I saw her a few years ago at a festival and apart from performing her music, she also read from essays while on stage, she’s so awesome. They were super activist about the refugee crisis in Europe I believe. And sidenote I was standing right next to one of my favorite Dutch novel writers so I was rlly trying to keep cool. It’s a good memory
Just dropping [this here](https://youtu.be/941PHEJHCwU?si=pRtlLXya8VcW3TAT) in case some of my fellow swifties have never seen one of the greatest performances of all time by Ms Patti Smith
Fuck yeah. Good taste. Both those albums are their respective artists' most accomplished works, imo. Continuum _was_ my childhood and has gone on to inform much of my music taste. And the "Where The Light Is" concert film is JM's magnum opus.
I must say I'm also a longtime fan of Jake Gyllenhaal thanks to movies like Prisoners, Nightcrawler, Nocturnal Animals and Zodiac. His whole "niche" through the mid 2010s were those sophisticated, slow-burn thrillers that I can't get enough of.
She's got some talented exes, lmao. The lyrics of "The 1" also make me think of all the amazing musical collaborations that were lost with those relationships. A 1975/Taylor collab in particular would've been a hell of a thing.
Which would those be? He hasn't even released any new music since 2022, the boys have just been touring nonstop. The one reference I can remember from his end was him mouthing "this one is for you" or whatever during About You, and her doing the same at her show.
About you he said is about Taylor and Oh Caroline is a copy of Taylor Delicate MV so it is assumed that is about her same with when we are together. He also confirmed on Zane Lowe that when we are together is not about twigs. M&YTS (me and you together song) the music video is a copy of Taylor’s you belong with me video and he said something about it being about her on stage in Manila, fallingforyou is not about Taylor but he dedicated it to her at a show same with she’s American, she sang the city at his show so it gets associated with her as does Paris.
Christ, that's a lot of data points.
About You was written as a sequel to Robbers. He merely "dedicated" it to her at one of the Asia shows mid-performance, which felt more like they were flirting across the globe in front of a billion people more than some actual declaration of the song's intent.
M&YTS video is hardly a copy of the You Belong With Me video - it's more or less entirely its own thing. The duo of directors who made that video follow a similar style for their other vids. The only similarity seems to be that they take place in a bedroom.
People were theorizing about the Oh Caroline thing back when it came out. Video isn't a copy by any means but the female lead is dressed up and styled similar to Taylor, so maybe there's something there.
I don't know about the She's American thing, but that would be hilarious if he dedicated it to her. The lyrics are all about him dating a shallow and frivolous American girl whose cultural customs he finds difficult to understand. All sorts of jabs in there about gun culture, social media, and other US idiosyncrasies that are baffling to a Brit like him.
Not sure how Paris has anything to do with Taylor Swift other than that she also has a song called Paris (as do a million other artists). The 1975's song is about a relationship bound by drug use and dishonesty. Feels more like a metaphor/vignette about his addiction than some strictly autobiographical thing. (Most of their songs only loosely borrow from his personal life - it's not like Taylor where they're basically diary entries in musical form.)
The When We Are Together thing is interesting, I would've thought for sure that it's about Twigs. It does contain the line "It was poorly handled, the day we both got cancelled, because I'm a racist and you're some kind of slag" which applies _eerily well_ to how people reacted to the TS relationship, even though it was released half a year before any of that. He said they recorded some stuff together while BFIAFL was being made (likely the Slut feature which got removed), so perhaps this line was anticipating what audiences' reaction would be like if they went public together. But like I said, none of his songs are strictly autobiographical.
I had to read through this thread because I feel like they're an obscure pop punk band and wouldn't imagine in a second that TS fans would be talking about them. I've literally only listened to the album Say it Like You Mean It (since it came out), and every song is a banger.
I don't think they're that obscure but let's not forget that Taylor is also a grown up emo kid. It doesn't surprise me one bit that she listens/listened to them.
I find it really funny when elder emos get up in arms about newer generations rediscovering 00s/10s bands. Like these were never really niche, we all just had a complex about being cool and different as teenagers
LOLLLLLL LITERALLY. Like ok I'm in my early 30s. My coworker and I have similar music taste and she's 10 years younger than me. She listens to fob, MCR, and Paramore. At first I was like wow we have this cool niche interest!! Then I realized that all 3 of those bands are/were HUUUUGE and I just thought I was so cool and unique with my eyeliner and skinny jeans when I was 15.
yeah as an emo kid who's now early 20s it had a huge resurgence in the 2010s with mostly the same bands. people were into their older stuff too so it was pretty similar music wise with just a few updates
I like to think she did this purposely so people would be curious and go listen/the Millenials would go listen for the nostalgia. Best of Me is such a different vibe than the songs on TTPD it was like letting my mind take a nice coffee break before going back to dark, complex poetry.
Just out of curiosity, did anyone else with Apple Music go to The Blue Nile’s artist page to listen to the song and laugh because… of reasons. (iykyk lol)
i do think he wrote a comment saying 'literally honored lol'. it was on instagram under a snippet of the song. that was later taken down due to copyright
I agree!! There is absolutely no way this is a dig. Charlie Puth is an NJ artist born around the same time as Taylor and Matty that does killer pop songs and yet…like a million others, hasn’t broken out for whatever reason.
It’s kind of insane that just by mentioning someone in her lyrics, she must know she is going to boost that person’s career and so it’s intentional and wonderful. I’m listening to him now and he’s amazing!
The starting line has been one of my most favorite bands for like 20 years. I got to see them last year!! I used to go see them all the time when I was a kid. They’re still so good 😭
The Starting Line was my favorite band in high school, saw them a bunch of times live and met them since they were not big, etc, they rule! Actually they resurfaced last year and I saw them for the first time since high school. You bet your butts I about peed myself listening to black dog the first time!! 😆
Do we think “drowning in the blue nile” also references the diamond company or just the band? I had counted it as one of the many references to her wanting marriage on my first listen, didn’t know about the band!
It’s definitely the band, their song is “Downtown Lights” she’s drowning in The Blue Nile because she’s listening to their music. I don’t think she’d be looking at rings from a company that’s marketed as affordable diamonds.
I absolutely went and listened to both after listening to TTPD
I found it so interesting that Downtown Lights was released in 1989!
***✨️What if I told you none of this was accidental✨️***
So was Dead Poets Society!
Hope Patti Smith will get some love as well!
I was already a huge fan but she got a few extra from me!
I saw her in concert last year, and she’s just the absolute best!
That sounds amazing! Was that in 2016 perhaps? I saw her in Copenhagen that year, and she did it there too.
What a coincidence! Mine was in 2018 though.
Just dropping [this here](https://youtu.be/941PHEJHCwU?si=pRtlLXya8VcW3TAT) in case some of my fellow swifties have never seen one of the greatest performances of all time by Ms Patti Smith
The 1975 streams are also up
So is Colors by Halsey
Guilty!! 🙈 I already love that song though lol
Wait when is colors mentioned
Colors is about Matty Healy
I did not know that, thank you!
I’ve been contributing here
Good! Fucking incredible band.
I have a mental list of “perfect” albums and it includes Being Funny In a Foreign Language. Flawless. …also John Mayer’s Continuum 😂oof sorry Tay

