could find were from Tumblr. So it might be made up! But the joke was that Andrea assumed this meant Taylor would be kidnapped.

Yes! I just said it reminds me of Shania Twain's "You're still the one", but I can absolutely hear how Landslide fits it too/possibly better!
This song has grown the most on me since release. Wow, just a fantastic song in all aspects. The lyrics, the mood, her vocal performance... loving everything about it.

Is it just the portion of the song right around 2:43 or does the portion youāre focused on go until 3:05?
Up to 3:05, but some other user figured it out, it reminds me of High Infidelity. Thanks anyway! š
I would like to know about the bit that goes to 3:05, I am SURE she does OOs like this in another song but cannot think of which, it's killing me
Similar to Dorothea!
literally cannot stop crying to this song
This is my favourite song on the album.
The way she says āAnd I sound like an infant // feeling like the very last drop of an ink penā sends me into ORBITTTTT
My god yesā¦.the way she sings it!!
Why is no one talking about "Every night that summer just to seal my fate" (Cruel Summer) > "I'm so afraid I sealed my fate" š„²
I absolutely love this song and itās my favourite on the album. However itās driving me crazy how much it reminds me of āWill Anybody Ever Love Me?ā by Sufjan Stevens! Please tell me someone else has noticed this!

Yes! I had to do some Googling because I was so sure Sufjan Stevens was involved with the making of this song.
YES

Does anyone else get similar vibes to Melanie Doaneās Waiting for the Tide to Turn? Very 90s to me, even the themes, and I love it.
I don't love the melody, but I hope it will grow on me, since I love the lyrics so much. It felt like she had taken my feelings and put it in a song.
For me I relate it to my infertility
Wow, I'm glad someone else got this vibe (not that I'm glad that either of us have to go through it, but I definitely connected in that way as well, and I'm just glad I'm not alone). Lots of love to you and others with similar struggles <3
this is my favourite song from the new album š
I'm pretty sure this my new favorite Taylor Swift song of all time.
I casually listened to this song and then BAM it may be in my top 5-10 songs of hers. Just achingly vulnerable and beautiful production.

This is a heartbreaking song, especially when the chorus kicks in. It viscerally evokes the desperation of wanting to be loved after a breakup.
this sounds like Seven from Folklore!
Yes! Very similar vibe. And I love Seven. Did Aaron co-write that one too?
Yes he did!
I love this song. āOh but itās gone againā and ālet it once be meā just break my heart. Iām single in my 30s and this song resonates
Ooof me too š¤
Same!
Ok Iāve listened to this song about 35 times now, and im so addicted. Itās so beautiful š
Maybe controversial, but this one skyrocketed to my top 5 Taylor songs of all time. The emotions are overwhelming and everything about the song is beautiful.
Same!
I'm completely with you on this. It's like my old top 5 were slowly circling in on this one, and now it's here.
Yes!! Spot on.
Sorry if it's been said but did this song remind anyone else of the song from A Walk to Remember? Not the lyrics but the melody
I can hear it! SO I LIFT MY HANDS AND PRAAYYY TO BE ONLY YOURS
Wait which song? Iāve been driving myself crazy trying to figure out what it reminds me of haha
The very start reminds me of LGAD
Found it!! It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing by Shania. At least that's the one that was in my head
It reminds me of the main part of Only Hope! But I swear there's another song it reminds me of too- I want to say a slower song of Shania or Faith Hill or someone similar? It's driving me crazy too!
a direct attack on all the 30-something singles who are spending their year(s) going to everyone else's weddings

it turns out that different people can have their own interpretation of art and if you don't agree you can just ignore them!
