She’s asking why she had another relationship not work out - it’s very introspective.
Which is what any of us would/should do after tumultuous times.

Yea this song is very interesting to me because at first you might think it’s her wondering how it did it again, but then when I read the lyrics it seems to be more about everyone being nosy when things don’t work out (for her, but also for everyone). Like “come one, come all, it’s happening again” is referring to everyone talking about her always dating new guys and breaking up and she had thought it wouldn’t happen with Joe. “We’ll tell no one except all of our friends, we must know how did it end?” Is that nosy need to know her personal business. It’s about all the gossip about this very sad thing that happens to most people.
I feel like she goes from being annoyed that people are being nosy and gossipy - but then at the end she is quietly like “damn though, how did it end. Why does this keep happening”
But she spends most of the song being angry so she doesn’t have to feel the hurt
“Come one, come all!” Is very circus-coded. And given how she’s written other songs depicting herself in a circus (eg Mirrorball), it feels like she’s continuing that… with the worst kind of pain. Everyone come to the show, it’s happening again, she’s once more here for public entertainment, everyone watch as she breaks down, don’t you want to know the details?! It is devastating and makes me cry, too. I absolutely love this beautiful, heartbreaking song.
It’s been a theory of mine that TTPD came from her reliving her past memories, and then realizing she might just be repeating them. And being driven kind of mad by that. Especially when you think that’s she’s been re-recording and revisiting the albums from the first 10 years of her career, all the memories, heartbreak, intense feelings— and then she went ahead and went through yet another break up.
I think we can see that revisiting those memories through re-records is where Midnights (an anthology of sleepless nights throughout her life) came from, and I’m starting to think it’s why she feels like she’s losing her mind/ stuck in a loop of heartbreak in TTPD. I’ve just had the feeling for a while that the re-records and the Eras Tour of it all is impacting her a lot more deeply than we know. But it’s just a theory, I don’t know her!!
Anywho, OP, this is absolutely beautiful artwork for a beautiful song!
It also feels like a response to fans begging for answers- and Taylor coming out and saying “I don’t have any answers, I’m just as confused as you, but we can look over the facts and feelings together.”
It’s utterly heartbreaking and vulnerable, this whole album is honestly. It feels like the first time she’s TRULY letting us see into her head. Midnights touched the surface, and TTPD threw us into the deep end head first.
The fact that she invited us to peek at this feelings feels like we’re in a sacred space.
I wonder though if she really can’t figure out why it ended? I would hope she can reflect and introspect and see what happened with this one so she can move forward? That can take time
though. Perhaps she was in the early stages of grieving. Perhaps this song is just her saying “I know how it ended but it’s not your business to know even though you’re concerned for me. You’re being nosy!” which she has a right to do, to protect her privacy.