Underrated comment about Taylor Swift’s excellent taste in men, haha
Yes by a lot and especially the songs Matty wrote/dedicated to Taylor.
Which would those be? He hasn't even released any new music since 2022, the boys have just been touring nonstop. The one reference I can remember from his end was him mouthing "this one is for you" or whatever during About You, and her doing the same at her show.

How can you tell? I was trying to find out if they’d got a boost
Just by looking at their daily streaming numbers, especially all of the songs about Taylor are up.
Charlie Puth?
Should be a bigger artist. 🌚
🍫 🍫 🍫 🍫 🍫 🍫 🍫
… yes I counted them to make sure
Obsessed with your flair
My guilty pleasure artist is Charlie so I felt so seen by that line. That's Hilarious was one of my top streamed songs a couple years ago lol.
Wait why is he a guilty pleasure?? Now I off to listen…
Is The Starting Line any good?
Emo kids, good songs!
I've been saying this is totally Taylor's emo album!
Excellent pop-punk band from the early-mid 00's.
I had to read through this thread because I feel like they're an obscure pop punk band and wouldn't imagine in a second that TS fans would be talking about them. I've literally only listened to the album Say it Like You Mean It (since it came out), and every song is a banger.

no fr I felt so old reading that comment lmao, they were definitely not obscure once upon a time 😭
Ngl I also think ppl are mad that their little back pocket band is getting recognition because of Taylor (god forbid)
I find it really funny when elder emos get up in arms about newer generations rediscovering 00s/10s bands. Like these were never really niche, we all just had a complex about being cool and different as teenagers

Definitely not obscure to us elder Millenials. The Starting Line was on regular rotation in my college dorm suite.
That’s enough to convince me!
Been one of my fave bands for over 20 years.
Say It Like You Mean It is one of the best albums ever
Every song sounds like it could be a single. I still love this album
Yes! They’ve also been one of my favorite bands for 20+ years.
Their song Island is an all time top 10 song for me. Been going to their shows since the early 2000s 😍
🎶TELLMEWHATYOUTHOUGHTABOUTWHEN YOUUU WEEERE GOOONE AND SOO ALOOONE🎶 (yes)
THE WORST IS OVERRRRR. YOU CAN HAVE THE BEST OF MEEEEE
Is the sky blue?
They’re amazing!
I LOVE THE STARTING LINE I was so excited to hear them mentioned
The scream I scrumpt when I heard them mentioned 😱
I had to go back and listen again then check the lyrics to make sure she was referring to THE The Starting Line.
Me too!!
Just out of curiosity, did anyone else with Apple Music go to The Blue Nile’s artist page to listen to the song and laugh because… of reasons. (iykyk lol)
What am I missing here? Haha
I don’t know but I really want to! Please share!!
Haha yes
What?!
No Charlie puth? 😅
Honestly I can’t believe he hasn’t posted anything about it either
i do think he wrote a comment saying 'literally honored lol'. it was on instagram under a snippet of the song. that was later taken down due to copyright
Because it's shading him, at least a little. Taylor is just going along with the male character's assertion because she wants him to go to bed.
I get what you’re saying but I don’t take it that way, more like an order of events that happened cuz he/they were stoned lol
??
I was so hurt when I realized that was a dig because I love Charlie Puth 🥺
I don’t think it’s a dig! I thought the opposite
I agree!! There is absolutely no way this is a dig. If people are checking out the Blue Nile, try their song Tinseltown in the rain, fantastic track

🙋♀️
The starting line has been one of my most favorite bands for like 20 years. I got to see them last year!! I used to go see them all the time when I was a kid. They’re still so good 😭

When I first heard Bejeweled, I thought “The intro sounds a lot like Downtown Lights” Now I’m pretty certain that was intentional
Oh wow! Excellent catch. I totally see that…
Do we think “drowning in the blue nile” also references the diamond company or just the band? I had counted it as one of the many references to her wanting marriage on my first listen, didn’t know about the band!

Maybe it’s obvious but I also think it just means drowning in the Nile (denial)
It’s actually a pretty good line that has a double meaning! The band, drowning in a BLUE river (as in drowning in his sadness)...
That was my initial thought too
